Flash Verizon Radio to Sprint Note 3 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Will flashing a Verizon radio to my Sprint Note 3 cause me any problems with Sprint?
I'm up in the mountains every weekend and have 1xrtt when standing next to my neighbor who has a Note 3 on Verizon, he's pulling 4gbs on 4G. I cannot connect to a server when trying to do a speed check.
I was thinking of flashing a Verizon radio for use on the weekend and re-flashing back to Sprint during the week.
What will the ramifications be? I won't be streaming or doing anything data intensive, just want to be able to use browser etc. I'm on the unlimited plan and unable to use much data due to the poor network build out in the area's I'm in.
Anyone have any experience with doing this that cares to share some insight?

I've done that using per helper from the at store and worked just fine. Shouldn't have any problems from sprint as long as you're not downloading movies or streaming large amounts of data

Thanks for your input. How long did you have your phone's radio flashed for? A couple of days at a time or did you have the radio flashed for an extended length of time? Thanks again for your help.

If you flash a VZ radio more than likely you'll get no connection at all. You can cause your phone to force roam utilizing PRL Helper and doing a search for the "00001 PRL" this will cause you phone to ignore Sprint towers unless there is no VZ coverage. Just be aware Sprint's getting more aggressive on off network roaming data. I got a warning email after utilizing half a day of 3G roaming

you dont change radios . dont listen to the second poster. you'll end up with a brick. run freezas rom has prl flash built in. i run a prl that has lte but allows roaming of 3g on Verizon towers. run it for a few months on and off no issues or letters from sprint.

Thanks everyone. I use prl helper and roam control currently. I have not used the 00001 prl yet. I know there's some custom prl's for switching to Verizon with your sprint note3. I have my phone on roam all weekend but am using a sprint corporate prl and am usually getting 1xrtt and occasionally with find 3g. I just need to be able to access google etc to find/look up things. Will 0001 prl let you roam on 4g also?

Verizon hybrid prl

I just loaded the hybrid prl to my phone and went from 1-2 bars about a quarter mile from a tower to 5-6 bars about a quarter Mike from a Verizon tower. This shows me that its not the phone that gets a bad signal, it is the service. I came from Verizon and I am used to everything working all the time, but on Sprint there are times a text won't go through. Does anyone know if I can do something to the phone to not show that I am roaming on Verizon now?

what roaming? I thought sprint has free roaming?
This no longer the case?
Can you give me some info on how you changed to the verizon prl?
You can't hide that. Just like you can't hide your phone from 911. Verizon is aware of your number roaming. They will charge sprint for every minute and kilobyte you use. Since your are using verizon constantly, sprint will be charged a lot for your use. They will then, sooner rather than later, terminate your contract...and again soon. See it happen in these forums before.
Your brand new evo3d will then be without a service.
What do you expect? You can't root and bypass your way past everything. Sometimes you have to pay for stuff. Plus, sprint is the only unlimited data carrier left. If people continue to do as you are doing, and teether, etc...then that unlimited data may become limited.
OK. Two things I don't understand. PRL noob so go easy...
First, our phones automatically roam Verizon's towers for both cell service and 3G. Mine does it all the time. So why would we need another PRL? When the Sprint signal gets weak enough, it's going to use Verizon towers anyway.
Second, both Sprint and Verizon have had a "free roaming" agreement for over a year. The way it was explained to me at my local store, the agreement is that Sprint and Verizon both share towers so in the (less likely) situation where Verizon coverage is weak and there is a Sprint tower nearby, Verizon phones will actually roam on Sprint. The way it was explained to me: neither company is "renting time" from the other's towers so I don't think Sprint is paying out the wazoo (at all in fact) for Sprint customers roaming on Verizon towers.

The PRL the OP put into place makes his phone roam on verizon constantly. A PRL serves as a handshake between the phone and the towers. Standard PRL looks for sprint towers, and if none are present it looks for verizon. The OP seems to have installed a prl that looks for verizon towers first.
You may be right about the free roam agreement, but sprint still cancels people's service if they are abusing this. Just happened in the Evo forums. There may be a free roam agreement, but verizon won't tolerate sprint customers exclusively using their bandwidth if they are not paying for it. They will then tell sprint that so and so number needs to be cut. Then sprint will send you a letter saying your contract is to be terminated on so and so date due to excess roaming. So, theoretically, this could happen to someone who has sprint, but lives in a sprint dead zone where they have to use verizon all the time.
Do it for long enough and they will cancel your service.
Where we live is a Sprint dead zone. Occasionally we do pick up the distant Sprint tower and my service says "Sprint" but I'd say at least 75% of the time my phone is using a Verizon tower since I work at home. Never got a spanking. Of course, I guess if I changed my PRL and they noticed I'm on all sorts of different Verizon towers (even where there is good Sprint coverage), maybe then they'd raise an eyebrow? I wonder if their setup is sophisticated enough to detect that you use Verizon towers all over town as opposed to using one particular tower all the time just because you live in a fringe area. Interesting.
What we really need is not a new PRL: we need the ability to change the phone's preferences so it switches to Verizon's towers earlier. For example, switch to Verizon towers ANY time the Verizon signal is better... not just when the Sprint signal becomes so weak it drops out.
Mike
FYI, they still send out free Airave's.
I'm not doing this to cheat Sprint. I can't even make a phone call at times and that can be dangerous and frustrating. I usually switch it to Verizon prl before work and back to Sprint in the evening. But I'm usually on WiFi all the time except at work. Today is day 30 or my 30 days. Maybe I should go back to Verizon

Yup.. I've got one, but haven't activated it yet... It kind of sux that I have to use my in-home broadband bandwidth to get decent service from Sprint.
Another thing that sux is that when I'm out on the water (Chesapeake Bay), Verizon has solid service where Sprint's service is spotty. Sprint's PRL is also set to NOT roam on these Verizon towers, causing a battery drain like there's no tomorrow.
Looks, like I might have to start using a Verizon PRL,when going out fishing..

Be careful with that Verizon PRL, after moths of using it, Sprint will call you and will cancel your account

Roaming data is not unlimited. So, if you roam every once in a while and pull down your latest email or check a map, etc., you'll be fine. If you're always on roaming data and pull too much data, you will be dropped. I've heard different numbers for the limits, but there is one.
Whatever happened to the ability to force roaming? On older devices we used to be able to pick "Sprint Only" "Automatic" and "Roaming".
I would always do that when I was getting crap Sprint signal.
I switched them using qpst. I have about 7 or 8 different prls saved to my computer I switch to to see what works the best.

Has anyone gotten in trouble for using the 00001 PRL?

I am currently using the 00001 PRL... which everyone seems to suggest is a bad idea. The area I live in is real **** for Sprint... Verizon rules the roost here. So, the question is, what am I risking by using this PRL?
According to sprint i have 800 roaming minutes, and 300MB of data. The minutes, I will never, ever touch. My last phone plan with T-Mo only had 700 minutes shared between my wife and I, and we never went over. In my home, I use wifi, so the only time I'd use data is if I'm out... though it is still possible I'd go over 300MB.
A lot of people seem to think Sprint will terminate your service if you roam to much. Do they charge you, or just give you the boot? I really wouldn't mind if Sprint booted me ETF-Free... I'd just switch to Verizon then. If they are going to give me a bunch of fees for roaming all the time though, this is a problem.
So.. has anyone here actually bumped heads with Sprint over this? What happened?
There's another thread here where some members complained because they got nasty grams from Sprint and a few were given notices they would be terminated in 30 days.
Another person ended up with a $700 phone bill because roaming doesn't count on things like mobile to mobile minutes and all.
I used it on the old evo last year and got a huge bill, as it wasnt covered under my $69 plan, but they let me switch to the $99 plan so I didnt have to pay
OK... thats what I needed to know. I don't mind getting canned, but I don't want a huge bill.
I have had the 00001 PRL installed for a day and data is so much faster. Tracking my usage at Sprint, I have used:
Sprint 3G data = 776,939kb
Sprint 3G roaming data = 51,466kb ( mostly from PRL 00001 usage)
I currently have unlimited usage on both. Without a doubt, I am strictly roaming on 3G data. Question is if Sprint will notify me of excessive roaming since I have unlimited usage on my contract.
**Note: It seems obvious that for some unforeseen reason, Sprint is purposely limiting our data speeds since a simple PRL file across the same 3G service towers is all that keeps us from 2mbps+ speeds. Data has been garbage since the first day on the EVO 3D; it is not a hardware issue but a carrier limitation...
I tried this PRL today and was wondering about getting charged as well. I would probably only need to use it a couple of times a month. What do you guys think, you feel that I should be fine?

I have some questions about this:
1) what exactly does this PRL file accomplish in relation to the OTA PRL received (PRL 21081)?
2) If I have unlimited data and unlimited roaming (data and voice) will Sprint even care if I use this?
3) I go to 2 campuses for my college and 1 of them has poor service and there's a VZ tower right near by that I could use, would this PRL allow me to use this tower and get good service?
4) does this allow you to receive greater than 2MBit\sec on the Sprint PCS network?
thanks

1. Makes your phone only use vz towers.
2. If you use it too much, yes. (not sure the amount (sprint gets charged for us using vz towers))
3. Probably.
4. No.
Lol, thanks for the itemized and quick response.
For me, the difference between using Sprint's prl and the 0001 Verizon prl is .4mb/sec on Sprint's and 2.5mb/sec on Verizon's. Pretty big difference. Just sucks that you have to worry about getting a huge bill or kicked from Sprints network for using it to much.

Roam control in chicago

I just thought I would share my results, roam control works great with this photon in Chicago. I used to have an epic and roam control didn't work here in Chicago, but it does with the photon. For those of u that don't know what roam control is, its an app that lets u force your phone into roaming. For instance at work, I have 1 bar. when I use the roam control app and set my phone to roam I get full service. But be advised too Much roaming willget u kicked off your contract. Also u need to be rooted to use the app.

Can u force 3g using this on roam?, there is a way but a little lengthy

I use Roam control quite a bit and was glad ti was updated to work with the Photon. When I'm roaming on Verizon the PRL determines if it will allow you to utilize 3G or 1X data. I changed mine to 1115 which is a business PRL that allows full 3G data when roaming on VZ. In fact the speeds surpass Sprints 3G in most areas.
how do you change prl? nvm did a search for it, and found it

Yeah i noticed the second i roam over onto verizon, the speeds blow out sprints...Although the ability to just roam at will comes in handy when im on the phone and im entering my apartment. I have no sprint coverage, i use an air rave. So before i step inside and lose my call i roam over with roam control, and bam my call doesn't drop! Definitely a rooted phones best friend!!!

Trust me its definitely worth the purchase. Also changing the prl is also very handy...just try not to roam to much, sprint can terminate your contract for roaming to much...
I've noticed mine kicks out of Vz in less than a minute, and the icon looses the triangle. When I go check the phones settings, whether I have it set to "CDMA Only" or to "Automatic", it always gets kicked back to "Sprint Only". I am on the latest update, and am rooted again.
Is anyone else having this problem, or is this an old problem you have solved already?

All roaming is done on 3G. Sprint's and Verizon's 4G networks are incompatible (LTE and WiMax).
In Chicago we roam on US Cellular, not VZW, and I only get 1x.

No I don't think anyone has made one of those. Is us cellular a cdma network? Have you tried the 1337, or 3137(can't remember if this is correct but it does start with a3). Or maybe even that sprint business PRL 1115 I think it is.
The Sprint business PRL (11115) only allows for roaming on Verizon I believe. I don't believe they have any roaming agreement with US Cellular, unfortunately.
I tried the 115000 and it didn't work as well as the 00001

I checked into it, and one of sprints reciprocal roaming agreements is with us cellular. However the agreement is only for voice and 1xrtt, but no 3G. We could find out all the roaming agreements if someone put their sprint PRL into one of the PRL decoders floating around out there.

Yeah, that would make sense. 01 is a custom PRL, and its targets are to force roaming on to Verizon towers. 15 is a PRL encoded by sprint for business customers. Its main target is sprint towers, but directs the antenna to Verizon towers, and all the other company's that sprint has roaming agreements for. It only does the roaming though if it can't find a sprint tower. Also with 15 it will settle for roaming towers that only have 1xrtt, as opposed to the custom PRLs that aim for Verizon 3G towers whenever possible.
Try out the other 2 PRL
there is 01337 and 31337 PRLs. I have yet to test the 31337 but 01337 works well. 00001 targets Verizon towers by default before Sprint, and if that one doesnt help you much I dont think 01337 will either as it is just a modified 00001. 11115 Wont help either as you still have some Sprint service so it still defaults to that network.
Here are 3 US Cellular PRL files for you to try:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EFOKA16L
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=O6JINILZ
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9W7K02BI
15096 allows 3G roaming. Enjoy
Is it safe to install prl 15096? I have an EVO 3d with free roaming
sorry havent checked back in a while, I will give all 3 a try

First off, it is too dangerous to use any of these unless you have a plan with unlimited roaming. However even so sprint has gotten very sneaky. They have advertised unlimited roaming, but just like their unlimited data if you do too much [voice or data roaming], or a majority of your usage is roaming [even if you barely use any] your contract states in fine print that they can terminate service. Now so long as you aren't tethering a ton, or using lots of data they don't seem to mind, but if you do they send you a warning, if it persists they terminate you. You should not get charged ever with the plan you have, and you shouldn't get terminated unless you hog data. Hogging data on sprint is bad enough but hogging data on Verizon via roaming is very wrong. They won't terminate you unless you are abusive, so I hope you have nothing to worry about.
Since Megaupload is down could you please repost the prls
Thanks

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I have been searching for an EVDO US Cellular PRL for around a year now, and have never found one. I tried yours, and they work. How do you go about extracting them from a phone? I've never been able to figure that out. I really needed this since most of the places my Sprint phone roams in have little to none Verizon coverage, while there's perfect US Cellular 3G.

PRL 21090 data speeds are really bad?

Has anyone else had their data speed crap out on them after updating from 21089 to 21090? After updating this morning, I'm seeing a "1x" above my data icon now and even SpeedTest is timing out. If your data is fine, are you on a custom or stock ROM?

Once again, stock PRL's have no effect on data speeds when you are on the Sprint Network. Stock prl's only affect what towers your phone connects to when roaming.

Do you have proof of this? Seems to me the prl tells the phone which towers to connect with, Sprint or otherwise. Why would they bother updating it so often, if it is just used for roaming? I seriously doubt they spend that much money on man hours just to update roaming towers.
Preferred Roaming List. Sprint phones will automatically connect to sprint towers. The PRL is only used to tell the phone what towers and frequencies to connect to when roaming.
Then explain prl 00001 that only connects to Verizon.

The PRL affects every tower the phone connects to. ON network or OFF.
The list contains data about every access point on or off network that the phone can connect too. It then has priority set for on network access points so those will be chosen over an off network access point.
Roaming two definitions
1. When a wireless device associate automatically with a different access point.
2. When a wireless device connects to another providers access point.

Because it sets the Sprint towers as the roaming towers, thus the phone thinks Verizon towers are the towers it should be normally connecting to.

YOU MIND PROVING YOUR STATEMENT?
Everyone that got the update did a profile update. SINCE THEN EVERYONE IS HAVING THE SAME SLOW DATA ISSUE! SPRINT PURPOSELY DID THIS!
Sprint's data network is crap anyway. And I highly doubt Sprint would purposefully release a PRL to limit phone's data usage.
There was a prl pushed last year that everyone got and everyone was stuck on 1x data. I think this might have been when I was on the lg Optimus s, can't really remember... But either way, I traveled quite a ways back and forth to work, data never changed from 1x. Reverted to an older prl, I got 3g back. I know prl is meant to control roaming... But I think there's more to it than that. I've seen first hand it affect more than when I roam. But I will buy that it won give anyone faster or slower speeds from the same network other than affecting HOW it connects to the network.

By that rational you prove my point. The PRL does tell the phone which towers to connect with. Which in turn could effect data speed.

Well, it would appear that something is amiss here with the PRL. I am running a custom rom, and when it was loaded, it had 21089 as the PRL. Data speeds here and places I travel were acceptable. Now this past week I was on the road to a location that according to the sprint coverage maps should be "best" for the coverage, but the entire time I was there the phone only had 1X connection at what could be described as sucky speeds at best. The fact it indicated 1X would tend to tell me it was actually roaming and not actually on a Sprint network. So is it possible that due to agreements they have in place with other providers, they show coverage in areas they actually have no towers and are using other providers towers? I may be wrong, but it is my understanding that those of us who do not have the "corporate" PRL are downgraded to 1X when roaming. Now that I am back in my home area, 3g is back and everything is back to normal.
By the way, I did not do a profile or prl update, so I am not sure when or how 21090 got loaded.
I do plan on contacting the folks at Sprint and see if they have any explanation for this level of service. Do not have a lot of hope here, but can't hurt. I will post an update if they give me anything actually useful!
Have a good weekend everyone.
