VR Goggles - Nexus 6 Accessories

Anyone found any goggles on ebay (or elsewhere) that will fit the Nexus 6? Would be fun to try out...
Wonder if these would fit?Samsung VR Goggles

Knox labs said that they will make a Google Cardboard version for the Nexus 6

was hoping someone would make a plastic one with the headband for more long term use...

Whaaaattt??!?!?!
When did that happen? I emailed them and they replied saying they had no intentions of making one for the Nexus 6

http://www.archos.com/us/products/objects/cself/avr/compatibility.html?#menu saw an article that specifically mentioned it would fit the nexus 6. Only 30 bucks
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app

Knox Labs has this new one that works with the Nexus 6 and they specifically mention that they increased the lens diameter. I didn't see any information about that from I Am Cardboard so I left a message asking about it. Their parts kit has 25mm, but they might have changed it for this build.
http://www.knoxlabs.com/products/cardboard-2-0-vr-kit-nexus-6
The design also is tweaked in other ways. It mentions microsuction as well, probably instead of rubber band which isn't in pictures.
(The Google design kit doesn't mention lens size.)

Google Cardboard Virtual Reality Kit
I have purchased google cardboard from getcardboard(dot)in and my Nexus 6 phone fully fit to it. They are also selling Virtual Reality box on amazon for international orders.

Okay, the Knox ones didn't ship, but now they are releasing an updated version called Knox Next that works with more than just the N6 and is officially Google Cardboard certified.

Has anyone actually tried any of these?
My wife bought me a Dodo case Google Cardboard VR headset. It was a complete PITA to put together (not helped by the fact that one of the parts was missing) and, although it just about works, it gives me a headache after about three minutes. It also doesn't have a headband so holding onto it for more than a few minutes gets old very quickly.
Some of the eBay ones are very cheap (< £10) so I might just try one of these and see how well it works.

i've used the cheap $5 cardboard one and it is actually pretty cool...but it's obviously too small for the nexus 6

I just bit the bullet and went ahead and ordered the Knox Next. Has anybody actually received one and tried it yet? I am curious how Knox Labs is at product quality and delivery. I know, it's cardboard, can't expect too much, but man, $27 for it, better be worth it. When I placed my order, there is no information on whether there was stock or any other availability status.
For the Nexus 6, there are only a few other options and based on some reviews from Amazon, they are not very good, for example cheap lens that fall out.

Hey guys!
I'm an owner of the Nexus 6 since 1 month and now I'm interested in virtual reality cause with my old Nexus 4 i think there was no possibility because of the low screen resolution
And now I'M looking for VR Goggles. I can't really find one for such a big screen. Does somebody have an idea where to get one? Mybe a plastic one.

a quick search led me to xingear by imcardboard
pricey but does it work/hold up well?

I saw an article on CNET about the Homido headset. Rick Broida said it was comfortable.

I recently purchase VR Box and so far it's not too bad. It fits the Nexus 6 (barely) but it's not able to run Google cardboard apps. You can purchase an NFC chip, which I did, to run them. Hopefully it'll work.

I purchased the VR Box 2.0 on Amazon and it works well with N6. I purchased it from this particular seller because of the better Wii style Bluetooth remote that it comes with. The smaller key fob style remote didn't work as well.

I bought a pair of cardboard goggles by Minkanak (never heard of them). They're well constructed, but the way they have the setup specifically for a N6, the power button turns it off. It takes a bit of tweaking, but I got it to work. For under 20 bucks you cant go wrong. It's very cool. I tried porn with it and it is bizarre LOL! The effect of flying and roller coasters are very cool too. Be careful with what you buy because that button issue is a pain in the ass.

Me, especially with the latest firmware upgrade (LCA43). :good:
512 RAM is not enough!!!
Am I missing something from the next gen of Android Wear watch??? Same Processor, same RAM, same Resolution, same Storage.
For Asus, we are getting a crown button, better battery according to them, but the sandwich design is gone which I simply love.
For Moto, they switched to Snapdragon 400, lol. The flat tire is still there.
For the rest, I don't know. It seems the whole world is switching to round watch except Asus (Oh yeah!, I love Rectangular watch)

Good price, but otherwise seems a bit meh to me. I'll be sticking with my old one and see what the new Moto looks like.

On topic: The watch is available for order on the Google Store. You can preorder three versions of the watch at Bestbuy.com. It looks like it will only be available online. I preordered mine and it should arrive on Friday
I got mine. Gunmetal w/ navy leather strap from Google store. I replaced the band with a black metal one anyway.
I like it a lot, think it looks better in person. Seems pretty responsive and only drained about 15% battery after 4 hours.

Amazon, any 22mm band will work but you'll need the spring bars and spring bar tool (or you can just take it to a jeweler)
I got this one,

Cracked rear camera cover glass visor thingie? Source for a replacement one found!

I broke mine. It was my fault, I'm not blaming it on spontaneous shattering. Whether that actually happens or not, I don't know, but I dropped my phone and it broke. Not severely, just one crack.... Right across the camera lens, so any pictures taken around bright lights/the sun have lovely spots in them due to light catching on the crack.
As it was clearly my fault (some very minor damage to the back as well), I'd have to pay the full price for repairing, which is prohibitively expensive. Local cell repair shops were unable to find the part for me, so I set out on a journey to find a replacement.
I finally found on, on Aliexpress, here: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/100-...using-with-3M-Sticker-Camera/32579389618.html
Now, of course, this may or may not be a "official" part, who knows. I'll update the post when I receive it, but I felt I'd share the link in case anyone - like me - had a damaged glass cover and couldn't take photos, and had no other good repair options.

Nice! I wonder if the glass and bottom comes already attached? From the repair videos I've saw, you have to remove those parts to get to the screws.
I'm pretty excited to see these show up though. I know the 6p is difficult to work on but the housing doesn't look too bad. It's good to have options especially when the back casing has a tendency to bend and crinkle. ?
I had to re seal my glass bar on the back of my nexus 6p and all I used was a hairdryer and a pick of some kind then stuck it back down and its been great since so it shouldn't be hard to replace a broken bar...

dude, the hardest thing is obtaining the part... and ALI obviously has it... for $6.99 thats a no brainer.
mines not cracked and even i am considering picking one up as spare...
some heat, a razor, and 10 mins of ur time...
cool beans!, thanks for link
Please check back in to let us know how this goes.
Nice find hope I don't need it tho!
my 2c - I dont think is an OEM part - as the description on Aliexpress says " 1 x for nexus 6p...", the "for" is the bit that makes me assume this is a third party part.
Now, it may be of comparable quality, I am not discrediting the product, but just calling it out. OP, please keep us all in the loop. Hope for you that its a high quality part.
It seems AlliExpress is out of them or something. Once I try to purchase one using this link it says page not found. If I don't use this link I cannot even find the item.
would love to see a write up of this if/when you change your glass or back cover.
I've just ordered one of these from Ali Express. If it seems like nothing happens when you click Buy Now or Add to Cart, make sure you've selected a color (even though there is only one color). $16.99 with free shipping, but will take between 15 and 40 days to get here.
I have to say, Huawei customer service is awful. I started the process of checking to see if I can get it repaired (under warranty or otherwise) last Sunday. I sent an e-mail to the address they gave me and included 7 pictures of the phone and proof of purchase, as instructed. When I called today (Friday) I was told I'd have to start the process over, so I sent another e-mail with 7 pictures of the phone. The approval process is supposed to take up to 72 hours. And if it isn't approved, I'm on my own. They don't do paid repairs. Fortunately, my phone still works. But what if it didn't? I'd be without a phone while waiting for these guys to tell me if they'll fix it or not. This puts a real damper on my attitude toward this phone, and toward Google. This is supposed to be a premium, flagship phone. Shame on Google, and shame on Huawei.

It'll be great to hear the outcome of this, like many others I'm sure sooner or later your going to break it, damage it with grinder/Welding sparks.

I'm not the OP, but I had my glass break as well. I didn't drop it, I honestly have no idea how it happened. I tried getting fixed under warranty... Pfft, waste of time. Huawei warranty in Canada Sucks. Anyway, I ordered from Global Direct Parts. As far as I can tell it is the original OEM part. Install was a breeze since it was cracked and easy to take out after heating it up.

Good as new. Hope this helps someone.
Good to know that there is a replacement part available I might open my Nexus 6P soon to try something out I don´t like the stock cooling of the SoC to be honest and I´ve already improved my old Nexus 7 ( 2013 ) and Nexus 5 (2013) cooling.
I´m just scared that I might shatter the visor glass since this one looks really tough to remove..
thanks for the link.. might be useful in future
Think you can go through the steps of removing the broken lens (tools used, etc) and installing the new lens? Would be much appreciated as I'm waiting for my new lens to arrive and not really sure of how to go about the replacement. Thanks!

S8 VR headset works fine with Note 8

I previously owned an S8+, so I still have the VR headset here. On a whim, I connected my verizon Note 8. To my surprise it fit fine (A little more snug than the s8, but definitely fit ok). I was surprised to then see a prompt saying I should check my phone to install the Oculus app. I did just that, and lo and behold VR is working just fine. I'm not really sure why they are telling people this doesn't work when it does. Anyone else try this out?

If they disable this through software, I'll be pretty angry. This proves that technically nothing is stopping the old headset from working, I'm struggling to find a reason they are putting out a new version.

Wow, this is great news. :good:
Is there any stress on the Note 8? Like does it feel like if you release the latch, the phone will go flying out?
Also do you notice any improvements, like a slight field of view or smoother experience?

No stress that I can tell. It fits more snug than the S8, so you have to be slightly more careful putting it in. Once snapped in, there is no worry of it falling out.
As for performance, it's comparable to the S8. I haven't done anything that would strain the cpu. I ran a few games just to verify that it worked with no error messages.

Thanks for the news. I didn't order the N8 version in my order from Samsung and then started regretting it. Folks are starting to dump the 2017 version on EEEEE the Bay and I picked up a like new one for less than half the price of the N8 version. The first model was the white one and then they came out with the 323 (black in a white box) which I used briefly for the Note 7 and then the Note 5 to which I reverted. You had to buy the controller separately for the 323. The 2017 324 came in a black box with the picture of both the Gear VR and the controller on the front of the box.

Awesome! Keep us updated, I wanted to do this but my N8 is still on preorder, and I was worried it might be too big and crack the glass
I didn't use the Gear VR that I got free with the S8+ much because it stuttered so much.
No stutter for me on the Note8.
Because they want money duh lol.......
But yea i figure it would work. At most be tight or off center.
Either way had a few of the vr headset and sold all of them but the s8 plus one. So thats cool i can still use it. I dont use it that often so no sense in buying a new one.
I'm internet famous https://uploadvr.com/samsung-galaxy-note-8-works-previous-model-gear-vr/
thats good to know. i had to take a dremel to my 2016 gear vr (came with the s7 / note 7) to get my note 8 to fit
Glad to know I am not the only one who used the note 8 with the vr from the S8 era.
I mainly use the VR while laying down and for some reason, the video playback only worked in a sitting position. So I never used the VR when I got the S8.
This VR works well with my note and the video playback worked fine as well, either sitting or laying down. I am happy I can use it finally.
The phone fits in. A little snug but the clasp holds it. It won't fly out when released, at least it didn't happen in my multiple uses.
I gave it a try. The Oculus software worked fine, that's no problem. But the Note 8 fits very tight. Actually, the latch doesn't completely grasp the phone 100% like it suppose to. I understand why Samsung made a Note 8 version. I don't feel completely comfortable using it without the Gear VR cover on, afraid it might pop out(unlikely but not chancing it). So I'll just use this with the cover on for now on. I don't use the pass-through cam anyway.
That's great then I thought I wouldn't be able to view my gear360 content

2016 GEAR VR vs NOTE 8 (and Dremel) - OP SUCCESS

I made a video that I'll upload to youtube "later." I intend to trim it down to the essentials because I believe one absolutely has to make these kinds of videos SUCCINCT and not yammer on for 3/4 of the video about one's life story.
However, the title and the pictures attached really speak for themselves... and I can bore you with my life story here
I heard Samsung was releasing a new Gear VR to fit the Note 8 on this video here https://youtu.be/tR2X0T_3l6o and instead of plopping down $130 for a new Gear VR, I vowed to attack my current 2016 Gear VR (which was FREE with my Galaxy S7) with my trusty dremel.
Samsung sets our pants on fire, comes back with a mediocre S8+ upgrade for ludicrous cost, and then tries to sell us a new Gear VR for $130?
Samsung, I assure you that we certainly are suckers, but we are not made of money.
I received my preordered Note 8 yesterday.
As these kinds of things are best done without the caffeine jitters from my morning coffee, I had to go at it early... and most importantly, before I had been awake long enough to come to my senses about what I had planned.
Planning: Simply consisted of measuring out a piece of cardboard based on the latest measurements reported, then sticking that on my Gear VR to see where I'd need to cut. I also researched where the sensitive electronic bits and pieces were.
Execution: I had crudely used a box cutter to make a basic outline with the actual note 8 in it with the USB C connector the 2016 Gear VR came with for the Note 7. I then taped up what I could to prevent bits of melted plastic dust from getting everywhere, then went to town on it with my dremel.
It works great, but you can kind of see a little sliver of the right eye's image in the far corner of your left eye.
She won't win any beauty pageants, but I'd say she's a keeper
edit: Here's the video and I should probably put in a little warning about a problem I almost had in doing this..
**I almost cut too much plastic off of the bottom of the locking piece (which has a guide) and this would have caused the locking piece to pop off permanently, so I'd recommend using caution with that in mind.**

How did you make sure that the image on the screen would be centered?
Well done, I'd rather an uglier looking headset than spending 130 bucks on a new one.

no matter what (compatible) phone you use with a gear vr headset, the bottom of the phone is always fixed.

i could sell it online, but i can imagine ebay will be flooded with these shortly. it isn't even the 15th yet and they're going for under $20 shipped.
consider this a recycling project.

That's good.
I'm not surprised in the least, considering what happened with the SM-R322 "consumer" Gear VR model released for the Note 5 that allegedly did not support the Note 4.
Well, the Note 4 worked in it after a careful bit of Dremeling, and you didn't even have to go that far for the SM-R323 (2017 revision for S7/Note 7 with swappable microUSB and USB-C) to fit the Note 4 - it just fit in and worked, no need for the original SM-R320 (Note 4 Innovator Edition)!
That said, I'm passing on the Gear VR this time, not because I think it's a bad piece of kit, but because my Oculus Rift CV1 + Touch spoiled me rotten when it comes to quality VR. Maybe when the Note 8-compatible model drops in price after a year or two, I'll snag it.
A dremel wasn't even needed.
This reviewer tried in the 2016 and mid 2017 versions.
Since I can't post links yet, look for the youtube channel "TK Bay"
Th gearvr vids with the note8 are pretty recent. There should be 2 vids on it on his channel

i looked all over TK Bay's channel and couldn't find what you were referring to.
his videos do show comparison of the gear vr versions and you can see that modification is obviously needed. they also show that the connector as well as the optics pretty much stay in the same spot through all the versions.
I would've thought with the phone being slightly bigger, the lenses are slightly ajar/angeled/concave minutely differently in order to view the entire screen?
I can't remember how it looks through the headset, it was a long time ago when I had my original.

The 2016/mid-2017/note8 gear vr has the clamp self adjusting. Any minute changes in positioning is automatically compensated by your eyes.

I am interested in this bit, too. I will be getting a Note 8 in couple of days, and already have the 2016 Gear VR from the S7 Edge days.
If the Note 8 fits in (even if it is a tight fight), I won't have to buy the new version (which will need to be imported and end up costing a lot).
Also, if you really have to shove the phone in, would that put too much stress on the connector or the phone body?
About using dremel, I simple don't have the skills and the equipment. Or even the patience!
EDIT: Found the video. Seems Note 8 does work with the 2016 Gear VR, without modifications. Please watch 12:10 onwards: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvhWHvyppfg

He fails to mention in the TK Bay video he's using the usb-c adapter from the 2017 VR. Notice the white tab on the lock switch. The 2016 comes with a usb-c with a black lock switch and is slightly fatter. If you want to dremel something I would take the adapter apart and dremel it to make the Note 8 sit further into the adapter. Or you just need to order the usb adapter from a 2017. Either from Samsung or there's a UK eBay listing. Search for part number GH98-41582A

Very quick review of the Nokia 7.1

Hello all,
I just received my 7.1 and thought I'd just give everyone some quick impressions. The "Blue" color is almost black it's so dark. Not a deal breaker for me but it's darker than I expected.
It feels good. Solid. The screen is pretty good as well and bright enough to be usable in direct sunlight. Not Samsung bright but good.
It seems pretty snappy overall but I'm used to using an S8+ and an Essential PH-1 (the PH-1 has battery issues that Essential won't fix so the 7.1 is it's replacement) which are both very quick phones. It's not slow by any means I'm just used to super fast.
I've spent most of the afternoon getting it setup and installing apps and only used about 40% of the battery but got three hours of SOT so that seems somewhat promising.
Played with the camera just a bit. The pic I posted is straight out of the camera.
It came on the September security patch and no updates are available as of yet.
It's bare bones Android as expected but there are a couple of settings that I can't find one being how to enable the battery percentage in the status bar. I've enabled System UI Tuner and it's not in there or in any of the Battery settings that I can find.
And I can confirm that it is a dual sim device and I can enable WiFi calling but it remains to be seen if it will work because I am on AT&T prepaid and pretty sure I don't have it.
It comes with some earbuds a charger and cable in the box.
I really want to put it in a case. I hope some become available soon.
Anyway if anyone has a question I will answer what I can.
I seen a few camera samples before yours, and the pictures look good until you zoom in a little and see that all the detail is gone. Do you think it’s just Nokia’s camera app? I’d like to see how google camera does on this phone.
I don't know what to say about that except the sample on my pc looks much better than the sample here. I can't explain it, but it's plain to see. I would try a gcam version if I can figure out which one seems the most compatible. I can install ProShot and see if that gets better results.
I haven't spent much time with the camera app but I thought it was fine as far as usability goes but then again I'm not all that demanding. I'm more of a point and shoot user.
It's not as good as my S8+ but I really wouldn't expect it to be either for less than half the cost.
If the weather clears up here maybe I'll take the S8 and the 7.1 out and do a comparison.

Could you upload the same somewhere else that lets you do it lossless?
I'm returning the phone to Amazon. The case situation is ridiculous. Nokia support referred me to a Nokia case that Amazon says "one to three months" wait. When I asked the support rep why Nokia didn't have anything ready at the launch they just referred me back to the Nokia case. The phone is slippery and I've already almost dropped it more than once. I'm returning it before I damage it.
Edit: Bought a Pixel 2 instead which is what I should have done in the first place.
Mmm was thinking of replacing my PH-1 with this. I don't have battery issues but my touch screen is like super fu**ed with ghost touch, flickering, and bad service in my area (switching to att in few weeks). Amazon is willing to give me a full refund but was not sure if I should take it or RMA with Essential for screen.
You just returning the Nokia cause no case options ? Everything else seems to work straight? Obviously anything camera wise can beat the essential so that's why I was looking into 7.1 lol.

Yes I returned it because I'm not comfortable carrying a slippery bar of soap around until someone decides to release a case. The phone itself was fine for what it cost. I almost dropped it a couple of times and if I drop it without a case it's on me. Nokia screwed the pooch here because it's a decent device let down by absolutely no third party support. Nokia can't even deliver their own cases! Those are showing as one to three months to deliver. All the Chinese cases have very vague shipping dates from the middle of November to the Middle of December.
I realize not everyone will feel this way but I decided I would be better off returning it now. I really wanted a Pixel 2 anyway so that's what I did.
The camera was decent and I managed to get a Gcam mod working on it (GCam-5.1.018-Pixel2Mod-Arnova8G2-V8.3b1) but never really got the time to test it out quality-wise.
If you can live with little to no options for a case it's worth the money as far as I'm concerned.
Thanks for the insight man!
I may just order one once I send this PH-1 back then. Ill just get a universal slip in phone case or flipcase from 5below until I'm able to get a case for it then. That or steal otn of my kids Power Ranger socks from the dryer and carry it around like that till end of November.
