Quality Android 2-Din Car Stereo. Which is the best and why? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay the title may say it all but I am looking to get myself an Android Double Din car stereo.
I currently have a 6.2" Clarion and the screen size is adequate and it is very usable and I love the radio but I would prefer to have an Android stereo, possibly with a larger display.
I haven't made a decision yet and I'm extremely interested to hear from all of you to see what type of Android car stereo you are using and why you think it's the best one.
Ideally the stereo I would like to buy would have a 7" screen that is either detachable(and doubles as a tablet) or motorized with full DVD capabilities. I'm not super picky about the screen size. DVD/CD is not a real requirement but would be nice to have.
I do not care if it can be rooted but root would definitely be a plus.
The newer the Android OS loaded onto the stereo the better as long as it's stable and everything works as you'd expect.
I've already done a bit of research on these stereos and was leaning towards the XTRONS TD729A or this OUKU Stereo found on eBay but I know there's hundreds of different stereos out there and what better place to get advice on Android Tech than XDA?

Also saw the Newsmy NU3001 Android 4.4 Double Din car stereo. No DVD or detachable panel like I'd like but it does seem like a nice stereo. Opinions?

That's really nice. Do these Android radios sync with the phones?

I think that radio looks nice but there's no way that would fit in my dashboard. I had to modify my dashboard to fit a double din stereo to begin with. The way my current stereo is installed it sits flush in my dashboard. It almost looks factory. See the photo attached below.
I'm looking to recreate that "almost factory" look again but this time I'd really like an Android stereo. That stereo you linked to would require extreme modification to my already modified dashboard.

And yes these stereos to have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and with the correct accessories, 3G as well.
If the stereo has Google apps installed and is connected to the internet, it will sync most information with your phone.

This Sony stereo is not an actual Android car stereo. It's a double din Xperia phone mount that replaces your radio and puts your Xperia phone in it's place. As far as I can tell anyway.

I'm really starting to think that this one might be a winner.

Certainly the unit I posted before wins on specs, but this one is more good-looking, for sure... it seems nice. I can't understand why you said that the device with the tablet wouldn't fit in your car but this one would... both of them are 7", right?

The tablet unit you posted before has a much larger bezel around the screen. that bezel makes it too large to fit in my dashboard. Might not be the same for everyone but if you look at the photo of my current setup that I posted up above, you'd see what I mean.

I'm currently looking at such radio and that one is for the moment the best I ever saw, and not the more expensive !

The only thing I can see about that stereo that kind of makes me keep looking at others is the fact that in the item description there's no mention of the stereo having Google Play. Maybe it's been figured out in the xda thread I linked to in that post but without Google Play what's the point in an Android device?
EDIT-- Even though the website selling the unit does not expressly say that Google Play is pre-installed to the device, there are hundreds of posts in the xda thread that mention "install this from Google Play" or "install that" or "I installed this from Google Play"
I'm assuming that considering it is pre-rooted out of the box that you can either install Google Apps from recovery or that the apps are pre-installed.
Here's that same radio only it has 2gb of RAM.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/7-2-Din-Uni...05&prg=11353&rk=2&rkt=6&sd=271673297957&rt=nc

I confirm Google play is installed.
I just check one video on YouTube and I see the icon installed
And checking randomly in the xda post related, I see discussion about "where do Google play and Google play music install their files after downloading "
So definitely yes

Yeah I really think I like that unit. My only gripe with it is the lack of DVD capabilities which truthfully isn't an issue because it's been confirmed that you can plug in a portable hard drive and use that for movies and music just fine.
That and the damn price tag. For the model with 1gb ram you're looking at about $400 and the model with 2gb ram is over $500.

I'm personally waiting on the new generation of the HD Homerun.
The new HDHR4 should be coming soon (they said mid 2013 at CES), it is a network dual tuner that connects to your wireless router via ethernet ... you can then access the tuners on many different devices.
The new version is said to have a native android app, hardware transcoding and DLNA.. I can't wait, i will be buying it on day one.

The idea of HD Homerun is very interesting but I do not know if i will pay 100$ when my usb stick for pc costed 15$. I want a usb stick to be used in my house because i do not have a television in my bedroom or in my kitchen where i have a plug to connect a dvb-t.
I have seen a conceptronic device (CTVDIGANG) but i do not see any review and in the specifications doesn't say if it is compatible with our tablet. Has anybody tried this one (or other similiar)?
The app recommend by babylonbwoy has horrible reviews. Have you successed connecting your Pinnacle PCTV Hybrid Pro Stick 330e to your android?

Well the biggest problem with that app is that it only supports Android 3.1, at least that's what it says in the description.
There is a TVMan app that seems to have good reviews but I don't know if you can use it with any dvb-t stick and I don't really know much about dvb-t sticks...
Edit:
There is also this app that seems positively reviewed for the most part:

In french translated playstore it looks like it says from 3.1 but not sure, and I don't find the change langage option in playstore new ui to check how is it in english. Last update is from july 9, again difficult to understand all that.
Not good at all for that price!

It states only for 3.1 in English, that's what I read it in the first time, hence my comment. I find it very odd that he has yet to update the app to at least 4.0 if it works in any way. The only positive review he had was when the guy tested it at his house, when he went to work (where he wanted to use it mainly) it didn't work because he had to forward ports (I think that's what he said) and even then it still didn't fully function. It seems really really sketchy to me.

No, he didn't delete it. He jacked the price up to $6.50 and changed the name of it so he could get rid of those negative reviews and sucker people into buying his app. It wouldn't surprise me of he has done this several times before. Here is his new link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.goprasoft.dvbt
I am considering reporting him, I don't like to make a fuss but it was obvious his app was **** and didn't work at all and noe he has changed it to get rid of the reviews so he can make more money on people who don't know any better.
Edit:
Now it has changed from the app only supporting "android 3.1" ,which there was no 3.1 only 3.0, to only supporting kernel version 3.10.

Definitely not a trust worthy dev, you're right.
I wonder how people can try this in 15mn allowed by Google, he has not even a demo version, and if he change name of his app refund will be hard to get ! Not a good bet in long term, he will rip fews people maybe but negative review will come back sooner or later.
no problem for reporting him as he isn't honest.

DTV would be good but isn't having loads of wires defeating the object of have a small, lightweight portable unit? Out of curiosity I'd like to try with my USB DVB-T tuner but I don't think it's something I'd use all the time.
I set up a Mediaportal Server running from my main NAS which has a Dual DVB-S2 tuner. With a little messing I now have full live TV on the tablet anywhere. I got the 16GB wifi version so I use my phones 3G for it when I'm out and about. I also set up a web server running from the same backend that links into my Movie and TV show database. With Dolphin and the Flash plugin, you can get Live TV, Video, TV Shows and Music from your home server/NAS in a browser. The easiest way is to set up Mediaportal and MPextend, then just use aMPdroid on the tablet. It's not a 5 minute set up by no means but worth it in the end.

Oh yes I'll try at some point. Trying to find a driver that will run it will be the hard part. Maybe when the CM people and Ubuntu really start digging into these devices we may get a working one but up to now I've had no luck. I have a few old USB types to try so I'm not limited to Hauppauge.
I must repeat what I said before though.. With the tools we have these days, there's no point in having bits hanging out of any wireless enabled device. The benefits just aren't there. I can get any UK channel on my tablet nigh on anywhere that has 3G if I wish. I don't worry about DVB-T/S signal strength as it's fed from my home aerial or dish. And as a bonus I get my film and TV collection too. From what you guys have said, you have the hardware and the software for both PC and Android is free so you might as well put it to use until it can be tested direct in the tablet.... Or that's the way I see it
I'll let you know if I find anything out and we will see if we can get one in the tablet running.

4.4.2 makes car integration fantastic finally!

So now having had a chance to take a trip in my truck I was so pleased to see how much better 4.2.2 is with my stereo.
Here is a list of what now works that didn't with 4.3
1. BT Metadata now pushes title and track etc.. from my music apps to my trucks touchscreen
2. Stereo was 100% instead of 75% in announcing an incoming text and reading to me if I choose to on touchscreen
3. I can finally!!!! Hit reply on stereo from text and then speak and have it send without having to touch my phone or even choose template replies if i don't want to have it dictate
So glad to have this all working and hope others see these advantages as well

[Q] Is there a root available for the Xtrons TD730a Double Din Headunit?

Hi there,
I hope I'm posting this request in the right section.
I have recently bought myself an Xtrons TD730a Double Din Head Unit, I would post a link to it but unfortunately I am unable to as the forum won't let me. You should be able to find the unit in question with the help of google though.
On the whole I've been pretty happy with the device. The main downside I have discovered though is that it appears to be running a rather cut down version of Android 4.1
It is unable to communicate with my Bluetooth OBDII device, which having read through a few of the other threads on here seems to be a common issue with many of the Android Car Headunits.
The other, more annoying issue I've noticed is that when I am streaming music from my home server over 3G, it doesn't seem to support gapless playback when changing to the next track or Audio Chaining or whatever it is known as. I use exactly the same apps and set up on my LG G3 and gapless playback works fine on that.
From what I can gather, the necessary APIs to support Audio Chaining were added in to Android API Level 16 which was introduced around the time of Android 4.1 so this Headunit should support it.
I'm wondering, if the Headunit is running a rather cutdown version of 4.1, is it possible that Audio Chaining support has somehow not been added to it's supported APIs?
Is there a way I can check if this is the case? And if so, can I get them added in somehow? I'm guessing that a good place to start would be if there is a root method available for this device?
I hope it was OK to post these questions here. Please let me know if I should have posted them elsewhere.
Cheers,
Jim

Even though its an 7 inch screen it is the same as the AN21 head unit internally. So it doesnt support obdll over bluetooth. Try getting the wifi version that it works. Try the same rooting method as that head unit.
@ little off topic question
Im sorry I do not have the information on that for you but it shocked me when you said that it didn't work with your phone over bluetooth . I was thinking about buying this model and want to make sure that the Bluetooth is able to stream my music and also make phone calls from the dash !? Is that possible with this unit ?
Another question I had is about the sound quality
The watts are not listed online so does it get loud and clear or do you need an amp with this unit
Again sorry I couldn't help ( sorry for asking a bunch if random stuff )

Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction :good:
I've had a good read through the AN21 head unit thread. I've ended up upgrading the system software to version 2.8.3 and I've also managed to root the device.
The result is now that I am able to play my music over 3G without there being any annoying gaps between each track.
As you've mentioned, it still doesn't support OBDII over bluetooth and this does turn out to be a hardware issue rather than a software issue. In fact, the software itself does clearly support OBDII over bluetooth, it's just the hardware version of my bluetooth controller that doesn't support it.

The head unit does connect to my phone over bluetooth, I never said that it didn't. I was referring to a bluetooth OBDII adapter (for reading out diagnostic information from my car's ECU) that does not work with the head unit over bluetooth.
I've not actually attempted to make or receive any calls over bluetooth, or to stream any music via Bluetooth, but it is my understanding that the head unit does support these features.
It is probably a good idea to have a proper read through the"AN-21 U" - Unbranded 6.2" 2 DIN Pure Android 4.1 Car Stereo Radio Head Unit [ROOTED] thread available on here in the Android Development and Hacking --> Android General section as it seems as though people have had different results with regards to sound qualities depending on which software version / MCU version they are running on their unit. For what it's worth, I've left my MCU version untouched as it looked as though it was a whole different ball game to change MCU versions as apposed to simply changing the software version.
I can't remember off the top of my head what the speaker wattage outputs are, I seem to remember something around the 45X4 mark, remember those are peak ratings. I do have an amp running a sub woofer in the boot of my car but the rest of the speakers, which are just the standard speakers that were supplied with the car, are powered directly off the head unit.
I've got to be honest and say, I don't think they go as loud as they did with my previous head unit, a Sony MEX-BT3100U, so I will probably look at amping them at some point in the future, probably after replacing them with some good quality aftermarket speakers.

Anyone know if it is possible to root the Xtrons TS702L or how to upgrade it ?

What is a good android box?

Hey,
I was thinking about an Android box thingy and there are many cheap options.
I would like to play around with some emulators (PPSSPP included) with a USB controller I have and watch some anime ^^ I'd also not like to spend in excess of ~$35 (max $45)
Any good cheap boxes that can do that? Preferably that support Lolipop since I love its UI.
I've seen ones with Amlogic S802,812 and 912 CPUs and RK3188 and 3368 CPUs.
Which one is decent? eBay links would be appreciated ^^ Thanks! (OpenGL ES3 support would also be nice.)
RK3188 drives my LighInTheBox mk809iv. It's got 2GB RAM, 8GB EMMC, a full sized USB 2 port, hdmi, microSDXC port, runs KitKat 4.4, comes with Kodi pre-installed. I rooted it with Kingoroot.com, so that I could run a vnc server on it. I remote control it with my phone which running the free Valence app, or sometimes I remote it with Screen Sharing on my Mac. It plays nicely, and I get decent enough Wifi speeds. It's run everything I have thrown at it. A quick search for mk809iv will bring up a whole lot of these devices, even some with 16gb EMMC. Some will arrive pre-rooted, others will not. Look for Realtek Wifi for best compatibility if you intend to flash it (which requires a PC). It is fun to play with, but looking back on the experience, I'd rather have had a small Android phone with MHL/hdmi-output, as it would have been much easier to set up if there was a screen on the device itself. Just a thought. Used Galaxy s3 handsets are getting cheap enough now, with the same functionality. Cheers!

Yep! Any suggestions regarding TV apps, websites with TV shows, forums for TV boxes and input devices? I don't really think the bundled remote would be something I'd wanna use. I've seen wireless small keyboards with trackpads, do you know anything about them?

The forum I use for my Android devices is usually XDA, right here.
I used a USB keyboard and a mouse to set mine up.
For the record, I rooted my MK809 IV, which has an rk3188 SOC running KitKat 4.4, with Kingo Root, to allow me to run a VNC server, because I use a free Android app called Valence on my phone as a wifi trackpad/mouse and use my phone's keyboard to type on the Android TV. Root allows me to use the free RemoDroid app to control my Android TV from my phone or tablets from anywhere in my house.
Kodi comes on mine, and it's a free app in the Play Store anyway. I tried to set it up last April, but it kept crashing. If you are into that sort of thing, it is a very capable media server for sure.
For playing local files, I think MX Player is the champion app.
I ultimately bought a Logitech k700 keyboard with built-in trackpad to use with mine - I purchased it refurbished on a Newegg special for fifteen dollars! I take that keyboard everywhere with me. I love it. I prefer to use an actual mouse, but since I bought the k700, I have not missed mice enough to actually plug one in. I like it because it is nearly full-sized, but still compact, and it comes already set up to use a single USB wireless dongle. Range has been great, and after almost a year I am still on the first set of batteries.
Just today I was looking into purchasing the remote that came with your TV box, so please, let me know if you like it.
I bought a Hubman USB 2.0 hub in case I need more ports. It seemed like a good idea to have it, but I have not actually plugged it into the Android stick yet. I'm sure it will support a mouse, keyboard & usb thumb-drive just fine.
I don't want to go too far off-topic, so if it's okay with you, I'll pm you a list of apps I use for video. Nothing seems to slow down my aging rk3188 quad. Your rk3368 octa-core is going to be fantastic! Would you please post a link to the auction? Even if the auction is closed, I'd love to take a look at the device. The price you paid is unbelieveable!

China gadgets also has firmware updates for it! ^^
Thanks, I'd love a list of apps!
Thanks for the links! It's insane that we can buy an 8-core computer for forty bucks. So sorry that I haven't checked in for a while.
I haven't really been watching TV or movies lately. When I've had free downtime, I've been playing a roll-playing game that's called Skydoms. I didn't think I'd get hooked on it, but then I did.
How is that box working out for you?

USB DAC's - I've tried the FiiO K1 - other DAC's which are working?

Sooo, i bought the small but powerful K1 yesterday but I couldn't figure out how the K1 will work with my Nexus 6. I've connected it via OTG and it got recognised but yeah no sound came out of it :crying:. So I connected a passive USB Hub to the OTG cable. I can't say why but connected to the hub the K1 worked fine.
This isn't a great solution for me, has someone got the K1 working without a USB hub? Which USB DAC's are working for you?
the FiiO Q1 works with N6 like charm. I got the K1 and it's not working as well (not enough power to drive the amp I guess)

on that price point? yeah, absolutely!
but here's the thing. Audio is not just about the DAC-AMP and then you got that sound you always wanted. Q1 is bit warm and smooth (K1 as well) and it's a perfect match for vocals and instruments (and maybe some other genre).
and there's the IEM/Headphone/Earphone factor again..

Yea, also looking to pick up a pair of Sennheiser CX300 II soon. I take it Skullcandy is not a very "audiophile" brand Also, I'm running the stock ViPERAtmos package which, in my noob opinion, is pushing some pretty good sound when I have ViPER Clarity and the Dolby Atmos active equalizer going.

CX300 ii 's a good pick for bass! I had the chance to try one few years back and it was "good".
I'm no "Viper" kind of guy or those kind of "sound enhancement" but if you enjoy having enhancements, why not

What would you personally recommend me considering that my total upgrade budget is around $150? I was thinking $150 would get me the Fiio and the Sennheisers but you sound like you know what you're talking about, so I would love to get your opinion on how I should upgrade!

Also, I stream from Spotify. Thought you should know that.
The TEAC-HA-p50 works very well.

My recommendation would be..
I am not sure about how much this will cost you but i got this for $30 : http://sea.audio-technica.com/products/headphones/lifestyle/all-earphones/ath-ck330is . It is a fun, all arounder IEM and great for the budget.
for the DAC.. I think the K1 would be enough if you're listening from a laptop. But if you don't really mind carrying extra DAC-AMP for portable uses, the Q1 will serve you well.
==
but hey, if you do have access to local headphone store, go on and try what they have in offer(audition, as i love to call it). Who knows that you will find better deal there right?

Thank you so much for that link!
FiiO E10K also works like a charm. I supose E18 must work too, because it's battery powered.
I have an AudioQuest Dragon Fly that works great. I also use USB Player Pro to play hi-fi flac files from place like HDTracks.

Strangest thing is that E10K works well with N6, while the even smaller K1 does not. My E17 (not 17K) used to be working very well too!

Before you go buy a dac or amp you might want to do some research from head fi.
The dac on the nexus is aight but it pushes little power for a portable device.

Did you use a direct micro USB hub or a normal USB hub connected via a micro USB to USB cable? Also is the USB hub USB 2.0 or 3.0?
