Anyone RMA'd one with dodgy buttons? - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm thinking about calling Google and seeing if I can get a swap for my tablet, the volume up button on mine seems to be getting lower and lower into the housing.
Anyone done this? I might try and it and see what they say?

If you got it from Google they'll be cool about it. Their customer service is great.

Yeah I got it from Google.
Will they send a new one then I can send the old one back, so I won't be without a tablet?

That's usually what they do. If you're not happy with what you got give them a call

OK, I have just called Google and they are organizing a replacement for me.
I think I know the answer to this already, but.....if I install TWRP and do a full backup, I will be able to transfer that backup to my new device and have it exactly like I have this one, yes?
I will then factory reset and flash factory images on my old one before sending back to google!

Did the cat purr?

The buttons do suck no doubt about it, but I don't think it's a reason to send it in.

Return is pretty good with Amazon Prime. RMAd 2 of my tablets. One came back yesterday with the same flush buttons and one today with only Power Button improved. Volume up is still flush... I guess I'll wait for couple of more weeks before trying it again.
I'm still very mad at HTC and Google for this

My volume up button is becoming difficult to press as its almost flush.
I'm hoping since the 32gb white is out of stock on Google play at the moment, I will get a newer build!

I mentioned light bleed to the cat and that is covered under their rma.
I really want the lte model so I'll just wait it out until those ship...

My replacement just shipped - Serial number indicates that it was made on 16/10.

Warranty doesn't cover crack by speaker?

So I called hp on Saturday, and told him about the crack by my speaker which is due to faulty designs I guess. And he told me hp changed the warranty and they no longer cover this? Is this true? He told me it would cost around $300 to fix! Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

Thank you, I figured he was lying. I asked to speak to a supervisor and told me one was not there. I'm gonna give it another go.

I have had two repaired in the last six weeks for exactly that problem under the HP warranty. If they give you any more s××t .PM me and I will give the repair # ,copy of confirmation emails and the repair statement that I received on there return.
i would suggest not sending it in unless it is very bad. i've read that there is a good chance you wont get the same device back. for example, they'll accept your touchpad, pull one from the refurb pile, and send that to you instead. the other devices may or may not be worse (with other problems) than the one you sent in to fix.

The two that I sent back were picked up and returned in 1 week repaired with new back covers and were definitely not refurb's . Although one that may have had a beer spilt over it and was not repairable was replaced with a refurb that I have never had a problem with .
So don't believe everything you read .
maybe it depends on where you are located. i'm in america and have read lots of horror stories, maybe things are different/better in the uk
here are some fine examples of previous experiences i've read about:

http://forums.webosnation.com/hp-touchpad/312515-warrantee-experience.html
i'd really only consider sending it in if it was something that i could not tolerate.
Thanks to both you guys, and it's not really that bad, but my warranty is about to run out. That's why I was thinking of sending it in. I'll call them tomorrow morning and see what happens. I'll let you guys know, and once again, thanks a million!

As I said I haven't had any problems with mine, and what I would say I in my personal experience is once they start it doesn't get better, ie with mine I had a very small crack by one speaker and three months later it turned into 3 both speaker's and by the USB jack. My daughters only had one but that was sent back straight away.
Anyway good luck and if you need proof that they do cover it don't hesitate to pm me .
Don't forget to wipe!

We sent ours in because we are at the end of our warranty too. Just don't ever mention Android OS:
Make a backup
Copy it off to your PC along with anything else of value
ACMEuninstall
webOS security wipe, to remove all traces of warranty revoking un-authorized software.
Like that was the cause of your cracks. If you let your warranty run out, your out of luck. Then it doesn't matter, save the $300 and get a tablet with native JB!
Called hp and again a no go. They guy said they stopped covering the crack about two months ago. Am I out of luck here? And check your pm sstar

I got arranged an RMA on mine on mid July, finally picked up the start of August and then got it back around the 19th August. IT came back messed up, they replaced the back (yay), however it can't pick up a wifi signal unless you're within 1m of the router (I tested with 3 routers and WebOS and Android), you can't even use WebOS without a wifi connection, anyway I presume some idiot at HP/Palm forgot to connect the wifi antenna, not sure what else they did, but it crashed in WebOS settings and it sometimes failed to start up showing a battery with a question mark.
It was finally collected yesterday so coming up on two months since this mess started, and not sure how long it will take to be fixed, they said 10 days but it took two weeks last time, but I know that HP have now outsourced it in the UK at least and they don't have spare parts and can't order them, just get random shipments and you have to hope the part comes or you have to keep waiting.
So different to my case replacement last October which took about 10 days in total. No wonder HP had to pull out the market, I also emailed the CEO's of HP UK and then after no reply CEO of HP USA after I got an unusable touchpad sent back after a month, neither even bothered to reply, not even a scripted thanks for your email. Really bad service in my opinion.
I have speaker cracks and my warranty is up next week. I'm just gonna use a drop a super glue and call it a day.

I would contact Palm using the live chat. They helped me out when I got my first Touchpad which the screen wasn't sitting correctly in the housing. Also the home button LED did not properly light the button. I guess that is what happens when you get a Touchpad from the last batch.

Got it back after 6 days, all they'd done was ran WebOS Doctor on it and sent it back, not fixed anything so still broken and I have to send it off AGAIN. Idiots.
Got it back again today, still not fixed, all they did was another software update, they're claiming wifi works.
It get's lowest signal within metres of the router (I tried 3 routers), when before I sent it off to get the cracks fixed it would get full signal on different floors of the house. For comparrison my laptop next to my touchpad has my network on full signal, and 4 others on medium signal, the touchpad is just mine on low (3m from the router).
They told me to send it back again (4th time) and keep hoping someone will fix it, will be writing a letter to HP UK HQ over the weekend and failing that I think it will have to be legal action.

Advice on RMA

I've been reading through the RMA pieces and they are long and really don't end with good notes, but does anybody know of an escalation process for the Texas RMA center? I'm on my second go around with them after having the tablet since Feb where now I can't use it for more than 30 minutes without it locking up and / or rebooting and once it starts, it gets progressively worse until it just locks up and reboots at the first boot screen. It's happened both times with the tech support (so they even said it's not working right) even trying to go into the boot loader and doing a reset there and freezing up before I can even navigate over to do it).
Needless to say, the repair status is, "Product repair is in progress.-[WF9] Wait for Customer Confirmation-No Trouble Found". They haven't contacted me yet and really the trouble was found / seen by the tech on the phone. I use it for work non-stop (well, when I have it, back to pen and pencil now and explaining why I'm without it yet again) so I really need it fixed. Anybody have a way to escalate it? I really want it back and working. I loved it when it worked but now I feel that I was sold a defective product and they really don't have a repair department above if something is physically cracked.

Where did you purchase your Prime from? I might consider talking to the retailer, particularly if it was Amazon. I would explain to them the details of your situation and ask if they can do an exchange. You'd be happy to exchange this one for a working one, right?
I'm reasonably happy with my Prime. The features make Apple's product look like a toy. The post-sale support from ASUS, on the other hand, is absolutely horrible! After losing a couple of rubber feet on my dock, I sent a support REQ asking if I could get a set of rubber feet. They wanted me to do an RMA.
It's worth a try, asking your retailer...

Email Hai ([email protected]) he is the technical manager that was listed as a contact on the forums by Gary Key. He is not in Texas, he is in California however I worked with him on 3 separate RMA's for my prime and the guy is great. If you email him with the RMA number I am sure he can offer some assistance.
Hope this helps.
For anyone who has sent their prime in for RMA: do you recommend removing a screen protector before sending it? Will ASUS likely take it off? I have a Skinomi, and could probably get a new one under the lifetime warranty they have (if I have to take it off and it accidentally gets damaged), but if I can leave it on that would be ideal.
Thanks.

I wouldn't use a protector on prime in first place, it has gorilla glass but that's me . It all depends what are they fixing. The cpu or dock? If cpu, take it off and save it.

I sent mine in and got it back fine. Took just about 2 weeks total turn around. I took a bunch of photos of me packing it to prove it was packed. I sent NOTHING but the tablet. Nothing. No case, no SD card, no charger, no GPS dongle, no screen saver, no nothing.
But now, I am over this tablet and seriously don't even use it. Going to likely sell it.

I'm actually sending it in to see if I can get the camera fixed under warranty (even though I'm unlocked...fingers crossed). Then I am probably going to sell it. I figure I'd have better luck selling it with a working camera, so worth a shot to see if they'll fix it.

In case anyone cares, I have some good news for anyone considering an RMA for the camera. Just got mine back after sending it in, and upon first inspection it looks like 1) they replaced the camera module (works now!), and 2) I am still unlocked! I'll report back after trying to install Hairy Wookie Bean (or whatever it's called these days).

"the good one hunting"

This thread is not for you,if you already have a good one.
This is for who love this tablet and are trying hard to find a good one...
Most of us here, has went through 2 or 3 tablet and still has LIGHT BLEED,DEAD PIXEL and YELLOWISH COLOR etc....
Just went to my local Staples and bought 4 unit, not open yet ,already return 3 device to GOOGLE base on the same problem.
Hope the one from staple will be the GOOD ONE...
If the 4 tablet is not good, i am still going to pursue the hunt for a good one...

I feel lucky that I only have a dark shading near my camera and some weird buzzing coming from the back lol.... Tablet hasn't reset on me yet!
Waiting 3 to 5 business day for Samsung to call me back with the service request. I bought it at Walmart, and no other Walmart near me has had it in stock since I bought it. If they have it in stock before Samsung calls me back, I may try exchanging it there instead. But I'm going to demand Samsung checks the replacement screen and checks again!
You can also wait until the second batch comes out and return it to Google then.

Just called Google and their going to cross-ship a unit to me, at least that's how it sounded like. Needs a credit card and everything which is fine for me
I personally prefer this over anything else as I can inspect my replacement unit and it ensures I get a completely different unit.

When returning my One it booted into TWRP o_0

I had to return my first HTC One for exchange because of dead pixels. I was working with a rep at AT&T and I had to restore my phone and my phone booted into TWRP right in front of him and I know he saw. I'm so glad those guys are clueless. Just thought i'd share, if you were worried that they wont accept it back if your unlocked the bootloader you have nothing to worry about. He had no idea that it was not the way it was suppose to work. He was more curious that I gave up the S4 for the HTC One.
Now I wouldnt recommend taking a chance so just restore before you go
Most reps don't have a clue.. But come to my store and let that happen I'll over look it because I'm all for having unlocked bootloader and s-off... It's the douche bags that try and lie to me about how there phones got bricked that don't like me

I return an iPhone 4S once that was jail broke with a theme on it because the headphone port was not working. Had I know he was going to actually look in the "About" section of the phone, I never would have left the theme on it. He didn't even care, we started talking about jail break stuff etc.. etc..
I've met quite a few people in my dealings as a AT&T corporate employee over the last 14 years that are far from clueless. I had a guy promoting rooting my Galaxy S2 for a multitude of reasons right in front of my buddy who happens to be my boss, and in charge of enterprise sales, right in the AT&T store.

whats funny is the "sneaky" ones lol attempting top tell me they have no idea how it happened IE a custom rom was flashed lol
I have actually been told by an AT&T support rep to root my phone and install a custom rom to help improve my phone. This was with an HTC Inspire back in the day but I just about died. A support rep, on the phone, told me the best way to fix my phone was to root it and install a custom rom. Still makes me chuckle.

Honestly, I don't think most of them even care. Like when I traded in my s3 for an s4 Paranoid Android was installed and he just did a factory reset and put the phone away before it could even boot back up. Same thing happened with my Atrix, GNex, and Skyrocket these past couple years at Best Buy.
I just sent my first One back to AT&T with TWRP on it. Keeping my fingers crossed they don't notice before I get my refund. I currently have $1400 tied up in these phones since I paid full price, so I really, really, REALLY hope they don't catch it. I did flash a stock ROM and unrooted it, and sent it back powered on with a full charge so hopefully they will just take a quick glance at it and refund me my $700. My new MacBook Pro that I plan to buy this weekend is riding on it :good:

I'm 99% positive that it wasn't enabled. I think it's disabled by default and I didn't turn it on. How would that affect it though? I don't think they are gonna go over it with a fine tooth comb, they are probably just gonna inspect it for physical damage and call it a day.
Or so I hope.

It was always enabled for me by default. When it is disabled on boot it will display red letters showing that it has been tampered. Either way you should be fine, unless the employees know about HTC they won't have a clue what that means.

Well my current one is still just stock rooted, and fastboot isn't enabled. I haven't touched it which is why I'm assuming it's disabled by default. I'm really not that nervous about it, even if they catch it and try to pull some grap, I am very good at arguing. I'll get my money back.

I wouldn't worry either but I have had 3 HTC Ones and every one of them had fastboot enabled on first boot. When you try to install recovery one of the steps are to disable it so maybe that is why it was disabled. If not they will give you the info because they will reimage anyways
That would definitely explain why I had to use adb to boot into recovery the first time after installing TWRP. Man I'm rusty lol.
I know at my store I'm the only one that understands how to get in the fastest menu and I'm sure most stores don't check that deep lol

Really? I tried to return my HTC One X a few weeks back due to a hardware issue with the handset speaker and they wouldn't take it because it was tampered. =/ The guy even asked his supervisor if they could take it because it wasn't bricked and was in perfect working condition with the exception of the handset speaker.
On the bright side I got the One because they wouldn't replace my One X. Lol. =]

AHHHH!!!! FLIPIN' Huawei

I FINALLY get my RMA'd phone back after they FORGOT to add my suite number so it got delayed, I went to set it up, and NOW the fingerprint sensor doesn't work!!

Already did twice
AND RMA #2.................Just waiting for the shipping label
This is what you get when you buy a device from a company like these. Why do you think people spend more to own a Samsung or apple
AAAAND still waiting for a freakin shipping label!!

I would recommend boycotting Huawei. Even if you get it fixed, there is a 100% guarantee that the phone will fail at some point with bootloop issue (usually within 2, years of manufacturing date).

Sorry to hear, I cracked my Nexus 6 and sent it to Moto for warranty and when I got the replacement, wireless charging didn't work. I ended up keeping it and down the road, after cracking the screen I decided I'd try and call Moto & do it again but when I called they said the warranty had just ended and I would have to pay full price for their or another phone. If I could go it again I would have sent it right back. I had three of the Nexus 6's not including the warranty exchange. Nice phone & wish I still had.
**UPDATE** Got my 3rd 6P today, so far so good, fingerprint works, camera works, calling works. When I get home, I will unlock the bootloader, but other than that, I'm not sure if I want to root or not.
OP. I bought a second hand 6p and I am about to swap the battery and do a black body swap. A brand new unopened dbrand came with the phone I got. I’m not gonna use it so if you want it it’s yours just pm me your info. It’s the white marble back setup. I’m not into bumpers so I can throw in the rhino shield too if you want.lmk

Sounds good, but I think I may be sending this one back too My first full day of usage (Sat) I only got about 7 hrs, and when it got to 30% it shut off on me.

Yeah, at this time, I'm about to just give up on Huawei and get maybe the LG V20, (that's about what I can afford) send back the 6P then sell it
Huawei is crap, Ican't believe people on here actually recommend people buy this phone on here :/ I could never get them to warranty the phone, could hardly even talk to anyone.

I didn't attempt to call them via phone, but what I did was contact them via email, and all I received was robotic messages. Same message over and over. Pathetic.

There was an article about how they will overtake apple on here. Good luck with that one, they wouldn't stay at the top long with their poor quality control and terrible customer service.
Wow, sorry to hear OP. I keep hearing terrible stories about their customer service.
