[SOLUTION] Insane battery drain - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone. I'm writing this in hope of helping others with the same problem I had. For 2 weeks, my i9300 starting acting strange whenever I had it running on battery and especially when I had 3G activated. The battery drain was incredibly high (like 1-2% per minute). Then, the screen started flickering and it would disconnect me from GSM network. Next, it started restarting itself and jumping from say 70% to 20% after a restart (matter of seconds). I tried changing ROMs, kernels, etc. Nothing worked. So I searched around and it seems it's the battery itself that's causing the problem. Nothing software related. Went to buy a new one and also compared it with the faulty one. It had bumps on it (maybe if I thought to look before). Anyway, this solved all the problems and it now performs really well. No more insane drain on the battery. It works as new. I did check other threads but none seemed to replicate this exact issue. Sorry if I missed it and already exists. Good luck

Battery Woes, extremely hot device!

Hi guys, I finally sorted my issues with the disappearing radio, but now it seems I have another issue.
Starting 2 days ago my battery just started draining like crazy, I'm lucky to get an hour or 2 of use out of the thing.
I noticed when I plug it in to charge it it takes forever and the device gets extremely hot. The battery is so hot you can almost burn yourself when you touch it. Maybe its just my imagination, but it seems to swell slightly when it gets very hot as well.
Obviously I have stopped using my device as I am worried about the battery catching fire after all the Lion battery issues lately.
Just wondering if anyone else had experienced this? Is the battery covered by any type of warranty?
I'm sure I need a new battery and I'm hoping that will fix the issue, hopefully its not some internal problem that is causing it to overheat.
Thanks in advance,
-Kai
Have you backed up your device and hard reset to rule out any software issues? I've run into this before, and there was something running on my device that cause the battery to drain VERY quickly. Never figured out what it was, but after a hard reset and reinstall, everything was fine.
I've had similar issues since putting black 3.01 on, draining anyway, not overheating as yet. I have stopped the battery draining by instaling Daniel Herrero's Bandswitch and setting it to gsm during the day, it seems to switch between gprs and hsdpa more frequently now with 3.01 which drains the battery enormously. Havent done a hard reset yet though.
you should feel my battery after tethering for hours, sigh....
Hmmm, mine spends half the day tethered at work, no heat issues thus far (apart from one time I left it under my pillow (too much Jack) and the heat woke me up (Not a great way to ease into a hangover)). I only ever have battery drain issues.
Yeah I dont think its a software issue as I have done several hard resets, and tried it with a couple of different Rom's and radio's, with no other software installed.
As for the 3g draining the battery, I have my phone set to only use Quadband, not UMTS or 3G.
I'm hoping to pick up a new battery tomorrow and maybe that will solve my problem.
I wonder if I might be able to get a new battery for free from HTC? I'm going to send them an email and see what they say.

same problem here
Hey invictive,
i have the same problem, and am also thinking about buying a new battery. plz let me know how the new battery work.
thx
I've just had the same problem. It was red hot in my belt clip & bat low warning.
Mines only 3 months old, been fine until now.
There were a lot of apps running incldung camera & wifi.
I'm going to charge again & close all apps, see if its ok.
had the same problem with my first tytn. called htc support (germany) and they told me that this behavior is not normal (obvious)
i recieved a free replacement, allthough i had to send in my tytn and not only the battery.
edit:
it was even worse with wifi turned on...

[Q] Battery Drain Problem

Hello all,
I purchased a Galaxy S2 at the end of July, I live in the US, so it was from Amazon. The phone has been phenomenal, an amazing piece of technology.
I rooted the phone and flashed Lite'ning Rom 6.1 XXKH3. Still worked great, with no problems at all.
However, starting about a week ago, I am getting an extremely fast battery drain. Since then, I have spent hours looking at threads trying to figure out what was going on. I updated the rom to UltraToxic Rom v8.0 XWKK5, still no change.
I used Titanium Backup to freeze many widgets and app processes, still no change. I am currently using better battery stats to monitor wake locks, however after managing the wake locks, still no change.
I then bought a replacement battery thinking that the battery may have been bad, sadly, there was no change.
I have been trying to find a solution to this and had tried many other suggestions in other threads to no avail. As of now I have come to the conclusion that the device might have some type of malfunction that is causing this.
Am I going crazy or am I missing something obvious? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I have also re-calibrated the battery, still no positive changes.
Seeing the battery graph, you have your screen on a lot of time. Screen sucks battery a lot, so there might be one of the causes of battery draing.
Also you seem to have all day enabled 3G/WiFi, that also sucks some battery with it.
You can try JuiceDefender and see if it can help you extend a little your battery.
change kernel
Try flashing hardcore's "SpeedMod Kernel" and you will never complain about your battery life.....
After flashing this kernel my worse battery life was 1day and 12h with 3.5h screen on and wifi 85% ON.

Lol.... It's obvious he has some kind of battery problem, he is not using the phone much, and galaxy S 2 should have at least 5-6 hours screen on time and the phone lasted 3 hours.

Since I had all data on the phone backed up, I did a factory reset. I also flashed the UltraToxic Rom v8.0 XWKK5 as well as the suggested SpeedMod Kernel. When the battery was at 100%, I calibrated the battery. I tried to leave the phone idle as much as possible, I did use the internet for about 10 minutes to check e-mail, news, etc. So now the phone is essentially "empty" in terms of apps downloaded, I got rid of all widgets on all home screens.
There was still no positive change, I do really like the SpeedMod Kernel though, I do notice faster responsiveness from the phone.
I am beginning to think that the problem may be the hardware and not the software or battery.
I've got similar problems here. I am suspecting a hardware problem (I damn well hope it isn't coz i got mine from hong kong) because my phone never goes into deep sleep mode for more than 50% while the screen is off. I've tried at least half a dozen different kernels and roms and nothing helps, this is even in airplane mode i.e. with pretty much everything turned off. I've tested wakelocks and dont get anything more than a couple of seconds. I had my battery charged to full at 6:30am this morning, went to work and got home and it was dead after just under 12 hours with being idle 75% of the time. This is worrying as most people's battery lasts at least a whole day.
So I know it can't be the kernel, I know it cant be wakelocks, I know it cant be wifi or 3g data or anything of that nature so the only thing it comes down to now is hardware...
Funnily enough I've had exactly the same issue since about a week ago. Even when I take it off charge it's almost immediately down to around 80%. It's lasting around 4-5 hours, even when I'm not using the phone much, plus it gets really hot.
A couple of times Social Hub has appeared high up on the list of battery draining apps, although I don't use it. It doesn't always show up though. I switched to the CF-Root kernel and started using GO Launcher EX recently and wondered if that (or one of it's addon widgets) could be the cause.
It's really bugging me now!
SOLVED!
After days and days of trying to fix the issue of the phone not sleeping (and therefore draining excess battery whilst idling) I have finally fixed it!!!!!
First i noticed that along with the sleep problems, I was getting the problems with car mode popping up randomly, the phone going into mtp connection mode, and thinking its charging when it was unplugged. After looking into these issues (and i thought it was a longshot) I decided to do what people were saying and CLEAN THE MICRO USB PORT.
Now you're probably thinking I am a crazy man, but now im just crazy happy that I don't have to send my phone back to Hong Kong!
Instructions:
1. Get a clean, dry, soft-bristled toothbrush.
2. Take any case you have off the phone.
3. Gently insert the bristles into the port and "flick" it out softly.
4. Repeat this about 10-15 times
No matter what ROM, what kernel, what modem i tried flashing, my phone was always sitting on no more than 50% deep sleep mode when idle and had no wakelocks or "rogue apps".
I am now getting 90% - 98% DEEP SLEEP MODE!
I obviously can't guarantee that it will work for everyone, heck how it solved the issue is a mystery to me, one which probably an electronically-minded/computer systems person could answer. What I can say though is I searched high and low online for about a week. I tried different kernels, I tried different ROMs, I tried "re-calibrating" the battery, I used BBS to check for partial wakelocks. If you too have tried all this and have had no success please PLEASE try this and see if you have success!!
Thanks for reading!
....
Or if you didnt...
TL;DR: If you're having battery drain problems clean the micro USB port with a soft toothbrush.
The phone never sleeps when charging, the CPU idles at 200 MHz, whatever was in your USB port was probably making contact with the pins that tells the phone it is connected to a charger when it actually is not, so it was idling at 200 MHz and was not receiving power, that's the only explanation I could fathom
Do two things:
Install CPU spy and show us what the deep sleep percentages are,
and try disabling wifi. Also, what is the router?
I have a battery drain issue; but its kind of screwey as i will reboot my phone and lose about 20% of the phones charge. If i turn it off and leave it off for an hour the charge comes back. Its random as well; only happens once a week. I have had this problem on different roms. You might have a similar problem to me. Possible the hardware that detects battery state is knackered.

[Q] Problems with the battery life and the mobile network connection after ICS update

So I'm on stock 4.0.3 now (kernel 3.0.15-I9100XXLPQ). Everything was fine right after the update. But a few days later my phone started to use more battery than it had used: I'd used to have around 60-65% of battery after coming to home from school, but a few days after the update I had like 40%. Also, sometimes I was not getting incoming calls and text messages, despite the fact that the signal bar (sorry, I don't know how you call it in English) was full.
I looked through the threads on xda forums and one guy suggested cleaning the micro USB port. His theory actually made sense for me, so I cleaned my micro USB port. I also installed CPU Spy to check if the phone uses the deep sleep mode.
Today I woke up and after 4 hours I got 91% of battery life. 'Hell yeah, problem solved', I thought. But suddenly the battery drain started again. I asked my friend to call me. He couldn't, because apparently I had no signal, but the signal bar had also been full.
Look at the screenshot. '1' is where the battery started leaking. '2' is where I rebooted my phone. After the reboot everything is fine, but I think this problem will appear again shortly.
These battery drains and losing the signal are really annoying, one night the battery dropped from 50% to 30% in 2 hours without even touching the phone (with WiFi, data transfer, GPS and Bluetooth off). What causes these problems? Can it be related with this bug in ICS?
The thing is that even Samsung hasnt been able to do a proper release as GB. GB stock rom had quite a solid battery life...Many people have seen massive battery drains and in most of the roms phone doesnt go into deep sleep. Hence causing of a lot of battery consumption.Id suggest not to use stock samsung rom and shift to a custom rom or downgrading to GB. I myself have read a lot of threads with the same problem that you are having.
I'll shift to CM9 as soon as these issues with recording and watching videos will be solved.
I can understand the battery drain, but I completely don't know why there's a problem with the signal. It's not that my phone doesn't go to the deep sleep at all. It just glitches at a certain time and the battery leaks and the signal is "lost".
I'll check tommorow if the phone really doesn't go into the deep sleep when the battery is leaking and nobody can call to me.
Bump, because the problem with the signal is really annoying.
I am thinking that its possible that all these poor battery and ICS posts are maybe that the users have not flashed firmware for the phone but rather generic stock some other providers firmware .
As i said only a thought as the majority are not direct firmware updates .
I would be running Better Battery Stats to find the drain anyway .
jje
It's been two or three days since I did the factory reset. Now I'd say that battery got better, but the problem with the signal still occurs.
Which mobile operator are you with?
Plus GSM, I'm from Poland, my Galaxy S II is the international version of course.
Okay, I've installed CM9 on my phone, but this problem still occurs (altough now the screen uses much less battery, due to CM9's better brightness managing).
I'll explain it once again, because now I can describe my problem more accurately:
SGS II shows that I have signal, however, I can't receive calls and text messages. While it's happening, the battery life is dropping a lot faster. By "a lot" I mean 5% in 10-30 minutes when I'm not doing anything at all.
This started happening a few days after update to ICS. What should I do now? Install a modem from GB?
Yes start experimenting with older modems i would look to the last working GB modem you had .
Also some are reporting the later ICS is better than earlier releases .
jje
How do I find out what version of modem I had before?

[Q] [HELP] Battery Drain, probably hardware issue

Hi guys, this is not an usual battery drain problem. I am more or less an advanced user of android but I´m writing here because I tried all my ideas and none of then worked.
I have 2 Neo V, stock. One day one of them started to have battery drain. Im talking about 6-7%/hour with no usage, the other one is around 1-2%. So with any use my phone don´t last more than 14h.
I started to check the usual(wifi policy, services running..), and don´t found anything, I switched the batteries between both to see if that was the problem but drain was still in the same phone.
I rooted the phone, tried BetterBatteryStats and CPUspy and all is OK, most of the time DeepSleeep etc.
After all I unlocked the bootloader with the S1tool testpoint etc and flashed some Cyanogen 9 rom + kernel, and the problem still persists.
I think there is nothing I can do and my phone is useless because I suppose I don't have warranty anymore.
Any ideas about what could be? Even if its hardware, what kind of hardware problem can make this high battery drain if the CPU is not working ?
Thx in advance
edit: In HTC we can also flash different RIL´s (radio interface layer) to improve signal db, avoid high battery consumes etc. There is something similar in NEO V? Because I didn´t find anything.
There are a couple things you can do:
1) Did you check that you had mobile signal all the time??, because losing mobile signal is THE biggest battery drain possible
2) Post some BetterBatteryStats screenshots so we can see what's happening under the hood
3) Try a different ROM/Kernel combination, that sometimes helps
And no, there's no RIL flashing here, just different ROMs/Kernel/Baseband combinations
I HAD the same problem
Even I faced a similar problem on my Neo V after getting FXP CM9. FXP 122 was fine. But FXP 123 and 124 drained the battery very badly(No considerable Deep Sleep in CM 9). So I switched to AOSP Polish blood. Battery life was excellent but it lacked customization, so I switched to AOKP v38+ AOSP kernel. Superb ROM but again not so good on battery (but better than CM 9). Yesterday I flashed the FXP 125 kernel. More than 5-6 hrs of WiFi, 15-20 calls and texting and some instagram and I still have 20%. I'm charging my phone now!!
I´ve uploaded some screens of bbs, cpuspy and batterydrain with wifi on and after switching it off.
Hope it reveals something, what really annoy me is the deep sleep activated most of the time, so I don´t really know what to search.
Just as I thought, what's happening to you is what happened to me a year ago and I thought changing phones would help.
Your problem is basically, bad signal, as you can see in screens 4,5 and 7,8 "No Data Connection" and "No or Unknown Signal" are preventing your phone from going into Deep Sleep, the problem comes from bad 3G signal (or just bad network signal if you don't have 3G) and that is known to basically eat up all your battery.
How is the network signal where you are???, because it looks like it's realllllyyyyy bad.

Are you sure? Take a better look.
Or at least deep sleep graph. And those graphs "No Data Connection" and "No or Unknown Signal", are also ok(ven though the name is confusing a bit), I have the same.
I'm not COMPLETELY sure but this is exactly what happened to me a year ago with a Samsung Galaxy Mini, also if you look at graphs 4 and 7 Deep Sleep doesn't have as much time as the data and signal bars, to me that seems like those two are keeping the phone in wakelock state more than it is spending on Deep Sleep.
I´ve been experiencing this problem for weeks. About signal I tried everything because:
- Phone worked perfect with SIM and all bars (I live in the downtown of a big city)
- When the problem started to happen I switched to another phone and this one was working without SIMcard so there was no signal at all.
- Some days ago I used another SIM which also have all bars.
I Don´t think there is a problem of the signal . Also in my other phone, and as you can see, Deep sleep is working fine.
I reread your first post and the only hardware problem that I could think of is a faulty battery, did you use to leave it charging all night??, because that tends to burn the battery and it does hold a lot less charge.
According to what I've read, everything seems to be fine software side, my only idea would be that you reflashed stock ROM and check if the problem persists, reflash but don't restore any data, the problem could be a misbehaving app.
I have 2 Neo V (my father´s and mine) I switched batteries, and the problem persist in the same telephone. Also both of them have less than 2 months, so batteries are new.
Also revised the voltage in the CPU and it is alright.
Well, the only thing left to check (IMHO) is a misbehaving app or service, maybe check for task killers or battery savers in the "broken" phone, those are known to eat up the battery like it's ice cream!!
I believe I have the same problem. I can't remeber when it started since I tried lots of roms,
but I flashed latest ICS from pccompanion with no other tweaks for some days and it
continued the same.
I also thought about bad signal, but at night in flight mode it also spent 40% of the battery.
With a good kernel, undervolting, 2G... I can get to 15% 20% at night.
I've also switched batteries with other neo's and no difference.
Phone is 5 months old.
Not sure if it might come from the rooting process. If I understand right, the 0% issue
that some were having was more of hardware issue (or I'm completely wrong?) Then maybe
there is also something related?

0% was a software related error (flashing GB 2.3.3 after having 2.3.4 broke the battery gauge firmware), however that problem doesn't exist on ICS, I find it reallt strange that both your phones have that problem, I've had my Neo for 8 months and the most battery I've lost overnight has been 10% (with CM9 and really bad signal).
Maybe the best thing you guys can do is send your phone to service.
I have a similar problem with my mt15:
when I buy my phone battery was ok. about two days with intensive social use, no gaming.
5 months later, battery drain begins: deep sleep and 8% per hour , airplane mode 8% per hour
tried almost every popular rom in development forum ICS stock, codename, tweaked, cm7.2, cm9, jjhybrid, KA, ...
tried every popular kernel: stock gb, stock ics, alliance, suave, super, nightelf, cm kernels...
battery drain happens while phone ON, happens with airplane mode, AND happens with PHONE TURNED OFF.
I thinked about battery fault. replaced my battery with a new genuine one. Same results.
If I remove the battery from phone, IT does not drain. 24h later battery is still 100%
So my neo has a hardware problem I think. And there are many people with same problem. look for "neo battery drain while off"
Neo is a buggy phone. you can be lucky, or not. but many people has these issues or 0%batt.
I give up!
After sony abandoned x10 mini pro (random reboots, eclair), I had given another chance to sony with neo. I like sony designs, but Im really tired.
sorry about my creepy english
Try freezing "Calendar" with Titanium Backup and see if battery lasts longer. It helped for me.

about battery drain when phone is off
its not consuming your battery while its off
when you are turning the phone on
cpu usage will be on 100% to run all necessary sevices and apps and most use goes to get signal
that's normal
i suppose its aroumd 3-5% of battery consume
im not gonna be at the same side with you
actually neo is a wonderful phone
i beated the score of sensation xe in antutu benchmark with it
just google it around the internet
there will be some fix mate..
Neo is not buggy at all maybe yours but not mine
this might work for you
i just found it
1-flash build 42 official rom on your device
2-root the rom (there are plenty of ways around internet)
3-flash this kernel via flashtool forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=780407&d=1321113977
4-now turn on the phone its gonna show 85% of battery
5-install this forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=897721&d=1329003275
6-plug the charger into your phone
7-from the menu of app select start full charge
its gonna take 3-3:30 to be full
may be you've seen it around web
i translated it from a persian forum
HIT THANKS IF I HELPED YOU
In my opinion, a phone broken by a software update/downgrade is buggy.
About battery draining while off, not all neo have this issue, but mine is not the only one.
On the other hand, about power consumption while booting, if i remove battery while off, wait some hours, and replace, after boot battery is 100%
Sent from my JJ's Hybrid MT15i
I had this problem too, even when the mobile was off, the battery was drained...
I sent my phone to after sales service and now it's normal drain 2 - 3% per hour when idle. (I was on stock rom and kernel, never changed).
There is maybe a bad hardware series

[HELP] High battery drain

Hello guys, I have a P768 L9 (JB, rooted and bootloader unlocked) about 3 months and in the last three weeks he presented a strange behavior. It all started after a day it overheated, the battery reached 0% and hung. After that I started to pay attention to battery consumption and realized I was different. Consumption was approximately 10% per hour with no use in standby and all connections closed. I made hard resets, I started testing with other roms, even tested with Pacman (yes, the camera did not work), yet consumption remained high. Configured the fastdormancy and changed nothing. After that I went back to the original rom and started testing, installed juice defender and the consumption decreased to about 6% per hour, which I still think is a lot of battery. The BBS does not indicate anything that may be the cause of it, and Battery Drain Analyzer says the culprit is IDLE and Radio. I can not understand because also tested in airplane mode.
I made some screenshots (link below) and hope someone can help me, please!

I have no idea what can be, love my L9 and I'm losing hope
people, no one is going through this? nobody knows what to do?
