Hey everyone!
So I bought this HTC one m8 on ebay as "factory refurbished" only to find that it had been tampered and unlocked! So every time I open the "people" app (contacts) it crashes immediately. Also, the camera won't show the pictures I've taken to the gallery. It's like every photo I take doesn't get saved. If anyone could help me fix this I would greatly appreciate it.
I discovered Team Win Recovery Project v2.7.0.2 is on the phone. I don't know what that is, how it works, or what it's supposed to do. I'm completely lost and I just want my phone to operate correctly! Can anyone help?
Team win recovery project aka twrp is a custom recovery used by a lot of people on the M8. I would suggest researching how to go back to stock and unrooting the phone if you want a stock M8. If you want to play around with it, then I would suggest getting a custom ROM such as Viper One or SkyDragon.
BE VERY CAREFUL!
You can brick your phone if you don't completely understand what you are doing and if you don't follow directions exactly. And it will be no ones fault but your own.
That being said I've had a lot of fun experimenting and learning. Mostly I've learned by reading the threads and listening to these folks.
Heck if a redneck can do it anyone can.

What are you using for your email client? I've used Lotus Notes Traveler (i know, yuck - no choice) on Liberty, Eclipse and Molten and haven't had a problem with any of them. The initial sync may take awhile depending on how large your inbox is and such. With Traveler, at least, it does some sort of authentication with the first sync and will report connection errors until it makes it through the first time. I had to wait forever until i decided to do some housekeeping in my inbox (long overdue) and tell it to sync only 1-weeks worth of history...
well i got with my IT guy from a different state and we are able to figure it out, had to get some file out of the way dont remember exactly how it was blocking it but he also roots and roms his phones so knew generally what was going on. i do appreciate the insight for sure, thats why i cam here was to find some insightfulness before actually having to tell the IT guy i was messing around haha, but gladly he was understandable telling me he's almost bricked numerous phone by always trying new stuff. i really wish i knew what we deleted so that way i could post it on here, and see if it would help anyone else or so the dev's could take a peek, maybe was my phone but i know i did full wipe before flashing so kind of hard to say, but again thanks i know noobs will be noobs but i also know forums and how to look before asking! im on overclock.net and such for pc and understand the aspects of what to ask and where! haha
Im rooted running Eclipse 1.3 and I have no problems with my corporate email... we do have our own exchange server here in IT so that may be a difference... I can even wipe my entire phone from my web accessed exchange email.....

As an IT guy myself, i think screwing around with technology is in our blood. You should ask him, see if he remembers, i would also be interested in knowing what your actual issue was. I had problems that seemed to surface at one point with the Blur email, it wouldn't authenticate. It seemed to work for a while but one day... It never seemed to be an issue with eclipse however because I could set additional parameters that allowed for security etc.
I have a verizon wireless htc rezound. I was trying to use my at&t sim card in it attempting to unlock it( first time dealing with android). and figured out i got service but was not able to send sms. after searching i realized it wasnt just me. I have heard of the custom rom venasaur that fixed the sms problem. I am completely new to this and would really appreciate help installing this rom or fixing this problem? I dont know if i need to root it if i need an sd card i am pretty clueless at this point ?
How is this urgent?
Only put urgent in the title if you think you have bricked or something like that.
Start here and read the entire thread, take notes:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=
If Venasaur ROM will fix your issue, then yes, you need root to flash it. You should really read about all of this for at least a week before doing anything to your phone or else you can easily cause irreparable harm or at least end up needing a lot of help to get it running again.
Take a bunch of notes about what commands do what, what order you do things in, etc... while you read so you can look that stuff up easily in one place. There's a lot to digest and absorb and you should have a decent understanding of things before you get started.
Hello all, I have been inactive here for sometime. But I've always known this is the place I would come to figure out all my smartphone issues and desires. I know that many are against someone out right asking for help before exhausting all measure of researching their dilemma. But I am afraid of not having the time to do the proper research and necessary gathering of understanding to take the right steps to remedying my problem being that I must get my phone working properly today or I will have to revert to my out dated phone that I still have, at least temporarily.
So I say all that, to point out that I understand those that chose to ignore this topic and move on, but to those that take interest, I thank you and I ask you to forgive me for the amateur approach to seeking help here.
I do have my phones setup on my profile, as I have for sometime.. so that should help to simplify any questions you have of what I have and how it's setup. I periodically have to Fix Permissions on my phone to resolve some issues that arise from time to time. Lately I've noticed my phone is flat out locking up more and more, so I've been intending to change my rom for fear that my phone is just too mucked up to resolve as I have been. Unfortunately, work has been extremely busy and with the newborn we have, my home life is just spent.
Anyhow, I want to merely reset my phone from the custom Charmeleon ROM that is currently on here to just the stock ROM for my phone, without unrooting. But I'm so rusty on the proper way of approaching it. I want to try this before I simply unroot my phone to if I have to take it to sprint to use my insurance to get a new phone. I suppose I could just tell em I lost it, ad need to replace my phone with the $200.00 insurance deductible. I'm pretty sure they cover misplacing them. I will say there is some slight physical damage to my phone from sitting on it for a second one time in my back pocket. It's very slight but its a little bent lol.. I know being small electronics mechanic for the Army, this is not helping but being that it's worked fine for the most part I've hoped this was not contributing, atleast directly to my issue.
I'm sure more info is needed for anyone willing to help me, but I'm going to stop now.. Please let me know what else you need to know if you do.
And again, thank you so very much for helping me and for ignoring my ignorance.
Here is a stock rooted ROM based off the latest OTA update:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2211138
Download the ROM to your phone and put it in the root directory of either your internal or external storage. Boot your phone into recovery and make a backup of your current setup. Once the backup completes, do a factory reset & system wipe in recovery, then flash the ROM. Follow the directions in the OP of the ROM thread above otherwise.

Hey everyone,
So I'm pretty new to the weird and wonderful world of rooting and custom ROMs, and as part of my research I just wanted to learn about the most common ways to completely ruin your phone. So bring on the horror stories!

Don't drop it in the toilet when your texting in the washroom.
Check the pockets of the clothes you are washing.....I lost many gameboy games that way when i was a child
And dont update with low battery and dont turn off the phone during an update/flashing a rom
Be patient. Seriously. I remember the first time I was backing up in recovery I got frustrated and terrified that I messed something up after 2 minutes, and shut off the phone. Thankfully this was just during a backup, but I've heard plenty of brick stories of the "I don't think anything's happening after __ time, I'll just kill it it."
Also, READING IS FUNDAMENTAL. There are often silly nuances of your phone giving you some type of message and your left to pick a command. Often every other install sees the same message, and it isn't necessarily true that the right option looks like the right option.
Read and be patient.
Back everything up as you go. It's easy and quick and can save you loads of time and effort if something goes wrong. In my experience, when following instructions and proceeding carefully it's difficult to brick your device.

I like to get drunk and flash stuff on the weekends though!
You know what I do when I buy a video game? If you guessed read the instructions then play the game, you're dead wrong! I jump right in and start killing stuff!
Anyways, my point is, sometimes I'll just miss a step, or not pay attention, and was wondering is it easy to get out of a jam like that? I've never worked Odin, but have some adb experience. Can I just Odin back to the stock image and restore a nandroid after I get a recovery back on it?

Moral of the story is: Backup backup backup
Do not flash anything not specifically for your model and carrier unless VERY specific instructions are given by someone who succeeded

As the title states I need to know if Logcat can or will show me all recent behaviour and actions? Can it do it if the phone has been flashed back to stock?
I ask because I watched my partners phone going a bit erratic to say the least.
All sorts of things were being opened in front of us with no one touching the phone. Messages were being put to us on the screen, files were deleted, files altered.
Photo's were altered, favourites altered.
Had I not seen this with my own eyes then I would have found it hard to believe, but with personal details, bank details, photo's, addresses etc being on phone and looking compromised I would like to get to the bottom of this quickly and by any means possible.
As much as I know about ROM cards, Nagraedit etc this is a field I know nothing about although a friend told me that it's not normally done to this scale.
If Logcat can't help me could someone give me any suggestions as to how I may track the activity, cause, source etc?
All security apps that have been run find nothing! One app was classed as dodgy and was promptly deleted but there are still some things vanishing. By vanishing I mean we have a look then exit only to see they have been removed. Some time later they seem to be put back in. Some things marked as favourite are unchecked as we look at the screen yet we have touched nothing.
As crazy as it may sound it has happened and I want to eliminate all possibilities as this happened few days after flashing with ROM & kernel.
Failing this then the phone may be sent off for analysis of some sort or sold and replaced.
Thanks in advance and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just to update the post, All photo's were deleted from the sd card as well as various other folders and all personal stuff has gone!
Yes there are options available to retrieve them and I have the programs to do but it still doesn't take away the fact the some thieving scrote thinks it's good to play games by installing sh*t on his ROM to hack into phones, then steal whatever they want!.
Feels like we have been burgled!
Three ROMS were flashed in the week leading up to this, therefore that narrows the possibilities.
That and the fact that that a similar thing happened and the person on the other end was showing content from this site.
One ROM already ruled out and behaviour of another is casting doubt due to behaviour of the smiling balloon which seemed to become an app that was being downloaded, then reappear making out it was a recycle bin.
Just hope the trail leads to the clown responsible and not a goose chase
Now, not all developers are crooked or loading their ROM'S with stuff but regardless of who makes it, who praises it, who loves it and swears by it, who kang'd it etc I would strongly urge people to upgrade or buy a phone instead of rooting, popping this ROM and or ROM in.

What I would do is to flash a full stock ROM via Odin. Not an ordinary one, but a 3 part one (you can access it through a link in my signature). We are talking about an i9100 right? Not an i9100M/G etc? That 3- part stock firmware will wipe the device as it flashes. Then, don't install any apps after you've flashed. If nothing happens, great, put all your apps back on and see what happens.
Also, what ROMs have you flashed recently? And where did you download them from? I'd easily be over 50 ROM flashes and have never encountered any issues such as that. So have many thousands of others here on XDA.
And, what on earth do you mean with this bit:

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I used ROM'S from here but think it would be wrong to name them at this point till I get more info. The Mrs has had one or two from other places she now tells me , but there was no inappropriate behaviour before or after these. And any steps I have taken to install for her, I have obtained from XDA. All were Jelly Bean based and either 4.2.2 or 4.3.
Yes it's I9100 although it's I9100P. The variant hasn't had any effect in my opinion and have always flashed to stock then went through the usual steps of erase, wipe, format, mount etc.
There was once some nonsense from another superuser app, well not so much the app but one of the components which started zipping up stuff etc. That was eradicated immediately, and was several weeks prior to this carry on starting. For the life of me I can't remember the name of it but know I had used it before with no trouble whatsoever so did find that odd to say the least..
She had mentioned it before but I thought yeah okay, had I not seen it with my own eyes I wouldn't have believed her to be honest.
The content that was being shown from here was like watching someone scanning over a sheet of paper with a handheld scanner, only watching it on the phone. Sorry - can't think of any other way to describe it and the phone was just going to various sections on XDA - all to do with Jelly Bean. The Mrs assumed it was the dev from this other super user app pointing her in the right direction for Jelly Bean etc.
I recognised some of the content as I had in fact read them myself and went to the same pages on comp to show her but was expecting this message will self destruct in 5 seconds to come on screen and Mission Impossible music to start.
The behaviour in the latter stages was outrageous and somewhat audacious, but that's another story.
Just wanna trace it and sort it out and in one sense it's a lesson learned for her lol cos my phone is running just sweet lol.
