N9 Audio Feedback & Noise?? - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, some background first...
I'm having some audio problems with my N9.. It's a black, 32Gb, wifi only version, rooted and running pretty much a stock rom... 'Lollipopalooza', I believe.. (Nice by the way)
I bought it on Amazon about two or three weeks ago for $429, plus I received the $50 Google Play Store credit. Good deal, or so I thought.
Ok so... Like the title says, I'm getting audio feedback, noise, popping, and a sort of skipping effect, while streaming music and surfing the web, loading a webpage, or opening an app.
It sounds a lot like 28k modem from 1996... This happens no matter what app or web stream, and really ruins the multitasking/tablet experience. My N7's (2012 and 2013), never did this.
Has anyone had this happen, and is there a fix?? Or should I return it for another one and cross my fingers??
P.S. I also have the 'flat buttons' issue and screen bleed too.. Thoughts?
Thanks for any "Feedback"... Lol

Its not just you, I have the exact same issue. Its like speaker lag or some ****. Between that and screen flicker this thing is pissing me off. I only really use it for web browsing and youtube, so those 2 issues are quickly making this thing a brick to me.

[Q] Browser Freeze, lousy speaker sound

Has anyone had problems with their browser freezing when using the Nook's stock browser? I can barely surf five minutes without having to repeatedly close, stop, then reopen the stock browser, because it's frozen AGAIN. I'm willing to try any browsers that others can suggest if they're not having this problem with them. After all, being able to surf while hanging out in the living room is one of the main reasons I bought the Nook "Tablet".
I've seen discussions about browser freezing issues in the BN Nook forums, but no solutions, other than a claim that upgrading to 1.4.1 will solve the problem. That seems to be in dispute, however... and beyond that, I have no plans to update, since I'm rooted.
Also, what's up with the pitiful volume on the external speaker? I can barely hear the sound in movies and games, even with the volume turned up full. And Lord help me if there's any noise whatever in the room. Sure, I could get an external speaker or wear earbuds whenever I listen, but it's really annoying to know that my 4" Samsung Captivate, at full volume, is three times as loud as my Nook Tablet.
If anyone can suggest a software-oriented solution to this problem--or a way to increase the default volume levels without jumping through hoops, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for the suggestion re: Dolphin.
Apparently, this thing with the sound is not an isolated issue; more than one person on the BN Forums has mentioned it, and some have even gone ahead and gotten a refund.
Though I really like the Nook most ways, I admit, I'm thinking about getting a refund myself. The main stopper is not so much the cost of the other tabs, but the fact that many of them aren't as powerful as the Nook and aren't getting as much attention from the devs here at XDA.
It's just too bad the Nook has got these bugs and is attached to a company that, though it's own offerings are pitifully few, insists on forcing its customers into settling for what they want to offer, and nothing more. It could be such an awesome Tablet, if BN wasn't being so anal.
For the sound issue you can use a program called
Equalizer. Look for it in Android Maeketplace. Once installed
It will add a shortcut in your notifications bar
At the bottom. Use the power button on the right
to turn on features, but I would recommend only
Checking the equalizer. DO NOT check reverb
Because it causes stuttering. Lastly, click ok in dialogue box
and then select Equalizer at top. Adjust the middle and high range
Frequencies for a noticeable boost. TIP.. Make sure your
speaker is not obstructed by a protector or case. Good Luck!

[Q] Croaking / Chirping Transformer Prime

Hi
Recently my UK TF201 has begun making an intermittent croaking noise. It does this at totally irregular timings and often without any user activity occurring at the time.
My Prime is stock and not rooted. It is not associated with any particular program or app running in the background and is becoming very annoying. I'm writing this now after having been woken up by one of the croak sounding noises.
Look forward to your recommendations.

Please post a video
I'd love to be able to, as this would have saved me having to write the description as best I could. Unfortunately though, it makes the noise only a couple of times a day. Often just the one chirp/croak sound but occasionaly it will put out a couple within a second or two of the first. I don't have the time or a memory card large enough to sit with recording, waiting for it to croak before editting it down for a video I'm afraid.
It isn't exactly like a frogs "ribbit", its more or a deep "ugggh" but my children refer to it as croaking.
I've heard an identical sound before from a friends laptop, which he brought round to show me. It made these random noises a couple of times a day for about a fortnight, before it crashed and died. I hope these symptoms are not an indicator of a similar fate for my lovely Prime.

Yea I was thinking it was probably random, so it'd be hard to catch on film. That's so odd though. Doesn't look like anyone has any idea, since no one has posted. Does it come out of the speaker, or resonate out of the whole device? Does it do it if it's completely shut off?
Thanks for the reply Jay.
I'm darned if I can tell where the noise comes from. It's occurred a number of times whilst I've been using it but unfortunately with the speaker located on the back it is difficult to know whether it's from within the unit or speaker generated. Personally, I'm 99% confident it's from the speaker, it's just the 1% I can't fully confirm.
With regard to whether it happens with the unit shutdown, I rarely do a full shutdown other than once a week and then only for a full restart. It hasn't been left off for a long period to monitor. However it does this random chirping when in use and when in standby (screen switched ogg). Sorry can't be any more descriptive.
Mine does it some times. Nothing to be worried about tho...
That sound is typical from CPUs. Some laptops/desktops do that sound too.
There was a case from some Dell XPS that were doing that sound so loud that you could hear your CPU even with the internal fan at full speed.. they were offering a free CPU change for these users.
Sometimes my laptop does that sound too (AMD Phenom II X4) and my gfs laptops (Intel i5). I have yet to find what triggers it... but all my machines have done it.
Thanks Zephyrot
Yes that's exactly the noise. The laptop that my friend had was a Dell XPS 1210. Perhaps it was just a coincidence then that the laptop died a couple of weeks after it starting making this noise.
The noise that occurs usually at least once an hour has not occurred in the 2 hours that I have had it totally down powered for investigation. This therefore also lends itself to your theory that it could be CPU based.
The problem I'm having though is that it is loud enough to wake me up when it erupts with one of these chirp/croaks. If someone actually knows why the internals make this noise and more importantly what can be done to stop it from occurring, I would be grateful.
I appreciate that down powering is an option but this is not something that I had intended to do with a tablet. I use my table at work and need to get access to it within 15 seconds of picking it up. Turning the screen off and with such a good battery life, I can readily access information on the fly, whereas having to turn it on would mean waiting up to 2 minutes which is just too long I'm afraid.
Is there anything else you can add Zephyrot with regard to describing the noise, or diagnosing that you have done for the rest of the community to be able to comment on?

There is obviously an animal stuck in your tablet, probably small frog or bird. I would RMA immediately before the animal dies.

Sound pop fixable in software?

I noticed last night while using my phone in my quiet room that I too have the faint pop 3 seconds after a sound plays. I've found several threads on here and elsewhere relating to the HTC One and other phones having the same issue. It appears to be an OS issue rather than a specific phone or hardware issue. Some have explained that it's the amplifier shutting off after the sound has played. It's not a dealbreaker and definitely a first world problem, but this is my first Android phone after using only iPhones for the last 5 years and it is very annoying when you hear it and cant get rid of it. I also noticed this happens even if I have the sound completely off! Is this a fixable thing by google or a clever patcher?
Wow... I had never noticed this and if it weren't for this thread I probably wouldn't have. After a sound plays, it sounds like there is a sort of "static" (for lack of a better term) that plays until something shuts off. It's like on the old cassette players - the difference between the end of a tape that's playing versus having the player turned off. Weird. I really don't know what to make of it.

It's called beats audio...
It happens without beats and HTC are aware of it.
Mine does it as well, noticed it the first day I had it.

Random Speaker Crackle

Is anyone else getting a slight "crackle" when doing things with the device?
While my device isn't doing it all of the time, the speaker will occasionally randomly crackle/pop when playing a brief sound (such as the sound made while tapping app icons or adjusting the volume).
Doesn't seem to do it when there's an actual constant sound playing though, which is pretty odd =/
I heard a crackle/pop on a display model at bestbuy. I hope its not a problem on all of them.

I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one haha.
This sort of problem seems more indicative of a voltage issue than an actual speaker issue though at least, which means it could be fixed in an update if it is a widespread problem.
It reminds me of a problem I had with another device that was more or less fixed by either changing the governor or increasing minimum voltage.
Welp, my thread got moved here and this forum is pretty much a graveyard. If anybody else has this issue and happens to figure out how to fix it, please PM me, as I won't be bothering to check this thread.
As near as I can tell, it only ever happens while it's USB-attached to a PC (in my case, a Mac laptop).
Mine crackles for a few seconds every time I open the camera app. Didn't start out that way. Want to say it started about a couple weeks after I got the phone. Maybe after an update but not sure. Everything works so I've just ignored it.
Hi NeoRage. Am getting the same problem (crackling when opening the camera) - did the problem go away?
I have the issue too. S6 Edge I noticed it when editing my contacts, it cant be good that electricity is arcing someplace! but like someone else said, it keeps working so... I don't know if it coincided with Marshmallow but it was right in that same timeframe.

Z5 Compact with SBH-80 range is pathetic.

Hey guys,
I basically bought the SBH-80 for about £40 and I'm experiencing some erratic behavior.
Sometimes if I leave the phone on my desk I can walk to the other side of the house before audio starts distorting i.e. the range is good. But sometimes the range is like 20cm. I kind find any pattern which would explain this discrepancy. The range is awful about 95% of the time.
The problem is I cycle to work, the phone works fine when I'm setting it up. It connects quickly and music starts playing. As soon as I put it into my pockets the music distorts, snap, crackle, pops and is basically unusable.
I've probably missed out lots of vital information but this is the jist of the issue. Can anyone recommend me trying anything?
note: It's not the headunit, I've tested it with an iPhone 5S and an iPhone 5 and it functions perfectly.

bad news bro. that happened to my sbh80 too. bought it for $100 last year. either your bluetooth antenna(left earpiece cable) snapped or you have damaged bluetooth module. mine had that problem 3 months after buying it. kept it in storage for months i forgot i ever bought it. then i saw it again while i was cleaning up with 90% battery. tried it and now it works well. i don't know what happened as i sold it the next day for $65.

Brilliant lol It lasted ONE cycle trip, before it started distorting. Thankfully the eBay seller said I can return it. It's such a shame... I really like the design. Can you recommend any other bluetooth headsets?

I'd say jaybird bluebuds since you cycle to work. They sound really good too.
I've got a Plantronics Voyager Legend. Within the same room (~20ft) it seems ok, but if it has to go through a wall (~30ft), it starts to break up. I once tried going up one floor and on the opposite side of the house (maybe 50ft at most) and it was really bad.
I figured that bluetooth in general wasn't that great.
I've never had an issue with the phone on me though.
I have more issues with my bluetooth mouse connected to my laptop

Ooft they are very expensive, not sure if I can endure such a hit on my bank account . I appreciate good audio quality. At home I use Grado SR225i's with Little Dot 1+ amp and I love it... Not tried a headphone more than I like that combination. But when it comes to earphones I don't really care about quality because I know I won't get anything close to the grado, the Sony earphones that came with my Z1 Compact are more than good enough but, of course, it's not wireless.

I've read a few threads were the Z5 was having trouble connecting to bluetooth in people's cars etc but I think my issue is with the headset because it doesn't actually work with any other phone either
I have a z1 compact, and I've always had bt issues with it across devices. I have a z5 compact arriving tomorrow, reading this isn't inspiring.
I use a sbh52, and it never quite worked right with sony, but I think that was mostly due to the data channel stuff and how it interacted with the app for email alerts and other socket stuff that uses raw serial protocols to communicate. I've at times had 4-5 different serial devices attached to the phone, and none of them are happy when doing so. The radio seems to become selective about who is actually working at a time, but the upstream consumers at the bluez socket layer seem unaware stuff isn't working.
I got a non-sony phone, a sharp aquos, and using it with my sbh52 without any sony software, and only that - it rocks actually, range and all. I felt a little bit bad I used to talk so much crap about it.
My biggest telltale of bluetooth serial dysfunction with my z1c was my google glass, which works entirely as both a persistent tethered device via bt, and a headset device. Data for glass via bt also refused to work if I disabled the headset kindly, so in other words bluetooth dysfunction ruined usability when mobile. Now I tether my glass to my tablet data that does no other bt, and seems to work pretty dandy.
It seems more of a bluetooth stack issue as a whole, either between google and/or firmware vendors, and if my z5 gives me issues too, I'll just need to find a more "dumb" headset.
---------- Post added at 10:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:26 AM ----------
I started watching catlog (log reader) when using my glass and headset troubleshooting, and would suggest doing so too.
I would always see "innocuous" looking messages about the bt, but nothing seemed to ever really "break". I'd see disconnects and reconnects, when one device or the other wouldn't/couldn't connect, seemed at the radio level though as the headset would just give up trying to connect.
Happened the same to me too. Xperia z5c+sbh80. The audio is kinda lagging whenever I put in my pocket. But, I have read somewhere in xda post that somebody claimed it might related with stamina mode configuration (solution given: put audio setting into exception list) and it might related to activity on the fingerprint scanner as well (really? solution given: try to avoid any contact on the fingerprint scanner because z5c try to initiate vibration mode while the audio is still playing). I have try both solutions, and yeah, there are little bit less lagging activity.
I'm using Sony SBH-80 as well, and it works perfect. I'm listening about 2-3h music/day, loads of calls through SBH80, and it works fine. Indeed, sometimes it disconnects automatically (usually when I'm using facebook call and I receive an email or something like that). On my S6 dual sim didn't happened that, but I can live with that. Sorry guys to hear that you have issues with that, on my side it's fine.
Late reply guys sorry.

So does the Z5 compact work with your headset then? They seem to release cool devices, update to a later version of android, it ends up not working properly and they pretty much just forget about it.

Yes! My SBH52 was absolute crap with my z1c (random disconnects, sound levels, just never connecting), with a Sony original rom, Cyanogen10-11, any kernel/rom I tried. With my z5c, my SBH52 works dandy, even with the sony app installed for the data link, as well as my SBH60's that came with the z5c as a Clove special. Need to resurrect my jawbone, everyone hated it I spoke to prior, now I'm curious about it too.
Oddly, my friend just upgraded too, didn't want to spend the extra for a z5c, so got a used z3c instead, and has a lot of issues with his bluetooth as well. Mine was more disconnections, devices fighting over connections, but his seems to be just simple horrible quality, like noise entering in when used, so not sure if it's bad software or bad phy bt chip or a bunk build.prop on it. Sound always required a lot of tweaking on my z1c, it was useless without root and hacking to fix the crap sony rom build or a *good* 3rd party rom, so maybe it as well.
Range-wise, I've used the SBH52's with my phone upstairs on my desk, and walking downstairs about 30 feet away and through a hall/wall. The SBH60 has much less range I've found, 20 feet away and down the hall same level codec sound comes unglued.

I don't ever use stamina modes... My battery life is/was always crap on my z1c (~6-8hr), as I collect a bunch of push imap accounts with aquamail, multiple gmail accounts, lots of system level apps, so it's almost expected my battery life to be nil. I've been a bit more pleasantly surprised with the z5c with most everything from my z1c loaded (~10-15hr), the battery life is still better, but the z1c was also ~3yr old with original battery.

They *did* have the whole headphone connection issue on the z3c, really don't know how much of those sorts of things come down to maybe bad connectors internally. Doesn't seem to matter if you're apple or sony, us or china, sh*t happens.
My only impetus for upgrade was I noticed I had some discoloration on my z1c lcd, and my phone now had a noticeable curve in the middle (think lg flex) after apparently sitting on it the wrong way, so replacing it before it just died was key. So far I'm happier with the z5c. as thus far "everything works", including sound levels that were always an issue with the z1c too (bad Sony), and especially bluetooth function. The fingerprint reader unlock convenience is awesome, and I'm looking forward to trying payments with it. I came across the z5 drm restore now, so it's rooting time, and it's going to get even better once I can remove nauseating ads with an adblock means, and using xprivacy again since since disables app privacy (gee, thanks big brother).
