Sound issues after +1h of music play - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my first and second Nexus 9 had this issue.
It happens when playing music > 1h or streaming flash with Puffin.
I cant really describe it sounds so bad with lot of distortion but see for youself.
Am I the only one?

It might be the app, does it do this with other apps like pandora or play music?

It did with Puffin browser too (flash content) has I said, so it is not only app related.
Uau really impressed you guys don't have this issue. I like the 2 speakers and the sound so I use it a lot to listen to some music while I do other stuff.
Well I think it happens more then 1/2 hours, but even so totally unacceptable.
Both tablets are HT4AFJT made 15/10/2014.

Try something other than puffin. Seems related to that and not the device
Sent from my Nexus 9 using XDA Free mobile app

um, ICS or earlier version of flash app, 5 OS versions later, and you expect it to work flawlessly? hmmm. I don't see a problem with the device in that use case. side loading flash Over two years of no support or upgrades. blame the devs that still code to flash well after the idea of abandoning it even by their creators.

crackling sound while playing video

I just run into a problem a couple times now, and I was wondering, if someone else had the same problem...
I have videos / Podcasts that seem to have a very annoying crackle noise in it... video does not stodder... or anything, what would indicate bad playback or something... also it does not seem to be only if volume is set high... i do use my headphones with it...
Now in the begginning i thought i might just be a bad recorded show.... but this morning i heard it with a different show... and its very annoying... now this still might be a coincident... I will see if the video plays fine on my PC... but until then I was just wondering if anyone else have issues with crackleing sound while video playback...
The only time I had this was during playback of AAC 5.1 on video (MKV) files. If you have this in ALL your apps, I wonder if you have a faulty phone? Sounds like a weird one!
You said you use headphones, so the problem occurs with AND without using the 3.5mm jack w/ headphones?
Well i actually havnt tried without the headphones... But if would be odd if it had anything to do with that since some videos go flawless with them.... The only 2 video players I have is rock player and podcast player dogcatcher.... Any other suggestions on players?
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
See if it happens on headphones too. If it is only through speakers, possible defective speakers? If it is both, it could just be the media or perhaps something with the audio decoder?
I am no expert so take my advice with a grain of salt.
Also, try DicePlayer and see if that works.
Download Pandora or Slacker radio and see if it happens through that, too. If it does, there's definitely something wrong!!
Ok.... I checked the file its a quick time mov file.... It never happens so far with my radio app.... Also only happens with one or two video podcast with dogcatcher.... They problem so far o ly occurred with the headphones... Will try later without them...
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Do you know if your podcasts are 5.1 channel? I wouldn't think they would be, but if they're 5.1 and AAC that would align with my problem.
Tried dice player.... Even though it's nice same problem...
I might make a video so you have a idea.... How is the best way to do that? I any apps out there that record your cellphone screen with audio?

alright here you can see what i am talking about...

normal video without problems...

Any other thoughts how I might be able to fix this?

I had the same issue when I downloaded Max Payne 3 a few days ago. The menu screen starts crackling horribly, and at least one other Evo Lte user confirmed the same.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
this is sooo funny i wanted to state the exacte same thing just started playing max payne myself... and wondered is that is part of the game or that darn crackleing again... so any idea where that comes from !???
I wish i would know if that is a issue of a couple of phones... or ALL phones... In other words if i bring it back and get it exchanged will i have the same issue!?

If you use Linux you can convert it to an MPG file using ffmpeg command, it will lower the file size, keep the aspect ratio and quality; that get's rid of the cracking noise in my case.
No, I I am a windows guy..... Would I've to know what the problem is..... So re encoding might help with video files.... But what do I do with games.... Like mentioned.... There must be a better solution, and or?

I have this same issue, especially with Max Payne and Grand Theft Auto 3.
I haven't had the cracking else where, though.
It seems hit or miss so I may take my phone to sprint to try to get it replaced.
Well i would like to know if the hardware is what it is or if this problem is with all EVO ltes....
Sent from my EVO LTE Form tapa talk 2
I've scoured the web, but it seems 50/50 that some people do, some people don't have the issue, so I feel like it's most likely faulty hardware (or people are just putting up with crappy audio, but I find that hard to believe, as we all pay so much for these devices they should work properly, especially with beats audio premium advertisements).
I'll let you know what I find when I go in to the store...
i have it crackle when playing 720p video on my evo. the only video i have is an mp4 and it crackles in every video player except for dice player. but now that i think about it, could it be due to the beats audio eq? im gonna try it without beats and report back.
edit: nope it isn't beats. turned it on and off and tested playing on speaker and through headphones on both and it made no difference. i might go as far as to say that this is a kernel issue since that has a lot to do with video playback. and considering this is a new phone i should be worked out in the future (given that it is in fact a kernel issue)
edit edit: it may also be worth noting that mx player and dice player seem to have no problem playing video as long as you use the software decoding instead of hardware decoding

I tried the same thing, turning beats audio on/off with no change. I haven't played around with video though. I'll give that a shot now. If I run into a problem there and we can't fix it, then this phone's getting replaced for sure. That's not acceptable...

Videos play just fine for me, but anything by Rockstar Games...complete crackly garbage.

also keep in mind that some of the apps may need so changing in order to work. i have seen quite a few apps in the market that after they updated say in the description "evo 4g lte users please uninstall and reinstall to clear up some problems"
so i would give it some time to see if it clears. and like i said i don't think its the phone but rather the kernel because if you play a youtube video or play music through the speaker, its crystal clear. if it was the phones speaker that was damaged then you would hear it all the time rather then in a few apps and while playing movies.

True, good point.
I was worried that perhaps it's some kind of interplay between the gpu and audio systems, as it was predominantly in games.

Anyone forget they have a nexusQ

Watch video podcasts on YouTube and listen to music. The two things it was designed for
I did try cm10.1 for a bit but it was too clunky so I went back to stock.

I use mine daily also. We watched The Hobbit on Saturday and I listen to music. I have three.
I use my everyday for Netflix, youtube, streaming radio, stored music, Google Music, web browsing on my TV.
If only Cm10.1 didn't break the amp so I could still power my sub

Not great on quality, but you can certainly stream from the Nexus Q to a bluetooth receiver and into an AUX port on your stereo system. Otherwise going via HDMI into a receiver allows you to get the full surround effect.
I've collected a few Q's and I'm trying to find ways to still use the stock amp via a bluetooth stream TO the Nexus Q (CM9 Nexus Quantum Singularity?) or disabling the Nexus Q app forced NFC push and enabling stock Android Beam to push songs to the Q. This works great on CM10.1 RC5 for Youtube.
Spare Nexus Q?
If anyone has forgotten about their Q and wants to forget about it on a more permanent basis, let me know as I may just be interested in helping you out with that one
They were never on sale here in the UK and I really want one for a project and for generally geeking around but have yet to be able to get hold of one for a half reasonable price.

I really love my Q Ball and have only took it out the box once or twice never seen a single movie on it yet the light show it produces really looks awesome. I would be willing to let it go for a good trade. Pm me if you ever read this and still are looking for one.
I bet that could happen to me aswell, but prolly not if i had a nexusQ.
Running raspbmc on a raspberry, witch is frequently used, as my media hub..
Would like to see more integration to android devices though.

Android Headunit

Does anyone know of a solution for playing music on a headunit with the Galaxy S4.
I don't want to stream it via Bluetooth, I want a USB only solution for the best audio quality. I haven't been able to find anything as of yet, unfortunately.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Nevermind, I just found out that Pioneer supports MTP over USB with their new 2014 line up. If you're interested you can find it here: pioneerelectronics.(com)/PUSA/Car/CD-Receivers.
Kudos.
Would you be able to play music through an app like spotify or play music... Or only music stored on the device?

With the Pioneer units you can use both. Pandora is the one that they specifically support in their older App Radio/App Mode units. As you might expect, their support for iPhones is much stronger.
You can hack the app radios to mirror your android screen, never looked into this, just wanted to mentiom that cool little tid bit.

Very good question my friend, when I order mine I'll report back. I'll be thoroughly pissed if I can't and I'll certainly be sending Pioneer an angry message for skimping on such an essential feature. Why does it need to be such a headache to get these basic features? /angry.

O I remember when I was once skeptical of audio quality over BT but once you switch to using BT audio in your car...you never go back!
Just an update on things, no dice on the Android head unit. I installed it today and couldn't get it to read my Galaxy S4. I don't have time to fiddle with this crap everytime I get into my car so I'm not wasting energy on this falsely advertised POS.
Look elsewhere if you want a true Android compatible headunit, I'll be on the look out. If anyone has found anything feel free to chime in, I'm frustrated beyond belief. The difficulties to implement one of the most basic features, mind boggling.

You have a double din opening? Why not toss a nexus 7 in there. Not sure what else goes on if you don't want to use bluetooth, but seems you should be able to get audio to an external amp. I'm not buying soon, but I've seen some pretty sweet nexus 7 installs on youtube.

I'm actually installing a Nexus 7 in the stock navigation location (I have a base model without the navigation but the option bezel is there). I'm going to fabricate my own mounts and install the Nexus 7 overhead for navigation and OBD II monitoring.
I want the single-din radio to handle all of my music. I have an iPhone for music that I kept after I bought my Galaxy S4. The audio quality between iPhone USB and auxiliary is night and day and I don't want to sacrifice audio quality.

Netflix audio out of sync.

My Netflix audio has been out of sync since I first got my G3. My network is fine as Netflix works perfectly on PC, iOS devices, Chrome casts etc. The audio seems about 1 second behind the video. Anyone have a solution or have the same problem?
Sent from my VS985 4G using XDA Free mobile app
I typically watch on my chromecast, but the few times I have watched on the phone everything has looked good. If you're running ART try switching back to Dalvik. Other than that, try the typical force stop/restart on the netflix app and then a full on reboot. If it's still laggy then I'm out of ideas.
Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately I've tried all or them. So far
I'll update if u get it fixed. (and yeah casting is fine for me with my phone because it isn't really my phone doing the playback but rather the actual chromecast)

I have been getting the same problem
Maybe its because the image quality is much better than on most other devices that its arriving slower than the audio? That's my best guess. Its not super annoying, the delay is small enough that if you don't pay attention to who is speaking then you cant really tell. But it is noticeable. And if there is a fix that would be awesome.

I have this problem too. Tried downgrading Netflix but no luck. Tried different Roms too and nothing. It's pretty annoying. Funny thing is I don't have these issues with video players or videos streaming from YouTube.
Just found this thread researching this issue. Just got my G3 yesterday day. Everything is still on stock. Anyone notice if other video apps suffer the same problem? I ask because to me it feels like video generally looks a bit like overprocessed motion-interpolated modern tv sets. And if the g3 uses stuff like that it might be related...

Spotify versus Google Play music premium?

Just curious what XDA users prefer.
I've had GPM premium since day of its launch. Love the way it integrates with Google OS.
However, am now just starting to use Spotify premium as well... Seems like the radio and discovery features are way better than Google. Just curious what other Android users are using and why.
The Google app and widget is way better than Spotify, although I'm starting to Digg the music on Spotify more. What do you guys think?
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk 2
I cannot compare their premium services because I never used GPM premium, only in the last few months started using Spotify Premium because it is cheaper in a family plan that we have. However I did use GPM as my music player before for years and I will chip in with my 2 cents by saying that Play Music's app is FAR SUPERIOR. Spotify is just frustrating to use, it looks and functions so outdated. Whoever designed the app is stuck in 2011 with no slidable windows/drawers/menus. And it just takes too long to get somewhere, e.g. full albums list and whatnot. Everything is much more neatly organized in GPM imo and clearly has better UX for me.
Yeah there is no question the Google app is better. For that reason, I think I'm going to use it over Spotify even though the actual music experience might be better on Spotify.
Also, I tend to feel like I'm getting better battery life with the GPM app over Spotify, although curious to hear your reports

Personally I prefer Spotify much more than GPM. An added bonus is that it's cheaper for me, they frequently have deals cutting the price and I only pay half price anyways because I'm a college student.
I've never done comparisons of the battery life, so I can't say anything about that.
Don't get me wrong they are both great, but Spotify takes my pick.
EDIT: I'm talking about the premium versions. I've never used the free version of GPM, so that wouldn't be fair if I tried to give my thoughts on the free spotify.
Personally I prefer Spotify over GPM for non premium use. For premium use I can't really say because I only used Spotify. I can say that the Spotify Linux support is a lot better in my opinion and for a guy like me that has 3 or 4 different distros installed at each time is perfect.

I've used GPM premium for a while waiting for youtube red, but it hasn't come to my country yet.
A friend of mine started using Spotify premium and invited me to 'be part' of his family; it was cheaper since he was dividing the family plan with other 4 so I changed to Spotify.
My experience is similar than that of other users; Spotify lacks functionality. GPM is far better in this aspect, seriouly; sometimes it's irritating how dumb the Spotify app can be. IMO Spotify have slightly better Playlists, and it has the convenience of controlling music playing on your pc from your phone (I don't know if GPM has it, maybe it does). Other thing is that everybody uses Spotify, sometimes it has its conveniences (like sharing playlists).
Anyway, sometimes I think in returning to use GPM. Maybe the best is for you to use both and decide for yourself.
