Though I am used to androids, this is my first device I am attempting to root. I own a Sony Xperia Z1s running 4.4.4. Kitkat. I've been following these posts http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z1/development/root-z1s-4-4-4-t2839990 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784900 and thought it sounded plenty easy enough. One issue has popped up though, and I'm fairly certain it has a simple answer that you guys might provide. Here's what I got: my Sony has usb debugging enabled, I downloaded all necessary files (drivers, easy root tool), unknown sources are enabled (as always), and extracted the files so I could run install.bat. It keeps saying tr.apk not found, trying to download from towelroot. Next, as it kept failing, I decided to manually install towelroot (call me crazy here, but I swear every time I plug my phone in, my internet drops off. I'm using a usb wifi bridge thing [whatever you call those], and the blasted thing won't stay. Probably why install.bat can't help me with towelroot)... anyhoo, I opted to direct download the apk on my phone rather than this crappy PC. So, I began again, now with Towelroot. I ran install.bat and got the waiting for device, connect now message. Stuff started happening, libzxploit.so created, doing the magic, etc, and done. It checked if my device was rooted, and came back with error: device not found. error: device not rooted.
Well GREAT. Let's do it AGAIN.
Ran install.bat again. It keeps stopping on creating vm <loljavasucks>. Is it because of my crap signal, or is there something else I am missing? This seems so easy and straightforward, absolutely frustrated i'm having so many issues. Can someone help walk me through?

EDIT: Is this perhaps when I'm supposed to use Towelroot and 'make it rain'?
SECOND EDIT: Ok, so I'm not alone (though sadly, I'm very alone on this thread......), seems it's because it's newer firmware? But then why is that XDA thread specifically targeting the Xperia Z1s on 4.4.4. as mine is, and all the comments seem to be "Great, it worked!" and "Rooted my device!"? Am I just unlucky here? Ffs, I just want this damn thing rooted so I don't have to muck through KitKat anymore! Now what am I to do?
Lollipop can't get here fast enough....

Hey everyone, I've searched thru the forum looking to see if someone had the same issues I did, and the stellar assistance that was given to others with various problems, I'm hoping that I can get the same (haven't seen anyone with my particular issues yet).
As mentioned in the title, I'm using a stock T-Mobile Amaze, unlocked and I'm using it in Barbados. A few weeks ago, a notification popped up on my phone.

Naturally, I was curious to see what this update was, but after ensuring that everything that was required for the update was in place, I see this...
...which I'm sure means there's some error in installing the update. The phone freezes, and I can't get out of this without doing a battery pull a la blackberry. This is issue 1.
Issue 2 is that a lot of my menus have wrong names, e.g. the 1 for Wireless connections says "Turn It On"
and even the options within the menus are wrong, e.g. In the display menu, to set the screen brightness, that option is entitled "Set A PIN code to lock your UIM Card"
Further to these, often when I try to access many of my settings, the whole shebang crashes, and asks me about sending an error report. Til now, nothing has changed in that regard. Any assistance to these problems would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Your best bet is just to do a master reset on the phone. It should clear up all those issues.
tried it...didn't work (well, the menus still are screwed up, and the settings keep crashing when i try to access some of them, like the Sound menu.)

Have you tried locking your bootloader and flashing the stock firmware?
You already unlocked your bootloader, right?
Just flash a custom rom.
If you REALLY want to flash the 1.43 update then relock your bootloader and flash this: http://goo.gl/KvHzj
Rename it to PH85IMG.zip and store it on the root of your sdcard.
It will update everything.
Then unlock your bootloader again, reroot and you'll be good.
I bought a brand new photon 4g and upon activating it.. I made the mistake of accepting the OTA 45.3.6 because now, despite all my efforts to root the device using AIO's, torpedo method, and even using the relatively new method that apparently works well with the Photon
@ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1235376
Im about ready to give up. Ive had plenty of experience rooting and flashing my HTC Hero CDMA and Samsung Epic however, i was not expecting this.
It seems the main problem with the AIO's is that they are outdated and I am only receiving error messages upon clicking the batch file (yes i have debugging while USB on)
If anybody could help me or give me an alternative rooting method I would be greatful. Would unlocking the bootloader before trying to root make a difference? Again any help would be super appreciated because I've ready the forums and used TFSE and im still coming up stock.
So I'm really new to the Photon too (came from an Evo4G), and had updated to the latest OTA as well. I just rooted using this method, it worked great:
[ROOT] Photon Torpedo, dockless root access
More specifically, I followed the directions here. Note: I did get an error message near the end of that process, but just kept going, and it worked just fine.
I haven't unlocked the bootloader, so someone else will have to chime in for advice on that....
That worked! And I happened to find another set of directions that made things even easier:

First thing, I am very very sorry if I posted this in the wrong topic, but I am in an extreme rush.
My phone is Sony Xperia Tipo (Si21), android 4.0.4 ICS.

I don't have a wireless router so I wanted to connect my phone to my PC through USB cable and share my internet to download some things. I found this tutorial which I decided to follow. In it, it said I needed to root my phone. I decided to do it and followed multiple tutorials but later on I found out they weren't working for ICS. I did download Java JDK and Android SDK along with files I needed and the google USB driver.
I found this tutorial from here though and thought it would work since this is quite an awesome community. I downloaded the files and ran the .bat file. Everything was going well and then and my phone restarted (as it should), but once it started again it was very slow (which could be caused by some backup that bat file created and my low phone memory with no SD card in it). That's all fine, but after like 1minute my screen goes black. I push the power button (used to lock/unlock phone) and only those 3 buttons glow on the push and turn off when I push again. All I can do is to pull out the battery and start the phone again. I restarted it a few times and once it acted normal, but when I accessed my galery it was messed up and when I tried xperia galery it was even worse (didn't show 3d well and there was lots of flickering and similar...). After that I restarted it to see if that would fix the messed up gallery and once phone booted screen went black again.
I tried the unroot option in the bat file and it gave me this:
This is my first android phone and I got it like couple of weeks ago so please have mercy on me ...
Sorry, I fixed it after couple of hours of work...had to restart my whole phone in the end.
I held off updating my XZU to 4.3 until root was found, as I don't want to live without it (because of: Titanium backup, VPN software, full linux install on uSD card).
My XZU has an unlocked bootloader, too, as well as being rooted. I'd also modified /system/build.props too.
When I saw the OTA, I tried it and it failed without giving a reason, so I booted up Windows and used Sony PC Companion, and it too failed:

}
I've looked at many XZU update threads and none seem to mention this specific issue.
When the tool runs, it takes a minute to "prepare" (it seems to have kept stuff it downloaded the first time). The phone does stuff, screen goes blank. Then the update fails giving the above message. The phone is then dead, and I have to unplug the USB before I can turn it on.
I restored the standard build.props from a backup copy. Do I need to relock the bootloader? Remove SuperSU and unroot?
Laptop computer has lots of free disk space, and is running standard win7pro-x64, nothing special installed.
thanks for any ideas.
I think that it is the unlocked bootloader?
I just flashed the ce 290 ftf when I had some error in pcc. Might have been the same one.
Rooting is easy on 290 if you have an unlocked bootloader
it's not root, because I unrooted device, so I am guessing its the unlocked bootloader. I've never managed to get Barclays Bank mobile app to work as it complains about phone being rooted, still doesn't work, so it must be detecting the system modified flag (this is using the older version of the app which was happy to run on a fully p0wned Galaxy Note 2).
OK, it was the unlocked bootloader. OTA update now working.
thanks!
Hello all, I've come with an interesting problem.
I've recently purchased the incredibly cheap TracFone ZTE Z233, running "3.10.49-gdac61ef-00512-ge30dd04 zte-kerne;@Zdroid-SMT" and have decided to try and root it. After having gone through conventional methods, I would like to ask for your guys's input. I started by attempting the traditional methods, specifically downloading and attempting to run KingRoot.apk on the phone. The resulting message, "Cannot find an app to open this file" sent me to find the google play store. Upon the discovery that there was no google play store, I downloaded and ran the windows version of KingRoot on my PC after connecting the phone. Unfortunately, even though my PC recognized the device and was able to move files on and off of it, KingRoot could not find the phone.

Next, I tried to step through the directions Kingroot gave for enabling USB debugging as you can see in the second image. Unfortunately, I parsed through every single setting in the settings menu of the Z233, and no USB debugging option exists on this device. Upon discovering this, I attempted to find other means of rooting ZTE devices and discovered https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319257&page=1 was quite popular. However, this method also requires USB debugging. I won't bore you with the five or six other methods I tried, the issue always boiled down to the solution requiring a feature this phone did not have. The point is, as far as I can tell, there is no way to root this phone by conventional means.
I don't absolutely need to root this, (I bought it as a burner phone) but now I'm interested in rooting it as a project. I'm genuinely curious as to whether or not it can be done. I was hoping you guys would have some leads. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty or do stuff that would risk bricking the phone (like I said, it was cheap.)
Any thoughts, questions or leads? Thanks!
I have ZTE Cymbal Z-320, which is quite similar to this. I can reach USB debug only in FTM mode (when phone is off, PWR ON + VOL DOWN and you in). Root apps are founding phone, tryying to root, but can't. It running android 5.1.1, read more https://androidforums.com/threads/zte-cymbal-z320-root-hack.1290564/
