Hi Guys,
i just got my HDX (7" - Thor) this week and was trying to get the Thor GAPPS ROM by Cpasjuste to work. Having found nothing specific for FireOS version 13.3.2.1 i went ahead and tried my luck with the "old" version of the ROM (thor-gapps-13.3.0.0-v2.zip).
Unfortunately i couldn't get it to work and am back to factory defaults. Which is good, since it's not a brick. So now i'm trying to play it safe and wait for the developer's magic to happen
i'm eager to play around with the device, but don't want to risk losing my chances of running a custom ROM in the future. i already own the first Kindle Fire and wouldn't want to miss the near stock Android on that.
So, finally, my question:
If i use the HDX Toolkit to root and disable OTA updates, i assume it will be safe to use the device until the bootloader gets unlocked or some other magic happens. Am i correct with this assumption?
Edit1 [2014-07-09 - 21:21]: sorry for the soonish edit, but i just prepared the device in case someone confirms, that it is more or less safe to use it with OTA disabled.
Upon disabling OTA, i get a few rows of "killed" messages in the HDX toolkit. When i first disabled OTA i saw that some services were being disabled or uninstalled. Is "killed" a confirmation that the components are already killed? i have already factory resetted, as i cannot find a way to do a full wipe. The result is the same.
Thanks in advance.

Never factory reset stock slot if you have run the OTA blocker the utility also has a eNAble option for the OTA blocker always uninstall xposed framework and modules before factory reset also .. Always returning the unit to as close to factory as you can before doing a factory reset in factory recovery. Otherwise you risk breaking your device.. If you look around you will find ways to do a manual update to a slightly newer firmware just not the newest and your ROMs will work.

Thanks. i will look for the update method you mentioned. i might have already read it on Friday, but didn't think it would apply to my version.
i have removed everything related to modding before factory resetting from the FireOS settings. At that point, there was only safestrap left, which i uninstalled.
If i decided to stay on FireOS after all, until a better method comes up, is there a way for me to check, if the OTA blocker is actually working?
lol

Thanks, i'm always scared with such new devices.
"Update failed". Perfect.
i got the Thor GAPPS working by now, so i'll try using that for now.
I have been working on a new version of Safestrap. This aims to allow devices that aren't unlockable and running update-kindle-xx.4.5.2_user_452004120 to install HDX Nexus ROM v4.xx.
I am looking for a Thor and Apollo tester to confirm that they can indeed install Nexus ROM v4 with this.
I have confidence that this works, but if you agree to do this please understand as usual that you do so at your own risk.
So far the new version has been tested on unlocked devices to confirm compatibility and works fine.
The next stage is to test on locked devices, which as I have said have high confidence that it will work.
The prerequisites for test are:
- Must be running stock update-kindle-xx.4.5.2_user_452004120 firmware
- Must be rooted
Things to be aware of with the new version:
- Secondary slots boot, but the WiFi module does not load
- Since the secondary slots work but have no WiFi, you will need to flash Nexus v4 to the stock slot
Let me know if are interested in helping with this.

Congrats!! Rolled the dice and won!
Be mighty careful around the 4.5.2 update. Those who received it via OTA (may have been 4.5.3/4.5.4) were treated to a hard brick with no known resolution. Best do the update manually using the procedure/files outlined in this thread. Stay off wifi until 4.5.2 upgrade is complete.
Saturn is fine with 4.5.4, but I assume you are talking about apollo/thor

Yes I am talking about Apollo and Thor, If anyone can loan me a Saturn that is rooted then I will work on Safestrap for it.
Thor Safestrap - Nexus ROM v4 working
@zamtang has confirmed Safestrap and Nexus ROM v4 is working.
Thank you zamtang for taking a leap of faith, it's not something I would ask without been confident and without serious consideration.

Hello, do you have an Apollo device?
I am interested in testing safestrap and the new nexus rom... is there any chance that this will hard brick my device? If yes, what percent?

my device had no safestrap but it was rooted decided to let it auto update so turned on wifi and checked for update. the update centre said no update found, so went and downloaded 4.5.2 from amazon that was taking a lot longer than it should. checked the update center again. a glitchy 4.1.1 was downloading with the download bar glitching from view. i then let it continue pausing 4.5.2 download it then promptly rebooted and attempted to install 4.1.1 the screen went black through the update. hard brick.. i have my warranty and i have another one coming.
here's a tip don't update to 4.1.1 if you are rooted.
hoping to get a kindle with <3.2.6 my first one was originally that <version

For the benefit of others ...
NEVER take an OTA update on 3.2.8. Every reported incident has resulted in a hard brick. Keep WiFi off until OTA is blocked. The only effective method is via HDX toolkit. Renaming otacerts won't work on 3.2.8.
@ggow Any idea when this version will be released for Thor or if I could help test it? It would be awesome to have 4.5.2 with Safestrap.

Hello everyone, I've been very tempted to root my kindle fire hdx 7 and I've finally decided to do it, but there is still one thing stopping me. Let's say I want to go back, no root and update to the latest version of Fire OS. How do I do this? If I do root, I will be running 4.5.2 with SuperSU from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59156161&postcount=56
Thanks!
There's an unroot option from within SuperSU.

Hi friend!!
My long-short story:
1. New kindle fire hdx 7 on 4..5.5.
2.Rollback to 3.2.8.(only one rollback method now I think). (unable OTA updates if not bricked!)
3.Upgrade to 4.5.2 (root with cve method or king root)
4.there I try to install Gapps, too many error on the forum so I didnt! sideloaded netflix stoped working.
----------------your part here----------------
5. disable wifi, reactivate OTA. unroot on SU options.
6. enable wifi and start all the updates, this way you are back to 4.5.5 without brick and with easy.

Responded in another thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2901813
I modded my HDX with root and Xposed. I want to make the manual update from 3.2.1 to 4.5.2 , but the bin update files i tried (3.2.8 and 4.5.2) didn't work. It said that they are invalid.
Do I have to edit the build props for this? Seems strange to me, because those are real updates not downgrades.
I did a factory reset, but 4.5.2 update still is "invalid". (got it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/general/update-1314-4-1-1-probably-sangria-t2901813)
Why do you want to update to 4.5.2?
You'll lose your chance to unlock the bootloader and install TWRP.

It was due to the fact that my touchscreen isn't working correctly and I wanted to try to fix it with an update.
For the update process everything worked (creeping through various update processes) and I am now on rooted CM11 with xposed and everything I wanted (using safestrap v4).
Sadly though a the old problem occured like always: The touchscreen wasn't fixed at all.
I'd see this thread as closed and will start another one about the tochscreen problem as it's a whole new topic.
EDIT: If somebody is interested which way I went for the update or about the broken display see my new post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/kin...-7-touchscreen-partly-broken-display-t3308106
I was able to accomplish a Full Root on the latest OTA update on the phone.
Previously I was running Stock 4.4.4 KitKat with SuperSu and had issues with the OTA, since I had removed Apps.
I installed the Stock 4.4.4 ftf to the phone using the flashtool.
Then was successful in receiving the Prompt to update.
After Update, I installed. "Kingroot" for android. just google it. NOT KINGOROOT or any other.
After running kingroot, King User was installed.
In my experience, no other root method will achieve full root. I was not happy with using Kinguser, since i was a Supersu fan. But anytime I successfully removed kinguser, to swap for Supersu, I had lost partial root access, and could not uninstall apps. I could only Freeze.
I also tried Superuser, but only kinguser allowed me to fully uninstall bloatware, and other apps from the phone.
Just thought I would share.
Thanks, Iambedook. Every experience helps. Kingoroot got me into trouble once before in the past.
Can you flash back to 4.4 from 5.1.1?

I'd love to try this, but I'm kinda unwilling/aprehensious to take the chance with rooting apps. Can you confirm that you can use flashtool to revert back to 4.4? I just know Verizon would block such a thing in an update, they can be jerks. (like the moto razr maxx hd) Any insight is appreciated.

Yes, you can revert back to 4.4.4 through Flashtool. Doing so though, you will not have Advanced Calling or the refreshing Lollipop UI. Also, unless you do something about it, you will be promptly reminded all the time to update to 5.1.1.

Giga,
If I use this method to root 5.1.1., can I install dual recovery and Camera 2 and the FM tuner app? I'd also like the updated flashlight you put together but don't see that as a separate install. Should I wait or go ahead with this method for root?
Thanks, Pat

You may root, but I would advise against anything else. the Z5 Camera is most likely not compatible for our phones on 5.1.1, and neither is the FM Tuner. It's a whole lot I can't touch base on yet.

I would also like a confirm if this. Because I'm sitting around and waiting for a rooted 5.1.1 copy for the phone. Im on 5.0.2 right now and all is working good but still waiting. Thanks all.

Just an FYI, after I needed to revert to 4.4.4. I was struggling to receive updates to get back to 5.1.1. I had to use the Flashtool, 3-5 times to get the correct update prompts to appear. If anyone else had similar issues when reverting back, let me know, but re flashing repeatedly worked for me.

Just scroll down to the z3v dev section.
I was actually able to flash the stock ftf coming 5.0.2. I had to flash it with default options the first time with it failing. I then found that I have to basically flash noting to clear the error on the phone by checking everything in exclude and the other exclude box where it shows its not displaying any files in the middle of the window.
Once that went through, I was able to upgrade from stock to .44 and then the the two updates for 5.1.1. After all that I reset to factory again to test on rooting the phone. I was too, able to obtain root with King Root. I was able to install zxrecovery and xposed with no problems. I'm actually used to King Root as I had to use it on the Verizon branded 7" tablet that didn't have any other possible methods previously. I also found that Busybox was slightly out of date (difference of 2.0) and installed to /sbin which wasn't too big of an issue.
Beyond that my phone seems to get pretty warm and typically complains about not charging even on a 2 Amp charger.
Can you tell me how you avhieved root because i want it but i can't revert to kitkat for some reason (flashtool won't recognise the update file) and I'm on lollipop. I've tried kingroot(app version) and it didn't work, tried reverting didn't work and tried all the framaroot, towelroot and such apps but none worked. I want working root, xposed and twrp. I can't find any way to do it please help.

Try King root again. I used their apk on the phone. It rebooted once at 30%, but when I got back in the app after the reboot, it successfully rooted the device.

Thats why then. This is only for the Z3v the Verizon variant.
Hi there,
New to the forum. After several hours of reading and searching, I became bewildered enough to decide to register and post .
This thread looked promising. I'm currently on rooted 4.4.4 with this phone. I also have a custom recovery installed. Im trying to get to 5.1.1. As of right now, I assume my only option is to wait for a 5.1.1 ftf so that I can update, because the OTA updates won't work (phone reboots into the custom recovery and the update is interrupted).
Is there an easier way to get the OTA? Or am I stuck waiting for an ftf?
To be clear, my goal is to be on 5.1.1 with root. But at this point I don't think I can get to 5.1.1 at all.
