Custom Rom on 4.4.2 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hello all,
New to the note 2 scene but have been a long time s3 owner and I'm very familiar with flashing rooting and custom roms and recoveries. I've been reading a bit and it seems like I'm stuck on nd7. Is there no safestrap method for those who received the device with nd7 already? I like some of the features like ultra battery saver and air command but am stuck with just stock TW?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using XDA Free mobile app

anyone guide me in the right direction?

Currently nd7 can only be rooted. I believe I have heard someone is trying to work on safestrap for nd7.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=55512585
Here's the post/thread where Beastmode talks about seeing if he can get a safestrap working for 4.4.2.
About a week ago, Beastmode said he was about 30% there with it... so it sounds like progress is happening.

thanks guys i really like the phone but i'm so used to being able to flash roms that i feel lost:silly: any way thanks guys i really hope beastmode gets it going, i'm gonna head over there and give him a little paper motivation

I know the pain. One of my criteria for buying this GN2 was that it have the old firmware, so I found a guy that had BNIB old stock Notes for $300. Still sporting MC3! Any chance you could go shopping for one that is still on old firmware and trade the other off on Swappa?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using XDA Free mobile app

Yes I have been debating but im gonna wait some to see if beastmode gets safestrap running on the note. If not I may have to try to find an older firmware gn2 or go to gn3.

Note 2 newb just unlocked

Hi guys, I am very new to the Note 2. I just unlocked and rooted the latest ota using Casual. Thanks to Adam Outler and everyone else involved. So my question is which ROMs are compatible with this ota? Basic question I'm sure. I came from the Razr and the kernel had to match so I assume its the same here? Anyone willing to shed some light on this for me would be greatly appreciated.

Any rom you want as long as it is in the VZW Note 2 threads can be flashed ours arent locked down by what update we are on because our bootloader is unlocked where it isnt on Moto phones. AOSP roms require AOSP kernels as TW roms require TW kernels. The roms come with kernels though so that isnt something tk worry about unless you I want to.
The only thing to remember is if you go to a 4.2 rom and want t I go back to 4.1 you have to flash a downgrade zip so your SD card doesnt become corrupted. You can find the downgrade zip in the Official CM 10.1 thread in the OP.
Check out Droidstyles guide in Android Development, its a sticky, it explains quite a bit and would ne helpful to you I think.

Thanks for the info. Exactly the answers and info I was looking for. I just flashed CleanROM and went through the flashing process. When it got to the end and said finish to reboot it just turned off and wouldnt turn back on. Couldn't get to recovery or download mode. I had to pull the battery and then turn it on. It went straight to the new ROM though without a hitch. Is that a normal part of the flashing procedure on the N2? The battery pull I mean, or did I miss something?

Thats not a normal thing to happen, but it does happen occasionally. As long as it boots up after the battery pull I wouldnt be too worried by it. I have had it happen to me before and after the battery pull I experienced no issues whatsoever.

CleanROM's good. It was the first ROM I flashed when I got my Note II too.
Eventually though, you may want to switch to something more feature-rich like Jelly Beans, which is what I'm rocking now. The features it adds are pretty awesome and you get full touchwiz functionality (S-Pen and the like) with the look of AOSP.
DL'ing Jelly Beans now. Gotta make a new TiBu before flashing though. Will give it a go shortly. My wife fusses at me sometimes cause on my old phone (Razr) and on this one I am always flashing different ROMs. She especially hates it when she calls and my phone goes directly to voicemail cause I am in recovery flashing a ROM or kernel.

Hi all, I'm feeling like a n00b on the Note too, and really appreciate the help all of you seem to be willing to share with each other. I'm not new to modding phones, recently I've been through an S3, DNA, RAZR HD and M, and even another Note 2. I made the mistake of swapping the Note 2 for an iPhone 5, and regretted it about thirty seconds later. Now that's my wife's phone, and due to the grace of another (local) xda member, I'm back rockin' the Note 2. This time around in looking forward to getting into some serious flashing and tweaking to get the most from the hardware. I've decided this is Verizon's best phone at the moment, with everything I need.
Don't worry, you're not alone in having a wife who gets annoyed at flashing and tweaking. Happens to me all the time, but I use the excuse it's one of the few hobbies that I have which doesn't involve the rest of the family and I need a bit of alone time. It kind of works as an excuse until the point where I need to use it again.
I'm looking forward to being part of this community and wanted to say hello.

I like jedi X rom...I got 3 days off my battery with just the right settings...my recommendation is to not mess with the per app dpi for the settings app because now I'm stuck without a settings app and about to switch roms...just about any rom will work as long as it's for your carrier... Best of luck!

MDK, ME7, SGS4 And a lot of disappointment...

Hello everybody! I just got my SGS4 a couple of days ago... I handed my SGS3 down to my wife (running beans 18 what a monster!) and headed for the forum to see how to root and unlock this puppy... When I saw that Beans was rolling out his rom for s4 I knew I did the right thing... If i only knew... While I was tinkering with my phone a new update notification came up and without thinking I just accepted it (being used to accepting updates on my nexus 7 unrooted and never worrying about otas for my phone) as it turns out I had an MDK phone, now no more... and the more I read on the forums the more I wanna kick myself in the face for being so naive... Especially because I used to be a moto owner!
Well after my sad story I got a couple of questions... I rooted my me7 what app do I freeze to avoid otas?
And another trickier question can any knowledgeable user explain (dumbing it down a little) why some phone's boot loader cannot be unlocked ever? Just out of curiosity...
Thanks!

Never really did pay much attention to this me7 but I never took the update, does this mean my bootloader is unlocked???
As for having a locked bootloader its probably just a matter of time before someone finds a way to unlock it.. Let's hope

There's a lot of talk about this ME7 disappointment. So much so, that it has it's own thread for all things related to it.
That being said; freeze SDM.apk, FWupdate.apk, and I think someone mentioned Keychain.apk.

Your bootloader is still locked, but there is an exploit that allows you to install ROM's and Kernels just like if it was unlocked, as long as you are on the mdk build.
Have it Jtagged back to MDK or wait for safestrap. I used safestrap on the bionic, it's an excellent app that will allow ME7 peeps to run custom roms.
Don't worry, you have options.

Jtagging involved taking the phone apart and jumpering two points on your board. This has been used on HTC to achieve s-off on some devices. It's very risky as you have to solder them. I have not heard of anyone doing it on the s4. Or any Sammy device.

There is a guy on here who said he can Jtagg the S4 ME7 back to MDK, but at the moment he is only doing it for devs in order for them to keep working towards unlocking the boot loader.

MDK, ME7 or MI1 which are you on

Not the rom your running but the official version release from Samsung and Verizon.

ME7 stock rooted. Kicking myself for waiting so long and missing out on easily obtaining an MDK. Not willing to pull warranty fraud or anything like that either.
This is what I thought was happening. We have a pretty even mix of people on 3 different versions on this phone. The forum here has been dead lately and I think this is the reason. It's unfortunate Samsung gave in to Verizon..... That or the possibility of gaining a government contract was too much for Samsung to turn down. The situation bums me out. I enjoy reading the forums and the lack of activity is disappointing.... However the news of 4.3 seems to have resparked some interest which is encouraging.

The real question is do you need this update? Unless you're in a low LTE reception area there's really no reason to even consider it. I see a lot of posts about failed rooting with MI1 vs ME7 too, so if you're still wanting to root taking the update could be a bad idea. I'd just wait to see what 4.3 brings

MDK stock rooted. Im only missing blocking mode and torch toggle. now with 4.3 I need the gear support, otherwise no need to leave. (but man I would really love to use my watch) coming from a completely tweaked X and RAZR MAXX this phone was awesome out of the box. so with so many stable roms from the get go, maybe thats why there is so little traffic with this phone
ME7 Rooted and some bloatware frozen. Not using TW however. I bounce between Apex Pro, and Next Launcher. Still deciding if i want to update to MI1 and then 4.3. I'll probably wait till 4.3 has a root process.

You may be stuck on that for a long time or forever. So far everything has been rootable and 4.3 might be but why take that chance? I would wait at least a week to see if any stock 4.3 roms come out for us on MDK. There is not tar available to make a rom from. I've only read of one person keeping root and it was an extensive process.

I love that they got rid of the notification wi fi thing

It's been a while since rooting- what are the current utilities to us?

I'm getting a warranty, Verizon S4 replacement today and I'd like to know the current programs for rooting. The last one I used was Saferoot. It worked well and is that the current most owners use?
Kit Kat question- do you have to return back to stock to get the update? I still have the Odin files just in case.
What is the current discovery? On my S3 I used TWRP and was very satisfied. What is the equal, if there is one, for the S4?
In my S3 I really like the Kit Kang JB 4, is there a compliment to that one. I'm not a huge modifier and was quite happy on my last S4 with the exposed framework set of programs. The one thing I miss is that lock screen circle of icons.
Thanks

Yes if you want to take the ota from Verizon to get kit Kat you'll need to be on stock. You'd have to remove xposed and get your phone all bloated back up for Verizon to allow the update. Most times it can be easier just to use Odin and get it back to stock. That's just my opinion.

You'll probably never be able to install a custom rom.
Best you'll be able to get is modded TouchWiz, e.g. Hyperdrive: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301724
Check your build version in Settings -> About Phone.
If the last 3 characters are M** (e.g. MK2), you can root/flash TouchWiz roms. If it's NC5, you can't do anything, not even root.
Alright. Hopefully it's still on android 4.2.2

The Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 was a new experience for me when it comes to modding the ROM. It turns out that the revision of the phone makes a large difference. It is very important that you read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606501 thread started by decaturbob. Instructions that work for some versions of the S4 will brick others, so read that thread first. Then you will have a better understanding of your limits.
I picked up mine a few months back, so I have one of the most locked down versions. I can say that I've installed Hyperdrive, and I'm very happy with it. I do miss the CM ROM I had with my old phone (Razr), but that's not gonna happen soon, if at all, with this one.
Good luck!

We all root and use modded roms for various reasons. Some want to explore the newer ideas and try the latest cool roms at will. Others, including myself, want a good, stable rom with lots of custom options. After a few weeks of tweaking it, I just go back to using the phone. Both are fine approaches, it depends on what you want. The first option, with easily swapped roms, is not going to happen with the S4. The second, works just fine with the Hyperdrive mod. I agree that the S4 is a great phone, I did root it, I like Hyperdrive, and I use the WiFi tether routinely.
The advice is this: If you want to choose from a variety of roms, especially if you want an AOSP rom, you'll be needing to have an older S4 or another phone altogether. If you're content with the one or two custom rom mods available for the newer S4, such as Hyperdrive, you'll be fine.
