factory reset? - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Should you do a factory reset of the N9 after getting the latest OTA update?

Some people do that regularly. I normally don't unless something is buggy.
Sent from my LG-D852 using Tapatalk

I wouldn't.

I did because I was having issues with horrible lag and after the factory reset all seems fine. This said if your Nexus 9 seems to be working well after the update there is no point in wasting your time reseting the device.

Rebooting a computer, or tablet clears the cached RAM. Anything being held in RAM is released with a reboot.

I had to Factory reset mine after I got it. It kept disconnecting my VPN connection.
After which, It worked great. My factory reset was the LR21X or whatever the latest one is called, so it mad no difference to me.

Will a hard reset get me back before the OTA updates

im wanting to get before the factory updates (software 1.13.651.7 and the HTC WATCH update) because i dont have my phone button on lock screen and becuase i cant watch Green Hornet, even tho the watch update (from what i read) is supposed to fix that problem
It will remove all software updates, but will not remove the hboot updates.

No, it won't. Once an OTA is installed its installed. A factory reset only erases data and apps you installed from market or elsewhere. The only way to undo an OTA is to root the phone and install an earlier RUU.

There is a post that shows all the stuff that the sd card comes with. When I installed my 32g card at the store I gave the 8g away. But I installed everything back on the sd card. Green horet was one of them. look at the post and install. IIt takes a while to download put it works. hope that helps.

Actually, factory reset and try it. There has been 3 OTAs so far. If you factory reset you will lose the last two. You will not lose the first one. The last two installed to data, and that's the reason you lose them. I have factory reset 3 times now, and I had to reinstall the second two, two of the three times (the first time they were not out yet).

You also got screwed on the speed of the card, the Evo cards were class 2 and the Evo 3D came with a Class 4 card.

I'll give you a partial right on this. The first OTA was a true OTA and updated the rom. The other so called OTAs were an update to a specific program, Watch, which did not rewrite the rom so those would get erased by a factory reset. If it was a true OTA then a factory reset would not reset the OTA.

Low Storage alert

Hey guys:
This morning I stared getting the low on storage space errors. So started deleting apps because the error said I need to free up 512KB and I only had 68free.
Well now if I reboot the phone it takes me straight to the storage wizard and wont let me do anything else. I cant even get into settings.
Any ideas?

Yeah, this is crazy. Gonna attempt a factory reset now.
I'd suggest a cache wipe and see if that clears anything. If not that a factory reset will do it. I only had that issue when I had a lot of apps installed on my N1.

Tried clearing the caches and that didnt work. So I'm resetting now.
Sorry, figured a cache wipe would clear everything and not need to reset. I am assuming your phone is rooted. Wondering if that's the stock sprint rom or if that's a bug in a different devs rom.
Anyways, hope the reset works.

Maybe it's overload or overheating, unstable ROM/kernel, maybe it's a virus. There can be many reasons.

The thing is, it's not doing anything at the time? Nothing that would overheat it. Also, it's very cold here right now, so weather wouldn't be overheating it either. The ROM/kernel have been fine until recently, neither seemed unstable. A virus...seems unlikely, but I'll install a virus scanner and have a looksie.

Why on earth would it take your forever?
Use use pro version of Titanium backup and you can restore all you backed up apps/app data in once go.
Re-stock device or re-install custom after wiping everything via recovery and if problem persists its likely a hardware issue, either main device or battery.
Didn't find a virus.

Well, I didn't have Titanium Backup Pro. So it took ages sifting through what apps I wanted, now that Google just puts them in there among a ****-ton of other apps I may have tried for a couple minutes before deleting.
I suppose.
Okay, wiped everything via recovery and flashed a new rom and all -chose [--VK--™] this time-'

If the warranty deadline is not expired, you can try.
try removing your battery and replacing it firmly in place and snapping the cover on firmly into place.
I have had this issue since moving to the larger OEM Samsung battery kit occasionally and I feel it may be q seating issue with the battery, as this method solves it until it gets dropped or bumped about a few times.
Also Sleep of Death I believe requires a reset (7second power button hold) whereas my issue is resolved by turning the phone on normally (1sec power button press) hence how I found the battery issue..
just my experiences and $0.02..
It just randomly reset and took half the battery left with it. Bah. Seems to be the same issue as this topic. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103087&page=14

System data taking 69GB of space

Hello
I have a problem and I haven't found the answer yet.
System data on my phone takes 69GB (out of 256) at the moment. It was 30GB few weeks ago, then it grew up to 49GB and after I performed a factory reset it went up to 69GB (+20GB every time).
It seems like System is taking/reserving more and more space uncontrollably.
Has anyone have similar problem? I see people having 15 or 30GB system size, but quickly growing to 69GB must be wrong.
I don't really want to root my phone as too many things can go wrong with Android 10, has anyone have any idea what's going on? Thanks

I don't think it is. 69GB is way to much. Pretty much everyone else's is in 25-30GB.

I know I could try MSM tool, full format etc, but backing up over 100GB of various data just to encounter the same problem in 2 months is not what I'd wish.
I reported the problem to OnePlus bug tracker, but I doubt they'll gonna fix it with the next update.
I know a little bit about how dynamic partitions work and I'm OK with sacrificing some storage for problem-free updates etc., but it seems there's a serious bug in implementation and my system reserved way too much space.

I don't think logs would add 20GB just after factory reset, I also disabled and cleared all logs in the logs settings (typing *#800# in the dialer).
I'm searching and waiting for the next update, still got 70GB free so no rush (yet).

Question Camera causes phone to crash... Still

Jan update on and the phone still crashes nearly every time I open the camera, it's taking the piss now.

Not good... sounds like factory reset time.
Did you try cleaning cache and data of gcam?
Try in safe mode too...
I experienced the same issue during my initial unboxing of the phone. Uninstalling updates for Camera, opening the app, and then reapplying the update solved the issue for me.

This is why I don't do firmware updates on my Note 10+'s. It's not just with Google where updates break the device.
OTA updates is the first thing I disable.
Not saying it's impossible but in over 2 years I never was forced to do a factory reset due to malware. My current load will be 2 yo in June; still fast, stable and fulfilling its mission with little maintenance. My oldest stock N10+ is still running on Pie...
Fear and hype are poor substitutes for a good product but that's what Google trying to dope us into believing with their lame Apple knockoff security "enhancements". Between Google and Samsung's ball dropping orgy its cost them a show of no confidence/no sale for the last year plus of their respective OS and hardware releases.
Rule #1 if your OS is fast, stable and fulfilling its mission... let it be.

Before you factory reset, try going to main settings app, Apps, then all apps, tap the three dots menu, then, reset app preferences. This resets all app settings, back to before use. You don't lose any data, and just need to grant permissions for apps when you open them again. A restart after might be a good idea after resetting app preferences. This worked for me on another device, when, after an update, my phone was doing things I couldn't figure out. It worked, and prevents the major work of restoring after a factory reset.

No fear here... the Google scare hype doesn't phase me.
The fact is that this phone is not cuddled. The current OS load will be 2 yo in June, last update was 11.2019. It's reasonable secure as is... real world tested.
I'm a conservative pragmatist; I don't fix what isn't broke and is fulfilling its mission. This load continues to be fast and stable with minimal maintenance... good as it gets. So instead of chasing glitches, I'll watch a movie... rough times.
Regardless I'm prepared to reload at anytime and I have a zero tolerance for malware. If I can't erraticate it within one or two hours it gets nuked. I'll have it back running in about 2-4 hours about 99% restored.
So, I flashed the full april update and reset but the stupid lump of craps still crashing. I give up.

I'd be that unlucky one where they couldn't reproduce it. I'm hanging on for the next version of android as apparently it's fixed in the beta. I'm not alone, there's other forums and googles own help pages with plenty having the same issue.
Try to delete cache and data from Pixel Camera Service, possible that this got corrupted. It's visible when you go settings -> apps -> 3 dots top right corner -> show system.

I have again uninstalled the camera app and updated it but I'm not holding my breath after it doing it post forced flash.
