[Q] Custom Ringtones & Notifications ? - Samsung Gear S

So I've got this watch which can call & text, email and also tells me I've sat still for to long. But when the simplest of tasks, that being a custom ringtone being applied, i see no function to do it. If any xda member knows otherwise please fill me in.

Connecting to PC and put it in your folder is my first thought. Though, I'm wondering if you could also just send music to GS and be able to.

To add custom ringtones to your Gear S (directly from phone):
- Install "File Transfer Gear" from Samsung Gear Apps.
- Copy desired ringtones (.mp3 files) to /ringtones folder
and that's all.

So are you saying we can not simply put a ringtone in the sounds folder and assign it? We have to us an app in order for it to work? I thought notifications were in ogg format

You can "simply put" ringtones (music, photos and other files) by USB cable from PC or by bluetooth directly from phone using this app.
You are right - ogg files can be used.
amr, 3gp, aac, wav also.

So maybe I am doing it wrong I bluetooth over a ogg. sound and a mp3 song It saves to download folder. I move to sounds & ringtones nothing on device Just the stock sounds. I do the same plug to computer and ogg sound and mp3 same result. I see nothing in my Gear S for the sounds I just added

You must copy those files to /ringtones folder.

Again I created a ringtone folder (there was not one) I have added ogg sound mp3 song I also put the same files in sound folder.
they do not show up in gear anywhere. Assuming they are going to show up under ringtones or notifications they do not show up anywhere on the Gear S so now what do I do?
I thought we need root first to add any ringtones/alerts/notification sounds?

Using the transfer app is the easiest way to copy across any ringtone or notification tone. You do not need any root. It's the same principal as using custom tones on your phone.
I just tried it and it works. I transferred two .ogg files and they show up as selectable tones in sound settings.
The only thing I found (with ogg files) is that they don't give you a demo of the sound when you select them. They do work when the watch rings however.

Someone managed to copy notifications tones to Gear ??
I have no problems with ringtones but no idea where to copy notifications

I noticed that too.

Yeah I'm still trying to figure where to put notification tones to get those working any suggestions anyone?

Just create a notifications folder and put the tones in there. Make sure it's on the same folder level as the ringtone folder. That's what you need to do in principle but you may need root as the file transfer app, windows explorer and even Kies don't have access to create this folder as far as I know. I am still looking at alternatives though.

No, you don't need root for ringtones. Which was the main query from the OP.
But for notifications there doesn't seem to be an easy option at the moment. It may not need root actually and I only said in my previous post that it 'may' need root.

Sounds like you added a corrupt or unsupported media file. Try removing all the ones you added and transfer again but 1 at a time to see which ones work. Also check what file extensions they are, low bit rate mp3 is the most compatible, ogg files are also supported.

Thanks but its a pain in the behind to copy ringtones 1 at a time, i noticed that some files don't copy well if i select multiple ringtones to transfer and it shows _ sign beside it, i think that Tizen is not as good as android and isn't there a way to drag and drop files from pc to watch directly?

I still cant get ringtones to show even. i used usb and created the ringtones folder in /ringtones but still no luck. what am i doing wrong?

You don't need 3rd party software for this. The native alarm app will play your mp3 files.
There is a file-size restriction, but I don't know what it is. I remember getting a file of mine to below 3MB before it would list it. Try that.
They need to be in the windows folder on your phone. You do not have a windows folder on the storage card (you certainly shouldn't have, anyway!)
Alarm Rings
johncmolyneux,
Tried your suggestion but it did'nt work. Brought the file down to 186 kb but did'nt show up.
anymore?
gr fred
Must admit I'm interested in this too and have been working away for the past few days trying to find a solution.
So far all the files I have are converted to wma, have been reduced in size to match some of the other ringtone files in windows, have been named using the same naming convention as the windows mobile ringtones, have been checked to make sure that the properties of the files are identical, have been copied into the windows folder and /or the ringtones folder and.......
Still can't get this to work.
If anyone has been successful doing this please share your method exactly with us.
Cheers
WB
For alarms, it has to be a WAV file, in the Windows folder of device memory (not storage card).
Very detrimental to the memory space, I know....so I only have 1 custom alarm tone. Size wise I have a 3.5mb file, and it works fine. No need to care about naming conventions.
This is old...but still relevant. Iirc mp3 doesn't work as alarm file.
All you need to do is copy the mp3 file to your Windows folder and then set that as your reminder. Set your alarm sound as something short and the reminder will play as your alarm.
you need to convert ur mp3 to wav n place them in the /windows folder of ur phone memory....i didnt get any size of length specific issues, but hey i wasnt specifically looking for one.
I didn't need to convert it, I just copied the mp3 to the windows folder and it worked no problem.

Yes...this is a workaround, and saves putting a WAV file into Windows directory.
so far i tried:
1. putting mp3 in windows directory - didnt work
2. renaming mp3 to wav - didn't work
3. converting the mp3 from 192kbps to 128kbps - didn't work
4. converting mp3 to wav - works but file is huge
5. converting mp3 to wma - didn't work
6. renaming wma to wav - works like a charm
so conclusion - convert your mp3 to wma, rename to wav and put in windows directory.

i'm guessing there is a way to make mp3s work maybe a specific format bitrate etc. but since it's not determined yet mp3>>wma>>wav is as easier a solution as any
Converted mp3 to wma. File size 681KB. Renamed to wav and copied it into the Windows directory (not the "Rings" subfolder but the Windows root folder) and finally showed in the alarm sounds list but I'm unable to select it it choose "default" sound then. May be its too large.
I have no problems using any MP3/WMA ringtone by putting them in \My Documents\My Ringtones.
And if that matters, I always use mono instead of stereo (2 channels aren't exactly useful for one speaker).
EDIT: Just confirming WMA works in the My Ringtones folder here; wasn't sure about this. I use a 243 KB file of about 40 seconds (ring is 30 seconds anyway).
If you want to use a custom sound, i.e for SMS/Email received, connection established or any other notification, you'll need to make a WMA or WAV file and drop it in \Windows\.
EDIT2: ...and I'm using Dutty's rom (WM 6.5).
The HTC alarm aplication(cover up the ugly windows version thingy) doesnt allow you to select MP3s. not sure why.
Open the windows mobile alarm app and you can select mp3s if they are in your my documents folder . Might need WM 6.5.3 though.
Wierdly when you select it in the windows alarm app, it shows the file in the HTC app.
Again, all my custom sounds are in mp3 format dropped into \Windows\ and I have no problems applying them. I'm just using the standard ROM Version 1.43.206.4 (70315) WWE.

Because you're using the reminder workaround, not actually changing the alarm sound.....it's different from what the rest are trying to do.
I see what you're saying, but it's not just the alarm. All my sounds, ringtone/sms/email are all in mp3 format.
Finally after converting it to wav (not just renaming wma to wav) and placing it in windows folder it worked. Unfortunately the file is 2.8MB, no matter it's a mono

[Q] Music player

How do I exclude folder on the stock Vibrant's music player?
I believe you can put a period at the beginning of a folder to hide it from being indexed from the Gallery or Music applications. (So a folder called ".Music" would be hidden.)

This is true. I tried this when I wanted to hide my custom ringtones from the music player, but when I did it hides the folder from the entire system. The result was I could no longer choose (see) custom ringtones from the system settings. I wonder if there's a way to hide files/folders from the media player while still keeping them available to the system sounds settings. On my mt3g, the media player ignores files in the directory sdcard/media/ringtones. On the Vibrant, the player shows all media files no matter where they are placed. Anyone?

I got around it by renaming my ringtones from .mp3 to .mid, seems the music player ignores .mid files.
But since the stock music player doesn't have a homescreen widget, i went ahead and bought MixZing, which lets you select what folders to play music from.

...and the .nomedia file it recommends placing does the same thing as putting a period in front of the folder title, thus hiding its contents from the system settings.

remove ringtones/alarms/notifications from music player

so my dad just started using his vibrant for music, and it annoys the both of us that all of the ringtones show up. I tried the .nomedia file, and that did work for the music player,
but it also made picking the ringtone for the phone impossible.
so is there anyway to do this?

place an empty file called .nomedia in the directories where the ringtones, notifications are.
I do as follow on the linux box
Code:
touch .nomedia
adb push .nomedia /sdcard/media/ringtones/
And so on

apparently you didn't read my post. I didn't use adb, but i created a .nomedia file, and put it in those folders. And it did work, they didn't show up in the music player.
however, it ALSO removed all those files from the entire system. If i go to pick my ringtone, they don't show up, not in the stock picker, or rings extended.
anyone have any ideas?

I doubt if there is a solution to this, unless someone is hiding it from us. I also only know about the .nomedia file, but it does totally eliminate it from the system and not just from the player. The same thing with the picture Gallery - it shows all the icons and folder.jpg files also = VERY annoying.
As far as I know, it has always been an issue which I only have to live with. - any updates will be appreciated, please.

I use an appacalled ES File Explorer to do any file management.
the .nomedia files appear to hide files from the gallery, music player and video player apps when that "media search" occurs upon disconnecting USB or powering up. Doesn't seem to remove them from the system.
Using the file explorer above I can very simply navigate to and play/view any such media in with whatever player I wish to. Suggesting trying ES file explorer out.

interesting, i'll give this a shot. I know manually adding the .nomedia file through windows or astro kills it from the entire system, except obviously for file managers.
well i tried creating a .nomedia file there, same thing.
but i really do like the UI of that app, so i guess the best thing to do now is just put .nomedia files everywhere and use that app to find my ringtone.

[A]How to hide Ringtones/Notifications from Music Player, Remain visible to system

I have scanned various threads regarding this topic and we all know how even if you place your ringtones/notifications in a different folder than your music files they still show up in Music Player
We also know about the 2 workarounds: Use a different music player that lets you pick which directories your music is stored (best solution so far) or put an empty file named .nomedia where your ringtones are. That is not a good choice since it hides the ringtones from media scanner and therefore will not be selectable as a ringtone or notification unless you use a third party app.
Workaround #3: (my preference)
I followed the instructions from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7375013
1) - On your sdcard, create a folder called "media", then create another folder in that called "audio".
2) - Inside the "audio" folder, create 3 seperate folders called "Alarms", "Notifications" and "Ringtones".
3) Convert your ringtones and notifications from MP3 to WAV. Yes they will be slightly larger, I converted PLAINRING.MP3 > WAV and it went from 74kb to 613kb. Not a big deal.
4) Copy the WAV files to the correct directories you just created and you've got tones! They will be hidden from Music Player but they will show up with all your other ringtones and notifications.
No need for root or any third party apps...unless you want to convert MP3 to WAV on your phone instead of a PC
Thanks for sharing...

I tried the "ringtones" folder, tried the .nomedia file, and neither of those solutions really worked well.

I am not sure, they might have updated by now - you resurrected a 3+ month old thread. Since you did not add to the solutions and your only question is something not directly related to fixing the issue and could have been easily checked out on your own, I am not sure for your reason for resurrecting this thread. Now that it has been brought back how about you check out the stock app and report back?
I just make a playlist that does not include the ringtones.

Ringtones, notifications, alarms

I have a Nexus S running Android 2.3, but I don't understand why it is so difficult to place your ringtones, notifications, or alarm sounds so they are recognized in the sound settings. I have searched around and people are saying to put in media/audio/ringtones or alarms, etc, but it just doesn't work for me.
Where in the world are my ringtones and stuff suppose to go in? And is there a place where I can dump all those sounds in so I can use them as either ringtones, notifications, and alarms without having to make copies of them?
If this helps, you can put your sound files in any folder, use ringtone maker advanced from the market, then you can access all your sounds on your phone and then allocate your preferred sound for your requirement.
sent from my legend, currently using extream legend fuseā„¢
There's gotta be a way without having to download third party apps in order to get these custom sounds working. Why does google have to make it so unintuitive?

I said that already =.=
And is there a way to place only one copy of my sounds so that it is shared among ringtones, alarms, and notifications?
No there has to be a copy in each folder if you want to use it as ringtone, Alarm, notification sound.
the thing is you need to reboot the phone.
ones Android boots up the media scanner starts, if it doesn't your files won't show up.
if you use cyanogen you have an app called spareparts (it's in the market too)
with that you can manually start the media scanner.
if that does not work, this could be the possible problems :
1. file is corrupt. does it play in the music app? which filetype is it? mp3 and ogg should work without problems
2. typo in the folders
3. media scanner is disabled, any system tweaks installed? autostarts, frozen apps, uninstalled system apps?
4. your system is different and the files need to be placed somewhere else
