[Q] Unbrick a i9100 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My friend has been using his Galaxy s2 for over quite some time and suddenly it froze during the bootscreen. It has been a clean version without anything warrenty-voiding stuff on it...
He asked me to look it up and i managed to get the phone into Download mode (Recovery mode wasn't working)
First time i tried to flash everyting over again on my Windows with Odin without using PIT files, after that i went into Ubuntu and still no luck..
At last i went back to Odin, flashing with PITfiles. When i tried this my PC froze and after a few hours i decided to reboot my phone. When i tried to get it back into download mode i just got a blank screen. no Download mode, no Recovery mode and so on. Even when i plug my phone into the wallcharger nothing happens.
Is there anything i still can try to get his phone up and running again?
Thanks in advance!

Did you tick repartition phone when you were flashing the pit files? Are you trying to use stock rom or custom rom? Stock rom requires the system size to be at defaults so make sure to flash a stock size pit. Otherwise, make sure you factory reset and wipe cache partition if you are trying to flash custom rom.

It was a stock rom i used with the stock pit.
The problem is i couldn't (and still cant) get into recovery mode. I could (not anymore) get into Download mode.
Do you have other thoughts?

Have you tried a USB jig? See if your phone reacts too it. Since you can't get to download mode, you hard bricked your phone (assume your chsrging port is still ok). Were you running ics or JB?

It was running on ICS, I will try the USB jig ASAP and i will get back to ya!
Thanks for now

Still not working..
Trying an USB jig didnt put the phone into download mode. I bought one online and also tested it on my phone. It did work on mine but doesnt on the bricked S2. Is there also something else I can try now?
Regards,
Orlando

I had exactly the same problem. The phone had to be JTAG restored. This process isn't for the feint of heart to say the least.
Google "JTAG i9100" and watch some Youtube vids.

[READ THIS] Got a Boot Loop? Don't post a New Thread!

OK so it seems a lot of people are having issues with boot loops when they are messing around with things. First thing. Your phone is NOT bricked or broken.
It's just unable to start due to something missing or broken. Don't panic, there's no issue. I did this the day I got my phone, and there was nobody to "help" as such, so I just fixed it myself.
These are the steps to fix a boot loop. If you do this correctly, it WILL fix it. But you must do it EXACTLY to the letter.
So here we go...
1) Turn off your phone. Unplug it from your computer etc
2) Hold down home, power, and volume UP. This will enter recovery mode. If you are using CF-Root, you'll get CWM recovery. If not, you get stock recovery. It doesn't matter which appears.
3) Choose to wipe user data from the menu.
4) Turn off the phone by long-pressing the power button.
5) Prepare ODIN on your PC by using task manager to kill any KIES processes, then open ODIN.
6) Put your phone into download mode (home + power + volume down)
7) Plug your phone into the computer using the factory USB cable. The leftmost box should go yellow and an ID number will appear.
8) Flash a stock ROM from those available in ODIN format, and the phone will boot correctly.
Alternatively, it is possible to flash VillainROM 1.1 if you are not comfortable in wiping via recovery, or if you cannot do so for any reason (corrupted kernel etc), as it wipes all users data when installing. Simply ignore steps 2 to 4, and flash VillainROM 1.1 via ODIN instead of the stock ROM.
Any questions about boot loops? Ask them here rather than making new threads.
Adding a nice little video from user "dullah"

You're a great, I risked a heart attack!
noted with thx, I wish i had the correct instruction 3 days ago.
one more question, do we have to do one more step to flash the stock kernel after we flash the stock rom?
I plug the phone into the pc, but my drivers dont seem to be working it fails to be recognised. I tried with another Galaxy S II, and this phone does appear on the pc. Im thinking its because my phone isnt in download mode?
Any ideas?
Legend, thank god for this topic

You can also try just 1 2 3 & 4 and see if phone boots .
Its done just that for me as i try to clear a bootloop from a wipe to stock .
jje
I had it myself and i was pretty happy that i uses the backup function from recoverymode cwm.
I would really really recommend that u use this BEFORE doing any critical changes to your phone.
I have a Boot loop after doing a full reset, It was installed with lightning rom
Now Odin doesnt recognize my phone, thats bacause i'm on other computer now (havnt installed the drivers jet)... i tried installing kies 2.0, didnt help... any suggestions?
Edit: is there no manually way to install you phone on you computer with manual drivers or something.... it's bacause odin still doesnt recognize my phone
EDIT2: I fixed my problem, for everyone that had same issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956 => these drivers work
I have done all the instructions and flashed with a stock rom with odin but my phone still does the boot loop any suggestions?
Edit: fixed it with the villainrom, sorry for my post
thx!

I also got the boot loop. Here what i have been done:
1.flash villain rom.
2.want to change to lite'ning rom = boot loop
3.clear into factory data reset and flash stock rom = success
4.i still want to use lite'ning rom and flash it = boot loop
5.clear into factory data reset and flash lite'ning = boot loop
Is it somethin wrong with the villain rom or lite'ning rom?

If when connecting phone to your pc and your phone is ON then download the latest version of kies from samsung as this holds the drivers to connect to your computer properly.
If you are talking about when your phone is OFF and using ODIN then it should pick up your phone but you wont be able to flash until you are in download mode.
only other thing id add is try using a different usb port, one that is like a mainboard port not a hub.

Jep having same issues, not really an issue but i'm also stuck with the villain rom If i try to flash it with lighting rom i have boot loop
this all has started with a full factory reset, when I was on the lightning rom, the full factory reset caused my bootloop and ever sence the only rom that works on my phone is the villain rom
Exactly same happens to me
I have literom v1.0 I cant flash 1.1 or even flash stock rom without boot loops
Guys it seems there's an issue with some custom ROMs. VillainROM seems fine, as people can safely return to it.
If you cannot get a ROM to flash, then instead of flashing a custom ROM at the end of the process, ODIN a stock ROM after the wipe. That should fix the issue.
It appears some custom ROMs have a bug with wrong permissions, preventing the system from booting.

Yes, it appears lightning rom can't cope with a full wipe when it's running. VR is set up to work after the full wipe, provided you re-install it via ODIN

Yes, that won't work, as the ROMs are not compatible. You would need to get Lightning ROM to fix the issue

[Q] Broken recovery, bad kernel, and id10t error

Last week I flashed LD3 for my Galaxy S2 i777. Today I was going to flash CM9. Every time I tried to boot into recovery it just started the phone.
I figured I could use mobile odin to flash a new kernel and it would fix it. Like an idiot I used a Gingerbread kernel on my phone running an ICS rom. So of course my phone froze on the "Galaxy S2" screen.
I couldn't boot into recovery and freaked out because I couldn't boot into dl either. I ordered a jig but kept fiddling in the meantime. I found that if I hook my phone to the USB, wait for the battery charging icon, take the battery out, then hold the down button it would boot into dl mode. Then I had to put the battery back in before I clicked continue or else it just reset.
Ok, so got into DL mode. I grabbed the stock rom and kernel from XDA site and flashed them with Odin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432 (can't post links yet).
The phone starts and setup mode begins. It shows the android figure and says click it. Now all kinds of errors pop up telling me different google services weren't working and force close. When you click the android figure it goes to setup wizard screen but nothing happens (except more android service errors).
Can someone help me out here? I've been at it 5 hours and searched this forum high and low. My thought is there are some ICS elements left behind in there it is trying to load, but I could be way off.
I still can't boot into recovery mode, just DL.

Did you do a full wipe before flashing the stock rom and kernel?
I did not do a full wipe. How can I go about that without logging into recovery? I'm googling that now but if you have linkage I would appreciate it.

dont need to wipe when using Odin/Heimdall.
To OP:
there is only factory recovery, no CWM, you could always just flash a kernal from the DEV section, get CWM, flash CM9.
If I flash another kernel wouldn't I still have the same problem? I'll go ahead and give it a shot. Any you recommend for any reason or other?

So let me get the straight...you're on unrooted stock right now? If that's true, you should:
1. Do a factory reset from settings.
2. Use Odin to flash the Stock with Root package.
3. Use Mobile Odin to flash either Entropy's DD or Siyah.
4. Use CWM to flash what you want after that.

recovery is in kernal. If you flash a kernal from the DEV section you'll get CWM recovery, then you can flash your CM9 that you wanted, after a wipe data/factory reset.

Yes, but if he flashes said kernel with Odin, it'll trip his flash counter. I'm just telling him the safe way to do it, Mobile Odin.
I've already tripped my counter. I have a jig that will be here tomorrow so I can use it to reset the counter.
I can't use mobile odin because I can't log into my phone. I can only use desktop Odin.
All the files I am digging up look like .zip made for cwm. Could someone help guide me towards a kernel I can flash from desktop?

Either Entropy's DD or Siyah. You can open the zip and extract the zimage; the zimage is the kernel.
I just tried using Syiah:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367800&highlight=cf-root
I still get this message:
"The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. please try again"
I can't get past the setup screen.
And I still can't access recovery.

Flash the return to stock package from Odin again. Something must have gone wrong with it the first time.
well thats wierd. Sorry man but are you doing it right?
vol down and power. hold it untill the screen flashes twice.
I flashed stock 3 times now. I couldn't get into recovery before this (manually or with rom manager) and still can't. It starts like its going into recovery then just resets and loads normally.
Down is for dl mode, up is recovery.
I think the lack of ability to boot into recovery and the android service errors may be related.

Forget recovery. You shouldn't be worrying about recovery until after you get your phone booting.
New thought: maybe your download of the stock package is corrupted. Try to download it on your computer again. Download the one with root. If that fixes it, you can go use Mobile Odin to flash the Siyah kernel.
To get into recovery hold down both volume up, volume down, and power button and don't let go until recovery comes up.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA
I have been using the rooted. The fully stock won't dl. This started because I flashed a gb kernel instead of ics. Maybe I should try flashing an ics kernel instead of stock gb?

[Q] Download Mode Recovery Issue

Hello, I wanted to add my previous Issue I had before running into this problem.
I currently need to fix a issue ASAP as I am selling my s3 soon. I tried to unroot my s3 and reset it to factory settings but flashed the Verizon firmware on my phone and not the international version firmware. The flash failed in Odin and now I am stuck at a screen saying the Firmware upgrade encountered an error. Please try again. I tried to go into download and recovery mode multiple times and cannot do so. I assume is bricked or soft bricked? Can I use a usb jig to get into download mode?

After purchasing a USB JIG, I can now get into Download mode, but the issue is every time I try to install a stock firmware, I am stuck in Recovery mode. The binary count on the phone says "18", but I am not sure if that has anything to do with it. Please help, thank you. My phone is the I9300.
So the stock ROM installs without errors?
Have you done a factory reset from recovery afterwards?
This should be fixable unless the firmware you flashed also included a bootloader

No, the stock ROM cannot install, every time I try to install the ROM, it gets stuck in Odin says "Recovery". I cannot get into the phone because it will still show the firmware error if I unplug the usb jig from the usb download mode.
Have you tried Kies if you want to return to stock, start Kies and go to Tools > Firmware Upgrade and Installation
Follow the instructions on the screen, this is supposed to completely reset the phone and install the latest firmware version for that phone

[q] help - touch screen doesn't work!

Hi,
I have a Galaxy S3 I9300.
I tried to flash a stock rom a couple of days ago and something went wrong.
Now my touch screen doesn't respond, it's the weirdest thing, I guess I flashed a corrupted file with Odin.
Anyway, I couldn't enter recovery mode (the phone kept roobting when I tried), I managed to flash the CWM recovery and now I can enter recovery mode.
I could flash a rom via external SD card, but still no luck, now I have paranoid, but still the only buttons that work are the home and shutdown (physical buttons) the touch screen just doesn't respond...
What can I do ???

If you can get back to recovery now then try download mode too and reflash your countrys/carriers original firmware to what it was before. Then re-root and flash philz recovery and then a custom ROM from the internalSD.

I've tried so many ROM's to repair that I'm not sure regarding which one is the corrupted one...
I'm almost sure it was downloaded from the link in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2187081
Before flashing a new ROM boot to recovery and manually wipe cache partition and dalvik and format data/system/cache from mounts and storage. After that the phone wont reboot so pull the battery and put it back in and boot to download mode then flash via Odin. Also try Odin v1.85 too.Ive used both v1.85 and v3.07 and sometimes had issues with the newer one.
try this with a different firmware than the first one you used.

So, I have done what you suggested.
And now, the left bottom 'menu' button work!
it's not a physical button, and It didn't work before.
I know it sound crazy, but this is the situation.
I've tried doing it a few times more, and nada, still the same..
I've tried more roms, but nothing seems to help...
Any ideas anyone ?
Sounds like damage to the hardware from flashing a rom not for this phone .
Good point from JJEgan mate. What was the ROM you flashed to your phone and is your phone an i9300 or i9305?.Maybe another varient..?.Makes a big difference.

I have the international I9300.
All the stock rom's that I tried contained '9300' in their name...
the custom roms that I tried were Paranoid and Cyanogenmod.. I was pretty careful regarding the exact model type.
I think maybe at one time I accidentally plugged out the phone while odin was in the reset stage and didn't get to PASS yet.
Can this explain the symptoms ?
If indeed there is a hardware problem, is it fixable or should I begin grieving ?
Flash stock rom via Odin .
Post at what point it fails .
If you unplug your phone in Odin mode you could kill it.Atleast it was at the end.You said you have formatted and reflashed again and I guess that about all you can do but do it a couple more times with your countrys firmware just to make sure.Keep an eye on the flash bar on Odin an watch to see if anything doesnt flash or skips.
I hope you didn't flash a note 2 rom (i and some other users flashed the kernel of note2 and the digitizer was dead), you can read in one of my posts and I'm sure there are other users. Not so many but still.

[Q] Boot problem

Hello, first of all I would like to say that this is my first thread as I just made the account and also that English is not my native language so please overlook any mistakes I make . Now I am writing this thread because I have a problem with my Samsung Galaxy SII. +-3 days ago I tried to root it, used Odin, also tried flashrootkit or whats its name, but Im not sure if my phone got rooted.. In Odin it said PASS and I also managed to install SuperSu and CWM but when I tried to run some apps it said something about the device not being rooted.. However, thats not my problem, the problem is that today I tried to factory reset my phone in spite of having full memory of apps and just wanted to start with clear memory ( I backed up my music and pictures to my PC). But after doing factory reset, the phone started and I was going through the whole process of selecting language and wifi spots and so on.. but then suddenly my phone turned off and when it again "started" it got stuck on the SAMSUNG logo, not the one with the yellow triangle but the glowing text "SAMSUNG".. Now I tried everything I could (I suppose, not sure as Im new to all of this) but to no avail.. The problem is, most of the troubleshooting articles suggest to reinstall/reflash or do whatever with Odin, but I cant use Odin because I cant access download mode because I have CMW and it automatically opens recovery mode.. I tried using like almost every option in the recovery mode, but nothing helped.. Also, my phone gets "detected" by PC after a while of having that glowing SAMSUNG text.. And I just dont know what to do now, its really frustrating that I cant access download mode because of that CWM recovery mode, is there any way to access it ? Or what am I supposed to do?
Please and thanks for your help .
Actually I just realized that going into download mode requires different command than going into recovery T.T I tried reflashing 2 roms but got stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S-II with yellow triangle now.. I think I formated /system and/or /boot folder thru CWM so.. Then I tried installing stock firmware but Odin said it FAILED right as it was doing Completed(write) command.. I just dont know what to do anymore, I am trying to download Kies now and going to try to recover firmware with it.. Isnt there just anyway to completely reset it to normal kernel/rom everything? I guess I fk*d up too much up until now so it might be too late :/

Seems like you're boot looping. To completely reset your phone, you must download a pit file for the s2 and select the partition file using odin. Tick repartition phone and start. Make sure that you also install the stock rom at the same time for safety purposes. Have a look at the xda forum, there is a thread where you can download the pit files.you should then do a factory reset and wipe the cache then if everything's working, then all good.
If you can't be bothered going through all these steps and don't mind using a modified stock rom (e.g neatrom), then you should try flashing that in cwm. And if this doesn't work, follow the first option.
