I just downgraded my phone to VRUFNC5 to get root (thanks to peeps on here), but I cannot seem to find a way to install a working recovery. Does this have something to do with the bootloader being locked or something? If so, what can you do? I am bashing my head against the wall for taking OTA's. Maybe I need a new phone??? Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

No custom recovery for us and hence, no custom kernels or pure AOSP roms. We are limited to using Safestrap and Safestrap compatible roms.

3.72 if you don't need a custom slot. 3.75 a03 if you do. 3.72 does not support custom slots so you have to flash in the "stock" partition but it is a bit more stable than 3.75. 3.75 is fine but is a little buggy. Nothing that should stop you from using it though.

You will need some kind of root file explorer, I use ES File Explorer. If I remember correctly it's under device/system/priv-app. Or you could use titanium backup and freeze or delete it.

Been reading various threads and wondering if there is a preferred method for rooting S4. If so, is it based on ability the unroot it later? I am a noob to phone rooting...having only (but successfully) rooted my Nook Tablet a long time ago. I want to make sure I choose the "best practice" method to minimize my risk of borking it. I am on verizon and have
SCH-1545
Build: JDQ39.1545VRUAME7
As for the specifics, is it assumed once I format the SD card to exfat that it runs from and remains in the phone itself or can it be repurposed?

This is for root. With ME7 you can not use a custom recovery just as a FYI. But safestrap recovery works with ME7. You can find that also in the android Dev section.

Each firmware version has its own method, and theres only 1 for each. Since your on me7 you have to use the .pwn method and once your rooted you can reformat your card/delete the files that were used.

I have also noticed a number of people wanting to go back to stock. Is this because root is unstable or has issues? Is there a pretty foolproof method for going back (my phone is only 3 months into my renewed VZ contract so unlike my Nook, I may need support at some point)

That root method is for Verizon S4 on ME7 firmware. If that is not you then I would not try it myself.
Could qualify as the dumb question of the day, but I have Build: JDQ39.1545VRUAME7...is this considered ME7 or are there different flavors?

With the MK2 build you can only use safestrap as your custom recovery and your limited on what custom roms you can use. I'm on the MK2 build as well and personally I like the stock rom with the tether mod.

Okay Buddy with the MK2 builld you can only use TW based roms no ASOP/Cyanogenmod.
1.) To root u must use saferoot here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
2.) Then you must install Safestrap 3.71 Hashcode has a thread about ithere: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441441
3.) After doing that you want to look on this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2630040
decarturbob has compiled a list of MK2 Safestrap Compatible roms.
Hope this helps buddy. Make sure you read the threads carefully and follow each step. My current fav roms are the TW(ASOP themed roms):fingers-crossed:
Thank you all for the help. Really appreciate it.
To add to my question, after rooting, running the stock ROM, can I turn off OTA updates? I keep getting an annoying notification to update.

Using Titanium Backup, you can "freeze" applications, which keeps them from running. The software update application is called SDM.
So, open Titanium, search for "SDM", the click on "Freeze!". It won't run any longer.

You flash the modules file AFTER you flash a custom ROM into a ROM slot. How did you manage to flash into a ROM slot if you can't get into Safestrap recovery?
If installing Safestrap fails and tells you you're not rooted, then either you're not rooted, or you still have Knox enabled. You'll need to be rooted before you can do any of this, so start there. See the Saferoot thread.

You'll have to now find the SafeStrap thread and install that. Hopefully your attempt at flashing a recovery through Goo hasn't borked your recovery. IMG
If it has you'll have to just start over with Odin. Hard to say really as some have had no problems after doing that and others have had to use Odin.
On a side note I'll be posting my mint condition MDK S4 on Swappa fairly soon if you want an S4 that can have a true custom recovery and flash aosp Roms [emoji6]

Correct. Your only option is Safestrap recovery. You can only flash TouchWiz based roms. You will need Safestrap version 3.72 (it's the AT&T version), and you will only be able to use the stock side. No rom slots.
Take your time and research....... A lot! You don't want to brick your phone.

Selinux is a kernel security module. You can change it to permissive using selinux mode changer from the play store.
You install busybox before installing safestrap. It's in the play store.
You can use 3.72 or 3.75, the differences are mostly just s5 compatibility changes.
I bought an s4 last week and am waiting for it to come. Before I read this thread and kimu's thread on customizing, I had made up my mind to just get rid of it and keep my s3. Most of the "instructional" threads on rooting and recovery have left out steps in the process, leaving many rooters, particularly the less talented ones like me, in trouble. But it looks like this thread, particularly joshm1219 have filled the holes and courteously and patiently answered all questions. So I will wait for my s4 and hopefully root it without problems. I don't even know at this point what build it is!
It really pays to read! a lot!
