GT-i9300 Revert Back To 4.1.2 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have been trawling the internet for a couple of days now trying to figure this out and have just got more confused.
My wife has a Samsung Galaxy S3 (GT-i9300) which automatically updated to 4.3 a while ago. Since then it has been an absolute pain to use. Battery life is dreadfull, random reboots, freezes/lockups etc. This appears to be a common complaint with the 4.3 update and the general consensus appears to be to revert back to 4.1.2 which is much more stable.
I'm fine with the actual process itself using Odin but what I'm having problems with is which firmware to download from the SamMobile website.
I am in the UK and the phone is unlocked and does not have any network specific applications on it. If I key in *#1234# I get the following:
AP: I9300XXUGND5
CP: I9300XXUGNA8
CSC: I9300OXXGNE2
Looking at the CSC code list this would appear to be a multi-CSC (open) code covering Ireland/Macedonia/Poland/Romania/Serbia and Montenegro/Slovakia/Switzerland, etc
This is obviously the wrong code for the UK. I bought the phone off Ebay about a year ago so I don't know where the phone originated.
Looking through the list of available firmware I cannot find one labeled OXX. Would I be ok using the 'Open Europe - OXA' or 'United Kingdom - BTU' versions which both have the following:
PDA: I93000XXEMG4
CSC: I9300OXAEMG4
Modem: I93000XXEMG4
...or would this brick my phone, and if it is the wrong one to use, which one should I be going for. All these CSC codes are very confusing.
Thanks for any advice
P.S. just in case it is relevent, the phone is NOT rooted.

It doesn't matter if you not rooted.Use Btu one,it's for Uk but only MG4 one otherwise you will loose network since earlyer version cannot read Efs 2 which you now have on 4.3

Thanks very much for that. That's exactly the information I was looking for.
Withe regards to the EFS, I have seen reports that the IMEI can be lost etc and you should back up the EFS partition. Is this only relevent to rooted phones as I cannot find any way to back this up without being rooted.

Yes,you can backup efs only if you are rooted. Just use this one,Mg4 and you are good to go. I did that,no problems. I think there are two 4.1.2 Btu Mg4 firmwares, use the latest one( not that is's that important)

Thanks again.

Factory reset after flashing, in recovery, before first boot to set csc. Also it will bootloop if you don't.
Before you flash, try factory reset of 4.3 and format internal sd card. I found 4.3 to be much better than 4.1, once all the bloatware was turned off.

I've tried that. I did a factory reset last night, then charged it up over night and this morning it was completely locked up and wouldn't come out of sleep (it was difnitely turned on last night). I had to hold the power button to force it to shutdown and reboot. Then once it had booted the battery percentage is dropping alarmingly and the phone hasn't been used for anything yet. There isn't even a sim in it at the moment.
I've seen a few posts from others where, like you, 4.3 is running well and has been an improvement. However there are a lot more who are having these major problems. It all seems very strange. It got to the stage where my wife just couldn't use the phone because she would go to work in the morning with the phone fully charged and by mid afternoon the battery is dead and that's without actually using it much. Add to that the fact that it would frequently lock up or reboot and she had just lost all confidence in the phone. It was never like this before the update.
I wish we knew what makes one phone, like yours, work so well with the 4.3 update and others to be so bad. However, it can't be that straightforward or Samsung would have fixed it by now.

It sounds like your firmware is corrupt or your phone has damage to the nand memory. You could flash the latest BTU firmware to test.

That's a very good point. I hadn't thought of that. I've got nothing to lose.
Now I'm back to my original problem of which firmware to download.
Under 'United Kingdom - BTU' there are two listed as follows:
Nov 2013
PDA: I9300XXUGMJ9
CSC: I9300OXAGMJ9
Modem: I9300XXUGMJ9
and
Dec 2013
PDA: I9300XXUGMK6
CSC: I9300OXAGMK6
Modem: I9300XXUGMK6
So what's the difference between GMJ9 and GMK6.
It's all very confusing.

GMK6 is the latest, flash that one.

[Q] I9100T Telecom NZ Branded how to save firmware

Hi all i have returned to the android scene from IOS trying to work out a means of downloadong the factory/carrier Firmwares i remember from when i had a i9000
It was possible to force kies to download the releasle from Samsung with the spoofer tool despite googling for two days straight and trwaling thru the forums i have not been.able to find a means or even of a download of the. firmware im wondering about
Galaxy S 2 running 2.3.3 gingerbread
PDA: I9100TDOKH1
PHONE: I9100TDOKG2
CSC: I9100TTNZKH1
Im presently dubious about attempting to attain root on this device if i cannot get kies to flash it back to stock rom or even.maintain a copy of this rom
any heads up or advice where to move forwards.
Im hoping the carrier soon releases the 2.3.4 update shortly... failing that i will just debrand with another 9100T rom
cheers any advice for the next move would be great!
I would suggest asking Intratech for it in his carrier-branded firmware thread in the development section. The Voda firmware is listed, so TCNZ's shouldn't be too hard for the man to track down.

Keep trying on fus.nanzen.se. Finally it will hopefully give a response. I have added it to the preset list even though it's not giving a response atm.
I'd be quite interested in a dump of your stock Telecom /system/csc/ folder if that'd be possible?

Wow on further inspection... thats what i call a Awesome/Innovative Tool!
Nice work man!
I think it may come available soon
I think Telecom only released their branded handsets in the last 6 days.. so perhaps the Firmware will come available soon..
Failing that maybe the 2.3.4 update will be what comes available (if ever)
Perhaps a debrand is inorder...
It sounds like Telecom have fairly heavily modified the firmware which is going to make future updates very slow. By comparison Vodafone left it almost completely stock-standard.

Yes you should flash a stock ROM or AOSP ROM. Flashing doesn't void warranties these days. You can reset your download count using what's called a USB jig aka resistor, So when you break it you can just reflash a stock rom reset the download count an Samsung will never know any better.

Any 2.3.4 Stock/AOSP Roms you reccomend for the I9100T
I was going to root first so I could suck all the CSC , efs etc etc out of the phone
and then go for DarkyRom2 but not sure
With regards to wiping the counter i thought there was a second counter that cant be wiped yet!

Yup, thanks very much. I'll trawl through that and see if anything is worth shoe-horning into my Vodafone-derived SGS2.
Was there a TNZ sub-folder inside the CSC folder?
Edit: This section suggests fairly conclusively that XT does NOT support Fast Dormancy (figured as much so no surprise).

If you do flash a firmware and you want a JIG to reset it then I've got one you can borrow if you're around Wellington. Otherwise I think mine was about $12 including postage off eBay.

Here's an email I received after asking Telecom if they supported it in July (originally posted on Geekzone):
Thank you for your email query and we apologise for the late response, as this needed to come from our network team. Please find their response below:
"No we currently do not have NCFD feature enabled. Because only the handset benefits from Fast Dormancy for battery life purposes. In fast dormancy the handset notifies the network to release the air interface so it’s put into IDLE state much quicker than going through to Cell-FACH and finally to Idle. This can cause much more signaling on the network between the RNC, NodeB and mobile device which (increase in signaling load) can lead to congestion.
We have a number of features on the network that can work with Fast Dormancy and not cause a large increase in signaling load, however there is no current ETA for deployment."
Should you require any further assistance please email or call 0800550120 or *120, we would be happy to assist.

Harvey

I've been running darkyrom2 with no issues at all, and I'm undervolted. Have you tried that yet? I've never lost data on any non-wipe flash, but also use titanium back up, so am safe if I do.
Is there a link for the stock firmware now? Which modem does it use?

I've used many different modems (probably all of them to be honest), but am quite happy with the KI3 one at the moment. It's giving me no issues as far as XT's network goes, but I don't travel a lot so am not really a good judge. It does give me more range with Wifi though, something I have had issues with on other modems.
No idea on stock firmware. Has Intratech posted a link? He finds most of them.

Failed firmware update question on international version

Hello,
I've done some searching and have seen some with the same issue. When I go to update it says:
"Failed to update firmware due to network or server problem. Try update update.. or try using kies."
Message started out of the blue a couple weeks ago.
Kies says I'm up to date. Tried through Mac and PC
Went to recovery and cleared cache and tried again. Saw that advised on another forum. Tried on 3G and different wifi networks. Possibly Samsung server error, but strange it lasted for weeks?
Baseband is I9300BULF1. Not rooted or anything.
This is my first Android. Mainly trying to isolate if an update is available or not and if there is a problem how to resolve.
just wondering if kies is up to date? Worth a check, personally I never use that rubbish, Odin for me!
thanks for reply.
I had checked and made sure Kies was up to date. I mainly use Mac, had just downloaded a version for PC, but made sure was latest version.
From what I see there are different versions based on region, etc.. Not sure if/how to tell what the latest version should be.
Latest firmware to flash is LG9 firmware.
It doesn't matter where you are, you can still flash it.
Go to samfirmware.com and you'll find the latest and you can flash it via Odin, way easier than that ota nonsense.
I've had 6 android phones and never once have I waited for an ota.

I have this file downloading
"Singapore (StarHub) 2012 July 4.0.4 I9300XXBLG9 I9300OLBBLG2"
From latest search that was the only one I saw with LG9
looking up info on odin as well. Looks like that's PC only program, but no problem.
Going to give this a go tonight.
Thanks
Lg8 is the same but European version I think so depending where you are it may be advisable to flash that, I'm fairly certain lg9 is the Asian version of lg8 so may not have your csc if you aren't Asian?

Yes, good point.
All custom roms are based on lg9 but then again they are all multi csc.
At the end of the day the csc doesn't really matter, its only related to carrier/location based bloat and crapware.

I have the international version. Just saying I'm I'm the USA as something was mentioned on first Page about LG9 and Asian. Browsing from phone now, have to do more research. Still new to droid
It won't do any damage to your phone if it is the intl version, it just may not be optimized for your particular network (HD voice, fast dormancy) and on the other hand it may be just fine.
tbh there is no official firmware for the intl s3 on American networks.
In fact there is a thread here for setting up the intl version on at&t by ceo.mtcl, look it up.
It won't do any harm to your phone tho, I'm in Ireland running a custom rom and its lg9.

OK, s so it's great because i have th eright one.
one last question. as i still have no imei i'm going to take it to repair or return to t-mobile.
when i go to odin mode it says this:
odin mode
product name: gt-p9305
custom binary download: no
current binary: samsung official
system status: custom
why does it show custom? i still have root installed, should i remove it? how do i remove it?
it's better to remove it if i'm giving it back to t-mobile.
Custom means its not official firmware or been rooted .
Triangle Away to reset rom counter .
#Flash your original or stock rom reboot then factory reset .
jje
i'll give it a go, but i think root not going away is the problem here.
will report back in 10 mins when i've done that.

I read about someone trying that in one of the other threads and it didn't work.
Can't you use triangle away then flash the stock rom?
i already done that, but it still says status = custom in odin mode.
all i want is for the status to say "normal/unmodified/official" whatever it is supposed to say when out of the box. then i'm happy to take it to a repair centre and even pay a little to get it repaired if i have to.

[Q] "La'Fleur" ROM after emergency recovery with kies

Hello!
After flashing many custom ROMs and leaks my phone was acting a little funky, so I decided to go back to factory stock. I fired up kies on my pc and went to "Emergency recovery" It asked me for my serial number (I thought this was for getting the right stock firmware) After everything was done the phone booted up normally but I ended up with a "La'Fleur" boot logo
All I wanted was my stock firmware (Without having to look for the firmware, modem, etc myself) I though kies would do a better job than me :silly:
Sigh...
Any of you experienced this before?
Same problem here
Dont know how this happens...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk
Kies gives you the firmware that matches your serial number. So, your phone originally has this firmware, or an earlier version of it, i.e. your phone was branded.
If you don't like it get the latest unbranded firmware for your region from sammobile.com and flash with odin.

Anyway, it worked for me because it restored the stock modem and cleaned the whole nand. As soon as I saw that "La'Fleur" logo, I wiped it and threw CM 10.1 at it. Working great so far.
My point is, Samsung should do better (as usual, with everything) at keeping their records.
Well, none of us know what happend. Could be the carrier originally planned to carry this model, bought it from Samsung, and later changed their mind and sold it to a third party.
Nothing to show Samsung's records are wrong.

Well, I bought mine at a retail store, unlocked and without any carrier bloatware. Just to point out "La'Fleur" is a special edition of galaxy devices featuring a special 'floral' design paint coat, that Samsung released for valentines; with ROM customization to match the design. As with mine being the plain grey version and using the 'official' method to get the stock ROM, I think I'm pretty safe to say that there's something wrong going somewhere at Samsung.
This is exactly what I was trying to avoid downloading the firmware, modem, etc and flashing it myself, getting something different than the one that came when I first took it out of the box... And this is exactly what I got using Samsung's method. LOL
Kudos at Samsung! /s

After flashing is the answer .
The hdswver codes that are presented to Kies match that firmware release and that's what you get .

I got that too. Before you do anything to your phone, make sure yo do a Nandroid backup, also make a backup for your EFS partition as there is where your IMEI and radio paramaters are stored.
I had to send my phone to Samsung, and they replaced the motherboard.
Sorry to hear this happened to you

Sad to learn that I am not the only one. Need to change lock screen. Has anyone tried to get help from Samsung? thanks

need help updating

Good day fellow xda'ers. I have a problem updating my gs3. Its been a month(s) now since i cant update my phone. Mine still running on 4.1.2 JB. And i cant update to 4.3 or 4.4 if available. Whenever i try updating it either OTA or via kies. It tells me that i have the latest update/firmware installed. Can anyone help me update my phone to official update that will not compromizing any of my phone or will still be available update in the future. Or doesnt mess up my phone or will not result to any issues. Or dont loose any official samsung capability here. Thanks in advance. Because as i read in some forums. Updating my phone manually will cause any issue like not able to receive official updates in the future or cannot use, update or download any official samsung apps.
MODEL NUMBER: GT-I9300
BASEBAND VERSION: I9300XXELLA
BUILD NUMBER: JZO54K.I9300XXEMMA2
OTA only works if you have unmodified status and the correct CSC code for the country you are in, corrupt data or firmware can also cause update failures.
If status and CSC are correct then try factory reset, if OTA still doesn't work then follow the guide in general forum, sticky on how to flash an official firmware using odin. Download the firmware from Sammobile.com, choose the latest firmware for your country and factory reset after flashing.
Ahm,how can i check for the status and the csc? Sorry for being noob here sir. The thing is im just a bit scared to brick my phone. And if i may ask sir does installing a firmware using odin will not affect my phone or cause further issues. Because as i have read in other forums that flashing a firmware will cause me not to receive official updates from samsungs. And how will i know if the firmware is compatible in phone and in my country as well. Because to be honest i got this phone from someone. And i dont even know what country it came from. This is really frustrating coz you know it wont give me updates. It always saying that i already have the latest update which is not . I dont even know if the data is corrupted or firmware like what have you mentioned.

Search and read for how to view your CSC, dial *#1234# in dialler should do it.
If your phone is undamaged in anyway then flashing an official stock rom won't break anything, but will enable OTA updates.
However, if your phone has been messed with then any firmware after EMG4 will break network connection.
Chose the latest firmware for your own country, the country of origin is immaterial.

Heres what i have found out so far
AP: I9300XXEMA2
CP: I9300XXELLA
CSC: I9300JVEMA1
so,what do you think is it ok if i flashed it manually? Pardon me for being a noobie here. I just dont want to messed up my phone dude. And i dont even know if my phone is already messed up with that EMG4 thingy like what have you mentioned. Please help. How do i find out if my phone is undamaged and is ok to manually flash.
If you manually flash the same firmware as you have now, EMA2, then factory reset you won't break anything, but should fix OTA.
OTA will then update to the latest firmware, which is when you will find out if your phone has been fixed. There is no way to tell other than try it.
Search and read about efs v2, it changes a lot of things including sim lock, imei and serial number validation. If any of these things have been repaired then efs v2 will break your network connection.

I beg you pardon regarding this matter sir. Hmm,so how will i know if its compatible to my phone? About the firmware. And if i flash that thing manually will i be able to receive future updates coming off from samsung? One more thing this is really confused me what will i flash? The 4.3 firmware or EMA2? Do i really have to do that efs v2 thingy? What does it do to my phone? Is my phone really broken? And what exactly you mean about breaking my network connection. Im really sorry about this . Im really frustated about the situation. Can you please help mwnwhat should i do?
