Without root or unlocking, can you downgrade firmware? - AT&T HTC One (M8)

I'm running 4.4.3 on my HTC One M8 for AT&T and I want to downgrade to 4.4.2 if possible. I didn't root my device nor unlock the bootloader yet. Just wondering if that's a possibility. Thank you! :highfive:

Yes you can, just make sure that you get the appropriate RUU for your phone and USB debugging is turned on. You will use adb for this, so make sure you have a decent knowledge and understanding of it beforehand.

Ah yes I know how adb works and thank you. I kept trying to use the RUU through SD card but kept failing when it tried. I'll do it on the computer then, thank you!

Incorrect. You can't "downgrade" by RUU if s-on. It will fail version check, as the OP has found out.
So no, you can't "downgrade" on a stock device.
Also, this should have been posted in the Q&A section. I've notified the mods to have it moved.

Ah, I was mistaken. You can downgrade if you had a custom recovery installed, according to this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/how-to-m8-hong-kong-downgrade-s-to-s-off-t2852368

After flashing the newer update, my bluetooth car stereo fails to resume music with any music app. I went back to old firmware, and bluetooth works just fine, I had same results wiht another blueooth device. I drive a car, motorcycle, and ride the train on my daily commute. Taking the phone out of my jeans while driving is a pain in the the rear end, even more when using gloves in this crazy cold weather. I tried different radios, factory reset on newer firmware with no luck. Did a lot of searching and asked questions, but seems like there is no many people streaming music to bluetooth devices. Any other suggestions? Now that I'm on vacation, I'm gonna start from scratch again to see if I get any luck.

See if your stereo head unit has a way to re-initialize or reset to default settings. If so, then do it, and re-pair the phone after the re-initialization.
This is what did it for me, after all manners of messing with the phone.
I have to do this every time I flash a new ROM on the phone. Subaru Impreza 2012 factory head unit, which my understanding is made by Kenwood.

As far as I've heard, that method doesn't work, and never did. Or very limited success.
Its also risky to flash hboot files from dodgy sources, when a much safer method (sunshine s-off) exists. With s-off, you can then downgrade by RUU.

I need some help, and as I always say I don't ask for help unless I really can't find a solution. I tried unlocking my bootloader using the HTCDev method, but when I try to flash the unlock code bin file it gets stuck saying its sending and never moves. Same happened weeks back with my HTC Mytouch 4g Slide and I had somehow got it to work after fiddling here and there. I have HTC Sync uninstalled (I even reinstalled it to uninstall it again and keep the drivers) and I even eliminated my PDANet which seems to cause issues in situations like this. Rebooted my computer literally over 10 Times, same bull. I just can't remember how I got it working on my MyTOUCH. SO...I'm on hboot 2.09 and was wondering if these files would downgrade the hboot or something. All drivers seem to be proper, so I don't see why I'm having issues. I'm familiar with the adv and fastboot tools, I even made the android folder on the main harddrive directory that every post recommends , have the unlock_code.bin there but its the issue of not pushing. I have an old PC but if it worked on my MyTOUCH at one point I doubt it has anything to do with it.
So I wanted to know if its possible to downgrade the hboot to use a different method.
The method of rooting the phone is the same regardless of Hboot, so downgrading won't help you. Click the link in my sig and go to the section that contains the bootloader unlocking tools. Click on the WinDroid toolkit and see if you have any luck with that, instead.

Not root, unlocking the bootloader. It says Sending and never does a thing. It should say Okay immediately after pushing the file but its not doing anything for me. Its supposed to quickly give you a disclaimer on your phone to select whether or not to unlock the BL, but all my phone does is sit in fastboot mode. So I wanted to know if these stock restore things can downgrade the HBOOT as well so I can unlock it in a different manner instead of HTCDev's method. I've been stuck with a locked bootloader for a week since purchasing this phone. My MyTouch4g slide had the same issue but I had done something that got it going, in this case, I've tried everything. Also these self made executable programs like WinDroid give me a "not a valid Win32 application" message on my laptop. They just won't run at all.

There is no other method to unlock the bootloader aside from HTC Dev. Doesn't matter what Hboot version you're on or what software version you have. Even programs like regaw_leinad's toolkit uses HTC Dev-it just automates the entire process.

Hmm come to think of it your right I have seen the scripts mention HTCDev. So what can I do to get it to flash that Unlock_code.bin? HTC Sync is uninstalled, PDANet is also gone, the drivers have been left behind. My device does show up as a fastboot device and the Device Manager shows the phone as MyHTC when on fastboot, what am I missing? Its all set but just stays there...

No LOL went outside for a second. I would definitely let you help, BUT I'm using an OLD Dell laptop. So old I think cavemans existed when it was invented. My HP is in repair. Bought it new, came faulty, sent for repair. Came back, new issues, right back to HP, so I'm using this wifiless crap for now. I haven't bothered buying it a WiFi adaptor since its so darn old. I mean what can be done with 128mb of ram? Imagine.
It has USB 1.0 ports, I read some discussions that it maybe the case, but the same was said about my old MyTouch 4G Slide and the token went thru eventually.

[Q] Help Updating Unlocked AT&T HTC One x+ to Android 4.2.2

Hello guys, This is my first post on these forums so excuse me if I'm not posting on the right thread.
Recently I purchased an HTC One X+ from AT&T and unlocked it with an unlock code I got from them.
Since the 4.2.2 android update for my HOX+ is out I want to install it, but everytime I click "Check for Updates" nothing happens. It just looks for updates and that's it, it sends me back to the "Check for updates" screen and nothing pops up.
I was wondering if I could update my device manually through my PC or something because I really want the new android version.
I currently live at Mexico, which is why I unlocked it.
I'd really appreciate some help, thanks in advance.
P.S I'm kinda new to android devices but I WILL do everything I can to provide you guys with information about my device if necessary.
EDIT: I'm downloading Sync Manager, I just read somewhere that I can perform software updates to my phone with it... heh, I didn't know that, dumb me. I just hope it works.
EDIT2: aaaaaand apparently sync manager doesn't do ****. lmao, Help please?
I was in your position a few months ago, I'm not in the states so I wasnt able to get the 4.2 update, I had to unlock bootloader. root, flash a recovery, make a back up in recovery mode and flash a custom ROM..
This was very helpful:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2066390
I'm currently running MagioRom and I love it!
Ensure you make a back up in Recovery Mode before flashing.

Once the RUU is re-released by HTC you can use that to update to 4.2.2 and Sense 5. By unlocked do you mean sim unlocked or bootloader unlocked? If you are bootloader unlocked you will need to relock before you can run the RUU. Either way the RUU is the only way to update since you are not on AT&T's network and it will wipe your phone completly so back up everything you want to keep.
Thanks a lot for your answers! By unlocked I meant SIM unlocked, so, I WILL have to root and all that stuff to get 4.2.2? Hm, Oh well, if HTC re-releases the RUU I'll have to install it the same way?... Any good ways of backing up my stuff? Thanks in advance c:

The new RUU should be released soon, they just need to fix a problem with the one they released and then took off the website.
If you root in the mean time you will need to relock your bootloader before you can run the RUU. I backed up my SD card(virtual SD card) simply by installing the HTC drivers then plugging in the USB cable then copy the folder to a location on your computer.

If you are rooted you can't run the RUU you have to have a locked bootloader to run the RUU. Once it is available just download it and run it on your computer(windows computer) then follow the directions. You will need the HTC drivers installed and yes it will wipe everything.

about to brick my phone???

alright so heres the deal. im on my second one max after selling my first one foolishly! anyway this one has hboot 2.49 and it has been a NIGHTMARE to s-off. NOTHING has worked. drivers installed, uninstalled, anti virus uninstalled, installed, everything i can think of. anyway i did some searching around and found this..http://androidcure.com/unbrick-htc-one-max-stock-firmware/ i do assume this is a european rom but the guts of the phone are the same. im wondering if this will lower the hboot to previous version as well.
thoughts? am i gonna brick my phone?
prompt replies appreciated
Always remember on a HTC one m7 if you tried flashing a hboot to down grade without being soff I think you ran the risk of bricking. Any more info on phone is it rooted boot loader unlocked. Are you using firewater. if you enter adb devices does the device show. Is it on a stock Rom. Have you tried temp root and firewater route. Etc

Help recover my Evo 4G LTE

I would like to start out with saying that I am not new to rooting/roms but a lot has changed since I went to iOS. I have TWRP accessible and I can push files to my /sdcard/
I have tried several rooms but all of them fail to install.
Can someone please tell me the steps I need to take to go back to either stock or have another ROM working? (RUU fails as well, however it does detect the phone)
Any help is appreciated and trust me I spent hours reading threads so not just posting this for an easy way out.

First, this should probably be in the Q&A section
Second, gonna need WAY more info about your phone. I assume you're rooted? S-off or S-on? What hboot version are you on? What version of TWRP are you currently using? What ROM are you on now? What RUU are you trying to use? Gonna have to give a little bit for us to work with.
Edit: Your signature also says you have the Evo Shift? Are you on the write forum?

Is your goal to flash another ROM or to go back to stock?
If you're going to be trying to flash another ROM I'd highly recommend running rumrunner and getting s-off. Otherwise there are a lot of hoops you'll need to jump through in order to flash ROMs (for starters, you'll need to flash the kernel separately).

Whichever one is faster, I just want the phone up and running again.
So it's not running at all now? I'm assuming you can boot into bootloader and recovery but nothing else, right? You can run an RUU while in fastboot if I recall, which will give you at least a usable phone. That's also probably the fastest thing to do.
After that I'd highly recommend using rumrunner to get s-off. Otherwise flashing new ROMs will be a bear.

So it's not running at all now? I'm assuming you can boot into bootloader and recovery but nothing else, right? You can run an RUU while in fastboot if I recall, which will give you at least asable phone. That's also probably the fastest thing to do.

RUU fails with errors and it gets stuck at "HTC" screen
Do you have HTC Sync installed on your computer?

Ah, I think something else made me delete it.
That'll do it. You need to have HTC Sync and all of the necessary drivers to run the RUU

D'oh! I bet your bootloader is still unlocked. It needs to be relocked before running the RUU.
Fastboot command 'fastboot oem lock' ought to do the trick.

You're a life saver! at least you can bet I have rooting/unrooting down for this EVO. Just like the old times
Moved to Q&A forum

How to remove "Development Purposes" text on boot.

Just updated to the 4.4.3 OTA then rooted flashed TWRP and install Venom One ROM. Now I get that annoying message on boot. My OCD is drving me nuts! found a few tutorials about flashing fastboot, but they all seem pretty old. Not sure if theres an update or an easy to fallow tutorial using adb or an AIO software. Thanks.
Need to wait for hboot to be modded to have that removed

Ah okay thanks. Wasnt sure if Hboot was universal or if it was by build.
2.23.503.2 ota? If not s-off cannot flash firmware...if s-off the hboot has been modified already. Link is located in my thread in the at&t m8 section

I'm on build 2.22.401.5 running VenomOne rom, S-Off, rooted all the good stuff. Will your hboot mod work for mine?
if on an att device its been discussed many times to use the appropriate firmware for us devices...2.22.1540.3/.4 is latest developer edition device firmware, 2.23.502.3 is latest for att devices...imo use one of those packages @firmware instead of euro.

Hey Cavy..I got a couple of questions for you, if you don't mind. Were you completely stock after taking the 4.4.3 update? I just received my update a couple of days ago and I'm thinking about taking the plunge and rooting. How did you go about rooting and flashing Venom One? Thanks for your help!

Yeah I was completely stock after updating. To root I used the AIO toolkit found here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699065) Once youre rooted reboot into recovery and make a backup. Then download the ViperOne rom here (http://venomroms.com/htc-one-m8/) copy the zip folder onto your SD or internal storage and reboot into recovery again and flash the ViperOne zip folder.

You don't need to root if you are going to flash a custom ROM right away. Unlock bootloader, install custom recovery, then put the custom ROM on the phone and flash it.
So the toolkit still works?? Thought I read somewhere the 4.4.3 patched something. Are you also S-OFF??

It was just easier for me to fallow a set of instructions going step by step than jumping around just to avoid 1 easy step.

Yeah still works, you might of read that Firewater for some people doesnt work on 4.4.3. For me Firewater worked and I'm S-Off for some people it doesnt and you have to use Sunshine in that case.

I highly recommend doing it manually and steering clear of toolkits. Using a toolkit robs you of an important learning opportunity, and leaves you with little understanding of the processes. Skills and knowledge that are important when things don't go quite right (which will inevitably happen).

I agree and that's the route I'm trying to take, however just need a bit more of a solid guide to lean on. I haven't messed around with adb or pushed anything via fastboot since my One X. Don't want to end up with a fancy paper weight.

If you did it on your One X, its really not any different on the M8. Actually, probably a good deal easier if you had the AT&T One X (EVITA), since that phone required temp root and SuperCID to unlock the bootloader, for the most part.
In short:
-Go to HTCDev.com to unlock the bootloader. The website walks you though step-by-step, so there is really nothing to that part.
- Use adb to flash your recovery of choice (TWRP or CWM)
- Flash SU/SuperSU or flash a custom ROM
-S-off, if you want
- That's it!

I definitely did have the evita. Had to alter the cid to make htc dev believe it was a different phone or something like that, if I remember correctly.
S-ON really is only if I want to mess with different radios, right? All I want is xposed and and maybe some cm 11 or gpe once Android L is out.
Well, sounds easy enough. I will be attempting later tonight after work. Thanks for all of your help. If it's OK, mind if I PM you if something goes wrong?

S-off is needed to flash radio, hboot, SIM unlock, and some other things. But not for root or to flash ROMs. Pretty much similar to how things were on the EVITA; with the exception that boot.img will flash automatically along with the ROM (not possible on most hboots on the EVITA, and had to be flashed manually with fastboot).
It sounds like you are already on the "official" 2.23 software (Android 4.4.3) by OTA? If so, you don't need to update firmware (radio, hboot, etc.) as the OTA already updated it. Otherwise, s-off is needed to flash the firmware manually; which is pretty much required for any 2.xx Sense based custom ROMs (otherwise there will be serious bugs like very long boot times, broken WiFi, Bluetooth). While s-off is not strictly needed to flash the ROM (it will flash correctly) things just won't run right if firmware is outdated. This is the only reason you would "need" to have s-off for flashing ROMs. AOSP and GPE ROMs won't suffer this issue.
But if you are already on the new OTA, this isn't an issue for flashing any ROM. You can verify by looking at the hboot version and baseband. If you are on hboot 3.18 and baseband 1.19; your firmware is up to date, and won't be an issue for running any ROMs.

I actually prefer you just posting to the forums. Either to an existing relevant thread, or start a new one if a relevant one does not already exist.
Couple reasons for this:
- Info given to you can help others reading the forums, and benefit the community as a whole instead of being hidden away in PM
- You can get help from more than just one user. I don't claim to even remotely know everything, and often its helpful to have more than one set of eyes on a problem (especially the tougher ones). And I might not even be online to help.
In particular for the 2nd point: my wife and I are going to be having a baby, with scheduled induction tomorrow (Sept. 5) unless it happens by itself sooner. So I won't be available to help you when that happens, anyway!
In any case, good luck!
