[Q] Tab 4 pairing with gear S? - Samsung Gear S

Has anyone managed to connect a Tab 4 (7 inch, if it makes a difference) with the Gear S? Would it need to be the LTE version?
I am getting sick of my Note2, so this could free me up for a different cell brand.
Thanks!

I've been trying

I want to know this too. I have tried on mine and it doesn't see the device. The bluetooth screen does but when you click on it, it says it is not a supported device.
I've also altered the build.prop file but still no joy.
I read that a guy got it to work on a Tab S LTE, which would indicate it may only be the LTE versions of the tablets that work. If not, I don't see why the Tab S would work.
I have e-mailed Samsing support and also posted a message on their support site, although I reckon I'll get a stock reply of "It is only supported on the following Samsung phones......".

Per their own How To guide, it is supposed to work with tablets. What I don't understand is why they won't list which tablets are compatible. It's the most basic info a manufacturer should provide.
Let me know if they answer you. I'll contact them as well and ask for a full compatibility list, since there are even a bunch of cheap Galaxy phones that may not work with it, meaning, KK+"Galaxy" in the device name is not enough of an inidicator.

On FB, someone from Samsung Support states that all Samsung devices with android 4.3 and above are compatible.
You may want answer them there and get to the bottom of this.

Got it working!!!
Right, after fiddling about and thanks to user bqwd36 who posted instructions for the Tab S in Chinese which I translated and just took a bit of, my Gear S is now working with my Tab 4 7.0 (T230). This may also work for any other Samsung tablet that can run Gear Manager.
Right, here's what you need to do which basically involves changing the build.prop file, so you may have to root your tablet to do it (there is a guide on the XDA Tab 4 forum - go with the TWRP method as it worked first time).
1) Install an older version of Gear Manager, I used version 2.0.14040401.
https://www.mediafire.com/folder/e7h23e12rzesi/Gear_Manager#e7h23e12rzesi
2) Make sure you have enabled bluetooth on your Gear S and that you have ticked so it can be seen by other devices (you may not need to do this if yours is not activated yet).
3) Open the Gear Manager app and scan, you should see the Gear S appear in the list. DON'T click on it as you don't want to do anything with the Gear S yet.
4) You now need to edit the build.prop file (I recommend using ES File Explorer). In build.prop change the following entries so they are:
ro.product.model=SM-N900
ro.build.characteristics=phone
5) Now reboot your Tab 4.
6) Open the Gear Manager app and check it can still see your Gear S (you may need to turn on bluetooth again so it is visible if you already have an active Gear S).
7) Now open Galaxy Apps and install the latest version of Gear Manager.
8) Open the Gear Manager app and the Gear will still be seen.
9) Now go ahead an click on the entry and setup your phone (it will wipe your Gear S).
Everything works as it does if it was being done on a phone. The only thing you need to remember is that as the tablet does not have a phone app, it means that the Gear S cannot make or receive calls when you have it connected via bluetooth to the tablet. Once you turn off bluetooth on the tablet the Gear S will automatically change itself so it can do calls.
You can now change the build.prop back to it's original settings if you want as the Gear Manager will continue to work with the Gear S.
The other thing is that the Remote Connection (where you can get notifications like e-mail from your tablet over the internet) worked the first time. When I changed the build.prop back to it's original settings it wouldn't do it, and hasn't since I then went and changed the settings back to the ones above. I just need to have another play.

It worked with my 12.2 note pro thank you only thing is when I pair it to a new device or rests the gear s

This is typical gear behavior when switching phones. It stupid, but that's how it's worked since gear 1.

Tab 4 pairing with Gear S
I also have a new Tab 4 (the NOOK edition) , you have made a great discovery making the Gear app work with the 'S", i am not familar enough with the procedure with editing the files mentioned,
is there a tutotrial for doing this, i am trying to learn more about it, thanks for your posts.

Could someone explain what the purpose of pairing the Gear S with the phone or tablet is?
I was talking to a Samsung rep at Best Buy tonight and he indicated that you could pair with a tab 4 that was NOT a phone and did NOT have a data plan (ie wifi only tablet). What I don't understand is how the Gear S becomes "activated" to send and receive calls if it is not being paired with a device that has a sim, a phone number and IS able to make calls. I have an iPhone 5S and it seems there are some things going on to make forwarding of calls from an existing phone to the Gear S possible. I've read other threads that it is possible to pair with a non-samsung device and you'd think they would make it easy to do this to sell more Gear Ss. Thanks in advance for explanation.

The purpose is so you can install apps and forward notifications. My Gear S has a SIM card and its own phone number anyway, and yeah, call forwarding would not work.

Watch the you tube video on "how to pair gear s with any phone" it will have you reset the phone then go through a series of taps on the screen. After that you will be able to pair your gear s to your tab 4 (or any phone/tablet).

pardon the necropost
you need to set your root folder to rw from ro

No intention for any duplication and absolutely no plagiarism, authorship is legitimate.
1. Tab S or Tab 4 must be rooted (you should head over to the forum where one of our spectacular devs would have done a write up on it)
2. Obtain Android a build.prop editor or in my case, I use Android Tuner (Free Version: http://www.3c71.com/atfree - Pro Version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.at&hl=en)
3. Using the above applications, use the menu/tool to edit the build.prop. I this instance, I am unsing Android Tuner, so I will go over to the first page to select "Build.prop editor", select it by tapping on the button. First things first, click the backup button to save your existing build.prop file. Don't ever progress into modifications, without having a backup or recovery method. Once you have completed all of the above, here are the edits you need to make in the edit by simply click on the pen (blue/white icon) for each key).
Please note, I am having my Tab S indicate its the SM-N900P (Sprint Variant of Note 3), however, you can choose any other smartphone of you liking, once you know the details of the keys indicated below).
key: ro.build.characteristics
value: phone
key: ro.build.product
value: hlte
key: ro.product.device
value: hlte
key: ro.product.model
value: SM-N900P
4. Once you have completed edits for the aforementioned keys, verify your changes, then save your build.prop with your editor or in the case of Android Tuner, you're all good and just need to reboot your device.
5. Once your device completes the reboot and you're back on the Android platform, clear the data for your Galaxy Apps, before proceeding to the store. Once cleared, you will be able to download Gear Manager, Gear Fit or other application may not ordinarily have on a tablet.
6. Go over to your Bluetooth, add a new device (your gear should be reset to factory settings in order to pair with another device, so you will need to complete this step if you want to proceed with pairing the Gear S with the Tab S or Tab 4 and probably any other tablet device.
7. Follow the normal pairing settings and everything will go accordingly, gear manager will launch, the device will pair with the Gear S and continue to installing all prerequisite apps).
8. You have completed the pairing of your Gear S with your Tab S or Tab 4.
Feel free to reach out for assistance if you are having difficulty with any of the steps above and always remember, before proceeding, backup your devices.
Troubleshooting
If you realize any issues with launching settings on your Tab S or Tab 4 after making the aforementioned changes in the build.prop file, revert to the following and save.
key: ro.build.characteristics
value: tablet
Reboot and everything should be back to normal, without the loss of functionality.

Thx, worked like a charm on my 8" Tab4 (sm335). Pairing over bt with iPhone6+ is also confirmed (after removing a directory on gearS).
In that case, the Tab4 is still 'remote connected' (i.e. updates and s-voice continues to work) while the Gear-S plays nice as well with my iPhone.
Note ... i have the Gear-S modified with the StarTrek theme and iOS8 icons.
The Gear-S can work on its own, with the tab4 for management, and with iphone for call-forward/ bt connect.

dear snpg pls help me !!!
follow your guide and root my tab4 10"!
after root with buid.prop edit items you that you said !
key: ro.build.characteristics
value: phone
key: ro.product.model
value: SM-N900
but after root in last level i recived this pop up :
unfortunately com.android.systemui has stopped
at last i flash my tab4 for resolve it !
pls help for pairing my gear s to tab4!
thank so much!!

Worked for me! You are a ****ing genius, I just have one note! I kept my buildprop the same because I didn't want to mess with it. My question to you is, did you get any addition applications to install because I could not successfully complete that task. -AP

Best app to recover a stolen galaxy tab 10.1 with only wifi?

Hello, i am starting to become paranoid about going outside with my galaxy tab because i am afraid it might get stolen. I am looking for a good app to let me track any possible thieves like the ones ive seen many times for pc, that let you get the almost exact location where the lost item (phone, pc etc) is and automatically take pictures and screen captures.
The ome iwanted to try is Prey (because it a chilean software, hehe) but for android devices it only tracks the position, but nothing else, and i think it is kind of usseles as yiu dont get a 100% accurate position and it is usseles if the adress you get is a building with 100+ people living in it.
Also another issue with prey and othe simmilar software is the they only work on android cellphones where you have to send a text message to activate the tracking mode, but i cannot do that in a wifi inly galaxy tab.
So, do you guys have any recommendation for a nice software? I am lookin for so ething simple that runs in the background and doesnt disturb me. (and of course.... Free)
Thanks in advance
Samsung actually have features built into the gal tab 10.1 for this.
Go to samsungdive.com. If you are signed into your samsung account on your tab, then you can start using it straight away i think.
In terms of other software, androidlost has heaps of features for free. It doesn't rely on text messaging. The design is pretty terrible, but hey, its free.
Lookout has a product called plan b. It always you to install the app remotely and tell you where it's at. But needs an Internet connection.
I don't think its honeycomb compatible but its one to watch out for.

Another option is Norton mobile security for android. This one I have tried and it works on my Samsung galaxy tab.
http://tabletsforme.com/norton-releases-antivirus-for-android-phones/
I also have the Samsung configured on my tab. Yeah lots of overkill

Did you managed to get it working for Wifi version? It does not work for me.
thanks for all the info. I tried the samsung thing, but it didnt work .
Lookout seemed like a good alternative but it is not supported on tablets.....
I also gave a look at some of this applications (http://lifehacker.com/5832947/five-best-phone-recovery-tools) but they are all phone-related.
Guess we just have to wait a little more for some apps to be released for wifi-only devices............
I have used both androidlost and seekdroid on my galaxy tab 10.1
So there are apps that work on tablets
I like prey
http://preyproject.com/
Very cool, and it's free. It can take snapshots from the camera, use closest wifi spot to send ip address and info, you can sound an alarm or lock the device out. There are a lot of options. It allows 3 devices for the free version.
yeah, i also like prey, but it doesnt work with the wifi only tab as it requires and SMS to be sent to the device for activation

It does work. You first have to add your samsung account on the tab. under settings then accounts/sync, add account, then click samsung account. Its the only way samsung knows you actually have a samsung device. Btw it works pretty good. Best of all, its free,
Tab left on plane
Hi, so what would you recommend to find one left on plane, with sim card but in airplane mode, wait and see if someone gets through the security to see where it is or is there a way of forcing the tab to turn itself on?
thanks in advance

I tinkered with Cerebus on my Tab, seems to work just fine (wifi only). I've been using this on my Android phone. Can attach up to 5 devices.

As long as there is battery, you can track your device's location, log app activity, send a message/VERY audible alarm to the device, take a screenshot, take a picture with front or back camera, a few other options. Obviously, app needs to be loaded on the device BEFORE you lose it.
Works great!
great, i will check it immediately. Thanks!
i just checked it, it looks very good. Saddly its not free, but it is extremely cheap, so i think i will buy it once i get home. thanks again.
AndroidLost is a great app and works perfectly with GalaxyTab 10.1
register your device with your samsung account and use samsungdive.com
works great for sgs, sgs2 and sgt7500
I was using Prey on my laptop and all phones

[Q] Endomondo and gear fit

Hi,i just bought this gear fit,it helps me keeping track on my daily activities (on the watch) and stuff like that but i hate that s-health or samsungs fitness app doesn't work on other devices (i have an LG G Flex). Then i found out about endomondo that they support the gear fit so i downloaded the app. After i installed it a new icon on the watch appeared called app connect and endomondo appears there, but when i press it on the phone i get the message Not a Samsung Device or something like that. Has anyone tried this app and can confirm that works with gear fit? Or is it because i have an LG G Flex?
Or does anybody knows any other apps that can make a graph for your activities and can connect to the gear fit?
Thank you.
Endomondo works great with the gear fit. I think Strava used to support it but now does not. I do not have a supported Samsung device but I do have a Samsung phone and I had to change the build.prop file to get it working. I suspect you would have to do the same as in the link below. It may make any LG links unstable however. Copy original build.prop to your PC and if your phone hangs, after modding the file, then push it back using ADB. Good luck.

It works with my ANT+ Garmin Heart rate monitor. It has 3 displays you can customize. See pic.
Hey
Is it possible to use gear fit as instant heart monitor.
To enable working in aerobic area for example.
That means, that gear fit alarms when you are under or above aerobic state, (eg. under 120 hb/s and above 150 hb/s).
Thanx for any kind of help or suggestion.
If you set the Gear fit to track Exercise>Walking or Running, it will show a constant pulse rate but I see no where, app or other that will set HR alarm zones without using HRM, phone and app.

Developing apps for Gear Fit 2?

Yes you can. Just need to sign up through the Samsung Tizen developer site and then build the apps/watches faces to the store.

space below music player on gear fit 2 drop down menu
The Gear Fit 2 drop down menu has an empty rectangle below where it says music player. I wish this could be assignable or at least let you tap home. In order to go home in a lot of cases you have to hit the home button. I wish you could swipe and tap your way through on the screen itself.

There's no support from the Tizen Studio (installed latest version 1.1.0). So, there's no template, you'll have to start from scratch. There's also no Emulator template either. There's great examples included, incl. native app which shows how access sensors (runs great in the emulator). The Fit2 is fully Tizen RTOS compatible. I tried to use one of the S2 examples to make it Fit2 compatible. Not luck, W/o a working template and a working emulator I give up...
So at this moment we can't really develop apps unless we know how to make it from scratch? No help for amateurs?

Correct, Samsung policy, buy at your own risk...
The screen res is 216x432. I made layout pics to use with the emulator. The db-file is the button assignment file. But haven't figured out yet, how everything works together.

Such a shame. It has lot of potential. Decent hardware and software that offers a lot as well. Could you please let me/us know if you figure something out? If Samsung doesn't want to help me use my watch to its full potential, I would happily spend my time doing that myself.

Success, partially...
I got an emulator working, BUT the screen settings are not ok, screen elements are being cut off, have to investigate...
Somebody interested helping me?
Emulator running: http://imgur.com/Uzdk0zB
Settings cut-off: http://imgur.com/nYeKZLi
Settings itself ok: http://imgur.com/pBaPrEk
Power Off ok too: http://imgur.com/Ir0p5sd
Both buttons (back and Home) are working.
If I find a way to make the emulator robust, no screen cut-off I can transfer sample apps from Gear S2 to Fit2. That's the first steps of developing own apps for this thing.

This looks promising. I would gladly help but I don't think that I would be of any use with my lack of skills.
I have Neonto studio installed which looks like an easy way of creating apps but I could not figure out how to get the app on my watch. Probably because there is no emulator for it in Tizen Studio.

You need the Tizen Studio to get apps onto the watch. In developer mode.
There's no template for this watch for Tizen Studio, so the interfaces are not declared (API to sensors), the screen resolution is not set (see my cut-off settings screen) and the GUI elements are not defined (swipe, L/R. D/U, no ring like Gear S2). I doubt that there'll be apps for this watch until some skilled person adds this to the SDK...
if somebody is interested I can send them what i did so far, it'll save some time in doing the emulator templates.

Three questions/requests:
1. What SDK did you use for Gear Fit 2? Wearable 2.3 or 2.3.1 or is there one for Gear Fit 2?
2. Are you able to push your app/project into your Gear Fit 2 via debug mode or something?
3. Would you be able to share your sample project that is tested to work on Gear Fit 2?
Best regards!

Hi only started to experiment today with my new fit 2. And got a hello tizen app on the fit 2. I was only following the samsung step by step guide.
1.) Used 2.3.2
2.) Yes, debug mode is working
Now i need to investigate how to build a minimal ui. I want to build a small app, that unlocks my smart door lock.
1.) enable wifi
2.) wait until connected to my router
3.) get thet state of the lock
4.) send the unlock command
5.) close app and disable wifi
So i'm able to go running without any additional key or phone.

Thanks for responding, so how did you get 2.3.2? It is not showing up under Tizen Update Manager?

Hmmm I am running mine on Windows, that might be the reason.
I think I know the reason now, I downloaded the Tizen SDK 2.4 not the Tizen Studio 1.1.1 so now I have the 2.3.2 option. =D

Nice. That's exactly what I would like to use my watch for. I don't have a smart door lock but I'm planning on getting one in the future. Right now I wish I was able to make an app for MacID or a simple shopping list/reminder app
Great idea - I am starting research to try something similar

If you make any progress, I'd be keen to hear, and I'm happy to share what I get done too.
I will probably look at it sometime over the next month when I have time as I am a complete noob to Tizen.
I never thought to have the watch directly open the door (but now I am going to copy that idea - thanks), originally I just wanted to have the watch trigger phone to open door (to avoid getting phone out to open door) I previously had tasker detecting the phone shaking trigger my door unlock, but It would be much neater to get the watch to do that instead.
Door unlock is simple https request with authentication token.

Gear Fit 2 will not connect to Gear App

Hi everyone, I was super excited to try out my new Gear Fit 2 (ordered from Best Buy in the US), but heartbreakingly it will not actually connect to my phone. I am on a Galaxy S 6 running the original OS, but the tricky part is that it is from a Japanese provider (DoCoMo). It did not occur to me that the Gear Fit 2 would not work with this phone, but it will not sync with the required Samsung Gear App. The app downloads (I don't know if it matters but I retained the US version of the app store so I could keep my puzzle and dragons profile). The phone can see the watch, and they do the fun Bluetooth pin exchange, but then the app throws an error message that says "Check if your device is compatible and if the app needs to be updated" and then the process won't proceed any further. I have factory reset my phone, uninstalled my old Gear Fit and old Gear Fit manager app, reset the watch, all to no avail. I contacted Samsung customer support and they told me that since I am on a Japanese S6 they can't help me because they are US customer support, instead providing me with a useless link to the Japanese Samsung Products page. I know the GF2 has not launched in JP yet (at least through DoCoMo, but I can't believe that my new toy is absolutely useless. In other news, all of this fiddling around made it so that the old Gear Fit Manager app will not connect to my old Gear Fit anymore so I am now using a 3rd party app which is not quite the same. Any advice is appreciated, otherwise I guess I will ride this out until the GF2 launvhes here and maybe an update will e forthcoming.
PS: there are two reviews in Japanese in the Samsung app market for the new Gear App. They are both very bad reviews stating that the app will not connect o their various devices.
Idk. Just sad and wanting to vent.

Can you install the Gear manager app for non-Samsung phones to see if that works?

I tried to find that app, but the only one that shows up in the Google play store for me it the one for Samsung phones and when I Google the link for the nonsamsung device app, it shows but when I follow it, the play store still redirects me back to the samsung version. I DID try to use a 3rd party app with the Gear Fit 2, but it still wouldn't maintain a connection. Thanks for the response though.
I find myself in the same boat as you - very very frustrating. I researched the compatibility, and based on the specs they SHOULD work - no good reason that they wouldn't. Sooooo frustrating!!!
Finally got it running on docomo galaxy s5 unrooted
Here's how
1. Install 'Samsung Accessory Service' (apk search and download)
2. 'Gear Manager' Installation (from the Google play)
3. 'GearFit2 Plugin: installation of (apk search and download)
Did it in this order and it worked.
Enjoy
Thanks Tony!
I was using a Galaxy S6 edge from Japan and had these problems, and manually installing the accessory service and fit2 plugin worked like a charm. Was on the phone for 2 hours with Samsung's customer service and got nothing.

List of Removable Bloatware on Samsung Galaxy S7

Hi. I posted this in the Gerneral Q&A forum (here), which apparently doesn't seem like the right place to post that in.
Here it is:
Hi. I'm looking for a list of all the apps I can uninstall (or disable if necessary) for the device to keep working (and for the Settings app to still work). I did reset my device a few times after a DeadObjectException error and the Settings app not responding. Before reseting, I noted which apps I installed myself and retrieved my text message backup file (the contacts are there and also in my SIM card). Everything else is either backed up (e.g. Pocket Frogs data) or the data doesn't have to be kept (like clearing app data).
Please list apps as the package name (e.g. Pocket Frogs's package name is com.nimblebit.pocketfrogs), so I can quickly find and uninstall/disable them without choosing the wrong one by mistake.
Note: My samsung galaxy s7 is model g930t (I don't know if that has any affect) with my carrier as tmobile.

Correction: Listing the package name (e.g. google play services) is ok, but the file name (e.g. com.google.andoird.gms) is preferred. I changed to using APKSharp, developed by a fellow XDA member, which does display both name variations.
I currently have nothing on the device (stuff is either backed up/saved or deleted), so resetting is ok, though not preferred. I did check out other methods, but my device isn't supported for most of them. (It's the same samsung galaxy s7 G930T model with tmobile as the carrier.)
Note: A partial list is ok; I just want to get started somewhere without hitting errors and issues like "Settings keeps stopping".
Note 2: Stuff I don't use: samsung stuff, google stuff, bluetooth, nfc, dictionary, all game-related "tools", car mode, tv conenction, radio, voicemail, news/briefing, most tmobile stuff (excluding SIM card-related stuff), etc.

Ah, thanks. I've been looking for something like that for days... Also just found one here. Both, unfortunately, isn't specifically for an S7, but at least I can follow most of it.
Additional guides/threads: Galaxy S9 Plus and Galaxy S8. Also found one for S7 (and a script, too), but I'll have to verify it works with m device.
I guess my main issue is what do I need to keep for the device to function properly while removing bloatware via ADB or APKSpark (ADB-based I assume).
No idea why I couldn't find the lists before. Maybe I was looking in the "wrong" place.
