Use google to backup your contacts. That's what I use. Then, when you set up your Google account on your phone after you flash, it will download your contacts for you.
Of course, on your previous ROM, you needed to have been logged into your Google account and set the syncing on for contacts in order for this to work.
See im having trouble syncing my contacts through my google. Like i go into my contact app and find the sync settings when i select my google account it says my contacts are having trouble syncing and that the last time it was actually synced was like 3 months ago

If you're rooted, you could use various backup apps from Google Play. I believe Titanium Backup is one of them, but I'm not certain. There are plenty of contact apps out there if you look that should help. I just don't know which ones as I don't use any since my Google account syncs just fine.

Hi GUYS!
I just bought the Thunderbolt, My very first Droid very very happy!
My question is how do i back up my contacts..
I rooted my phone last week, and have installed perfect storm ROM. and backed everything up with Titanium Back up.
However, I realize that every time a new ROM or updated version comes out, I would have to wipe all my data. I only restore User Apps and no the System Data, becomes this is a new rom. Or should i restore all??
So my question is what files do i need to restore from Titanium backup to restore my contacts. because it gets very annoying having to link my contacts between Google email account, and Exchange each time.
**is there a way I can save all the phone contacts i have from exchange, and link that to Google permanently?
So when i updated my Google account, all my number would come out..
or is there a file i can restore through my Ti Backup to save all that hassle, Everytime I wipe.
Thanks Guys!
Your contacts should have sync'd to your online Google account.
That's the beauty of Android. Once everything is sync'd up. You can change phones, log into your google account and just resync all your info immediately.
hey buddy,
how do i sync all my contact to my google account now?

yea importing contacts can be bad if you have google sync on, it will create duplicate contacts if you restore contacts and alot of hassle removing the dupes
If you add your contacts as Google contacts you can edit them/view them online at http://www.google.com/contacts . They will automatically sync up then. Also, there are programs on Market you can get to save the contacts as well. Lastly, with most roms, once you get going with it, you don't *always* have to wipe; oftentimes you can just do it as an upgrade. At least that's what I can tell.

check under accounts and sync and make sure your google sync is on, contacts calendar and mail. when you save contacts on your phone you are given 2 options, phone contact or google contact. always choose google contact if you want them auto synced. Phone contacts wont get backup unless you use Verizon's Backup Assistant or use a 3rd party program like Ti Backup Pro or some other software to do it. Easier to use google contact and forget about it.
I came from a blackberry with Exchange mail.. So all my contacts are actually stored in my exchange mail. So is there a way where I can just sync all my contact information from Exchange mail to Google account.
I hate having to link both google info with my exchange mail info.. A couple of times i don't mind, but if i want to play around and update roms frequently i rather not deal with this type of problem if its avoidable.
Once you are all updated on your Google account, anytime you change roms and you get the "Welcome to Android" startup screen (If you wipe your phone prior to changing roms), once you put in your google ID and password, your phone will "pull" the contact information to your phone from your google account, so you won't need to re-input anything.
Only time you may have an issue is if you had a contact on your phone and for whatever reason you did not sync before wiping, you may lose any added contacts that didn't get sync'd up.
The easiest way I backed up my contacts was just make a vcard back up from the menu in messaging app to your SD card and then restoring it from your SD card when your done flashing. It was very fast and easy for me.

Quick question. When i export my contacts out of my phone book, to my sd card. when i do a wipe. does the wipe, wipe everything on the sd card as well.
sorry i'm very new.. been using a blackberry for the last 4 years.. and this has been an amazing moment in my life.. the only thing i miss is the keypad on my bold.. but the gingerbread keypad is making my transition a silky smooth one.
*i just imported my contact info from my exchange to Google.. Now my google is up to date.. i think i'm ready to play.

wipe wont wipe your sdcard, unless you physically do so in clockwork recovery.
Sounds like you got everything set up. Congrats on your new phone!
On a side-note. You have an Android, not a Droid. The Droids are a specific set of Verizon Android devices.

Hey guys, I'm running bamf 1.7 themed on my wife's phone and all her crap is in vzw backup assistant but I'm unable to get it to work. I found a zip of backup assistant in one of the rom threads but when I run it in either rom manager or straight from clockwork it doesn't come up in my application tray. I just want to get her contacts back... Does anyone have any ideas on how to best do so? Thanks!
if you can't find a solution just go into her vzw account on the website, highlight messages and select contacts and the backup asst comes on ..
Nice. Thanks for the reply. I actually registered her and logged her in then exported the contacts to csv then imported them into her google acct. I think she's good to go!
no problem, how did you export her contacts ? im trying to do the same .. im done with vzw backup asst
nvm i found it
You guys have gmail right? Just keep your contacts synced to that.

Yeah, long story short:
My wife's phone has been FC'ing a lot of stuff lately and she got tired of it. She told me that I could root her phone, so I did so, put BAMF 1.7 with the Android Cutie theme on it and went to replace all her shiz.
Well, turns out she had not really updated/cleaned her Google Contacts, and so when I redid her phone, her Google contacts came up, but none of her added in phone #s.
Well, Registered her online with Vzw and then exported her contacts to a csv then imported them into Google and she should be good for the hereafter.
She really likes the Rom, too, which is nice.
I just finished installing a new, custom, ROM (Cognition X2 Beta 4). Everything is running well and there is no lag I know of.
Only one problem: All my contacts are gone.
I thought Google backed them up (with Google Sync). Apparently not! Even though my picture albums, gmail, and calendar; my contacts are still the same default AT&T contacts!
Does anybody know I can PLEASE get my old contacts back? I MUST have them (I JUST got everyone manually saved on my new phone from my old iPhone 4 - and restored the iPhone. F U 0 K!)
Yes, I did backup the "stock" rooted ROM. Is it possible to extract the contacts from it - without restoring back to it?
I'm desperate.

Go into your gmail on pc Web Browser and look on left side you will see contacts look to see if your phone contacts are there. If not then back up your current system in cwm then restore the stock one. Sync contacts with google let it finish then restore cognition backup in cwm. Sucks but easiest way to get them back.
Google only syncs the contacts that is in GMail contacts. Your phone supports many different contact providers. You can have Gmail contacts, exchange server contacts, facebook contacts and Phone contacts. The default is phone contact which syncs with no one. If you only save your contacts in Phone contact, you will never get that synced to the cloud. So, next time when when you create a new contact, pay attention to the where the contact is going and make sure it is Gmail contacts.
How did you back up your stock ROM? With titanium backup? If so restore your contacts with it. When you make a gmail account, make sure you go in your contacts app press menu/more/settings/save new contacts to/your google account or always ask and not to your phone so it can auto sync.
If you ever came from an iPhone or any other phone and transferred your contacts to Android. Go in your contacts app cause it's usually not stored in the google account to sync but rather the phone. Press menu/import & export/export to sd card....you will have a vcf file on your storage card. Go on gmail thru the computer. On your left pan you should see contacts. With your phone plugged into your computer, pull the vcf file or just upload it directly from your phone to your gmail using a file explorer on your phone like Astro. Back to your gmail on the computer...press contacts and find the button more in the center. Press import from there and merge and find duplicates if you need to.

-Did you try deleting your Google account in accounts from your phone and then add it back? That might work. Since you checked online and your contacts are still on Google, it sounds like a sync-focused problem and not an account issue. Is your Google Calendar syncing? Also are other accounts syncing?
I once installed a rom (not Tasks) and the contacts did not show up until I reloaded gmail and sent myself an email. (I don't normally use Gmail, but did for that issue!)
Sorry, I don't have more recommendations!
Good Luck!

good job! However, I would be concerned that they may not sync or stay updated. . . You might still have a sync issue.
Does your calendar sync? Also gmail on the phone stays sync'd with the desktop /web versions? That's the issue!

Hey guys, just installed the latest version of hyperdrive for NC5 builds on my verizon galaxy s4 using safestrap. All is well except for my contacts. I only have about 5 of them still remaining...When I was stock, I had contacts backed up to verizon backup assistant, as well as both of my gmail accounts. I've setup my gmail accounts and attempted to sync contacts with no luck. I also went to gmail on my desktop and attempted to restore contacts from an earlier date, but the same 5 or so contacts pop up. I should also add that I did quite a bit of searching and tried several methods but with no success.
I feel like there has to be something obvious I'm missing here, but I'm pretty sure I've checked all the basics. I'd rather just restore my contacts rather than restore my phone and attempt the whole thing again.
Appreciate the help!!
The same thing happened to me. I believe I ended up getting them back by logging on to my Samsung account.

Tried my samsung account as well and with no luck. I was really surprised my google account didn't do the trick. It's always worked in the past when switching devices.
I restored my stock rom, got my contacts back, then exported them all to my external sd card. Probably gonna give hyperdrive another go and hopefully can import them from there. I'll post back with results!! Hyperdrive seems super awesome btw...
I'm thinking some contact file needs to be deleted somewhere that's over writing my google contacts or something...no clue. If anyone knows why my google backup isn't working the way it should share your thoughts!

Super Backup from the Play Store. Backup contacts, call logs, sms conversations, calendar info; all to a zip you can save to your external sd card and email to yourself or keep on cloud storage as well.
Cool, I'll give that a try. Thanks!
Success! As long as your contacts are somewhere on your external sd card you'll be good to go. Exporting from contacts or using super backup both work well. Still not sure why my google account didn't get them in there though.
Thanks again for the help! Loving Hyperdrive
