Face Unlock
Is there any chance the facelock.apk can be updated to automagically enter a pin once it recognizes your face? Then if it doesn't recognize your face you would have to enter the pin manually.
I can't use face unlock because I have my work exchange on my phone. I understand that its not quite as secure as the pin entry, but I'm willing to take that risk since I can remote wipe my phone if it gets lost\stolen. I tried multiple work-arounds like email and calendar apps that secure via pin at the application level, but couldn't find both. Plus I'd lose my exchange contacts. Figured that a someone might be able to dev it. Thoughts?

I'm on VS985, rooted, and running Beans rom. However, I am getting a "SW waiting for wifi to download" don't want to lose root, and thought running modified would keep upgrade from downloading, but am now totally confused. I have TiBu installed, but can't remember how to freeze update
Any ideas?
-- EDIT: DOH! sorry, my inner noob had taken over, and clouded my thinking. I remembered how to freeze it on TiBu and the message went away.
BUT: Anyone know what the update (220 Mb) is? Doesn't sound like 5.0, sounds a little light to be a major upgrade.

Took OTA now screwed!
My noobness screwed me over today. I'm Bumped with current version of TWRP and took the OTA today. Now my phone wont boot up past TWRP. I tried factory resetting w/o erasing my internal storage and tried to restore one of my backups but still cant boot past TWRP, please help me if anyone know what I can do to save my phone!
Edit: Fixed! Found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/fix-stuck-custom-recovery-trying-ota-t2907508
Note to self: OTAs are the devil

I use Touchdown for Android.
I am use anything I like and the email and calendar stay separate and secure.
It costs $20 though.

I'll have to check it out again. I've had problems with touchdown not syncing in the past. Are you running Touchdown HD or Touchdown for Smartphones?

Touchdown for smartphones,version 8.4.00086. I don't have any issues.

Hey quick question: Every time i flash one of these Roms a few secs of being in the OS I get "invalid battery" error followed by the device shutting down... any idea what the cause of that might be? I've tried switching the battery and get the same error..

I use Enhanced Email, which was cheap, and it allows you to ignore the pin-unlock requirement from the eXchange server. I used facelock for a while to replace the pin requirement, but it was a little disappointing for my purposes.

Phone recovery security

I was just curious to find out if there was a general consensus as to the better app for recovering your phone. I realize that there are quite a few that do the job. I just want to find the one that does the job and does it well, because if my phone does ever get stolen/lost, I only have one shot to get it right. Trial and error doesn't really give me peace of mind when it's something you actually need it to work.
Any opinions?

I think he's referring to tracking software...
I've seen some nice Tasker scripts that will lock up the phone and e-mail you its GPS coordinates if you send a certain text to it. This way you would get more for your money since Tasker does so many other amazing things.
Have you looked into WaveSecure? seems pretty good, https://www.wavesecure.com/wavesecure/android.aspx
I've heard some good things about Prey but in all honesty, it's good to keep things locked down with either encryption/passcode unlock too. I don't know the statistics on recovery of lost phones but being a pessimistic/optimist I'd say hope for the best but expect the worst. Sync your contacts/emails/etc on a regular basis (maybe once a week and you can use tasker for this), keep sensitive personal information off the phone if possible, etc.
Froyo might let you remote wipe (I heard it would be a feature for enterprise lvl stuff) but if the person who found it is tech savvy (pretty much anyone who can flash a rom) they might just pull the SIM & wipe the phone which would moot any security features you might have in place. I could be wrong though, I don't have a lot of experience in anti-theft and should probably look more into protecting my own phone too and seeing what options are available.
I do know that insurance will cover the loss but it doesn't help if you don't have a backup of all your important info somewhere. Oh, and before I forget, in addition to contacts/email you can sync your calendar too. You just need to make sure when you create an entry that you save it as a Google calendar entry and not to the phone. That way it will sync too.

Sim Checker Pro - Because if someone changes the SIM card, you can't send it a text message for other programs.
When the SIM card is changed out, it'll send me a text message (so I have the new number) and an email with the GPS location.
I also move the app from /data/app-private to /system/app as well, so it can't be deleted with a system wipe either [I just tested this.....Sim Checker is still there & it remembers my password]. Odin can obviously destroy it, but we're assuming this is stolen/found by someone who just thinks your phone is cool, not someone who knows the ins/outs of Samsung Vibrant hacking.
Another plus is if they do a wipe they'd probably lose root (forgot to verify this), which might be good as well.
From there, there are TONS of apps that will send back locations with GPS updates, Wheres My Droid is a popular example.
I would move all of these apps into the /system/app section to be on the safe side.
If I were to find a phone and decide not to give it back (hypothetically of course, don't blast me for something I haven't done), I would power it down & wipe it before doing anything...having them in your /system will help with this. I'm sure most people would probably just yank the SIM card.......either way, if you use Sim Checker, you'll be safe, but make sure you have another option like Wheres My Droid as well.
Also, I'm pretty sure if Sim Checker is in /system, it'll be able to turn the GPS on as well.

how can you be desperate? you posted a day ago. i want a root myself, but take a breath and give the guys with the programming skills the time to do their magic!
that being said, i'd appreciate one myself.
I am also dying for root on this phone. It has been 2 weeks for me and nothing. The phone is slowing down a bi due to all the metro crapware installed that I cant get rid off without root.
Programmerrrrrsssssssss, we neeeeeedddd ROOT on the Admire please!!!
I have to admit that i'm looking forward to one too. I'm sick of all the bloatware they load that turns itself on when you have no need of it.
Right now, after using Advanced Task Killer and then checking 1 hour later with no actual use on the phone, there is "voice search", "Visual Voice Mail" and "myMetro" that are all running and unkillable.

So, I've rooted my Admire, but there are still apps I can't get rid of. I installed SSHDroid, and even that won't let me delete files. I can't freeze them either, with Titanium Backup (Wishing I would have saved the cash). Everything says its running as root, but there's obviously some problem. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Hey Everyone,
I live in Sacramento CA and was told we have 3G here, but I've had my Admire since since Friday and still haven't seen a 3G on my phone.. Not even once! Is there something I need to do or download to make this happen? I tried taking out the battery and then calling *228 option 5 to update the prl, but still my phone is at 3019. My friend has had her Admire since Oct and today had our phones right next to eachother. She had 3G and I still have my 1X! The city we were in isn't even suppose to have 3G yet, and yet she had it! What is wrong with my phone??
Also I'm trying to root my phone, but I have no idea which site I should use to download the root.. I already have titanium backup (free version) and as soon as I'm rooted I will download the PRO.
Any help would be very very appreciated!!
Thank you!

How to pretend I'm not rooted...

Have a rooted Thunderbolt. Am trying to install an app approved by my employer to access email, calendar, and contacts from my phone instead of using my employer issued blackberry. I'm all approved but ran into a snag.
It locked the application because my phone is rooted.
None of the pre-requisites mention it not being allowed on a rooted phone, but that's beside the point. Is there a way to make the app think it's not rooted? I'd rather carry my Blackberry around as a seoncd phone, as awful as it is, than unroot my phone and go back to a stock rom.
Didn't see anything when searching...please help!
Thunderbolt running DasBAMF Forever 1.0.7, imoseyons 3.8 lean kernal
What email client are you trying to set up? I have read a few threads about people having issues with corporate email accounts on rooted phones. I do not think I've ever read a solution that worked either. Do some searches for Corporate Email with root on the normal forums we all browse and I'm sure you will see the number of people asking to accomplish this is significant.
It's a client called "Good". It basically encapsulates all company information (email, contacts, calendars) encrypted within the application. Also allows the IT department to wipe the data remotely without wiping your phone. Company I work for is a huge company "300k plus) and has always been BlackBerry only. They're just now rolling this out to android and iphone...but the "Rooted?" criteria is messing me up.
I'll keep searching, but have had little luck so far.
Just unroot if it is a work phone, why take chances.
If I helped you in any way please use the thank you button
The first time you launched it, did it request superuser permissions ? If so, and you said "allow", it knows you're phone is rooted by the exit code it got back from the 'su' app. If that happens, try this:
- in your app drawer, find the program "Superuser" and launch it.
- scroll through list to find "Good", then tap it
- depending on your version of SU you might have different options to choose here
- tap the 'trashcan' icon
- exit Superuser app and try your "Good" app again
If that doesn't work, try this:
- uninstall app
- reinstall app
- launch app
- DENY access to superuser rights when prompted
If it's determining it has root access another way, I can't help...

It's not a work phone...it's my personal phone. The whole idea is you turn in your BlackBerry and then they give you a $25/mo allowance toward your personal cell bill, then you can still access all the stuff you need from work.
FWIW, I searched the forum (all devices) for "Good for Enterprise" and hit the jackpot. Guess it's all about phrasing it right. Here's an example of one of the helpful links:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032268
So, once i have a custom ROM, is there a way to re-root but keep the ROM? Would I lose access to CWM (for nandroid backups)? I assume I'd lose titanium backup and wireless tether...tough choices. I haven't lived without root in so long that I don't know if I can do it...
Hehe, interesting...
Good for Enterprise on rooted phones
Have fun reading !! I haven't checked any of those results yet myself.
---------- Post added at 04:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:13 PM ----------
Based on the first link I checked from ^^ above ^^, it doesn't base it on how you respond to Superuser, it simply looks for the existence of su.apk, superuser.apk, etc. If it finds them, it stops. And no, renaming those files, then running it won't work either as it checks every time it's run !!
One alternative is:
Create a script file that a) renames the relevant superuser files, b) launches "Good", and finally, when "Good" exits, c) renames the superuser files back to their original names.

Recent update to this app, according to "What's New" page in the Market (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.good.android.gfe&hl=en): Security Enhancements: Better detection of rooted devices to protect your information You may be fighting a losing battle on this one. Even if you figure a way around it, rest assured that the developers of the app browse Android forums seeing how people are NOW getting around their detection routines and will defeat those next.
Of course, it's POSSIBLE that turning this detection on is an admin-level setting that you could ask the IT folks to turn off. It sounds like it's phone-level though, unless on launch, it first queries it's back-end server and then does the relevant checks on the phone side.
It checks every time it's launched, and can be checked at any time. Sucks.
To be honest, I don't blame them for blocking rooted phones...as sensitive as the information is that will be in the app, I'd probably do it too. I just don't want to give up my custom ROM, wireless tether and titanium backup
Would deleting su and superuser.apk have any negative effects (other than disallowing rooted apps)? From what i can tell, those are what Good uses to check for root. Removing them would effectively remove root, so I would be in compliance. And in theory, i could just restore from a rooted nandroid backup to get root back, right?

This was the closest yet...fantastic app. It does successfully remove su and temporarily removes root. However, it looks like GFE also checks for existence of hte superuser.apk. I've messaged the dev to see if there's a way to hide that, but considering that's what's used to root and unroot at will, not sure how that'd work. Hopefully the dev is smarter than me and can figure something out! But very close.
is that the only app that will work for checking your email? could you just add a new exchange activesync account and configure it properly?

I wish. This is the only way they allow due to the extra encryption and ability to remotely wipe data.
Two Words: Dual Boot.
Get your regular "At home" rooted rom all nice and prettied up, then when you get in the car for work, boot into a stock rom that isn't rooted for work specifically.

Missing Ringer Toggle Icon After Deblur

Hi. I recently deblurred my phone using Lokifish's deblur script. It worked great and I'm loving it. Only one problem. After an hour or two of use, I notice that the icon for the ringer toggle disappears (only the on icon, the silent icon remains). The toggle works fine, but I'd like to not have a missing icon.
The first time this happened I thought it was my fault, because I removed all the icon png files that were showing up in my library. However, after restoring a nandroid backup, the icon disappeared again over time. I even tried restoring a stock backup (nandroid backup of stock photon after 2.3.5 OTA update) and going through the whole process of running the script again. Same result.
During the first hour or two of use after deblur, I'm generally going back and installing all my apps again, adding widgets, getting settings back the way I like them, and so fourth. So, I think it has something to do with one or more of these tasks.
I'm just wondering if Lokifish can help me in getting the icon back. I'm posting here, because I'm too new to post a reply in the deblur thread since it's in the developer forum. Please let me know. Thanks.
You are never too new to reply or ask on the thread of the developed thing you have problem with. You should only avoid posting new threads on the developer section, unless you developed or found something and want to share it.
About your problem: Sorry, I'm not an expert yet, and I have no idea.

Thanks, I appreciate your reply. Unfortunately, when I try to post a reply to a thread in the developer forum, I get the following error:
p0wder2, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
The reason below that line that I think most applies to myself is the following:
New members (those with fewer than 10 posts) are not permitted to post to development-related forums.
This is why I have made the determination that I am "too new" to post. If this is inaccurate, please let me know, as I would love to be able to post a reply in the Deblur thread regarding the issue I experienced.
Thanks again.
I'm facing the same issue related to toggle icon. Finally I've to factory reset twice to get my icon back... lol

Sorry, my mistake. It's normal that you're unable to reply on the developer forus, just as you said. You can try to do what matrix says, factory reset twice. Then try to restore data using advanced restore within recovery mode.

Thanks, but I actually have a nandroid backup of the "deblurred" stock ROM. When restoring from that backup, the icon is there for a while and then it isn't. I also reverted to the stock 2.3.5 ROM, without the deblur, and when I went through the whole process again, the same thing happened. Icon is there for a while, then it isn't. I need a way of getting it back without any resets or restoring from backups. If not, I can live without it
Thanks again though. I appreciate the suggestions, they are just ones I've already tried.
I'm able to reply on the script's thread, so I posted for you.

Awesome, thank you so much!
You're most welcome!
Even if you reinstall it, you won't get your icon back... this is something related to application and memory problem... when I restored my backup, same issue again... didn't find any solution except installing lesser apps...
In my case some go application is causing a problem...

Interesting. Well, I figured it had to do with adding apps since that's the first thing I do after the deblur process is completed. However, I'm thinking there may be a way of forcing ADW to reload it, but I'm not nearly familiar enough with linux (or the ADW launcher for that matter) to figure that out on my own.
Oh well, as I said before, I can live without it if needs be. I'd rather have all the apps that are currently installed than the ringer icon. Thanks for confirming my suspicions, though.

Looking for Motorola Update Service components to disable to prevent OTA or OTA msg

Currently:
Android version 6.0.1
Model: XT1650-02
Build Number MCLS24.246-36-3
I'm one of many people experiencing issues with the Moto Z (Force) move to Nougat. In doing so, I have choppy audio, tinny sound, popping and crackling as well. When contacting Verizon, they claim that nobody else is complaining about this to a point where their company is notifying its CS reps with a resolution. When contacting Lenovo/Motorola, they claim that they've received a ton of complaints since the Nougat release, and suggested that I bring the phone back for a swap since I had only just purchased it. I did just that, and followed their additional instruction for not updating to Nougat. The only problem is that the freakin thing downloads automatically while on wifi within a day and no way to prevent it that I know of. Now I have this aggressive attempt of the OTA management to get me to start the process. I don't want to, but neither do I want to manage having to ignore this update every day, nor do I want to accidentally initiate the process. I'm looking for a bit of help.
I thought that if I disabled the Motorola OTA service that it wouldn't push. But it did push even though I stopped the service under developer options. And even now that it pushed, I hoped not to get the message, but there it is. And since I don't want to root yet, I can't clear the space in cache where the update is to prevent it from updating accidentally. I'm looking for the names of any other Moto services that might be related to the OTA that I can disable to prevent this from happening. I don't mind factory defaulting my phone and starting over to clear their cache, but once the update actually executes, I'm hosed with crappy audio again. My wife has the same phone and we have one day to get her a new one for free within our return period. We like the phone, do not want to get a different brand, and hope that we can find a solution to this. Again, I want to do this without rooting.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Hi,
I myself greenified the app called "Motorola-Updateservices", package name is com.motorola.ccc.ota, apk name is 3c_ota.apk
Since then I never had another notification that nougat is available and I didn't search for updates either of course.

About to download and try it out. If it works, I'll be back in a couple days to report. If it doesn't, I'll be back sooner. Thank you for the suggestion.
Also, if you can provide any specific configurations to manage the OTA, I'm at your disposal.
SuD
PS I won't be searching for updates either, but I will be bugging Lenovo/Motorola to find out when the bug is fixed.
I'm rooted, have xposed and the donation version of the app.
As the OTA app is a system app you can't greenify it without having xposed installed and the donation package of Greenify.
Try to just disable the app with the normal app manager.

Tried that. It didn't prevent download or notifications. Is still stopped.
/Shrug
In this case I sadly can't help then.

I appreciate the attempt. I know that rooting exposes me to many manageable solutions. I'm holding off for the moment.

Debloater still works on 6.01 run it and 3c_ota.apk will be near the top of the list.

It worked on 6.01 but no longer on 7.0. If you debloat on 6.01 and take the OTA to 7.0 everything you've debloated stays that way unless you do a factory reset.
for some reason google took away the ability to use the adb commands in 7.0
Almost like they want us to be stuck with bloat lol.

I just tried it and I get some permission error. So it seems after the Dec patch it no longer works on '6.
I have Moto Z Play -1.
any suggestions for someone who might have accidentally downloaded the system update, but hasn't installed it yet? It makes me nervous, having that "new system software is downloaded and ready to install" message b/c I know one day I'll probably accidentally click on it and there won't be a way to go back.
I am a Z play owner.
By installing Z (not play) apps I believe I have disabled the OTA. But I have no nagging update to test it's functionality on.
To my point, if this does work then the reverse should work also.
I will up my apps if anyone want to try it.
My OTA stopper https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3538812
Evidence it will work. https://www.darklaunch.com/2015/04/10/disable-motorolaota

Received the following error:
Code:
Processing changes to: Error: java.lang.SecurityException: Neither user 2000 nor current process has android.permission.MANAGE_USERS.
Drivers installed
USB Debugging set
RSA key accepted
Etc.
Seems a common error with some folks. As for me, this does not work on this phone at this time. Thank you for the nudge to look at this utility, as I have high hopes that its exactly what I need. I have posted in their forum, and have offered to test prototypes.
Thanks again.
