Various Gingerbread ROMs reviewed
Hi Friends, this thread is aimed at all the newbies who want to know which ROM to use and the specialty of each ROM. I myself have tried all the ROMs mentioned here but many people find it difficult to find the perfect ROM for themselves from this vast ocean of ROMs available. Please note this list does not contain names of all the ROMS available. It contains only the ones tried by me. So please go through this thread, you might find it useful. Further, the comments below are based on my own experience. The reviews are not intended to make fun, complain or demotivate anyone. Just a frank opinion from me for further development.
Scoring System
Scores are given on the following basis:
2 points for Internal memory
2 points for Theme and Look
1 point for performance
Please do not be shocked to see the less weight given to performance as almost all ROMs here are high on performance with more or less same performances. Further these scores are as per my liking and not as per user comments. Also DO NOT blindly follow the score. You may have a different view from mine.
Stock Based ROMs:
SGS III v12 by Spacecaker
Well, this Rom is not actually new, It recieved an update a few days back and hence I come to edit the review. No change in performance as compared to previous version (+0.5), minor changes in UI, bringing in a smoother feel and some resized images (+1.5). A very good Rom most people would swear by it. For internal memory one can expect 125MB (approx) (+1.0). One of the best in terms of battery life (my useage is heavy, 3hrs of wi-fi browsing and 2hrs talk on 2G. The battery lasts for 1 day 10 hrs. Performance is good but nothing to write home about. Also after installing few apps and a few days use the ROM showed some lags. My score (3/5). Otherwise a very good ROM for daily use.
S'Periance Final by Ver3go
Now this is one of the most popular ROMs out there. Smooth, fast, light weight & barebones. All what anybody would want out of a ROM (+1) for performance and (+1) for look as it is simple holo. Internal memory around 130MB (+1.0). Avg RAM consumption is awesome. But the ROM lags a bit behind in terms of battery life as compared to other ROMs tried by me. Again in terms of Battery Life every user has a different experience.Score(3/5). For more info, visit the development thread.
StockRom Evolution by G.Galante
Now this is the ROM which I cannot do without. Awesome speed, superb performance, light weight, modded UI, 14 toggles and a lot more(+ 0.75). The theme is basic but a bit more appealing than stock (+0.5). The internal memory you can get is around 130MB (+1.0). Battery life is similar to the ROM by Spacecaker and average RAM consumption is also very less but a bit higher than StockLite though. Yes this also gets a bit laggy after installing few apps but the best part is that apps dont take time at all to launch. My Score (2.25/5).
StockLite V8 by tj_droid
A ROM which once created a rage amongst users. This ROM is very light, stable and fast ROM. The final version of this ROM has been released and it won't get any more updates. Using this ROM for few days, found battery life great. Gives me 1d 10 hrs useage. Performance is also superb, absolutely no lags and no force closes (+1). However the look is completely stock (+0.25). The apps too open up quickly. Also got a lot of internal Memory free (121MB) which is not the highest I'm getting among the Roms mentioned here (+1). It is the fastest booting ROM as I noticed, but again the major minus point I found was with the toggles mod. But still a good ROM for daily use. This is my Score (2.25/5).
M'Rage by MatZ69
Ok, just flashed this ROM. It is highly themed and very fresh to look at. The best part it such highly themed ROMs are generally CM7 based but this ROM offers the stability of stock ROM (+2). The UI is refreshing & attractive. Although the RAM useage is a bit high, without installing any apps the useage was 170MB. After clearing RAM the usage goes down to 111mb which is again a bit high. Internal storage is awesome as you get 147MB for yourself (+2). Tested the ROM the whole day and I guess I don't need to wait more to draw a conclusion. The performance is a bit on the low side as it gets slow n laggy after installing a few apps and heavy use (+0). But given the UI and the modification options it can be a very good ROM for people who only need the phone to call and message with light useage. Score (4/5).
Touchwiz UX 5.0 by Nathan
Flashed this Rom for a second go, found it a bit incomplete in the first attempt, maybe was not flashed properly. Well, the Rom is Nicely themed to match the Name given to it. The launcher is of the modified Holo launcher variety and is smooth with a lot of transition and customization options(+1.5). There is also the Accuweather widget. However, during initial usage performed well, giving an Internal memory of 113MB, which I found to be the lowest among all Rom's mentioned here(+0.5). The Rom is pretty smooth until some actually heavy apps are thrown in. After installing 20 apps(all moved to ext partition), the Rom showed BIG LAGS and all the excitement of the first use was drowned(+0.5). Battery life is again what one can expect out of BE Kernel (1d some hrs on average useage). However, people wanting a fresh S4 look may give this ROM a go but remember not to stuff it up with apps. Thus this ROM scores (3/5).
JellyBean Revolution Light V3 by Kranti
A nice stock Rom hiding there. The ROM gave me an internal memory of 141 mb on first install which was very good and second only to M'Rage Rom(+1.5). The ROM is Xperia themed and is very good as the Xperia launcher provides a lot of customization options(+1). Performance wise it is quite good apart from occasional lag while opening big apps. However no lag on Launcher(+1). Battery wise same as any other stock ROM with BE kernel. However the modem drivers were a bit annoying. Wi-Fi shows error sometimes and bluetooth headset was not being able to connect. But this can be sorted out by changing the modem drivers. On the whole, a good package. I give a total of (3.5/5) for this ROM.
CM7 based ROMs:
The Ultimatum by The 'A' Factor
Now this is the most stable CM7 based ROM I found. It contains many features. The ROM has just recieved its final update. Aroma Installer helps customization and choose the features users want. The themeing options are too good, like no other (+2). The performance (specially gaming) is awesome (+1). Internal memory is aroung 130MB (+1.5). Battery life is one of the best in CM7. Ideal ROM for gaming also. My score (4.5/5). Well the update has brought about changes only in terms of performance. Many claim that it's better but as per me the changes were minimum. Further a slight LAG was noticed in scrolling the App Drawer in some cases in V3. These lags were not there in V2.9. You may see the 3rd page of this thread for my review.
Miracle v4 by Itasoulas
This ROM is a bit old and most of the newer ROMs use this ROM as their base. Users looking for the latest work by the dev can try the Apocalypse ROM by Itasoulas. Good in battery life and highly customizable, this ROM is a delight to use. It comes with a transparent theme & blue lockscreen shortcuts/keys made by team carbon that make the looks appealing. Sorry no score being alloted as this is a ROM which is respected and used by many devs as a base. But still a very fast & clean compilation, great for daily use.
MIUI v6 by Gabreek
This ROM has a really good feel about itself, a very nice attempt to get the MIUI look (+1.5). Call screens are themed, settings and almost everything is themed to look like MIUI. Apart from the visual elements I could not find any thing worth a special mention here. Although the OP claims of no lags, the settings page is still very laggy and also when receiving a call the screen takes 5 secs to show up (+0). Apart from these no other major issue was found. I may suggest it to those who just want to go for MiUi. Internal around 120MB (+1). Good in battery life and highly customizeable also. Total score
Monster X4.2 by HardSol7
This ROM is quite similar to The Ultimatum ROM in terms of performance but boasts a higher benchmark and is actually a bit fast and zippy at some places (+1). This wont allow any user to complain about performance but yes, many would not like the Transparent background of settings, notifications and dialer which makes it really hard at times to read (+1). Further as mentioned by the OP the ROM has live wallpaper support, which most CM7 Roms lack including the Ultimatum ROM. Also I would like to point out that the Launcher provided here is Launcher Pro (Which I feel provides less options than Holo Launcher) which can always be changed. Lastly internal memory is again around 130MB (+1). Score (3/5).
Nitrogen "The Resurrection"
This is the ROM most users love for its Fresh look. Everything is themed from top to bottom, the call-screen, icons, status bar and everything. It's got a very fresh look and gives you an option to choose from Smart Launcher and SS Launcher this forces me to give a (+2). Coming to the performance the scripts used in this ROM are similar to The Ultimatum but performance is a note better (at least with the Smart Launcher). Gaming, multi-tasking and everything about the performance is good so a (+1) there. Coming to the internal memory, the ROM relies on memory mod kernel by PSN so no comments there. But one thing worth a mention is that being LOADED with performance scripts, the Battery Life is actually a bit better than most CM7 ROMs. Well, actually the ROM relies on wi-fi sleep and other sleep policies to achieve the battery life. So all and all I give the ROM a (3/3) (Cannot score the internal memory part so ignored).
Revolution Ultimate V2 by KrantTi
Quite old a ROM to begin with but hold, this ROM is superbly smooth and light. The first thing one would notice is the theming. The theming takes help from Theme chooser of Cm7 ROMs but let me tell you that the theming is awesome. You get the choice to select Xperia S or Xperia Arc theme and both are an eye candy. So a (+2) for theme and look. Coming to the internal memory the baby offers 125MB of internal memory which is again Not bad at all. So a (+1.0) for that. Last but not the least, the performance of this ROM is good. Smooth UI, smooth transitions and a light weight launcher. Battery life was also on the average side. So a (+0.75). Total Score stands at (3.75/5).
CM7 Apo-K-lypse ROM
This is a nice ROM. Uses apocalypse as the base. Despite being loaded with what I'd call bloatware (adfree, youtube downloader, etc.), the ROM still manages to blow off the benchmark score. It is great performance wise so I give it a (+1). Themeing, it uses what looks like a modded theme of the reincarnation ROM with a flaming android in the status bar. But the theme ain't the most pleasing of what I've seen so a (+1.5) for it. Internal storage is something that depends on your partition size (the ROM uses cronmod script). There's also a non sd-ext version of it so you can try it to have a non-expanded storage. I give a (+1) for storage. As a whole, the ROM gets a score of (3.5/5).
Reincarnation ROM v3
I simply love the theme of this ROM. So a straight (+2) for the themeing. Performance is descent but not great relatively. I give a (+0.8) for performance. Storage space available is spacy enough for me, so a (+1) for that. This ROM scores (3.8/5).

CM7 Ace ROM
The only reason this ROM hasn't created a hype it should have created is the lack of users on the ace forums these days. Everyone's bidding farewell to our dear ace & buying new phones these days. Can't help it. I give a (+1) for this ROM straight away for its classy performance. The performance is simply awesome as that of the apocalypse ROM. Integrated with the aroma installer, you get to choose your favourite launcher & theme off the 3 choices available. So a clean (+1.25) for the focus enhanced on themeing. Storage again has an option in the aroma installer with a choice between cronmod script & a no script unexpanded clean internal memory. I give a (+1.75) for this innovation & user friendly approach. The only thing I didn't like was, the language used in the aroma installer. It was may be Spanish, which not really everyone knows & speaks. So this ROM gets a score of (4/5) from my side !
Good work there. Please keep this thread updated. You can also score roms on basis of performance, features, stability and battery life.
Would help a lot to answer ppl who ask questions about choosing the right rom.
Wish this was a sticky.

even if roms are old they can be good
as stock roms are always pretty stable they have a longer life
as for ace development on new roms are reducing because almost everything has already been done so there are like almost no new ideas anymore

I agree mate. There are so many good and stable ROMs out there like BALD EAGLE, BLACKHAWK, XPERIATIZD which is again your work, ADRENALINE older version, etc.
But Not possible to review each and every ROM. Further I only am trying ROMs which are considerably new as they incorporate or are based on older ROMs.
Am currently waiting release of Adrenaline Final and M'Rage. Both r good waiting to review them.

Actually I prefer to try only Stock Based Roms as i am a heavy user and thus need a good battery life to last me for a day. Hence i use BE 1.2 which unfortunately does not work with CM Roms i guess.

Why do we need to have Samsung looks on all the ROMs ? We know stock looking android is the best looking android why not take stock ROM as the base and add all custom features to it?? hi
good idea lets hope one of great devlopers see this get inspired and get it done:good::laugh:
This is actually a good idea. Stock Android Rom looks simple and nice. This is what I think, the touchwiz UI of Samsung , Sense UI of HTC , Timescape UI of Xperia is a bloat for micromax devices.
-- This is my experience with Canvas HD --
1. On Stock ROM - It worked great. No lags. Everything was smooth.
2. On Melting Rocks ROM ( Galaxy s4 rom for Canvas HD ) - This rom gives you amazing battery life but the touchwiz UI is little laggy. I though this may be because the flash didn't worked well. So I flashed it again. It turns out that it lags while scrolling, lags are present in UI, also it has a huge delay when you touch the " Share " button. Whenever I wanted to share a photo, when I touched the share button, the window which shows all the applications to choose to share appears after a 2 sec delay. Also switching the apps has delay.
3. Tried JellyXperia - Well worst experience.
4. Right now I am on MIUI v5 by Abhishek Kumar. - The Rom works really great but sadly my GPS is not working on this rom.
The MOBILE UNCLE MTK TOOL is not working fully, specially the Engineer Mode.
However, there is more RAM available in this rom. I get around 478 MB to 525 MB ram in this rom.
-- What we can expect from a good developer ? ---
1. That huge battery life from Melting Rocks Rom.
2. Air Gestures like S4 if possible.
3. Availability of RAM like in MIUI Rom.
4. Accurate GPS and fully functional Mobile Uncle Mtk tool.
5. xReality ( BE 3 ) , xLoud Audio Filter , Beats Audio
Note : In Melting Rocks Rom, the Rom is not rooted, I had to flash a SuperSuUpdate.zip to get the ram rooted. So yeah, the rom which most people expect here should be rooted.

Plz a vanilla experience..
CM stock with 1 sim would do a fantastic job for me and other those desperate for cm..

I need to ask what does it takes to make SGA-i running stable, lag free and worth keeping.
I tried almost every thing (roms, kernels, tweaks and mods) even CM but the overall performance was not convincing.
So:
-what the ultimate combination of rom and tweaks should I use in order to make 100% use of SGA-i?

Well, there is no best Rom in XDA. Try out different roms. See which ones you like and see their performance.
Memory Wise: partition your SD card and if you want, increase internal memory with a cronmod script.
I'm pretty sure their are different scripts to increase performance and definetly work...
And kernal wise, they can either come with a rom or you can flash it seperatly.

Sell the phone. Put some money on it and buy another phone without a Broadcom chip!
Stock rom without any tweak is Lag free! With pureperformance tweaks its pretty usable. And stock based custom roms we have they are good and stable. CM7 has bugs but performance is top!
But as i understand you want a S3 mini performance from Ace-i which is impossible! So changing your phone is only option left...

yes CM7 has great performance and makes our device even near to higher devices, but right now it is useless, and this was the last solution for me!
I came to a conclusion that whatever we do to this device,no thing changes because it has severe hardware limitations.
So you are right changing it is the only solution but right now I have to keep it because I have no money and the prices in my country are very very very high

My personal Opinion: I use Touchwiz Ressoruction. You can look at the Thread for that in the dev section. It is a nice and smooth rom with the look of S3 (It has Rafael.Baugis Kernal). This is only my opinion. I respect all the other Devs who make amazing Roms, Tweaks and Kernals.

+1 for Touchwiz Ressoruction, currently it's the only stable ROM around, it's very smooth and lag free.
OK guys..soon I will try touchwiz resurrection and give you my feedback
but one last thing, Iam struggling to play youtube flv which I downlowded in my device..can anyone suggest a solution!!
Every stock Rom is stable... Not just touchwiz resurrection.
Want a pure bareboned Rom? Retribution beta 4 extreme bareboned,

Hello there,
Can a custom ROM with Google's ICS or Jellybean version be available?
Though there are lot of mods available, though trying each of them didn't give me the complete feeling of Google version of my phone.
I like Touchwiz but the AOSP version is what I love the most.

Hi There,
I presently have CM11 Rom for which sucks some how in when it comes down to battery but it's super fast. Are there any other custom Roms for GTI9300 other than CM.
I also have another basic query what is the difference between a rom and a kernel..does kernel add anything to the battery life?
Can i add custom kernels to custom roms??If so can i add custom kernel to the existing CM11 to improve battery life ??
Thanks and looking forward to the answer!

Can i add custom kernels to custom roms??If so can i add custom kernel to the existing CM11 to improve battery life ??
Thanks and looking forward to the answer!

I will try to answer but i am not a pro you know . CM based roms are prety same with battery life so you can try TouchWiz based Roms-i think they are better for battery life so you can try for example Back to noot,Blekota S5,S5 Sensation ROM or read a little bit over xda-section roms.i hope i wrote something usefull.cheers
Paranoid Android is very good for battery life, and a good rom for daily driver.
But now I am using ArchiDroid, it's very fast. Faster than CM.

This section is not for questions, just like this site is not for "best ROM" threads.
Sammy try Neat rom and Boeffla kernel.
AOSP try Cm12.1 with Boeffla NG kernel.
Am using Blekota's Note 4 ROM, with Boeffla here, am getting around 20 to 30 hours, depending on my usage on a given day. Whether you think that's good or not depends on what you're expecting, but I am happy with that.
Also the ROM is Samy based, so I get all basic features, the most important for me being Bluetooth, which never works on my i9300 with AOSP ROMs. Touchwizz I don't use anyway, have Nova Launcher
