Just a dumb question, but what makes an OTA update different from a ROM? More specifically, why can OTAs flash fine while retaining user data while installing a ROM generally requires data to be wiped?
Thanks
It's never required, but is recommended. It can cause issues with a new ROM and it's also been known to sometimes cause issues with ota updates as well. Some people would have to wipe data after doing an update to fix strange issues.
I know in the past when coming from a 4.0 ROM and going to 4.1 or higher almost always needed data wipes. Some data gets associated with an older os and when that data is copied to a newer one, that app may not be compatible with the newer os version, causing issues.

I've only got my S4 four days ago, but I've been ROMing before then for years. Things are a LOT tighter here in S4 land, as you can read all over. ROMing started in the old non-locked down phone days, and is still heavy on Nexus devices. Nexus devices are the ones that are first out the door with a new Android OS. The 'Nexus 5' by LG is out now to introduce KitKat (4.4). As soon as the new Android OS is released on Google's Open Source servers, ROM devs grab it and adapt it to a zillion other phones. Up until last Friday I had a custom ROM 4.4 KitKat on my Galaxy Nexus (got it from VZW on day1 Dec 2011) using full CWM recovery mode to swap ROMS in and out any time.
Answer to your question... an OTA OS is what they want you to have, with all the Samsung/VZW add-ons, a nice safe for them package. A custom ROM you load can be anything else, super clean AOSP Android, or heavily modified with all sorts of cool add-ons various developers have created. Since these S4's are so locked down, devs are really restricted in what they can do to a ROM, and it a real headache to get them loaded after that.
My phone came with MI1 and I rooted it an hour after getting home with it last weekend. I played with Safestrap, but decided there wasn't anything worth ROMing out there for an S4 compared to what I knew on my old open phone. I took the MK7 load 2 days ago, still rooted thanks to the write-ups here. The Samsung/VZW 4.3 is actually pretty nice in my opinion (once you 'Turn OFF' some things or 'Freeze' them with Titanium Backup). I don't plan on any ROMS for the S4. I'm actually relieved with that. ROMing becomes an addiction. My dog is happier with the new phone too, as we get to go on more walks with my new found non-ROMing time.
I have a Motorola Droid Razr Maxx XP912 and have been using the rooted Verizon Blur 4.1.2. Yeah it is jelly bean and it is nice, but I wanted 4.3 and since the CyanogenMod 10.2 worked so well on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 GT-P5113, I wanted to use the same kind of ROM on my phone.I just love this CM10 ROM. It is good looking and so highly customizable that I cannot help but to love it. The good part is now in my tablet, I check for updates and Cyanogen will make updates available OTA and my tablet is always up to date and rocking.
(I broke the dammed digitizer outter glass once, got a new replacement on eBay for $21 and was happy as a clam. Doncha know I dropped it two days ago on way to doctor and broke it all over again? Another digitizer is on the way from China again, takes about 6 weeks to get here and is not that bad to replace.)
This rooted Verizon Blur ROM is great, does what I want, with Titanium and Greenify, I have gotten better at making it behave better, but I am stuck and cannot get updates for it, OTA has been disabled or I will lose my root. What I want is CM10.x for it. Tried 10.2, Safe Strap installed it easily with gapps, but no data service. Had to go back to CM10.1, now I got data and phone again. But a lot of my favorite and essential apps do not work anymore, like Wireless Tether for Root Users and some others like MeContacts. Now I find out from a decent fellow the following:
cyanogenmod has stop develop all phone with old OMAP...include our razr
We'll never see an official CM11 or a new stable 10.2
Oh crap, my favorite ROM and my phone are just never going to walk down the isle together. CyanogenMod with a Razr phone is not ready for prime time and it never will be. Shame, I spent days on making it the way I want it and was SO happy with myself, until I began to see way too many thing not work anymore.
I am on disability and money is forever a problem. Verizon would love to get me to update my phone, but always want to charge me like $200 to do it and then take another 2 year contract. The digitizer outter glass on this Razr has a very tiny crack but it is hardly noticeable and works quite well. So, what's it going to be? Update the phone to a better one (This one is slowing down pretty badly, does not run super fast like when it was new. Too many apps are always updating needing more horsepower and memory.) or pick a good ROM that I will like, that offers updating and new versions like CM, OR, update to a better phone and if so, what kind will be good and be around for a while? The Samsung Galaxy looks pretty sweet, big screen and a LOT of horsepower. What would you guys suggest?
I know, I know, I will get hundreds of different answers to this but the more, the merrier. Bring it on folks, what would you do? I am itching to get on with this so be forthcoming, please? What other ROMS are good for a Razr Maxx XT912 that would give me Jelly Bean 4.3, are very customizable, and produce regular updates and maybe even an updater service like Cyanogen is now offering? I love the fact that I can go to Settings/About, and check for new versions and updates and Cyanogen updates OTA. I cannot do this with my Verizon rooted 4.1.2 blur ROM or I will lose root and it is getting harder and harder to find exploits to gain root again. And NO, I do not want my phone to look or act like an iPhone!
Opinions, suggestions, personal experiences guys, please?
Try unofficial KitKat by dhacker or carbon or slim rom, all found in dev section
Edit : Carbon has the most modification options, it's worth a try
Tapped from my RazR
I'm not sure where you got that info about no stable CM10.2,but its not true. There WILL be a stable 10.2 for every device currently running nightlies.

install safe strap and so you can partition the phone and try out a bunch of roms without wiping your current. it's really handy. i prefer cm10.1.
Hola,
Need some testers... Lollipop lickers.
NOW TESTING:
GOLD ROM 1.0 a2: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952599995
Really a well put together ROM minimal theming adds gold text and shades of gold to different stock apps of the phone adds to the visual appeal I think. Its also very very fast. Scored higher in benchmarks than any other ROM I've made or ported. I believe this will be the final public 1st release for US var
Super6 v1 based on Albe95's S6 1.5: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952604733
Beautiful doesnt speak enough to the visual appeal of this ROM. Besides out performing Stock and nearly every other ROM for Lollipop (xcept GOLD) its all S6 ported apps except for a few Note4 apps I snuck in instead of buggier S6 ports. Only kept the flawless S6 ported apps which is everything but camera and I'll be swapping out the phone I believe in the actual public release. need some feedback on this 1 as I'm not completely sure all will have same results
I'll be uploading deodexed-debloated Stock ROMs later today. Along with 4 custom ROMs very soon. Test for these here before public releases are posted in Development section. Please give me feedback on any issues with the ROM and be sure and specify which your using! For now installation procedure is the same as my newest ROM: Echoe v49 found in Development section. ALL MY TESTS WILL USE SAFESTRAP OPTION OR TWRP FOR MDK USERS. NEVER FLASHFIRE UNTIL ITS KINKS THAT CAUSED ME TO KNOX 0X1 ARE WORKED OUT AND IT SUPPORTS AROMA OR SIMILAR INSTALLATION OPTIONS! THE WAY THIS I UPGRADE HAS 0 RISK FOR EVER BRICKING DEVICE OR BREAKING WARRANTY!
Coming soon...
Albe95's S6 Port for VZW!
Albe95's Lollipop 3.1 for VZW!
CarHD Lollipop Port VZW!
Stock Debloated-Deodexed-Rooted Lollipop with Install Options for VZW!
gogolie's gogoDeluxe Lollipop VZW!
GPE 5.0 Port VZW!
a few S5 to S4 Lollipop Ports awaiting permissions to use!
a brand new, sick and ridiculously overboard in terms of options, themes and mods available custom rom I'm calling LiCK for VZW!
A few never before seen US ports of Foreign ROMs!
I'll take suggestions when I'm done with above ROM's all of which have been built once but more time/testing/bug removal is needed before public release. Stay tuned to this thread for updates on these and more!
-thats all for now
gogolie
just in case
I better snag this too.......
Can't wait for the GPE 5.0 for VZW.
Let us know when FlashFire is safe to use and I'm up for testing at that point!
Add me to the list of folks anxious to see if you can get a GPE 5.0 for VZW working, especially if it's something that can work with our SafeStrap-limited phones.
Sure, add me to the list of beta testers!

Although I really hope you can get this working. I really doubt it... a bench of us have tried, and other than getting a bootanimation to come up, we haven't gotten very far... the issue lies in the fact that Samsung changed the way that the ART runtime works with the Samsung Kernel, and therefore, the Samsung kernel is looking to deal with the Samsung ART runtime, and the AOSP ART just loops at some random error. If we try to switch out the AOSP ART with Samsung, the ROM fails to even boot to bootanimations.

well thats no fun np I hadn't a chance to try the build yet but I literally was about too just running thru my threads answering user questions now... maybe theres hope in @hsbadr Multisystem as a work around or was that as a possible option explored already? I guess they may have to settle for a Hybrid if thats the case. But I still have confidence no one even thought GPE was a possibility on i545 till i brought out those 4.2.2 ROMs and proved it was indeed possible with SS. Then over course of last summer when I found all the International GPE ROM's that would boot and were converted into what we have for options now on 4.4.2 -4.4.4 til now we've either found work arounds for issues or fixes. I was literally about to release a fully working gpe 4.4.2 rom with mtp, wifi and a killer aroma installer with a sh*T load of options before lollipop came out of nowhere... I'm doubting the your negative attitude np ;P looks like @Joe-Tech was able to get a 5.0 GPE ROM to Boot. From looks of it based off Echoe GPE. I'm willing to put down $50 says we have at least a semi functioning GPE ROM by end of the month. what are u gunna call kitpop when 5.0 rolls around? I'm thinking the name no longer fits bro lol better start brainstorming that 1 bud heres Joe's 5.01 test zip he had gotten it to boot and as far as the setup screen before being plagued with FCs and restarts. Did ya'll check that out yet and see why hes able to get a lot further than a bootanimation? I know I've been gone for a while but literally nothing has changed til a week ago. I just wish a breakthru on the bootloader would happen already.... sick of crossing my fingers and hoping would hiring a qualcomm dev to do some internal research help maybe petitioning them with all the bounty money would be easier than cracking it via an undiscovered exploit. christ i just realized im way too baked wrote a minibook response and can barely hold my eyes open. hell at this point im just happy we finally got lolli. I was really doubting if verizon was even going to release her for a while there lol

Well, Joe said it boots... but not one can get it to. He released that Zip, and multiple ATT testers confirmed that they couldn't get it to boot either, following his exact instructions. It is based off Echoe though, haha.
As for you 4.4.2 KK GPE ROM, you got MTP working? Mind sharing how you did so? I got UMS working as an MTP alternative on the ATT variant, but UMS doesn't work for the VZW model, as the VZW CD Installer takes over in the place of UMS.
Haha, I thought about the new ROM name actually. I'm thinking of calling it NextS4 or something similar. That's granted we can figure this all out BTW, it you want it, we did figure out WiFi AP, and packaged it into a nice WiFi AP app for the GPE SS ROM's, you can just yank it out of KitPop if you want to use it. It just requires Secure Settings (the app), XPosed, and Root.
So many options!!!
Unfortunately it didn't fully flash since It had an error during installation after install the apps. Right now, I couldn't get my phone booted and having issues flashing via Odin. So I'll have to try this again once I reflash the partitions on my phone again and reroot and all.
Will try to update once I've gotten everything done.
Bring on stock rooted, deodexed, debloated. I'm in.
I can do safestrap if you need it...

hopefully uploading in a few hours. only setback on her was the phone/contacts rebuilding the APK kept causing weird FCs for Phone. Really annoying actually. If I pop another Phone into the Stock Phones place it works like a charm. Havent had a chance to see whats really the issue with that specific apk because I've been so overwhelmed with all these options and having to catch up to the rest of the scene thats been on and used to lollipop. i will say ive had better benchmarks than ever before with the few ROM's I just uploaded. The 1 will be instant favorite around here. just hoping everyone gives Gold a shot too cause its my fav so far...
but heres a few for you guys to test... let me know if you get same result with Albe95 S6 port with the phone which is that it works but its weird from time to time wont let you hang up or use dialpad incall. I'm working a new version of this ROM before public releasing but its a really really cool ROM Albe's out done hiimself. Personally looks better than S6 Stock to me (not a fan of the ugly VZW Swamp Green on stock dialer)
I'd wipe System and Data when installing these ROM's... but feel free to try dirty not sure what the results will be. Remember 1st boot of Lollipop ROM's takes a good 15mins sometimes just to load the System!

Tried the GOLD version a couple of times.
The first was obviously a bad download.
After another download, the second resulted in a bootloop.
I'm on MDK with TWRP 2.8.4.0. Do I need to upgrade TWRP or something else I need to do? I've been able to boot other AOSP/GPE/CM Lollipop ROMs but may be missing something.
neither rom works
I downloaded gold and super6 a few times
each time did an advanced wipe and then tried each rom ... neither has an aroma installer?
both rebooted to stock recovery screen
so i am now flashing another gogolie rom to play with
any ideas what i missed if anything?

Just to follow up. I have been successful at flashing the stock Lollipop from muniz_ri so my problems appear specific to the GOLD ROM (haven't tried the other yet).
getting ASOP to work is gonna require a pretty substantial rewrite of the ROM source
the issue goes much deeper then samsung fiddling with ART
most likely gonna need to wait for samesung to release vzw LP source and then see what exactly they changed
not impossible but I highly doubt by the end of the month

Thanks for the update. Wish Samsung would have just left Lollipop alone -_- especially when cm 12.1 runs so well on my ageing Toro GNexus.
So I just picked up an SCH-I605 JB 4.1.2 I was going to intall TWRP but low and behold it is already there, v2.5.0.0
Being this phone is a couple of years old I am overwhelmed by what is available on this forum, I need to upgrade, and I want to install Cyanogen.
I decided to not go to LL as I see some members are having problems receiving phone calls, and that is a deal breaker for me.
If any one could recommend some links or a quick walk through to get me where I want to go that would be great.
TIA Bob
K, Here's a little background. I've been using HTC Products for years. Kinda stuck on them. Way back when the HTC ONE Max was released I purchased 2 through Sprint VIA the upgrade Program. One for me, one for my wife. She preferred Samsung so I boxed hers back up, and well, forgot about it until last night when going through my dresser. I am going to activate it on my account, and retire my old one and just use it on a spare line I have ( now that my oldest son has his own plan ) for data, etc. I want to make some changes to it, and since its been soooooo long since I have rooted or used custom rom's. I am hoping some of you guys can help me out. There isn't much activity here for this phone right now, mostly folks having issues or looking for the cheap way. I am not concerned with dropping $25 on viper if needed, I'm all for ease. What I really need is advice on what methods to use to achieve my goals. Basically I don't care if I run stock rom, or custom. I just want to eliminate all the bloatware, Be able to tether the phone for wifi, and be able to access and use certain apps that require rooting. That's basically it. If I need to flash a custom rom, fine, so be it. What are the most stable roms out there for this phone that are still receiving updates. I have really tried using the search function to find the current procedures to S-off, root etc, but its pretty much a mess out there searching for current stuff, as many threads go back years. Hopefully this thread can kinda be a current guide to help folks like me that really like there Max's, at least till the next HTC Phablet comes out ( if ever ).
I would really appreciate any help you phone Guru's can give, especially since this is probably such a low demand device right now.. It would be really awesome if someone could post step by step, and include links to current info/downloads..The phone in question is running 4.4.2, Sense version 6.0, Software version 3.03.651.3
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!
Root; Sunshine to s-off and then TRWP and viper rom with sense 7
