[Q] Make apps think I'm on another device - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello folks!
There's two reasons why I want to "cheat" on my apps:
1. Creating videos from Google+ photos is only possible within the G+ foto app for a few specific devices. Since I'm on Note 2 I missed my luck because since Note 3 it's supported. So I would love to make app think I've actually got a Note 3 to make use of the video feature.
2. Right now the movie "Gravity" is available for free for Nexus 5 owners. So I would love to cheat on the Google Play Movies app to add that movie to my account for free.
Is there a solution?
Of course I'm rooted.

You can edit the build.prop in /system to reflect that you have another device.

I think these are only available to Nokia Phones. Hopefully, they make them available to all WP7 phones, because they're really awesome.
Why does everyone want Nokia Drive?!!!!!!
I think Bing Maps is awesome.. what is it missing?
I use WPCentral & WMPoweruser a lot. Also mehdoh for twitter. Other than that I use a lot of photo apps & Xbox live games, especially Splinter Cell. Also use the people hub for most of my Facebook & some twitter. Though I guess the people hub is baked in & not necessarily an app .

ios -vs- Android --- App Store comparisons

i'm new to Android and i gotta say, i really like the Android App store better than the iPhone's.
anyone else in the same boat as me and liking it?
seems to have alot more apps (and alot more free USEFUL apps). of course, this is probably because Android phones are so customizable & open.
two things i'd like to see is:
1) improvement of the screenshot / sample pictures in the description of each app. the ios sample pictures are high quality. the Android's sample pictures are honestly just terrible.
2) a way to order each app by: highest to lowest price; average user review; free to paid; etc...
otherwise, the Android App Market has been a very nice surprise for this former iP guy
Recently switched from an iphone and I love the android app store
only thing is that a developer is most likely to make an app for the apple market before making it for the android market. like that game temple run
Have you been to the webpage on your desktop computer? You get a little more functionality there. And you can see a little bigger screen shots. If you're signed in, you can push the apps right to your phone from your computer.

The pictures are likely not very good resolution on the Note because they were taken on a phone that isn't as high of resolution as the Note.

I'm the opposite. I like the Apple app store better. For some reason I can always find something interesting to download on my iPhone while browsing the app store, but not on my Note. I also don't like downloading an app and having it tell me it's not compatible with my Note.

that won't happen if you login to your gmail account that you setup with your Gnote. once you're logged in, it will only list app's compatible with the Gnote (unless you specifically Search for an app and it isn't supported by the Gnote.)
someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i think that's right
Market seems cheaper price and more free quality apps.
I love using the website and it pushing to my device

Yes when signed in on the market site it won't let you download apps that aren't compatible with your device. Like Google Chrome Beta, grrrr!!!

Reading magazines on a Nexus 10

I am considering getting a Nexus 10 to replace my iPad 1. I mostly use my iPad for browsing the net and reading magazines on Zinio. Zinio really has the best magazine selection, far better than Amazon or Google Play. However, the Zinio app for the iPad is really awful, and the same problems seem to plague the app on my phone.
I was wondering what the experience is like on a Nexus 10. Do you find that the magazines scale properly? Does anyone have a subscription to National Geographic (this magazine has been optimized for tablets) ... and if so, does it render properly on a Nexus 10?
I really want to avoid giving Apple any more money.
I have a bunch of subscriptions through the play store and they all look gorgeous on the nexus 10.
The magazines in the google magazine app look so amazing on the n10 it is insane looks way better than on ipads
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks guys, unfortunately the magazine selection on Google Play is pretty poor in Australia. No New Scientist, The Economist, National Geographic. I want to know what Zinio is like on the N10. Anybody tried it? Could someone download it and try ... pretty please?
what problems do you have with it on the ipad? I've only browsed it there briefly as its my friends. i'm downloading the app right now, just want to know what you are looking for. My friends current gen ipad is here to so I can compare the two.
Thanks y2whisper. Note that my Ipad is the first generation and not the current iPad 4.
On the iPad, the app crashes frequently, especially in the store, with larger magazines, and multimedia heavy magazines like National Geographic. The resolution of the magazine is very grainy on the iPad, and it is difficult to read text unless you zoom in. There are also all sorts of usability issues - the app fails to auto-download new issues of magazines unless I specifically click on it. It won't download in the background if I swap out of it and do something else (good old Apple's lack of pre-emptive multitasking). This means a good 5-10 minute wait where I can't do anything else on the iPad because the Zinio server is so slow. If I try browsing whilst it is downloading, there is a good probability the app will crash. Also, there is no way to delete single issues of magazines. If you have a folder full of copies of Time you can delete individual issues. But if you have a single issue of Time you can't get rid of it.
Some of these complaints are due to the app and not the device, so I don't necessarily expect that the N10 will be any better. However, I would like to know:
1. Do the magazines automatically render to take advantage of the higher resolution?
2. Does the multimedia content in magazines work?
3. Can magazines download in the background?
4. Does the app crash, or act unstable, etc? Can you check your resource meter to see if it eats up spare CPU cycles when run in the background?
5. Are there any issues on the Android version which are not present on the iOS version?
I realize that you won't be able to answer all my questions, but I would be grateful for any help you can give.
1. The render to where they are clear but don't use all of the real estate that the screen has to offer. it does do landscape view which google magazines doesn't
2. Wasn't able to find one for free that I could test but the interactive magazine functionality does exist including national geography
3 couldn't test this as the preview magazines loaded up to quick to see about background downloading
4 suggest an app and I will use it to monitor it. but no crashes thus far.
5 unsure so far
you do have to zoom at times in articles on this. a problem i don't have with google magazines. too bad their library is crap in your area.
Thank you so much for taking the trouble, y2whisper.
I'm a Zinio magazine reader, I used to use the Adam. Since it died about 9 months ago I've essentially stopped reading magazines... Until now!!!!! I got my N10 about 2 weeks ago and I've been reading all of my mags. Images are amazing, Zinio has been behaving very well no crashes, speedy downloads, my wife thinks I'm having an affair... Yes with my N10 and 9 months worth of subscribed magazines. I've rediscovered my bathroom and throne.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 2
While my N10 didn't arrive yet, I have bought a few magazine issues on my SGS3. On the small screen everything looks very clear, though I still have to zoom in for the letters to be large enough to read comfortably.
Also, there is background downloading, though speeds in general (not only in background) are quite slow as you mentioned.

Google Magazine does do landscape, it is dependent on the magazine. For example, open up the Traveler magazine that came free with the n10

Landscape mode for Google Play magazines?
Hi all,
I really hope you can help me out with a question I have about google play magazines. I am wondering if the Nexus 10 takes advantage of landscape mode when viewing magazines. I have an iPad and I love how GQ changes when you switch the orientation. My Nexus 7 does not change, and i was wondering if the Nexus 10 acts more like an iPad in that regard.
Thanks!!!!

Installing apps

Hi everyone
I'm looking forward to buy a new phone and i'm stuck between lovely lumia 920 and iphone 5
Can u guys give me a quick review about negative points of this phone? I mean in your own opinion.
And what are possible ways to install apps ,free or paid, on this phone?
Tnx so much
Sent from my E15i using xda premium
I am going to answer simply becuase I am courteous. The MS store is just like the Android Market or the iPhone app store. There are paid apps and free apps. Although most of the better stuff has to be paid for and the prices run from about 2 bucks and up.
Negative points? Hmm let me think...... It's not an iPhone.. Seriously, why would you want to be a sheeple? Nearly everyone and their mother owns an iPhone. Be original..
Seriously though our views of this phone are all subjective.. For example if you read some of the gripes posted such as the light leak which only shows from and extreme angle that you would never look from, or the creaking sound when you press on or flex the case which you should not be doing, or the shade of difference between the white of the display and the capacitive button back lights. These to me are all trivial things and just sounds like disgruntled buyer having remorse for some reason and now are picking the phone apart.
For me who has owned several models of HTC, Motorola, Nokia, and have had experience helping to program and update some Samsung devices, I have to say the L920 is the best built, fastest and smoothest operating phone I have seen yet.
My only beef with the phone which i have posted a thread about is it's lack of having a Flash Player. You can not view embedded Flash media in websites. To view Youtube you have to install a third party app. Adobe no longer supports mobile devices as of last year. So this phone was built with the anticipation of all sites converting to HTML5 and doing away with Flash. However that may be some time and until sites you like convert, you may not be able to view them on this phone if the have flash content. Is this a deal breaker? For some maybe. For me had I known this before I bought it, it would have been a deal breaker. But I am now stuck with it and will just have to wait till YT and other site convert if they ever do. The plus is that no phone created past last year will have the ability to view flash with out third party apps. So this may prompt sites to convert faster.
actually, to view Youtube video, you don't really need to install third party app (MetroTube for example), YouTube mobile site support HTML5 itself, just like VEVO, VIMEO, ... Just browsing YouTube via IE on your phone and enjoy your favorite apps.
About installing apps, there are some ways (easy to use):
- using WindowsPhone (WP) store app: find your app and choose install.
- using WP store (web version):
+ find your app, choose install -> app will be sent to your phone (wirelessly) and installed automatically.
+ download app, copy to SD card and install from your phone.
- unlock your phone and install any apps you could find on the internet.

Best way to transfer photos from Note 10+ to Tab S6

I just am looking for the best way to transfer photos from my Note 10+ phone to my Tab S6 tablet as I take them each day. Suggestions welcome.
Assuming your two devices are associated with the same user account and email address, just mail them to yourself.
Easiest way would be to back them up to a cloud service (dropbox, OneDrive. Google Photos, etc.). Then they are accessible from both devices.
Samsung Flow can send photos from one device to the other, but I don't think you can automatically send over new photos. You would have to manually do it.
simply sign into google photos on both, and turn on sync.

I strongly agree.
Even consider paying for 2TB of space when shooting lots of 4K video like I do.
Works perfectly fine, syncs to my PC and tablets.

Hi, i work in mobile and i used the built in app samsung smart switch, in your note 10 box you have a dongle/adaptor to connect both phones, looke up a video tutorial on youtube its easy, fast and you can select what to transfer. Good luck
Files by Google is like airdrop for Android. Try it out.

Try syncthing fork in the Google play store. Does file sync over local network. Only caveat is that the files need to be on local storage and not sd card for it to work properly due to file permissions access restrictions since android pie.
All okay ideas for other posters, but best way is you select the pics you want to share! Then hit Wi-Fi direct you can’t mess with it’s so fast and you can send 100s pics in one go!
