I should of mentioned that I went back to total stock then OTA'd. So I;m not rooting anymore. I think to use any of those link you still have to be rooted.
I may be wrong but I may be stuck for while until rooting the stock NC5 is figured out
The funny thing is I read that a lot of the updaters are having battery issues. The funny thing is that since the upgrade my battery usage has been very good. Typically with 4.3, I was at 64% with the screen stat. With the KK I'm at 34%.. Besides being in the power saving mode, I am using 2 apps I never used before too- Super Task Killer and a Sense V2 Flip clock a weather clock widget. Still using Clean Master because you don't have to be rooted.
Thanks
You can go back to MK2 and get root back. The following post has three peeps saying they have done it after taking the OTA nc5 update. They used Surge1223's method to downgrade.

Hit thanks if this helps. Hope it answers your questions.
I'm normally one to be able to do research on my own, but i'm deployed and on a satalite internet connection that is slower than what is considered acceptable by even the old 56k standards, so I come here for help.
In a few weeks i'm going to be hitting port again and I'd like to update my phone from Hyperdrive 14 into the new hottness HD 17. Every guide that I've found online for the installation of HD17 says that it needs to be NC5, or at least MK2 baseband install. I'm currently on MJ7.
Do I need to update from MJ7 to MK2, and then to NC5 just to install HD 17? Or can I just update from MJ7 to NC5 and install HD17. As far as the end of the NC5 upgrade guide, what is the point of reverting from NC5 to MK2? Just lots of questions - I'm also fairly new to SafeStrap - the way that I understand it, only the stock rom slot is working; could I just install HD17 and forgo the NC5 install, or is this mandatory?
Thanks for the info in advance. You've all helped me out lot.
yup, gotta be on nc5 to use any kitkat-based Safestrap ROM
also sorry about the internet, might want to try tethering using the phone. sounds like 4G will be a lot faster than what you have right now haha

No you do not need to upgrade to MK2 from MJ7 before installing HD 17.1
If you use Surge's instructions you can upgrade everything but your bootloader to NC5 and that way, if you ever needed to downgrade, you still can.
Here is his method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726868
Then once you have NC5 installed, follow instructions from HD thread to get to 17.1
Awesome. I'll give this a shot once I get to port, and to an internet connection. I was very confused as to the point of Surge's post - why not just flash NC5 and be done with it - But that's awesome, able to keep my MJ7 bootloader with all the benefits of NC5 firmware. Thanks for the info and the help!
Hopefully this will happen soon - Never really know when we'll pull in. I'll reply when it happens though! Thanks again!
New member here. Bear with me, please, for possible n00b questions.
I'm not new to rooting & ROM'ing. I've been rooting and ROM'ing for years, but I haven't done much in a while due to excessive work schedule and family obligations. But I'm looking to get back into it.
I've had my VZW S4 for about 9 months. I'm rooted, but running stock ROM.
Phone: i545
Android: 4.2.2
Baseband: I545VRUAME7
Kernal: 3.4.0-690088
Build Number: ...ME7
As I said, I've got lots of experience with rooting and ROMs. I flashed my prior phone easily over 100x experimenting with different ROMs. But since I'm going from 4.2.2 to 4.4.2, I think I better ask regarding my strategy to be sure I don't end up with a brick.
My general plan is to: update my phone to 4.4.2 via OTA update, root, flash recovery, then experiment with various ROMs. Specifically, these are the steps I'm setup to follow:
Back up everything (App's, contacts, bookmarks, SMS, etc.) via Titanium -- actually, I've already done this
Perform factory reset in its current state (4.2.2)
Accept OTA 4.4.2 upgrade from VZW ==> I assume this will revert phone back to UNroot status??
Re-root via Towelroot
Download SuperSU
(Remove KNOX??)
Install recovery
Install ROM
Questions:
I've read about Samsung KNOX. If KNOX is "triggered", Samsung won't honor the warranty. But I don't care about the warranty at this point, so is the whole KNOX thing a moot point for me?
Anything else I should be aware of? Any experienced users of S4 that see an obvious gap in the above plan, I would be much appreciated in hearing your advice.
For what it's worth, I've been studying the following YouTube video for what lies ahead.
"CyanogenMod 11 (CM11) on the Samsung Galaxy S4! (Install, Setup, First Look, and etc)"

1. DO NOT TAKE THE OTA
2. read the forums regarding what your options for recovery. Don't try to flash cyanogenmod or you'll end up with a brick.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using XDA Free mobile app
I've been researching this for a couple of days, and obviously I'm missing some details.
Why not take the OTA for 4.4.x? What am I missing? What's the issue?
Doing some more research this morning...
When you say: "read the forums regarding what your options for recovery. Don't try to flash cyanogenmod or you'll end up with a brick."
I read from another post: loki allows you to install whatever you want, not just Touchwiz-based ROMs. If you want to install CM, you've got to use Loki.
So I need to perform the loki hack first, right? If I install CM without the loki hack, I will brick my phone?

Loki only works on MDK, the firmware version before me7. everything after MDK can only run safestrap. Can't downgrade.
You can use the OTA but it will fail if your system is modified at all. If you know all modifications you've done and can remove them, go ahead. If not, use the NC5 tar file in Odin to upgrade.

Excellent, thank you for providing this info! I'll look into Odin.
For clarification...I have performed certain "modifications" since I've owned the phone. If I perform a factory reset on it in its current state, does that not remove/reset all of the mods I've done??

It should, but not always. Also you have to use the unroot from the supersu app.

Oh and the tar files are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735172
I recommend using Odin 3.09
You're saying I will need to un-root prior to performing the NC5 Odin?
Do I need to worry about changing/updating my old ME7 build before the NC5 Odin?

No, you only need the unroot if you try the OTA. Nothing else needs to be done to use the tar file with Odin, but I would recommend backing up important data to an external SD and flashing the full wipe file to ensure you have a clean system.
Latest OTA "patches" TowelRoot
I've read recently I've read that the OTA will fix the vulnerability that TowelRoot exploits to gain root. But most if not all of the articles were specific to the S5. It is possible that taking the OTA will patch the same vulnerability and remove root again. It's been a long time since I've had to work this hard to root/ROM anything...so I'm not sure if I'm correct or not, but it's something to consider before taking the OTA...if you haven't already.

Towelroot works on NC5, the latest OTA for this device. Towelroot came well after the OTA. If we get another firmware update, I'm sure it will patch towelroot.
I've had my VZ S4 since sometime around Dec of 2013. Previously was on a DroidX, I've really honestly never had any problems rooting or installing custom rom's on my phones (A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU HERE that made that possible) so I'm not a noob...but I'm not an expert either. I usually wait and read a lot of threads, follow the instructions and I've always been good to go. My S4 started at MK2, (took the OTA right out of the box, now I now better ) and with the help of K1mu's post on rooting the S4 with Saferoot everything went off with out a hitch (thank you!!). After successfully rooting the phone, I installed Safestrap, backed up the stock rom slot, created a custom rom slot and installed Hyperdrive 11...everything is working flawlessly.
So fast forward a year to KitKat I returned to XDA...read and read and read and followed the Dev's instructions and was good to go again. I know it involved Safestrap-I545-3.75-KitKat-A03.apk, TowelRoot, Odin and ALL_VZW_I545VRUFNC5_I545VZWFNC5_1151670_REV06_user_low_ship_Multi_Cert_Tar.md5. Definitely was one of muniz_ri post. Any way I basically used Odin...flashed back to factory stock followed muniz_ri post and was good to go again with KitKat(Thank You!!)
So now to the present, about a week or so ago I had an OTA screen pop asking to update, it actually showed 2 updates available (don't know if there is a log in the S4 that keeps track of the updates). So I came back here of course and started reading and reading and reading...and I was ready to begin the process in this thread by muniz_ri: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-to-update-to-i545oc1-5-0-1-keeproot-t3096558 which again I am sure would have went flawlessly. Then I had an accident...I had been dismissing the update (it popped up a lot ) when the unthinkable happened...I pressed yes, the phone went thru the update process and I don't know what update it was but it wasn't Lolllipop...so I was like phewwww, clicked on my RootCheck (JRummy) and it said Rooted 4.4.2 KitKat (NK4), SuperSu 2.46 so I figured everything was ok. Not so, I don't know what the upgrade was but I no longer have root or access to safestrap, SuperSu or any apps that require root...and this is where I need guidance from the masters. I have a TWRP/Safestrap back up (stock-2014-12-08--19-33-37 KOT49H.I545VRUFNK1) from right after rooting for KitKat, nothing else...just root I'm pretty sure of that. So what would be the best way to fix? Is there a way to re-root the phone in it's present condition? Can I use the TWRP back up some how with out SafeStrap? How far back can I down grade with Odin using a VWZ factory image? Any idea what happened with the update prior to Lollipop? Sorry if this was long winded, just trying to figure out the best way moving forward. I don't really care about the data on the phone. Before going forward I'll do A Keis back up of the stuff I want to save. I appreciate any help/answers/suggestions...Jinx
I've been looking for hours and I just want to make sure I am doing this the most efficient way possible (and also correct).
I was on NC2 and then my phone broke and Verizon sent me a replacement but it is NK1. I have it rooted but am confused what to do next. Is it not possible to downgrade from NK1 to NC2? Do I have to downgrade to MK5 and then upgrade to NC2? I really just want to restore my Nandroid backup but at this point I'm not sure if it's worth it. My phone has also prompted me for 2 updates which I assume are Lollipop related so I have denied the request.
I'll also add that I have a mac and in the other forums have read that JOdin3 is no longer working because of an incorrect deb file? If anyone has any insight on this as well, it would be much appreciated!

nc2 is a leaked build, and is virtually identical to the released version (nc5)
you can downgrade from nk1 to nc5 (and nc2 i guess, use nc5 instead)
i use windows so can't help you with the mac problem. other than maybe set up boot camp so you can run a non-gimped os

Do you know if a nc2 ROM will run okay on nc5? I have looked under all of Giglis files and can't find any files for nk1 downgrades. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks for your help!
I finally got Safestrap 3.72 to work but why won't it restore my nandroid???? Help.

nc2 ROM will work with nc5. look for the nc5 odin tars from @Surge1223
or Google. that helps too.
as far as your nandroid issue, I personally always have trouble with nandroids, so I use titanium backup to just back up my apps and their data and spend 4 hours waiting lol
Ah thank you! I had pretty much given up...now I am just wondering what ROMs will work with NK1...haha I also did the same, used tibu to restore everything on my phone and wait 4 hours for it to restore to my new phone
