i installed the M5 kernel on AOSB rom without nandroid backup and now i want the ROM's own kernel as it was better optimized after analysis, so how do i extract it from the rom.zip file on my pc? and then flash it separately through recovery like i flashed the custom kernel?
also, i was thinking about making a backup now with the M5 kernel and then flash the whole rom again with the stock kernel included and restore the backup but without the M5 kernel, but i dont seem to find an option in my recovery for such a custom restore, where do i deselect kernel restore? like i can in a stock firmware's ftf file through flashtool. is it possible??
side note, (but could be related) can i use 2 different kernel management apps? one for overclocking and wide range of governors and the other for various kernel tweaks?? it could be what is causing the incompatibility in the fist place i think.... too much battery drain and touch screen goes crazy or unresponsive and ghost clicks and stuff. and my wifi and nfc aren't working either, keeps saying turning on for wifi and nfc switches off immediately after turning on... any suggestions?
No suggestions?
Can you explain little bit more.

Sure thing mate! i flashed a custom kernel and now my phone is messing up, ghost clicks and stuff.. And i want to restore my AOSB roms own kernel, but without nandroid backup now i can only flash the entire rom again, which is what i want to avoid, so is there any way to extract kernel from a rom.zip file on the pc? Maybe something like boot.img and then i flash it so my AOSB kernel is restored?
And i don't think fauxclock and kernel tweaker are conflicting, as i deleted one and still everything is corrupted... So its definitely the M5 kernel that i flashed which is causing problems
And lastly i asked if i could somehow do a full rom nandroid backup NOW as i didn't do one before, but when restoring, i don't restore the M5 kernel, the rest everything gets restored, is there a way to do such a specific restore?
Please don't hesitate to ask anything you don't understand, I'm a noob and may have missed details

Ok, about first problem, give me link of rom/kernel which you are currently on your phone.
Second, you should go to backup in recovery and you should see which options you have to backup (to check or uncheck things you want/dont want to backup)... Currently i dont have recovery on my phone so i would lead you here blindly if i say anything else.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/development/rom-t2871309 this is the ROM and this is the custom kernel i flashed afterwards http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/development/kernel-m5-kernel-t2858912
Lol.. i actually already checked and it says no such option, i can only backup and restore the whole thing or none at all. so i think i need to do it on my pc, extract kernel from ROM.Zip and then put it on sd card and flash it like a custom kernel... if only someone knew which file is for the kernel and if it can be compiled in .Zip and then flashed.

This may be a newb-ish question, but I was wondering if it's possible and how to make a backup (including kernel) with odin. If not, how would one go about doing so? I have a very nice setup right now with a custom kernel and a heavily modified stock rom that I don't want to lose, but I also want to try out the voodoo lag fix with ext4.
EDIT: If this has been addressed somewhere else, please post a link for me. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Use ROMmanager is has option to backup ROM you can download from the market.
It save your backup image to your internal SD card.
It also comes with clockwork recovery.

My understanding is that rom manager does not backup the kernel. What I really want is a way to create a full backup of my entire phone, not just the rom and apps/settings/etc. It seems to me that odin should be capable of such functionality.
I heard once kernel is on it's on for good and independent of rom somehow.. so only way to get rid of kernel is by pushing it out with another- you should be fine with it, just back up your rom in clockwork

i missed that in your post but yea it doesnt back it up
This is great and all, but I really want a full system dump that I can flash back to my phone when those OH **** moments happen. Kernel and all. I just got odin working, and I really like the idea of being able to load up a full system backup and being back to where I am right now in a matter of minutes.

I don't know of anyway to do what you want to do. Best thing I could say is do a Nandroid back up, that would take care of everything but your kernal. If you screw something up just flash back to stock with odin, flash the rom you were using then restore with nandroid.
This is why questions get posted in the dev section. Devs (AKA the people who know this ****) don't read the q&a section.
Go post it in developer section just make note that you searched and tried asking in Q&A and got no answer.... so you dont get reamed

I can see asking just to have some learning experience with Odin but seriously dont see how backing up everything with Odin is any faster/better than nandroid.
For one restoring with Odin requires you to be hooked up to PC. Nandroid restore can be done from your phone with backup from internal SD card and it takes mins to restore. And you can store your favorite kernel .zip file on internal SD as well and takes like 5 secs to flash.
I rarely, if ever, find myself tinkering with roms and such unless I'm at my computer, and I do keep nandroid backups, but I like the idea of having a comprehensive backup that I can load up and flash quickly. I actually find flashing with odin to be substantially faster than nandroid.
I know we all get to messing around trying to add "cool new feature x" and next thing you know something is hosed. This, to me is why a custom odin backup would be ideal.
I think I will go ahead and ask in the dev section, but thank you guys for the suggestions. Like I said, any help is appreciated.
Hey guys,
Wanted to get a sure answer.
Whats the safest way to restore back to the stock firmware fro CM10 (or any rom in general).
There are two answers that i seem to have come across.
Answer 1:
Just download the stock firmware. Extract tar. Load onto PDA, check auto reset the flash reset and then start. Boom done! Everything reverts to stock, modem, firmware, kernel, etc.
Answer 2:
YOU MUST first flash stock kernel. So flash that first via odin then open odin again and flash the rom. If you don't flash the stock kernel first and then just flash the stock firmware, you'll have some issues.
As you can see, both are a bit contradicting. Whats the right method?
You missed one.
Make a nandroid of your stock ROM. then once you're done checking out CM or whatever else, just restore that. A lot less headache.

Yep, nandroid is much much faster. In fact I went to lunch today and restored my CM10 nandroid to show a friend. 10 minutes later I was back to my Samsung ROM. Its much easier than flashing stock, then re-rooting, then loading all your apps and data back on.
I had heard that nandroid restores between stock/CM9/CM10 were causing bugs, or something of the sort.
If it really is working that easily, I might have to give these CM9/CM10 builds a try. I just didn't want to play around with it for a bit and then be forced to set up my stock configuration all again, because I do have a need for a certain level of stability.
Edit: Ah, I was thinking of our Verizon version however. I think it might require an Odin flash back to stock, then you can restore a stock nandroid backup.
While I can't guarantee you won't have problems, I can say that I haven't had any issues while restoring nandroids.
*your experience may differ.

What version of CWM or TWRP is working fine for nandroid backup and restore, specially for Tmo version?

i rooted my x10 mini, flashed nAa kernel via flash tool & installed cyanogenmod.
i made a nandroid backup before that, now i want to go back to stock rom,so i clicked restore in recovery and restored it.
but now my phone is not turning on,
did the kernel change caused this issue
please anyone help me
I read somewhere that if you want to go to stock rom, you have to re-lock bootloader. Try to search for more about it.

The restore only restores the rom, not the kernel, and the stock rom won't run on a custom kernel.
You either need to get a stock kernel to flash with flashtool or repair your phone using SEUS or PC Companion
The Backup will still be available for restoring, if you figure out how to install CWM on the stock kernel/rom
And there is NEVER a need to relock the bootloader, unless you want to send it for repairs under warranty.
other problem
cheers everyone.
i have an other problem with my u20i.
i think i made very bad, crappy ****. =/
this term is correct for me too:

i must say- everything is more than fine. after something like 10 hrs i really like it and tought i should test some other customs too.
but now my problem:
like above is wrote: i have the backup. but what i doesnt minded is- i need to restore my contacts..
normally i would say- okay. i will ask in facebook or something like this- but i have/had somethin ´bout 300contacts.
i thought the google-acc will add all my contacts if i log in( it does as i´ve used an other android-phone some weeks ago[the owner got all my contacts in his contacts-.-]) so- it doesnt adding them for now.
is there any way to restore just the contacts? i know- i should backup them seperately- but its too late now..
i looked around to open the ".img" data, but i only can burn them to disk.
i really dont want to restore the stock rom too get the contacts and backing them up otherwise.
hope you understand what i´m talking about.
mean-language is german- so ask if something isnt clear.
thanks everyone

Maybe you've got Auto-synchronisation turned off, so it won't sync your phone with your google-account automatically.
If all your contacts are still on your google-account (check with your pc) then syncing (Settings-Accounts and Synchronisation-Synchronise) should get them back on your phone.
If that doesn't work, restore your previous backup and maybe export your contacts to sd-card, then flash back your new rom and import your contacts from sd-card (in the contacts application, press the menu button and choose import-export)
You could go into CWM - backup and restore and do an advanced restore, which will put back all the settings and data from your original rom, but not all that may be compatible with your new rom, so it might cause more problems than it solves.
Those are your options, as far as I'm aware.
There is a way to 'decompile' the data.img of your backup, if you've got an Android-kitchen, which is for developers, but that's quite complicated, and i wouldn't know where to look for the contact-details that are stored there.
Hey guys,
Quick question: when I make a backup in TWRP, does that also back up the kernel? I am thinking about flashing Perseus, since everybody seems to love it, however if I have battery life issues I will not stay for long.
So if I do a backup, flash Perseus, find out that I don't like it, and restore the backup I just made, will my current kernel be installed?
I just want to make sure I don't do anything permanent, or really hard to fix.

Yes. You could also just dirty flash your ROM to put your stock kernel back
Sent from my SCH-I605 (AKA NOTE 2)
yes, in fact you do not even have to do a full restore IIRC, you can restore only the kernel from your backup.
Hello everyone, I recently installed philZ cwm touch recovery and did backups and all that good stuff and I think Im ready to install cyanogenmod.
And before you ask, I cant use the cyanogenmod installer as it crashes every time I try to use it. I am going to try to flash cm10.1.3-i9100 which is the latest stable release, using cwm and not odin (I dont trust my usb cable). I was wondering since philz touch is just a stock kernal, do I need to flash a different one? I am running the original stock rom (jb 4.1.2) and have downloaded the cm10.1.x / android 4.2.2 google apps. I am just wondering if these are all the right files for my i9100? I thought it would be better to be safe, then coming back to the forums crying about how i messed it up (which I still might do if it does go bad) so thanks to all you smart people for helping in advance -Liam
Just flash it through Philz's recovery and that's all.Don't forget to do a nandroid backup.
Just in case

Iv done 2 backups (one on the external, one on the internal just to be sure) but I was wondering if I have all the right files, like if my kernal is good to go, whether the google apps are the right ones (although I'm pretty sure they're the right ones for cm10.1.3) and whether or not I am forgetting something, thanks. Sorry if I wasn't clear in my post, like I said I just want to be sure
Kernel is not important in this case. All you need is a proper recovery, which you already have.Just make sure the rom is for i9100,+compatible gapps and that's pretty much all.Don't forget to do all needed wipes and make a backup of your EFS in Philz's CWM before flashing.
