[Q] Galaxy S3 Stuck at boot logo - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I was using my phone, checking emails and making phone calls just fine. Then I got home and went to the computer to do some work. I noticed that my phone was showing the Galaxy S3 logo. I though weird. So I removed the battery, put it back in but still the same thing. I though maybe it was broken so I though a factory reset would be a good idea. BUT, I can't go to Recovery. When I try to go to Download mode, it opens up the interface where it says "Volume up" to go to Download mode or "Volume Down" to reboot your phone. Even when I press the Volume Up button, the phone restarts. So basically, my phone has gone full retarded and I can't do anything, no Recovery or no Download mode.
Anyone knows anything?

Doesn't look good but have you tried adb to recovery.

Yes, It doesn't work. I even tried holding Vol Up + Home + Power buttons for 10 minutes hoping the phone would go to Recovery. It doesn't even want to go to Download. It shows the Download menu but when I click the Volume Up button, it simply reboots the phone. And it was working fine before it happened.

I thought it might not work but was worth a try...It sounds like either corrupt partitions or emmc chip corrupt/damage but all the solutions I know of need you to at least get into download mode and if adb is not working as well then the only thing I can suggest is service repair.
This is the situation I would hope not to find myself in maybe somebody else as some suggestions but sorry it's not looking good.

This honestly sucks. I have been using my Galaxy S3 for two years without any problems. It was my main device for everything. Maybe because I have used it for 2 years without rest for work has caused a chip failure.

Bootlooping, Odin mode stuck, need a bit of advice

OK, here the story. My SGS2 started acting up a few days ago, it thinks it's charging all the time now. I searched and found that this seems to be a common problem with the port, so I cleaned the contacts on the microUSB connector, but it's not helping. I decided today that I'll just take it in since it's still under warranty, and I'd like to do it after work today since I live almost an hour away from the AT&T Store near the hospital. Problem was, I'm running AOKP on it and I don't have access to a computer with Odin on it where I can restore it to stock. Then I find the thread that details how I can download the .tar file and flash on the phone with Mobile Odin. Seems to work great, but it goes into a bootloop afterwards. One member posted that he had the same problem, but it was solved by booting into recovery and doing a full wipe. Here's where I have a problem now.
I can only boot into Odin mode, and it gives me the choice where it's asking me if I'm sure I want to load a custom binary or cancel and reboot. When I click that I want to load the binary, I get to the Odin mode screen; it reads
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
Downloading...
Do not turn off target!!
That's it. If I reboot normal, it goes into bootloop. Otherwise, it sits there with the battery logo showing, whether it's plugged in or not.
I'm pretty sure when I get home tonight, I can plug it in and get something going on my desktop, but I'd like to hit up the store before I head home. Anyone got any ideas or suggestions?
If you can't boot into recovery using the three button method, I'm not aware of any way to put it into recovery mode without a computer. You didn't say, but I assume you used vol+, vol-, & pwr?

Yup, and that's what comes up. I'm thinking it has something to do with the fact that the phone thinks it's plugged in. I guess I'll just have to plug it in my desktop when I get home and work on it from there. Worst case scenario is that I just take it to AT&T tomorrow as it is, tell them about the false charging problem, and when I tried to do factory reset to see if it would fix things, this is where it's stuck.
I can't believe I spent the first 30 years of my life without a cell phone and now I don't feel right if it won't work for a day or two.

I'm having the same problem after trying to install S-Voice. You indicate that there is a way to get into recover using a computer. Can you explain?
Thanks.

need adb.
adb reboot recovery
Google
Update:
I actually managed to catch it when it didn't think it was plugged in and do full wipe. It worked after that, sorta. It didn't think it was plugged in all the time, but it was still real funky; like the power usage curve started high, had a sudden big drop, then went up from there. Plus, when it was off, it would flash between a grey battery with a circle and a green on, back and forth. And I couldn't power it on unless it was plugged in. Once I showed them that, AT&T gave me a new SGS2. It's rocking Shostock2 now, so problem solved.

[HELP REQUEST] Rooted I9300 stuck in CWM 5.8.4.0

I had problems with my rooted S3 (International) earlier today, and that's why I thought that flashing a lower version of CWM may fix my problems. However, flashing CWM 5.8.4.0 actually made things worse.
I am currently stuck and cannot navigate out of CWM. Pressing Power or Home don't do/select anything, and browsing the menu is next to impossible, too (menu disappers).
Phone is not recognized by adb, it does not show in Windows Explorer either. Got a "failed to install" when I connected it.
When I try "adb devices", I only get "list of devices attached" without the phone showing.
Whenever I reboot [after bettery pull], I get back into CWM again.
CWM does not react to button presses as it should; doesn't go anywhere no matter which keys/buttons I press.
Battery pull doesn't do anything; neither does Power+Volume up or down
Looks like I am screwed... am I?
Anyone has an idea how I can get out of this and back to either CM9, or install a newer version of CWM (over the obviously dysfunctional version 5.8.4.0)?
Thanks!
flashed touch recovery?
No, it's not 'Touch'... I wish it were that simple...

pull battery, insert usb jig (buy it), insert battery. gambate!
Mmmh... You sure about that?
I used to have an USB jig for a different phone before... No idea if I still have it somewhere.

Nope, battery pull/power+vol don't work. Tried that already. Does reboot straight into CWM again (no download mode, or else)

[SOLVED] I9300 stuck in CWM > Back in ODIN mode!
Geeez... That was a close one!
Apparently, and in order to get into ODIN (Download) mode on the S3/I9300, one has to press & hold...
1.) Volume down
2.) Home button
3.) Power
Once I did that, my S3 (I9300) booted into ODIN Mode. [ Big sigh of relief!!! ]
I thought it was just Volume Down + Power... but apparently I was wrong. Guess that happens if you don't use Odin for flashing all the time.
Can't wait to get home and flash a proper recovery, so I can get my phone back into work mode. It sucks not having a working phone, trust me on that... ;-)
Thanks for your input, guys!

Phone died, Want to Sell. Personal files?

Hello,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S II AT&T. It is unlocked, rooted and custom rom flashed. I used it for a few months then it starting just shutting off. It rebooted the first time or two it happened but then it refused the boot the 3rd time it turned off. I have tried numerous new batteries, soft/hard reboots. I tried holding in the up/down volume with power button to try to get into recovery but now nothing works.
I would like to sell the phone on Ebay for parts but I had personal information file and photos on the phone.
Any suggestions on how to remove personal files on this phone? I am concerned that if I sell it and a technician buys it and gets it running that they will find my credit info. etc. .
Or do I just break it further and through it away? I am undecided on what to do with this phone.
I purchased another phone for a girlfriend and now she claims that phone will not boot up either so I may have two phones with the same problem.
Please advise.
Take out battery hold both volume plug usb into phone and computer and see if download mode works

Tried a jig? If it doesn't even go to download mode that's not a good sign
When I hold down the both volume up/down and the power button it goes to a screen called.
Warning!!
A custom OS can cause critical problems in phone and installed applications.
If you want to download a custom OS, press the volume up key.
Otherwise, press the volume down key to cancel.
Nether option starts the phone.
Before I had a problem with the phone it would go to clockwork recovery.
I would like to go to clock work recovery and try flashing a new rom.
but I can't get there.
Any ideas to get this phone fixed?

That is download mode. That is exactly what you want. Go to the stickies and read the back to stock thread and follow the directions. Then you can boot the phone and finally get your data off and erased or you can keep the phone.

u can still get into download mode, thats a good sign. that means its not bricked YET.
remember, as somebody said before "a brick is a brick" . no sign of life what so ever. try this webpage and follow the directions for getting "back to stock". http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1511838
from my understanding, u have just landed on xda. i would suggest u get somebody's help who knows stuff better than u before u brick ur phone. remember every random thing u flash would take you closer to brick. i had been through this hell.....and somehow managed to get out...lol
good luck
by the way, i tried a lot of things to get it going including flashing a stock rom. nothing worked when i flashed a kernel "for i777 "(ics/jb depending on the rom before u went into trouble) and it was back to life.....as simple as that

Root or no root?

It's still very early an I see a few people going stir crazy over finding a way to root their phones. I for one am not sure I want to root just yet, the reason being Samsung pay. If it's going to be as awesome as they say it will be I don't wanna miss out due to tripping Knox.
Now I do love flashing and all things root related but I'm willing to hold out.
What about you? Root or no root? Why?
I root right away even if I don't have a "good" reason too. Its the because I can. I don't really care about the tripping knox thing I guess because if you have insurance there is always a chance the device could get "broken". Then you don't have to worry about if its tripped or not. Thats the position Samsung has put me in I wouldn't typically do something like that. So ya now I'm just waiting for TWRP then I will try and make a ROM.
I tried to use chainroot, and got stuck on the logo screen. normally you'd battery pull, go to recovery and wipe data. but i can't find any way to shut down the phone, before doing power-upVol-home.
And now i've tried to odin a stock recovery to undo chainroot, odin fails. could re-run odin with auto-reboot off, but again, no way to shut off and go to recovery.
at this point i'm stuck with the blue screen asking me to use smart switch on PC to do emergency recovery. but smartswitch says the device is not recognized.
thoughts? thanks!
I don't care about warranty just samsung pay. I heard it was harder to make roms with exinos is that true?

Not sure what device you have but there was a video that said not to use the edge version of the root, and to use the regular S6 version. Running the S6 version will fix your broken device. Take this with a grain of salt, I'm just telling you what I saw. I will post the video link if I get a chance.
PS not sure if this actually helps you or not..
Rooting broke Google Play Movies on my phone, battery life was miserable and phone never went to sleep. After I unrooted everything went back to normal. So I am not going to root and just wait until things are cleaned up.
Every phone I've ever had has been rooted as soon as I got it. Not this time though, because of Samsung Pay.
If rooting breaks Samsung Pay, I'll never root the phone

not for me right now: i have the turquoise error screen telling me to use smart switch. volDown + power for 7 seconds turns the screen off... and then right back on a couple seconds later. and i can't seem to slip in the recovery key sequence during that gap.
volDown + power + home is a diff story: that brings me into download mode. but i don't have anything that works in odin right now without failing. very possible that i don't have the correct rom, or that the rom is fine but i just need to go into recovery mode to complete, but i can't seem to do that!

How about volume up+power+home to stock recovery to perform a factory reset?
No root for me I'm afraid! If I root this device I lose my nfc payment app (Semble) as it checks for root and locks the app if it's detected. Besides I've rooted every other phone I've had since iPhone Gen 1 and I don't really have the time anymore now I've got a 1 year old boy!

Why is ODIN failing? Drivers installed? Where did you get this recovery? If ODIN can see your device you flash back to unrooted stock firmware.
Also, someone mentioned that you can Vol down + power will shut the device down. As soon as the screen goes black take your finger off the power button, press and hold Vol up + home then press power. You can go right from download mode to recovery with just the buttons.

1. i got them from mobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G925F/
I would love to hear if this is a good source. also, I don't know if it matters exactly which of those firmwares to choose (there are many, you choose country and carrier)-- i don't know which one came with this phone as it was sent as a demo to me and i didn't take a screen shot of the info screen (does it matter?)

2. that doesn't work for me, tried 15 times. I'm stuck with this turquoise error screen telling me to use emergency recovery in smart switch. i can easily get over to dload mode too. From either place, volDown + power gets the black screen and then immediately goes right back to the turquoise error screen, ignores anything else i seem to press, can't get into recovery.
No root for me either. It's hard lol. I miss it mostly for the adblocker. But I'm too worried that rooting with make it so I wouldn't be able to use Samsung pay when it comes out! If a root method is released that won't trip the KNOX sensor then heck ya, I'll root right away!

Phone possibly bricked, any and all assistance is appreciated.

Hello,
I was recently on the Oreo Beta for the Note 8, and because somethings were not working properly I was trying to revert back to nougat. I downloading Odin 3.12.7 and the firmware from SamFirm. While flashing the files I got a message on Odin saying something along the lines of "Operation completed (could not write) success 0 failed 1". After that I am unable to get past the Samsung Galaxy Note screen, and when I power down using Volume Down and Power i get into some menu that says "Upload mode: Unknown Error" and I can't do anything from there. I can get back in to Download mode but Odin pulls up just a "all threads complete Success 0 Failed 1." Otherwise I can do volume down and Power and get back to the same Samsung Galaxy Note screen. Is there any way I can fix this?
Thanks

Thanks for the feedback, my internet crapped out and without my phone I was having issues getting online. But I just went to Tmobile and told them my phone woke up like that and they exchanged it. Thank you for the information though, hopefully if anyone has the issue they can try your method to get back up and running.
