Has anyone installed and tried Google Dialer on this phone yet? If so which apk did you use? Any problems?
What google dialer are you talking about? It already has the stock dialer from aosp on the phone.

Has built in caller id and you can type in names of nearby places to call stores and such.
I have and works perfectly.

Is there anything special needed? Root? Disabling the stock dialer?
No, I have it installed but I have 2 phone apps in app drawer, you can't disable the phone app that comes with the phone.
Just tried it. Moto assist does not work using the Google dialer. So when I'm home, the phone no longer let's me answer the phone with voice activation. I use that more than I'd use the Google dialer features, thanks for posting the apk though.

Thanks for the link and info!
Any time I do the location search at the top of the dialer in the APK I get a force close of the dialer. For instance I can type "Home Depot", as soon as I press on the result to select it I get a FC.

I'm pretty sure you need more than just the dialer apk to get that functionality.
I was looking for a way to have that functionality as well, and after a little research I found out that the location search on the dialer is an exclusive feature for Nexus and Google Play devices :crying: . I had that on my Galaxy S4 GPE and I liked that feature too. Found a post on Android Police explaining on how to make it work on other devices, but a lot of bugs can happen.

I've updated to Android 5.0 out of the box when I got my phone few days ago. - This morning I've installed the 1.1 Dialer APK linked in this thread, however, something did not work, when I pull up the app info on the only icon in the drawer it tells me version 5.0-10.
However, if I go into Settings > Apps > (Downloaded Tab) I see Dialer 1.1 is installed, under (All) I still see Dialer, and version lists 5.0-10 - The 5.0-10 is the stock moto one for Android 5.0, and this one does not have the caller ID, reverse look-up.
I might try disabling the 5.0-10, but from what I understand, that messes with the phone in a big way?

I'm not sure what can happen if you disable the stock dialer app, maybe prevent you from making/receiving phone calls if you don't have another dialer app installed? That's just my guess though, never actually did it to check. Were you able to make the location feature work?

I was unable to get the Caller ID to work, the phone shows me that they are both installed ( Settings > Apps ) - however, the one that came with the stock/factory ROM is preventing the 1.1 version for loading/showing at all in the apps list, so short of disabling the stock one (which I understand is not something one should be doing), I can't even open/access the offloaded one (Dialer 1.1)
I might get brave and disable the stock dialer, see if the Dialer 1.1 surfaces in the apps list.

I think that no major issues should arise as long as you just freeze the app and not uninstall it with titanium backup, but again, that's just my wild guess haha. Anyway, leave us posted about your findings.

OK - Got it Working!!! - Not Really, it crashes.
Step #1 - Download/Install the APK from this post
(will need a file manager to browse the phone to where the APK was downloaded to)
Step #2 - Create shortcut for Google Dialer 1.1 that you just installed using QuickShortcutMaker
Detailed instructions are HERE - Start at Step #3 on that page.
(Stock Dialer should be the only one showing in app drawer, you need to make a shortcut for the Google Dialer 1.1)
Step #3 - Win!!!
Some Pictures as Proof in Puddin
Stock Moto X Lollipop 5.0 Dialer / Settings
Nexus Android 5.x Dialer (Dialer 1.1) / Settings / Results
Google Dialer 1.1 shortcut above Stock Dialer shortcut.
Since trying this app initially, I've rooted my phone, and I've tried to follow steps outlined in (http://htc-one.wonderhowto.com/how-to/install-new-kitkat-4-4-3-dialer-your-htc-one-0155515/), specifically Step 2 - Where the app is installed in /system/priv-app/ folders - I am sad to report this does not work still on MotoX
As previous users suggested, there are probably those other services the Dialer depends on that need to be installed.
I'll update if I find a solution.
I don't know if it matters but I had a Nexus 6 before getting my Moto X. The Google Dialer was version 2.0. I didn't grab the APK before returning it but I'm sure it could be pulled from the factory image.
I was unable to make this work, root/non-root.
Got it working, here -http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/themes-apps/mod-google-dialer-messenger-pure-edition-t2982408

I'm on ConROM v4 (Senseless), and I just got Google Now partially working on my Rezound. The search works by typing but trying to use voice keeps crashing.
No guarantees, but here's what I did:
1. Downloaded the apk here
2. Used Titanium Backup to uninstall Google Search.
3. Removed the Search Bar widget from my homescreen.
4. Install the apk. Reboot
5. Add the search widget back.
6. It's ask to Authorize to your account twice. Agree to both.
7. Use the text search widget. Trying the microphone crashes the app.
Curious if the geniuses here can get voice working.

I can confirm that it works on SlimROM 1.6
Be interesting to see if we can get voice working. With dev's dropping left and right, I can only hope.
There's a few threads elsewhere on XDA about it, one way involves doing build.prop edits, voice is still screwed across the board though.

My guess is the voice component requires the newer API, but it could also just be Sense screwing things up...

That's not the problem. There are build.prop editing threads that change the devices api version, but voice is still shot.

That's because you're not really changing the API at all, just what version it reports. Making it show a higher number does not actually mean your device supports the higher API version!
You can change the version string to make Gingerbread report as Android 4.1 - again, this will not actually bring any Android 4.1 features to gingerbread.

unfortunately youtube has stopped
Im running the KT kernel.
I keep trying to send a group text which gets converted to MMS and I get a message stating that it can't send it right now but will send it when service becomes available. I am on wifi but never had this problem with Alliance Rom. Do I need to change a setting? I'm using stock messaging. Could it be that I am using a different kernel other than stock?

I have heard other users report that issue before with 3rd party kernels in the main thread. I have tried the function on the stock rom (granted quite a while ago) and it did work perfectly. I would try flashing the stock kernel and see if the issue persists.

Try going to Settings/Language and Input/Voice Search and make sure that everything is enabled. On a side note, if you updated to the latest leaked lollipop version of Google Now or the launcher, Ok Google functionality is broken.

All enabled, I installed The Xposed Framework and Xposed Installer from your bundle, could that have messed it up?
Voice recognition works if I open the Google Search app and press the mic, also "Hi Galaxy" isn't working for Hands Free Mode.
Thanks for the help
I chose Google Launcher from the install menu when I setup the ROM, maybe that did it? I uninstalled it and restarted, still nothing.

Well if you are refering to OK Google command, make sure that you have the search widget on your home screen or you can enable the ok google anywhere option in Google now settings. Xposed by itself and any of the included mods should not really effect anything depending (of course) on what mods that you have installed. If You want t troubleshoot than just uninstall the xposed framework from the xposed settings and reboot. You can always just reenable it with the touch of a button. Of course the last case senerio that I would recommend is doing a full wipe (data, system, cache and dalvik) and doing a fresh install. That should definately fix the issue as long as its not hardware related (your phone itself).

A silly question; how to get project infinity lockscreen wallpaper back? It's not in wallpaper list...
I noticed you updated on the 24th is that the new release?
I'm on v8 and my phone refuses to screen cast to my Samsung TV.. My girlfriends unrooted T-Mobile S5 does it just fine every time, but mine just says "Connecting.." then drops it every time.. I'm stuck as to why!!
Any other download source than Mega upload?
For some reason my post about the above topic disappeared. Thought this was the Q&A forums but now I'm not so sure.
Was wondering if there was any other way to get this other than downloading an extension that is corrupt and wont tell me where its downloading my files at?
There are NO options to set as for my files to download and I will NOT let it download to C:/ drive just in case it opens a backdoor to allow viruses onto my computer. Call me paranoid all you want too.
Is it being hosted on any other sites that I can control what gets installed and where? Even Pirate Bay allows you to save files wherever you want too. I'm not asking for much. Just dont want my main drive to get whacked by some crap that I have to install just to download files "over 1GB in size you need our extension" . Ummmmm no I don't. Just download the file and allow me to put it where I want to put it. Thats all.
Google Drive or Dropbox account maybe?
Have the v4 and v5 as they were hosted on androidhost or something similar. But then you switched to Mega.nz for some reason. Don't know why. Thanks for anyones help in this problem.
Hi all,
I've received the OTA update to 7.1.1 (kudos to Wileyfox for delivering!).
However, I'm not too keen on the Truecaller dialer they bundled...
Any suggestions on an unobtrusive T9 dialer? I'd be happy to have Google Phone back (the Marshmallow dialer) but it seems to be unavaible from Google Play...
Thanks
I got pointed to this one here: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google...gle-phone-8-0-148481159-android-apk-download/ and will give it a try.
Try ExDialer from Modoohut from the playstore. Supports a number of themes and so on.
Google dialer 8 from apk mirror can't be installed on the device.
This version is ok: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google...-7-0-140861421-nonnexus-android-apk-download/
This looks also promising, but I haven't try it: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-google-dialer-t3557412
Thanks, i see that I linked to the wrong version. I installed the non-nexus version you linked to and it's fine.

That's not the same... There was a Truecaller mod on the standard C.os dialer. You could disable it and never see it again . That was not the case in this update.
The stink is being raised because the two questionable pack-ins - Zen and Truecaller - can't be simply disabled. Otherwise most users who didn't want the stuff would just disable it and move on.

That's... weird I can't remember how I did it because it literally took seconds... But hey, even here a fix is just a download away. I'm quite happy with the Nougat ROM, just with a different dialer and launcher (in fact I had already replaced Trebuchet by Nova before)
Google Play store says it's not compatible; I've tried various APKs and when I go to install they also say incompatible.
That sucks. What might be the cause? I know the S8 can install it.

As per the notes on the thread, this older version is the only one that fully works on Non-Nexus devices. The newer patched versions may install but are often buggy and lack the necessary framework for spam call rejection and other features.

You have to ensure that the Google Phone app is actually properly set as your default Dialer/Phone app. I had a similar problem until I did that. Under settings, go to apps and then click on "Configure apps" under the three dot overflow menu on the top right. Make sure the correct app is listed under "Phone app".

Thank you thank you THANK YOU! :good:
Been searching for days to find an apk that works on my LG V20, and this works perfectly - even location search.
On the S5, S6, S7, S8 you were able to tap Messages, enter a mobile number, tap compose and send a text message to that number. On the S9+ I am unable to do this. I have to add the recipient to my address book contacts before being able to compose the message and send it.
Is this the new way of doing this? I contacted Samsung who said they were going to take over my phone and take a look but after I sent a small video clip of me trying to do what I described above they closed the support call and replied, add the number to your address book.
This cant be norm now? is it ??
ok so following on today samsung have said that its by way of design on OREO when i told them i have checked S5 to S8 models, but my friend has the S8 which is on OREO and he can!

You don't have to add them to the address book. Launch Messages, you should see a list of your conversations with a little "chat" bubble at the bottom. Tap the bubble. In the search field, enter whatever number you want to text. Once you enter the number, you'll see it below the field with a + next to it. Tap the + and you'll go back to a list of contacts. Now go up and hit START. This brings up the texting screen for the number you entered. No entry into the address book.
The irritating part is that even though it's Oreo, the S8 Messages app is a different version with a far better feature set. (Individual message sounds, backgrounds, functional font sizes, etc.). I don't know why Samsung thinks the S9 Messages app is a step up.
Thanks for that tip, ive since found out that the message app version i need is 4.4.11.1 where as my default one is 5.0 but upgraded higher.
You can download an older version from Android 6.0 from the google play store but i cant seem to see anything newer!
Can you download older version apk's from anywhere is? Messages V 4.4 would be great! thats the version on S8 Oreo.

Not 100% sure if the old Messages app will work on the S9. If you can find it, give it a shot, but I think we're stuck with the 5.0+ versions on there. It really annoys me because I was used to all those features they pulled. Not sure what the benefits of the new version are supposed to be.
Like i said, ive already installed messages from Android 6 which is version 3.x i just cant find a version 4.x which is the trouble now. looked everywhere.
It works for me. Stock making app v5.00. Type in a number, select the number and hit start.

This isn't true.
You can use the current version no problem, without having to add the number to your contacts. I think you're assuming that in the newer version, when you type the number, and press the + button, it's going to add them to your contacts. But it's not. If you read it, it says "Add to recipients", meaning add the number to the recipients of that message only.
So just open the messaging app, type the number, press the + and type the message. Done.
There's no need to downgrade the messaging app, and there's no need to add anyone to your contacts list.

Just use whatever version is installed in your phone already. It doesn't matter which version you have.
Sadly since i made that post i have somehow managed to uninstall the default app and i cant get it back, its not disabled its completely gone so until i can find a way (without reflashing) um stuck with Android 6's version 3 messenger app.
Someone sent me their apk for 4.4 but it wont install, and i cannot find v5 anywhere.

Unless you're rooted, that's not possible. It's a system app. Maybe you changed the default messaging app?
Is it not still in the app drawer? Or can you change it back to the default SMS app in Settings > Apps > 3 dot menu > Default Apps > Messaging app
Yeah full system root. I did it because i thought the 4.4 failing to install was because i had a much newer version installed, i made a backup first with titanium before doing so but when i came to restore it i couldnt.
lesson learned.
