Used my gear s alone to stream music in gym - Samsung Gear S

Kind of neat, but I tried an experiment today. With my Gear S totally disconnected I streamed Milk music over data at my gym. I was impressed with the reception, better than my Note 4 and iPhone 6+. The battery died FAST, I went from 100% to zero in about 2 hours. It was great and I'm impressed with the functionality, I didn't have to worry about my phone in the gym or damaging it.

That's pretty cool. I wish there was something we could do to improve battery drain when used as standalone. Maybe they will come out with an os update to help with that. Can't hurt to hope.

2 hours of streaming music on a tiny little 300ma battery is not good enough?

What I meant was, that in standalone mode it does drain battery quite a bit faster than when linked to your phone by Bluetooth only. True that for such a small battery it does really good but I believe it could do a little better with some software tweaks. I keep mine linked to my Note 4 by Bluetooth and at the end of the day I usually around 65-70% left. I'm not sure it would last all day in standalone mood. I think standby needs to conserve a little more juice. All and all I'm very happy with mine. Haven't taken it off since I got it,and I got mine the weekend it hit stores.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Premium HD app

I forgot to mention I was also streaming to Bluetooth headphones. So streaming music over 3g, a fairly weak 3g signal at that (gym is in a big metal hangar) and streaming that over to Bluetooth headphones. I was pretty impressed to have gotten those 2 hours. It was also nice to not have to worry about dropping my phone in the gym.

I use my S for the gym on wifi.I turn mobile off and gps. I go from 100 to 60 in 3 hours.

Yeah I'm sure the 3g burns a lot of juice. I wish I had WiFi at my gym.

This is the main reason I am thinking about this smart watch. Still haven't decided if I want to get it or not. Not a fan of Samsung and tizen.

Battery life so far - moderate usage

My battery life so far. WiFi on while at apartment since I have spotty connection. Used GPS for about 20 min and listened to Pandora for 1.75hrs. Brightness auto at 40%. Using fast dormancy .apk enabled.
I feel like this is pretty good batt life for moderate usage. Maybe this will give some sort of base to someone who feels they have a bad battery.
Ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

Screen on time is there on one of the better battery stats pictures (last one and towards the end of the picture). It is at 2 hours 4 minutes at that percentage point.

Wait isn't fast dormancy suppose to be .apk disabled? Its enabled by default meaning your suppose to disable to actually disable fast dormancy.

That's normal, 6.5hrs of screen on time with wifi on and the phone being on for about 7.5hrs is good. If you are getting 3-5hrs throughout a day, I myself, consider that fine.

Basically, as soon as I pulled it out of the box, I drain the battery until it turns itself off, then recharge from there. I do this cycle for at least a full week...drain to empty, charge to full.....I actually did it for about 10 days with this device. Essentially, I treat it like an old ni-cad battery for that first week.
There is absolutely NO science or expertise behind this. I know a lot of people say that lithium batteries don't require it and it doesn't affect it, but its something I do....and it definitely can't hurt.
Except only that it does hurt Li-on and Li-Po batteries
There is an article on battery University about this

My battery life has been awesome so far. I don't charge my phone at night so I like to go to sleep with it how it is. I consistently lose maybe 1% a night. Standby on my GS3 killed my battery.

Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
Maybe I'm not doing enough to drain my battery, seem to be getting excellent life without a battery app...or could be because I'm comparing to my Thunderbolt! Lol
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
I tried it but uninstalled it rather quickly. I didn't even have it installed long enough to tell how much difference it made.
After it got out of its "learning" phase, it consistently turned off my GMail push notifications, despite telling it not to, and turned my wifi on all the time. I was getting 2 days of battery life with the phone without the app, so I figured it wasn't worth the effort for me.
re
I have been using it for 5 days and I agree, it works fairly well besides WiFi. Any savings seem to be offset by the constant turning on. Try putting a WiFi widget on your homescreen and manually controlling WiFi, and let the app do everything else.

What exactly is bad about the wifi control? Does turning off at night stop you from getting notifications (ie. email)?
I actually prefer to be on wifi since I'm on a limited shared plan.
I have been using it for over a month and have had no issues with wifi. I usually finish the day with over 60% battery left. That is 13 hours before i put it on the charger.

big difference prior to using the app?
I actually just leave wifi on.. maybe that's why I only get 3 hours of screen time versus other people who get 4 or 5..
I uninstalled it a couple minutes ago lol. Makes my Google Now notifications that tell me when to leave like an hour late. Not cool :crying:
Not to mention how annoying it is to connect to the WiFi at my local McDonalds because it's called "dlink," the default name, which makes my phone "learn" to connect to every dlink. Ugh.
Mine has been in learning mode for like 2 weeks now... I don't know what the deal is... Doesn't really seem to be doing anything at all if you ask me.

Qualcomm Snapdragon BatteryGuru

Qualcomm released an app for anyone with Snapdragon that will extend your battery life and monitor what you do to better control the processes. I just downloaded it and it is in "Learning mode" so I will be excited to see how much savings I get when it has learned and starts saving.

Well, I feel it does its job well. The point is to be efficient as possible depending in usage. No matter what, it isn't gonna give you hours of extra on screen time. I feel its main purpose is to manage the battery better when ur NOT using ur phone. So far, I haven't used my phone much other then to read some texts, emails and xda and this is what my battery looks like right now.
Best day Ive had was a 21 hour day with moderate usage (YouTube, texting, emails, minor gaming). That was after letting batteryguru was out of learning mode.

Last day without Battery Guru I had 7% remaining after 15 hours and 53 minutes. First day post-learning mode, I had 13% remaining after 15 hours and 49 minutes with 3 hours and 3 minutes of screen on time. Sadly, I didn't have the correct app to determine how much screen on time I had on the first measurement, but I use my phone about the same way every day.
My biggest complaint with Battery Guru is it forces WiFi on when I'm on the road. I'm not seeing a big enough improvement to get excited about and think that me just toggling WiFi on my own will be just as effective.
On a side note, my daughters phone had 3 hours of screen on time and her phone lasted only 11 hours. She has the Droid Razr HD which comes with a 2530 mAh battery whereas the DNA only has 2020 mAh. Quite impressive for the DNA especially considering the larger, true HD screen and quad core processor.

Guys please provide a screen-on time when posting screenshots. It helps a lot more than just looking percentages.
Both my mega i9205s get between 4 and 5 hours of screen on time with about 20 hours of standby time consistently. That's with either wifi or hspa+ constantly on, full screen brightness, sync, air view, full volume and full haptic feedback, alot of gaming and browsing, plus calling and streaming videos and music's to my cars stereo.

I'm really happy with battery life in general - very good with intensive use.
The only disappointment is the standby time with minimal use. At times I want my phone to stay in standby for as long as possible (times when I disable all mobile data/Wi-Fi and pretty don't use it at all so no screen use as well) and this is where Mega fails big way. With such big battery I would expect it could go for at least as long as my Note did, but it won't do any more than 2,5 days (where my Note at times could go for 5 days).
Are you guys seeing the same thing? I've seen somewhere on the web the same thing mentioned and a remark that a software update may resolve this issue. Apparently something to do with excessive battery drain by the cellular network module.

Real measurements are whatever YOU use the phone for. I don't get LTE at home so wifi is all I have. If you want a "real" test turn the brightness up all the way and steam videos. Your statement makes no sense.
Makes perfect sense. I have unlimited like tons of other people. Its a phone. Not a tablet. You're not going to be 24/7 on WiFi. To measure real battery is to be on a tower. Not your home internet.

Looking at some of your stats it seems like Chrome is a battery hog
It's used 15% of my battery so far compared to 26% for the screen being on 3 hours.
Im impressed with the quickness of the charging time. All results below consist of 40% of the time screen at full brightness, and 40% of the time at min brightness and overall average at about 60% brightness.
Drain:
Total use: 13h 52m
From 5% to off went about 25 minutes 4G streaming the Avengers from Netflix at min brightness. A rate of around 5 minutes to each 1% of battery life. (Image1)
Also impressed with the flatline seen here, that was sleep time from 3am to 9am, glad to see it consumed no power (coming from Thunderbolt so this is new for me) (Image2)
Charging:
Total Charge: 2h 20m
With the phone off, from 0 to 61% took 1 hour:laugh:, from 61% to 100% the phone was turned on and mostly idle with the display off other than missing a call and having to make a call - all on 4G took 1 hour and 20 minutes. (Image3)
I had about 4-5 hours of Pandora streaming during all this as well.
Wanted to embed pics but new here so cant post outside links. Overall happy with the battery and power managment with heavy use.
