Hello guys, Michael here.
I have a pretty big problem, but I'm sure I'll be able to get some help here. I've searched a lot of various forums, but still, I wasn't able to fix it. Here it is:
Some time ago, I tried to flash a new rom with CWM recovery through install zip with sd card, and I got this text: "Can't mount SDcard", or smth like "can't read sdcard".
You can say I was a bit worried, since I do this very oftenly, and, like usually, I did a complete wipe, including system and stuff like that.
I started searching for a solution, and attempted various fixes, but none of them work. (Fixes like setting my sdcard from logical to primary, attempting to use some other cwm version etc.)
And then another problem appeared. I realized I'm not able to copy files from my pc to my sd card, a message appeared: "the disk is write protected". Again, I attempted many different fixes (removing read protection through regedit, through cmd, tried to format...) Again, sadly, nothing worked.
After a lot of tries to get something to work, it seemed I rendered the card completely unusable! I put it in another phone, and it said "card may be broken, attempt to format), and I wasn't even able to mount it anymore! Luckily, somehow, it got solved - I did this: I entered TWRP recovery and it, surprisingly, successfully formatted. Then I was able to mount it again, and I was even able to enter the option "install zip from SD card (from cwm)"!
But, the problem that's keeping me from installing another ROM remained, I'm still not able to copy any files from my PC to my SD card.
So now, I come here, with my final attempt to fix the problem, talking to you guys. I really think of this as the last resort, as I searched a lot of forums but wasn't able to find the answer. I apologize for the long text, but I hoped I explained clearly.
Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance!
Yours trully, Michael

I have CWM v5 newly installed. I immediately ran a backup with it and all went well. Now, a little later, I've been looking into CyanogenMod and wanted to tiny baby steps so I was nice and confident with things.
I tried to do another backup from CWM and it said it couldn't mount /sdcard. I tried to restore and the same error. Rebooted a few times and it's the same still.
I booted normally and checked with a standard file manager and /sdcard was fine. I haven't changed anything since the time it was working but I still seem to have broken things
What can I do?
EDIT: Actually, since getting CWM on the device, I have played a little with ADB commands and replaced the bootanimation.zip. Everything works when the phone is booted normally so that can't have caused it. Can it?
You really like new threads eh?
I presume you don't have a physical micro SD card, and you've changed kernels again at some point. Now the sdcard mentioned in newer CWM recovery is the external_sd, which you don't have. Use the internal SD card option.

I love them I do search before hand to see if there are similar threads relating to my device but because there aren't, I thought making a new thread per issue would be helpful. I can keep it all in this thread though if that's the etiquette around here though.
I used kTool to flash the zImage from the link you pointed out in my last thread, that gave me CF-Root v5 and CWM. I haven't changed anything since that point so if it worked once, I don't understand why it won't work again. You have confused me about the sdcard/external_sd. I have a card in the device, and everything normally saves to /sdcard but there's also /sdcard/external_sd which is always empty. I also see /sdcard/usbStorage where I have put some files too, but I don't really understand the naming conventions.
As I said, look for the "internal sd card" option in CWM recovery.
I'll add a bit more in the hope you don't need to keep posting.
If you don't have a physical micro SD card in your phone and you try to use any of the "install/backup/restore to/from sdcard" in newer versions of CWM recovery, it will give an error about being unable to mount /sdcard. Also, as far as I know, /sdcard/usbStorage refers to USB OTG, so unless you've got a USB OTG cable and a memory card/HDD plugged in, you shouldn't be writing files to that location.
Backed up successfully to internal sdcard, although I wasn't able to restore from it first which I don't understand because there should be the original one from earlier somewhere.
Turns out I was wrong, I don't appear to have a card in that SD slot even though I could swear there was one. And I can create files/folders in /sdcard/external_sd/ so I give up, lol.
EDIT: Nope, just the normal USB that came with the phone. I created the files/folders directly in the phone when I tested it.
Hi everyone!
I have (what I think is) a huge problem on my phone and after looking in tons of forums for solutions I found that the people here seem to really be able to help me.
I'm new to android phones... So please bare with me...
So I bought this phone in second hand from a friend who was in need of some cash for college (I don't really like to buy used stuff but...), and it came rooted with cyanogenMod7 but I was having trouble cause the phone wouldn't recognize my sd card and I couldn't connect it to my pc so I tryed to change it back to its original settings...
Its a vodafone 845 (huawei U8120)..
A friend of mine tried to help and we found this recovery menu (Clockwork recovery v3) and he chose some format options (format boot, system and data) and now the phone is useless! It still doesn't recognize my SD card or my pc, I can get into this recovery menu again but cant seem to fix the problem!
Other than that all the phone does is show the initial hourglass forever...
I would be so gratefull if someone could help! Thank you in advance!

Well you wiped the phone, so there's nothing to boot into.
You need to put a rom on the root of the SD card (not in any folders). Make sure the rom is made for your device. Boot into recovery and flash the rom, you should have a working phone after that.
Thank you for you help!
Now the only problem that stands is that the phone doesn't mount my sd card... Its an 8gb kingston, maybe I should get one with less capacity? The previous owner used a 4gb card and she said she never had any trouble regarding that...
Although the phone specifications on the net say it can handle cards up to 16gb :S
Have you tried mounting the SD card in clockwork mod as the usb disk drive?
Its found under mounts/storage.
sent from my legend, currently using extream legend fuseā¢
Ok guys, I've gotten as far as flashing the rom!!
Made huge progress in exchange for several hours of sleep xD
Now the only problem that stands is that when I choose the option "flash zip from sd card" I get this:
"E: No signature (242 files)
E: verification failed
Installation aborted"
And I'm lost again, yet soooo close to fixing my phone! :/

There should be an option somewhere to turn off signature verification. If you can find that option, toggle it off and try again.
You should try installing the original Firmware.Or Reinstall CM7
I got very similar problem. Have u tried to install different sd card. Maybe current one is broken like in my case?
Note: I do not have this device
See [GUIDE]All Huawei new&old phones-Install Stock Rom-Full Reset
Procedure:
1) Download stock ROM from HERE (im guessing you want Vodaphone UK)
2) Format your SD card to FAT32 (plug it into computer, right click on device, format, follow instructions)
3) Create the folder "dload" (without the quotes of course) on to the root (top level) of your SD card.
3) Extract the UPDATE.APP from the stock ROM and place it in "dload"
4) Power off your phone and put sd card in.
5) Power on by pressing POWER+RED_BUTTON+VOLUME_UP
If done correctly you will see a progress bar saying "UPDATING!"
Edit: this will reset the device to normal, however it will of course require a working SD Card. Try using a friends, try using your card in other devices (other phones, computers, etc).
To test SD Cards in your phone:
1) Insert Card
2) Boot into recovery
3) Go to Mounts & Storage menu
4) Plug device into computer
5) Choose "Mount sdcard over USB" (or similar)
6) If it shows up on the computer it is working, and you may as well use it to carry out the steps above
Note, if you are still checking for sdcard after resetting the phone, you will need to devise another method as the recovery will be replaced. For example use the storage menu in system settings, as this will show stats on the sdcard if it is readable.
My phone is working!
The problem with the SD card was that it was password protected, so I used another phone to disable the password, about the ROM, i just picked another one, I actually found it here on XDA! The celestial teapot, I really like it
Now all I want to know is if its possible to have multitouch on my phone?
And by the way, THANK YOU ALL for your help guys! You're awsome!

No problem, glad to help. Glad you got everything up and running too Multitouch is included in the kernel (at least on my device). If you can find a custom kernel for your phone, make sure it's compatible with your rom. I'm not familiar with your phone, so you'll need to do some checking on kernels. I'm not sure if multitouch is also a hardware limitation or not, so if you don't have multitouch at all it may not be possible. Kernels determine the number of touch points on my phone, if you don't have it at all then it may not be possible or there may be another mod for it.
If you can flash a custom kernel to achieve this, remember to do a nandroid backup first. Always do a backup when flashing anything. If they start to take up too much space, delete the old ones and just keep the most recent. Also remember to only wipe dalvik and cache when flashing a kernel.
Again, since I'm not familiar with your phone you'll need to do some research on these things first. The best thing you can do is read, read, and read some more. If you get stuck again, the good people here will always be able to help you out.
Sorry, I know there's a million threads on xda for people requesting help so I hope someone can help me.
I don't know why but my phone won't mount it's storage. When I try to flash a .zip through CWM, the phone just states it can't mount /sdcard/. When I power the phone on, and I plug it into my PC, the PC says it doesn't recognize the device. Trying to boot the phone into RSD mode makes it semi-recognizable, but is only recognized as a composite device, and I am nervous about flashing back to stock. I haven't tried fastboot and the only time I mess with it is to unlock my photon again.
If anyone has some sage advice, I would be more than grateful for it. Thank you!
What rom are you running? and were you able to mount before a possible flash or update? need more info first before assistance can be given
Oh sorry, I forgot! I'm Running MIUI build MIUI.us_sunfire_v4_2.3.30. and I was able to mount without any incident at all. In fact, I didn't even notice it until just recently, because post-flash of MIUI I was still able to use my usb storage without a hitch. And I was able to flash before.
ok so are you referring to the internal sd/external/both? if external try testing the card in a stand alone reader to see if it could possibly be corrupt
The SD card is definitely okay, and I experience the issue with the SD card in the phone and out. In fact, I don't usually have one in my Photon because of the internal storage.
so external sd then? are you able to see the internal sd? if so try flashing a nandroid back up through the internal and see if you regain connectivity
Hey, I hadn't, unfortunately, had more time to troubleshoot my phone. But I basically was unable to restore from a backup because it was saying /sdcard directory does not exist. I was, strangely enough, able to reinstall the drivers from my PC and RSD back to stock 198_6. However, I still get an error message that my device has malfunctioned when I plug into PC, and just to test, trying to do an "apply update.zip via sd card" in the stock recovery 3e just gives me the same message.../sdcard directory does not exist.

Sorry if this is too obvious a question but does the /sdcard directory exist? Can you navigate to it with a file explorer and open it? Does it look like the structure is intact?

Ah, as strangely enough, I can. I can even navigate to /mnt/sdcard and /mnt/sdcard-ext. So there's a /sdcard directory and the previous two. in the /mnt directory there are /usbdisk1.0-7 files as well. Not sure if that helps, though...
Woo! Information bump! So I've been fiddling with my photon and from what I can tell, I get the same issue on 3 PCs(2 at home and 1 at work) where windows states the device has malfunctioned. I don't think it's a driver issue because it's happened multiple times on different PCs, and I know one of them definitely works.. I can definitely navigate to the /sdcard but my PC and phone recovery won't find it. Is there a way I can force the phone to mount it via fastboot? I will literally do ANYTHING to get my phone's internal storage to be read and any help would be mega appreciated!
Weren't people having issues when downgrading from a 198_7 base rom to stock 198_6. You have done a lot of fiddling around that you may have done something by accident and not have even noticed. Btw I believe anything ics based has to have 198_7 as the phones primary. Could be wrong.
That could have been the start of your problem from the beginning
just want to throw in my two cents. when I was haveing a problem with usb I couldnt mount it in cwm. Once i switched to twrp recovery i was able to mount just fine.
To everyone in this thread, THANK YOU! You guys are what make the xda community awesome. And apparently, I got it all figured out. Not sure what I did, but now the computer is recognizing the phone and so are all my other computers.
Still eternally grateful, though, to everyone in this thread.
I am having an issue creating backups. Last time I had issues with what seemed like the sd card, I bought a new 64 gig card and replaced my old one.
The old one still works fine with an adapter into my pc, but I wrote it off and sucked it up.
I just tried again making a backup in TWRP with an error, "unable to create backup folder". So, I switched over to CWM and tried the backup. Same issue.
I just checked with my phone plugged into my pc and the file system is defined as "Generic Hierarchal" which I've never seen before. I am almost positive I formatted it initially as either fat or ex fat. With the phone on, I have no issues with the card. I have music and other data on it and it reads just fine.
Other possibly relevant history:
previous rom was Beans 21 and was unable to update to 22 (do not remember the error)
wiped and loaded Alliance's latest V8 with no issues. Been running Alliance for a few weeks now with zero issues. (other than backup)
Do I need to wipe my card and format it in the phone? I think previously I formatted it in my win 7 pc with an adapter.
TIA for any info
Formatting the card with TWRP is probably better
I had this issue with an S3 and nothing would work. I tried mounting/remounting, formatting, and even a new SD card. It finally worked with a new SD, which is really weird because it was an old SD card compared to one of the newer ones.
Thanks for the response. I have 2 cards. Just cleaned off one and formatted in the phone. Still fails trying to do a backup. I hate the thought of buying a third 64 gig card.
I think I'll try going back to stock and see what happens. It'll be a while before I can. Sucks I can't backup first.
Thanks again for the response
interesting update, for anyone that might be watching this post: I d'loaded skips updated toolkit from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2052788&page=10
and was able to make a backup.
just FYI
Bought a Sammy 64 and same issue. Unless anyone has any other suggestions, I'm going to Odin back to stock, I guess.
back to stock, unlock, root fixed it. just fyi.

Not. Tried to load another rom and can't read from ad card. Damnit. Any help would be appreciated.
more drama...I re-loaded twrp, b/c I found an old post with roughly the same issue. It said to use cwm to fix permissions. Well, cwm doesn't offer that anymore, the comment is that it was placebo effect. twrp still does offer it. I ran it and then rebooted to android, then rebooted into twrp reco again and was able to load Alliance v8 again.
so, until 4.4 roms appear (which I will have to go back to cwm for, unless twrp gets updated) I guess I'm set.
I'd still LOVE to hear from someone who might know how this happened or what exactly happened, to know what to avoid.
Thanks again, to the one person that responded.
Back to square 1, cannot make nandroid backups.
In CWM v6.0.4.3 here's the errors:
trying to backup: Can't mount Backup Path
trying to mount external_sd: Error Mounting /external_sd
In TWRP v2.6.3.0 here's the errors:
trying to backup: backup folder: /external_sdcard/TWRP/Backups/
E:unable to create folder: /exterenal_sdcard/TWRP
E:Failed to make backup folder
Any thoughts? I know I've posted this multiple times, but not sure where to turn. I suspect if I go back to unrooted stock again and unlock / re-root, load twrp and fix permissions, it will work again for a while. But not permanently. I really want to fix this once and for all. But am not getting any clear direction to go. I have searched on and off XDA to no avail. hoping this time is the key. Thanks for reading and potentially helping.
Hello
I have a trouble with my Huawei b199 devise. I have downloaded an official update (emui. com/plugin.php?id=hwdownload&mod=detail&mid=4) and flashed it with "three button".
By the end of flashing it wrote that image is larger than storage (it isn't actually so) and error message. Yet, the update was installed but my phone doesn't seem SD cards now. Neither internal nor external. I think it could be a reason of "too small storage" message. When i tried re-flash, i've seen:
"check sd update pkg is exist...
warning :internal card error !
make sure you usb cable has been inserted!
usb update starting ..."
I have no idea what to do because HI-suite on my desktop doesn't see my phone too. Reset the settings doesn't help.
My phone is too rare so i haven't found custom recovery for it.
I know that i am at list not only one with the same problem because there is a similar topic on Chinese forum.
fp.huafans. cn/thread-1157621-1-1.html
Well, i don't speak Chinese and google translate helped me just a bit.
Does somebody know what to do in this situation? The phone without storage is unusable.
Thank you!
The problem was solved by placing older update on external SD (inserted into another phone) and flashing by three button.
