I dont understand
Some people say apps use it
But i dont agree
But if so then
Whats is the cache files in /data/data/*/cache ?
For
And why does apps like galleries
Make files in our internal memory aka /sdcard
But not in /cache ?
I dont get it
Any help clarifying it for me would be nice
Some apps do use it, as a less permanent cache than cache in /data partition. Specifically I know some of googles apps use it, thumbnails, market downloads, previews etc. /cache partition is basically data that won't affect the app at all if flushed. Cache in /data partition is more per app specific files that theoretically could stay until reset or app is deleted. At least that's my understanding.
Its also used for other non app stuff like logs, filesystem lost and found etc

I've been having problems with the internal memory on my hero getting very low, and my phone seems to be slowing down a lot as a result.
I have apps2sd set up, and that seems to be working fine, however looking through the folders on my phone, the /system/xbin one seems very very large (582,031,812 bytes according to Astro).
What is this folder, and is there anything I can do to free up space? Would deleting the contents be a good idea?
if i'm not totally wrong that would be around 580mb, which just can't be true. besides that the internal memory is in /data, while /system/xbin is in /system, so totally different partitions (it is like asking "my space on d:\ is getting low, should i delete c:\xyz?"). last but not least you will most certainly break your system if you delete stuff from there. and the contents of everything inside /system ususally doesn't change, except you do it manually or use any kind of update.zip (new rom, theme, etc).
try wiping dalvik-cache from recovery, that might free a few mb.
Thanks.
I thought it didn't make any sense, and that it must be in a different place to the internal memory. Ok, I'll look through data to work out if anything is taking up more space than expected.
What will I lose by wiping dalvik-cache?
Why would my memory keep on shrinking? My apps are on my sd card, so it shouldn't be them...

nothing, it is recreated on boot. the problem is that when you uninstall an app the optimized "copy" of the app is not deleted from dalvik-cache.

for once through dalvik-cache, everytime you install an app it takes some space in dalvik-cache, though not as much as the app itself. besides that the app data (settings, savegames etc) is stored in /data, as well as system settings.
Hmm, deleting the dalvik-cache didn't make any difference.
Hi all. well i have just deleted around 18 mbs with root explorer some apks on system/app , but It didn't free internal memory at all (it's still at 94.1 mb) I just did a wipe of dalvik cache (thinking that maybe that could work) but it only left 2mb extra free memory. So , what's happening? how can I permanently delete those 18mbs?

/system partition has nothing to do with /data partition where apps go ( /data/app ). deleting apps from /system ain't that bad - less crap in rom, basically but that's about it. theoretically u could move some apps from /data/app to /system/app but it goes with some security etc. implications. did it with few apps, worked, but rather for other reasons than freeing up /data (never ran out of space on S ). but as mentioned - it is possible, but not exactly so advisable. your phone, your choice

Hi, thanks for the answer =)
Ok, now I get it! So it's just to have less crap, couse it's the "system storage" not "application storage". I confused them. Thanks !!
The reason I'm asking this is because of the 20MB application size download limit that a lot of people experienced. I did a little research and deduced that it's because the /cache partition is used by Market as a temporary download directory.
Even if I wipe the /cache partition, it still only has around 20MB of free space.
Now, I know that physically resizing /cache might be impractical (not to mention dangerous), so I think the best way is to create some sort of script that creates a link to the /cache partition (not unlike DTA2SD and Link2SD scripts).
The solutions I found were mostly for HTC phones, and the Samsung Galaxy S. I'm a bit scared of the potential damage it may cause by applying a script for another phone into this phone.
Please don't suggest flashing another ROM. I'm quite comfortable with this one.
TL;DR So does anybody know how to increase the /cache partition size safely and reliably?
Thanks in advance!

Hello XDA,
I've begun flashing ROMs and rooted my device a little under a month ago. From what I've noticed, the system partition on my Samsung Galaxy Ace is usually quite free (40mb+ on most ROMs). However, the /data partition isn't.
I'd like to know if there's a way so I can take some of the space used in the /system partition and add it to the /data partition. I do have Link2SD installed, but the problem is that some apps won't install because there simply isn't enough internal space available. I know that it's possible with other phones such as the LG Optimus, but is there a way to achieve this on our phone?
Thanks! I'm running StockLite v6
Note: The LG Optimus instructions are in the thread "[HOW-TO] Easily resize system + data partitions!" by effortless.
Haven't seen a method to use system partition as data .
But we don't need to do that.As AMARULLZ Scripts(original thread Amarullz Script) does a fine job
It will mount as sd-ext partition as /Data and vice-versa and copies system data to sd-ext(which now points to original internal mem.) so no performance degrade.
DO a nandroid Backup before.
If you have sd -ext partition just disable/uninstall links2sd ,s2e or any other such app and delete their script from init.d folder and reboot you will have no app in your app drawer from sd-ext if you did it successfully.
Now flash This Script.zip.(Mount System)
check you have 40ad2sdx in your init.d
Atleast reboot 2 times for smoother experience.
Now you will have Internal memory equal to sd-ext partition so never run out of memory .
Hello!
Few months ago, I rooted my Sony Xperia ZR (C5502) official ROM build 10.7.A.0.222, android version 5.1.1. Yesterday I decided to uninstall all the bloat that came with my device (like Google Play Movies & TV, Google Play Books, Hangouts, etc). I used Titanium Backup to uninstall these system apps. After that, I got lot of free space in my /system partition (around 500 MiB). I wanted to make use of this space by moving some apps installed in phone's internal memory to this /system partition. I used Link2SD's Convert to System App so that these apps move from /data partition to /system partition (I made sure the apps I moved were really installed in phone, and not external SD card's asec).
Now what should have happened is, /system partition should fill up, and memory in /data partition should free up. However, what happened is, /system partition filled, but no memory was freed up /data partition!! I suspected if Convert To System App just made a symbolic link in /system partition, but this wasn't the case. The /data/app/<package> folders for all apps I moved, were gone. I also executed ls -l on /system/priv-app/<package>, but it didn't show up as symbolic link.
I want to know why is the space in /data partition not freeing up? Thanks!
PS: I've also used Link2SD's Integrate update into system function, for those system apps that have been updated. That did free up memory in my /data partition.
Solved
I found the problem. Couldn't find a way to delete this thread so I'll just reply what I found.
Converting user app to system app only moves their apk and lib to /system. app's data and dex still reside in /data partition only, hence the space didn't free as much as I expected. However, I cleared dalvik-cache and then when they were rebuilt/recompiled on next phone restart, I could see a lot more free space in /data partition. This shouldn't happen though since Link2SD delete the old when when I converted and new one was made on phone restart. Maybe it couldn't delete some.
