The reason I asked on here is because I was hoping for something better, more "official" on xda than just some Googled sites... people brick phones over things they get from the Internet

not sure about other methods of rooting, but I'm pretty specific in avoiding the breakage of KNOX... if you're the same, here's an up-to-date guide to root and keep KNOX at 0x0 http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5/general/how-to-root-s5-firmware-knox-0x0-t2909352

With this you'll still need to odin the recovery. So exactly trigger knox ? I think I'll just odin the recovery, not bother with rooting the stock rom, and just flash a rom

Odin the recovery? no... if you're on the latest ROM already, all you do is Odin the NE6 kernel given in the post, run towelroot, verify root, Odin NK2 kernel back and bam! rooted the latest NK2 ROM with KNOX intact.

I understand how the method works. It's like they can't root the latest kernel or something so revert back for root and come back. My point is if your final goal isn't just a rooted stock phone, there is almost no point in this ? Because since the phone doesn't have a looked bootloader you can just odin a recovery and flash a rom without rooting first

Why are people wanting to go back to 4.1 from 4.3? I saw a vast improvement in my note's performance and can't see a reason as to what you would be loosing/gaining by traveling back.

OOOO
I see. So accepting a verizon OTA unroots your phone and makes it so you can't put a custom bootloader on it anymore. That sucks. But if you never took the actual OTA then you are good to go with a bootloader is what you are basically sating?

No I didn't update it I believe it still to be gingerbread. Wasn't sure whether it would brick my phone, updating it whilst rooted.

Sorry, I thought you wanted to ROOT. My bad.
If you update via OTA/Kies you'll get unrooted. In case you don't wanna "touch" your device in anyway.

Flash a stock rom. There's CWM flashable versions floating around here somewhere (look in General/search), or you can get Odin flashable ones from the usual places (Samfirmware, AndroidFirmwares.net). Ordinary stock kernel in rom package will overwrite your rooted kernel.

Please help a newbie

Ok, a little info on me. I have had an iPhone since 2007. I decided to buy a used G S4 to see if I would like it. So far I like it a lot but need help getting it just right.
I am trying to install custom roms on my device. I want to try CM.10 first. So far I have achieved root aaccess, and installed gooManager.
The problem is that when I install a custom recovery script so I can have a custom recovery the phone locks up. What could I be doing wrong? I am sure this has been covered a hundred times but there is so much info on here its overwhelming to someone new to android. Thanks to everyone for the great work and contributions s already made.
Try odin to flash!

I watched all of the videos. Do I have a locked boot loader? Does that keep me from installing open recovery script? If so do I need a device with an older baseband in order to root, install custom recovery, and run custom roms?
I have a SCH-I545 running 4.3 with an mk2 baseband.
Yes, your bootloader is locked and currently there is no way to unlock it. Safestrap is your only option for ROMs now. Start with reading the OP.

Check out www.swappa.com
People have em up for sale, just look for the last three letters of the build (or baseband I suppose) to be MDK. Anything newer than that is locked down.

Information is easily available in these forums concerning bootloaders and rooting and recoveries....with you phone your only option is safestrap and just one or 2 roms are available..
look before you jump
Nobody posts the build number in their adds on ebay or that swappers site. I'm messaging them all individually haha. Lmfao why didn't I read about this more before buying this boot locked pos lol.

I will be honest this is the first phone that i have ever been satisfied with rooted debloated stock but I am very greatful my flashing itch is able to be somewhat scratched with safestrap. The above builds aren't worthless but I guess that all depends on your point of view and what your wanting to do with your device.

the stock roms run extremely well and with root you can debloat pretty easily. S4 phone is a superior device to most anything else out there at this moment whether you mod it or not

How to upgrade towelrooted ne6 to nf6?

Hello all,
I was wondering if someone might eb able to tell me the best way of doing this.
I have a s5 running on stock ne6 software knox not tripped rooted with towelroot.
I have modified some files like the framework and csc xml files to allow write to sd card and bypass tethering checks.
How might I go about updating to nf6 and rereooting it again with towelroot?
I was thinking of trying to just use kies to update it but thinking it might be better to get the firmware from samfirmware.com and master reset the phone and flash it using that to start with a clean slate.
And then I should be able to reroot with towelroot again.
That way I have the corrrect bootloader and modems and everything.
What do you think?
What is the best or easiest way to upgrade this to the newest software and reroot it again?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.
I found a couple of things so far.
It does not look like you can use towelroot on nf6 is that rriight?

There is a way (confirm by 2 people) to upgrade to nf6 and keep root and does not trip knox. Read it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2790292
Thank you for the link
I am a bit confused reading through that though.
Do I need to upgrade first to nf6 then downgrade again?
Can I just use mobile odin to upgrade it?
And if so will that insure that I have the newer bootloader too?

From what I gather you need to have root in ne6, which you already has, then follow his steps. Read post #10 for addition settings you need to do to gain root in nf6.
I think you get better response post questions in that thread than here. Good luck.

flashing the nf6 full tar should enable volte.
And flashing the full tar will not remove apps/data/reset the device. I was concerned about this before I flashed. Hope this helps...

Just install it in Odin .
Then download a rom of choice and follow the install instructions for the particular Rom

There's a way to root every version of software they're released. Since the bootloader is unlocked, all that's needed is to flash a custom recovery, then when TWRP asks you if you want to root, just click yes, and you're done. It'll always be like this unless they lock the bootloader.

Why? Tmobile does even care.
No I know that, but Samsung AllShare Cast Dongle does care.. the dongle won't work on a rooted device. I had a Samsung galaxy note 10.1 that I rooted but I used triangle away to reset counter and it then would work. I use my tablet and dongle most nights and my other allshare in my car for my appradio. The S5 and Tab S will be first devices I didn't root
Any news on Knox?
Its been awhile since i rooted my phones and flashed roms. I juat rooted my s5. But i dont believe i installed a custom recovery. In the past i always downloaded rom manager and installed cwm through the app. But it says device not compatible. Or ud download goo manager and install twrp through that app and i dont see the version for my tmobile s5 listed. Can someone help me with flashing a custom recovery. And recommend any stable custom roms i should try out. Also if there is anything i need to be careful of when flashing i dont care about tripping my knox counter. My device isnt warrantied anyway.
