[Q] Streaming from Media Server - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else having problems streaming media server content (Plex, Serviio, etc.) to their N9? Videos are choppy or just won't display. I'm using BubbleUPnP and have tried various players - VLC, QuickPic, etc. I can view the same videos when they're on the device's internal SD.
DLNA streaming works fine using my LG G3 (KitKat) as well as my Windows 8.1 laptop. Not sure if this is a Lollipop issue.

I have had success streaming movies and video thru jriver gizmo from jriver media server on my pc to the n9 but have not yet got gizmo to play audio - which is what I intend to use it for most...

I use MX Player. You can get the lollipop version here: https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/translation/test-build

Upgrade to LRX21Q. I found LRX21L pretty laggish on several applications aswell.
You can find a guide in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-9/help/factory-image-flash-t2929019

No problem playing streamed video or audio from Plex server (Ubuntu 12.04).
Accessing fast to my Owncloud server via web interface and/or remote webdav mounted filesystem with Es File Explorer.
Reading OK with BS Player, VLC, ES player...
Did you check your wireless speed and the N9 free memory/high CPU usage ? (Chrome seems to be a problem)

I upgraded to LRX21R, but that doesn't fix the problem.
I put lollipop on my LG G3, and DLNA streaming still plays on that device just fine. No CPU/memory issues on my N9. Netflix and YouTube work w/o this problem, so I'm stumped. ?
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk

I've been streaming from my networked hard drive with BS Player. Nice and smooth.
Your issue may be related to your wireless router and/or the type of streaming you're using.

Still stumped by this. Wireless speed is fine, comparable to other devices that don't have this issue, including my G3 w/Lollipop. Internet streaming seems to be fine.
Edit: Tried Plex on my PC. No change. ?
Any other suggestions? Thanks.
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk

My solution was to dump plex all together. I now watch movies and shows using showbox, and screen mirror using a chromecast. For all other videos I upload to google drive and play them from there.

If you want to stream media files like AVI, MKV, ... I found that the best solution is to use the default Windows file shares (SMB), a file manager like ES or FX and VLC as media player. You connect to your shared folder in your file manager app, browse to the media file and open it. The file manager sets up the streaming in the background and VLC plays it.
Works flawlessly at home in your WLAN and no complicated setup is required.
(I regularly watch 720p and 1080p content with this method)

Thanks for the replies. DLNA/UPnP has worked fairly seamlessly for me with several devices in the past, and still does. I think this is an N9 issue, and I prefer to stick with a platform-independent solution.
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk

I'm using "PS3 media server" + BubbleUpnp + MxPlayerPro with custom códecs for the audio limitations introduced in the last update. No problem at all with the streams, no stuttering etc. Maybe it is a buffering issue on the renderer (video player) you are using.

Problem solved. I returned the N9, lol.

Streaming media - what's the best way??

I would like to share video from my computer / sgs2 on the tab. I cannot find a way to launch allshare although the internet suggests this should be possible. Sending files via Bluetooth doesn't seem to work, either and the 2 devices have a lot of problems finding each other. What is the best way to play video stored on my phone wirelessly on the tab?

I'm using a TVersity Media Server on my desktop and Skifta on my tablet to stream music and video (using Dice Player). Works very well, at least for my 720p tv series.
I use TVersity straight to my tab's browser.
+1 for Tversity, and i use UpnPlay for the viwer
since plex is not working anymore i now use emit.... works great for me
i want to test this option also in the future:
Code:
I'm using a TVersity Media Server on my desktop and Skifta on my tablet to stream music and video (using Dice Player)
i also tried to connect via a file explorer, but could not setup a connection because i dont have/want a password on my windows 7 account(s)

Streaming video from PC to TFP

I'm really struggling to get all my videos to stream and am looking for solutions. So far I've had the best luck with My Net and ES with Mobo but I still get several files that wont play audio at all or just loud static. Any ideas without having to convert all my files? Is there a clear list of audio and videos codecs that the TFP will play. I dug around for a bit but didnt find a definitive list.
Thanks!

Nothing beats PlayOn.
I have had great success with ES and MX Player but I haven't tried a lot of file types.
BSPlayer and Dice player WILL play anything you throw at them .. and they both have a Lan function to locate files on network shares without needing a seperate app.
I use Dice player and find it works like a charm. You can access a share directly from the app as mention by dannyb.
If you have dlna then try an app called UPNPLAY in combination with Dice player.... this is what I use to stream from my netgear nas.
With mx player you need to change to software encoding sometimes to get sound. Maybe the same with whatever you are using.

+1 on the BSPlayer. My NAS was really flaky on the DLNA and I wanted to play MKV files. BSPlayer worked a charm on SMB shares without add on software
PLEX! Run the server on your PC, load the app on any android device and stream. The nice thing about PLEX is that it uses your PC to decode, then streams to the device. This eliminates codec issues, and allows you to stream any file type to any device that supports the PLEX app. It also allows remote mobile connections, and is the best I've found, even on 3G. It also will work as a DLNA server, if you choose to bypass the PLEX app, although then decoding is done locally on the device.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I've tried each but none work flawlessly. Either stuttering, low frame rates, bad compression, taskbar doesnt hide etc. I've used speed test and wifi analyzer and dont seem to have any issues there. I went and picked up a new ipad just to check it out (dont plan to keep it, really dont understand using a tablet and having to hold it all the time) and the boxee app is phenomenal. I saw they were hiring a lead android app developer so hopefully we'll see something soon but I'm not holding my breath. I'll keep digging and see what I can find.

Easy..... I stream videos from my PC to tablet daily. Get TVersity on your Desktop (it's free) and then download Skifta & MX Video on the prime, bothe are free too.
Depending on your router you may need to change port or QoS settings. but it works flawless, my gf even watches vids on her iPad2 while I'm on my prime.
Streaming may lag or fail if your router is crap or desktop is too slow....

Streaming Video from PC

Doors anyone have a recommendation for an app to stream video from a (Windows 7) PC?
Sent from my NookTablet using Tapatalk
ES File Explorer works well.
In the top left hand corner you can change the Local option to LAN.
Select add new (2nd from right).
Select scan - the network address should show up. If not you will need to play around with network folders and sharing options from your windows machine.
When does show, select file you want and select option to play (I use MX player).
Enjoy
I had no idea. Thanks for the tip ... I will try it out.

More streaming
I use a original Dream Multi Media dreambox DM8000 sat receiver with two feed inputs. My wife can watch her channel and I was watching yesterday for example a soccer match on the Nook NT, still seating in the same room. I use the MX videoplayer which is working perfect on standard resolution stations. On HD stations (which is really not needed on the Nook) I get sometimes shutdowns. Even it is possible to stream a movie from the hdd of the receiver or from the NAS.
Is there any possibility to make also records on the SDHC card on the Nook?

Upnp/dlna Android app capable of streaming mkv

Hi all, would of put this in android general but can't seem to see it :-\
Anyway, I'm looking for the above, a uonp/dlna compatible app that is capable of streaming mkvs to a ps3.i can play them on my phone via mx player and the like but when it comes to streaming it fails, unsupported or corrupted data shows in the ps3 whenni know for a fact it can stream Mkvs. I have tried airsyncs airplay option, skifta and joses media server and none seem to work, anyone any ideas or other options I can try?
I'm running ParanoidAndroid and Siyah/twrp if that's any help.
Thanks in advance

hey had this problem a while back, after a lot of experimenting with different apps, it turns out none of the apps could successfully "beam" a mkv file, even if both the phone and xbox can support the file.
The workaround that i finally got to was to host a media server from the phone, and access the mkv file via the server. APP: Pixel-DMS.
Works great on my xbox !! should work on the ps3 as well
BubbleUPnP might.

Im looking for something that works the opposite actually, Does anyone know of an app that will allow streaming from a pc to my galaxys3?
I used to use allshare when i was running official samsung rom, but now i use Paranoid android and unfortunately cannot use it anymore.
I use a program called ps3 media server, which allows any content even MKV files to be streamed, ps3 media server is veiwable on ps3, xbox 360 and i could see it and use it on allshare.
now all i need is an app to allow me to pick up this media server on my paranoid setup.
any suggestions? thanks. :fingers-crossed:
I use PS3MediaServer in conjunction with Serviio to steam to my Xbox and phone.
1. Download PS3MS and Serviio on PC
2. Stream to gaming console. For streaming to android, download Skifta or ServiGo on Play. You can manage your Serviio console from your droid using ServiiDroid.
MKV works flawlessly.

My home environment is:
Laptop - with Windows Media Player and Foobar2000 as servers
Tablet (galaxy tab) - with ArkMC as controller, server and player.
Samsung TV (as player and renderer)
I had an issue - I was not able to "Play-to" and to share MKV files!
I have tried just siple renaming MKV to AVI, after this trick it was possible to use "Play-to" to send file to my TV. And it played back well.
Maybe this would work for you.

ArkMC can use 3rd party players. I use Mobo Player and MX Player. So it supports MKV formats to. And ArkMC server can share MKV files to.

No, it can´t. It can play avi but not mkv, 3gp or flv.
I am still lookin for solution to stream mkv files via Android to PS3.
I installed Bubble UPnP - PS3 can see it, but everytime I want to go to some videos, pictures or music, PS3 is giving 2101 DLNA Error (can´t even see the list of my multimedia)
PS3 is on the newest offcial ROM and router is D´Link Dir-600 - if that´s matter.
Any ideas?

PS3 is not able to play MKV natively without transcoding. You must use a transcoding server like PS3 Media Server, Serviio, etc.
Odp: Upnp/dlna Android app capable of streaming mkv
Yes i know, i am using media serwer on my laptop and i stream mkv files, however when i stream movies, my laptop is over heating and shut down (is hot as hell) after an hour or so. Laptop is dual core 1.6 and the thermal paste on cpu is probably out. So i wanted to stream those movies via note 2. I thought there was an application with internal transcoding possibility like it's in media share on pc. So is it possible or not?
Sent with GT-N7100 via Tapatalk 2
Did anyone have a fix for this? The Note 2 ought to be able to do this.
Wondering if anyone found a way to transcode mkvs from a phone to be played on a ps3.
I'm yet to find one to be honest, I think plex did work but no longer seems to for whatever reason

I am using ArkMC. too. What I really like is that it supports many formats of video files.
Also the feature that I use the most is YouTube integration. You can use your phone as a controller and watch videos on a big screen:good:
I have bubble full version I downloaded arkmc which ultimately uses bubble what my question is how to view streaming videos on the P's3 because it recognizes bubble as a media server and only allows me to browse to my files rather then stream them

FYI: upnp client and video player that just work

Hi all,
I use ps3mediaserver as upnp/dlna server in my computer. Before the Nexus 10, I had a Galaxy Tab 10.1 which browsed and played the video files nicely with Samsung AllShare app.
Now, with the Nexus 10 I have been experimenting with several combinations of upnp clients and video players. The only player that I have found to work smoothly with the streamed files is Dice Player. I have tried other players (MX Player also) with a lot of problems: video doesn't play, no sound, long pauses...
Also, the best client for me is MediaHouse with a simple and clean interface, just browse and select to play.
Thanks
jordicm,
I have also experimented with various players and between Dice and MXPlayer, Dice is the winner for streamed content. I use MXPlayer Pro video playback for SAMBA shares as I like the MXPlayer UI better than Dice's.
Personally I was surprised that a free app like Dice was superior to MXPlayer Pro in this one feature of video playback that MXPlayer obviously supports. I would prefer to use only one video play.
It seems on Android, in the categories of Video players, Web browsers and media aggrigators you need a mixture of apps to get all that one wants (speed, reliability, features, quality of UI).
Mediahouse and Diceplayer. No better combination in my opinion.
Mediahouse and bsplayer here!
