Rooting the Sprint Edge while keeping SHealth/Xposed/Private Mode - Sprint Note Edge Android Development

UPDATE 05/28/15 This works fine without doing the xposed part on Lollipop. No speed issues. It may be totally unnecessary now but I am not going to retry it to see. It may once again become necessary to follow these instructions when we get xposed for lollipop.
There are a number of threads about these two topics, I am going to consolidate my findings here.
First off root works great on the Sprint variant, secondly so does Xposed with S-Health and private mode. You just have to be careful how you set them up. There have been a lot of posts about freezing S-health and Private mode then clearing data but from my experience that is hit or miss. There are four basic steps to getting everything working and it should be done from a factory reinstall of software. The files you will need are in the following threads/links
Chainfire Autoroot - http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/
Chainfire File Link - http://download.chainfire.eu/617/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-tbltespr-tbltespr-smn915p.zip
Xposed - http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/xposed-installer-versions-changelog-t2714053
Xsecure - http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/app-xshealth-bypass-secure-storage-t2878708
Teamwin Recovery - http://www.techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/trltespr
Root using Chainfire autoroot for Sprint it will fail just pull the battery and boot to download to install the teamwin recovery (buttons HOME, VOLUME DOWN, AND POWER) boot to recovery then install supersu. Before leaving recovery set the screen timeout off and lower the brightness to 10.
Skip past Google and Samsung setup. You can fill out the first and last name screen (only opportunity to name phone, first boot).
Download and install Xposed (not Wanam) download and install XSecure Health module install Xposed framework reboot
Activate Xsecure Health module reboot
Clear Data for Health Service and S-Health reboot
Run Private mode and set up, run S-Health and setup.
Setup your Google and Samsung accounts
If you do these steps exactly without doing anything else I can promise you will have a rooted Sprint version with Xposed, Shealth, and private mode working. When I say exactly I am serious there are a lot of things that can/will mess you up like
Signing into google or samsung on reboot after installing factory software
Starting private mode before setting up xposed
Shortcutting by doing a factory reset instead of a factory software reinstall
Restoring your data Nandroid backup (Use Titanium etc for a program by program reinstall of apps)
BTW the problem here is a little bit deeper than uninstall xposed everything works. There is a something that is changed in the software with either xposed or wanam that can permanently kill private mode until you do a factory install. At the moment I am doing Nandroids before any change I make in Xposed.

worked like a charm. Thank you very much.

Sorry it is because the SU has to be installed outside of the system. There may be a way to then use TWRP or CWM to reinstall the stock recovery but I have not researched that.

Thanks blackinjun for this, I just got a Sprint variant of the Note Edge. I believe that I'm on NK1, it's been a while since I rooted a device, last one was about 2 years ago on my Galaxy S4. Will try it this weekend.

@metal i now think it may be better to keep the custom recovery. Ive found that when su says it needs an update it asks to reboot ro twrp or cwm to update. I have twrm and it worked flawlessly.

worked for me as well just like you said..one problem im seeing though..well not sure if it matters..but while makeing my back of stock system,i see in red letters cant mount cace several times, but it completes the back up,and says sussefull..im backing up to my external sd card..i flashed the super user zip first before back up,flashed latest zip, hope this diddnt matter, did you mean to let twrp install it?..or ok to flash the zip?..anyhow,should i worry about the red letters 'cant mount cacge'??...i dont like it when i see any red letters while in recovery, just looks bad to me,like something is wroung...

I have a client that I rooted their Note Edge but they really want Stock Recovery. Do you know how to put stock recovery back on there?

what am i doing wrong. i download the tar file for twrp but it won't show up when i open the odin because it is showing up as a .img file. if i just change it to .tar it fails

Download the zip file not the IMG.tar

Is it possible to do this. If my phone is already rooted?
I randomly found a YouTube video they walked me through rooting my phone before I knew shealth would have not work. This was a couple months ago I guess. So I'd like to get it back. Though doing factory reset isn't something that I'd prefer to do. But if it comes to it.
I'd assume just follow the rest of the steps in your tutorial?

this trick will work if your already rooted. Clear your D. Cache and cache and start from the download/install xposed portion of the instructions. This is what I ended up doing and haven't had any issues at all.

For those who have moved to lollipop has anyone tried this method

Same process as rooting kk i had no probl3ms with s health or private mode

Root using chainfire odin twrp ,xposed does not work on lolipop,so no other steps.

It says mobile signal or something like that. Did I do something wrong can any one assist me on this matter? I followed the steps on the form as well as several videos showing me how to do this. another question do i need to root first or unlock first? I've done this process over and over again but cannot get my cell phone to make calls or get data, There is like a hazard sign where the data shows.. please help me!

You should ask in the ROMs thread.
When you unlock, you also gain root.

So if I follow the unlock guide. via ODIN and casual I gain root? I'm a newbie to this lol former Iphone user all of this is new to me. I've tried several roms and still have the same issue. Also followed the guides as well. It's very fustrating because I get no where regarding this matter. Even watching the video's and following the steps have led me to be unsucessful..

1. Flash revision3 via odin following the guide in its thread. (This will give you root)
2.Follow the bootloader unlock process in adam's guide from its thread (this will unlock your bootloader and unless hes changed it flash twrp a custom rocovery.)
Now you need to reboot into recovery and make a back up. To do this you need to go into recovery (twrp or clockwork mod). You can get to recovery by powering off the phone and holding volume-up+home+power. Now go to backup and restore back up. If you have an external sd I would recommend selecting the option to backup to it.
After that select a rom you want. If you want stock rooted you dont have to flash anything. Look in your app drawer if you see an app called supersu or super user you're rooted. If you want another rom follow these steps to flash it.
1. Read rom thread for known bugs so you know what youre getting into.
2. Download rom. DO NOT UNZIP.
3. Check md5 sum.
4. Move to external or internal sd where you can find it.
5. Boot into recovery.
6. Select install.
7 navigate to rom file.
8. Swipe to install. If it has aroma follow instructions if not wait for it to do its thing

doesnt remove just puts it to the "uninstalled state". so u can choose to install it, from APP menu. KNOX.. then click install.
Don't seem worthwhile to flash. It doesn't have most of the note3/s4 functions

if your refering to "air command / snote3 etc" . those are n3 exclusive features. the skynote rom has them ported as addons but its touch and go atm some succeeded ( i myself got everything working, except a few syncing issues)
there will be ports though. no doubt
this wont work because of KNOX anyway. stupid feature.
I think knox can be gotten rid of using titanium backup

UPDATE.
it does work. i just had to update SuperSU i got a few knox errors but it seems to be rooted. now some apps like readers hub etc. wont load (rooting detected)
addition to the tutorial above:
after you started your device again do the following:
1) update supersu through playstore
2) open supersu and update binary > reboot
and if you don't get popups to ask you for permission as soon as you use an app that needs root, open supersu and in settings set the default behavior from "ask" to "always allow".
this gets rid of the fc's and you can enjoy apps with root permission.
All i did was update SuperSU. it said binaries needed updating. i dont have twrp on this so i just selected normal. it rebooted to stock recovery , did nothing i could see. rebooted. updated gplay again. opened superSU didnt give FC. loaded greenify. WIN
all my apps ask "GRANT" permission.
wanam exposed works. got popup for KNOX again. just used it to bypass popup. still have root

also used normal on my device, but it didn't reboot to recovery for me, it simply installed and told me that i needed to reboot.
i do however fail to get popup's asking me for permission.
yeah. i think everytime a new app asks it might trigger. but i have wanam exposed removing them. so all looks great. can customize away now. thats all i wanted. THANKS!
There is a nice rom for the 7100 ditto that could be updated for the 7105. It can be found in the 7100 development section. I think with some encouragement the development team would bring it to the 7105
Sent from my GT-N7105 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, 7105 isn't officially supported in neither Skynote nor Ditto. So i can't really get the N3 features on my phone without risking problems anyway. Thus going with the official 4.3 may be the best thing for the LTE people to do, which is why i'm now waiting for someone to release a stock rom modded to take away the knox bootloader. I still haven't decided what to do. There are some really good roms for 7105 in terms of performance and battery life, but those aren't the reasons for why i bought this phone. It feels like there are no good roms for the 7105 that don't also break the many unique features, like the advanced pen functions and the excellent stock camera app's steady-shot and slow-motion functionality. Those are more important to me than performance and battery life.

i only have stock installed. sorry for delay. sleeping.
but when i updated superSU. i selected NORMAL recovery. then it said it would reboot. took about 10 seconds or more then rebooted into normal recovery. I didnt see it update or install anything automated so was like ?????? rebooted. then got messages from KNOX. then after updating my gapps APPS like. "google services" or the one that updates the gplay app. anyway. then it all seemed to work. noticed greenify asked for permission for root. i granted and it didnt get denied by knox. got a warning when trying to load "wanam exposed". then used wanam to get rid of warnings and stuff. even though i still have root.
after wipe/factory settings when I try to open SuperSU for update its blocked straight away with KNOX, any idea?

[Q] Can't Load CWM/TWRP on MDK

[SOLVED]
Turns out CMW 6.0.4.7 will not flash to this device - solution was to use the app "Flashify" from the play store which simply and easily installed TWRP
Thanks joshm.1219!
[SOLVED]
I am at a complete loss for a fix. Short story is: I wasn't receiving any MMS, so I finally decided to ODIN back to stock and used this method so I could keep my data. Here's what happened next:
- ODIN passed but I couldn't get past the Verizon logo
- Tried several suggested fixes but the last resort one worked; I wiped data & factory reset (thus defeating the purpose of the no-wipe ODIN... w/e)
- Everything loads fine, TouchWiz works but I get a Factory Mode popup and can't lock my screen. (still can't lock my phone even now but will use this method if I think I'm stuck with TouchWiz)
- I use this method to unlock bootloader and root - root confirmed.
- Try to install CWM recovery or TWRP (btw, where the hell did GooManager go and why is it so hard to find now) and they say successful but I simply can't boot into them, just keep getting the factory recovery screen which won't let me flash any roms or any non-signed .zips
- MMS Still doesn't work!
- I call VZW in desperation and somehow they magically reset my account services and MMS works again! (I probably could have done this in the first place and not lost my ROM/Data and sanity if I'd known)
I have looked high and low for a solution but have found none. I also have been unable to find a REGULAR stock MDK file to flash on this phone - I can only find the NO-WIPE version which doesn't even allow you to keep your data. I'm confused and frustrated and would love some active help, I just can't find the right threads/posts/ect.
Thank you kindly for any advice.. I love my S4 and have been using PA, PAC, CM and other ROMS since the day I got it - I need that back! TouchWiz is just... I just don't like it.
Try this one.

Thanks for the original stock.. sadly I am still ending up with the Android System Recovery and despite installing CWM Recovery, I just can't get to it. I also still get the ridiculous Factory Mode popup.
Any ideas? I'm so sad :'(
From off it's either home+volume down+power or home+volume up+power. One boots into stock recovery the other will boot into CWM.
Hold all three until you see some small blue text in the upper left of the screen.

Thanks for the effort but I'm well aware of that. As I said in the OP, I've been using custom ROMs on this since day one - the issue is that I cannot boot into CMW Recover, despite having a successful install via the app.
Dumb question, which app are you using? I use RomManager to install CWM (up to 6.0.4.7) and I have a flashable zip of 6.0.5.0.

I'm using ROM Manager but it won't work. I'd love to try ODIN flashing the CWM Recovery if you have the file for my MDK build.
I may have it on my PC at home. When I get there (60-90 min) I'll look. If I do I'll post up to Dropbox and give you a link.
Ok, I've searched my HDD and I don't have the CWM file. What I do have is the MDK all-in-one root+recovery tool for the I545. I can put it up and upload it if the file isn't too large but I don't know if that'll help you.
CWM 6.0.5.0 flashable zip is in the CM11 thread but I don't know if the recovery image in the file is good for you, either

This thread might be dead, but rather than starting a new one for what is probably a stupid question, I'll ask it here and see what happens. I've been having major trouble flashing any 5.0 rom on my MDK VZW S4....Seems like every ROM fails when flashing. I have a feeling my issue is an outdated version of TWRP (2.5.0.2), but I am very hesitant to update because it seems like everyone has been having issues with 2.8.1.0. With this being said, are you guys currently running the most current version of TWRP and would you mind advising which .img file worked via Flashify? Not sure whether to use the jfltexxx or jfltevzw...or if it even matters.
I'm sure I've left out pertinent information, but let me know what I'm missing and I'll update accordingly.
I've been using the latest version of TWRP 2.8.1.0 and running Euroskank Lollerpop with zero issues. Coincidentally, TWRP just got updated today to 2.8.3.0 which i have yet to flash but will do so shortly. I would recommend JFLTEVZW based on my usage. Not sure if the other variant works or not but it appears you have a verizon device so stick with JFLTEVZW.

THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN @ShinySide!!! Not only for root, but now for a working custom recovery. Truly the 2 most important tools we could have for our phone.
FOR EVERYONE ELSE:
As usual, be sure to give @ShinySide your Thanks/Donations/etc.!!! He deserves it! Also, now that you have TWRP you might be wondering what to do next. Here are a couple of suggestions of things that I've already done and that I am quite happy with.
1) Theme it! - Here are some themes you can try out that will not only make TWRP more beautiful, but also provide a layout that is more intuitive and user friendly. These are listed in a Galaxy S2 thread yes, but I've attached a picture of the one that I'm currently running and I'm happy to say that it works on our phone like a charm. I've also used these themes on other phones in the past. Just follow the instructions in the OP of that thread and give the guy some thanks on that thread if you like them. There is no risk in this btw. Either it works or it doesn't and to get rid of it if you don't like it you just have to delete the theme folder that you placed in TWRP. (Try to use the files that say "480x800" as that's the resolution of our screen.) Here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2-plus/themes-apps/theme-materialised-t2933979
2) Add the Xposed Framework - Go to this link here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62377731
Then, install the Xposed app from the link on that thread. After that, you're going to want to pick the file attached to the OP of that thread that is called "xposed-v80.0-sdk22-arm-custom-build-by-wanam-20160211.zip" and save it to the root of your external SD card. (Do not download the one that says "ARM64" in it. Just the one I mentioned.) Then, just flash it via TWRP and reboot. You should now have the Xposed Framework installed. Once, again be sure to give the OP thanks on that thread too!
NOTE: After flashing Xposed it may hang on the MetroPCS screen on the next reboot for up to 15-20 mins or so while it's doing stuff. If it's any longer than that, then just pop the battery out and reboot. It will boot properly after that while it reoptimizes some apps.
OK something not right everytime I flash the twrp I keep getting the 2.8.70 instead of the version of This 2.8.1.0 one I need help cause everything is correct I keep getting that old version instead of this new version but twrp 2.8.7.0 still works good but I want the version right here

2.8.7.0 is right. The picture I attached of my themed one I just downloaded from the theme thread because I couldn't take a screenshot from TWRP. Everything is good. No need to worry.
Thanks....glad to know that but everytime I reboot to system from twrp it keep going right back to the twrp instead of system that's what I worry about I have to keep flashing the kernel root cause the twrp not working right but ima get the theme to see what happens next

It shouldn't be doing that. Also, you should just make sure your TWRP is properly installed first before you do anything else to it. Maybe try rebooting your phone just by holding the power button once instead of selecting reboot system and see if it boots correctly then.

I don't think it's right now I have the same picture frame u have in the picture but still not 2.8.1.0 at the top it have the 2.8.7.0 up there at the top of it and another thing is I can't flash anything everything else good but can't swipe to install so I need to get this right cause I don't be having problems with nothing else when I do stuff for my device

Again, it is supposed to be 2.8.7.0 . Don't go by the picture I posted it was just a sample of what I had. Not a screenshot. Also, it doesn't need to look like mine to work. Theming it was just for fun and should only be done after you've successfully installed TWRP. Anyhow, try flashing this stock recovery file here. Then, boot into stock recovery and make sure you can still reboot to Android from there. If so, then go back and try flashing the TWRP recovery file again instead and see if that fixes the problem. No one else should flash this file by the way unless they are trying to go back to stock recovery for whatever reason. Thanks!

Good job
Awesome! Goood job dude, can't wait till you write up the proper instructions. I'm a noob so don't want to do something wrong.
Another masterpiece By @shineside....
A great BIG Thank you @Bogarty For helping to bring this all together.
We have root, we have TWRP, and that's all thanks to @ShinySide! Great work!

So, should this NOT work and it continues to reboot to TWRP what comes next? ? Ok, you got me. It continues to reboot into TWRP. I've never encountered this scenario before (granted I've never flashed a custom recovery via ODIN before either, but it went as expected up until I did a backup and tried to reboot into the system) and no, I didn't bother with trying to fancy up TWRP. I don't want TWRP looking unfamiliar. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try flashing through ODIN again. Make sure you are in actual download mode (meaning don't use the option in TWRP, use the key combo), and flash it again.
Maybe we could get another youtube video? What do you say, "TheDerek"?

Ok, that's next on the agenda. Gonna take a walk and get myself calmed down before I resume troubleshooting. Thanks for the helpful and speedy response. And the bit about booting into Download Mode using the button combo over the TWRP option - I actually had no idea there was a difference there. I've gathered several boot/recovery zips and tars just in case and am tracking down the T-Mobile version of the g360t1 firmware as well (to cover all my bases, because when it rains it pours ?). Anyhow, I'll report back once I have something to report and thanks again guys ?

It has to be something you guys are doing during the flashing process that is causing it to boot into TWRP instead of Android. I would try flashing the Trapkernel again from download mode to see if that gives you boot, then if so, try flashing TWRP again. Both should be flashed in AP slot of ODIN. Make sure OEM Unlocking is checked in developer options, etc.
If that doesn't work and it still boots to TWRP, then you may have messed something up in there somehow. Try flashing back stock boot and stock recovery and make sure boot and stock recovery were restored. Once that's working, then you can try reflashing Trapkernel and TWRP. Use this link for more info on restoring your phone and for links to the stock files if you need them.

Try reinjecting TWRP using the option in settings.

[GUIDE] Root Samsung Galaxy J1 Verizon SM-J100VPP

I got this device used and it had been updated to the newest firmware. It would not work with Kingroot, Framaroot, SRS, or Kingo. The only option was to attempt to downgrade to an older firmware with unpatched exploits. The Verizon J1 has a locked bootloader so it cannot flash full firmware packages with older bootloaders. Luckily it can be downgraded to older firmware of the same android version with older kernel. I just had to unpack the firmware and remove the bootloader and repack. I tried to make a rooted stock firmware but can't seem to repack the system.img.ext4 properly after mounting it.
Now let's get down to business
1. Download Odin 3.09
2. Download modified (by me) rootable firmware. Do not rename file it might mess up md5sum.
3. Boot phone to download mode. Hold power+vol down+ home.
4. Start Odin and connect phone with original factory sync cable.
5. Click on the AP button and select the firmware downloaded above. It will check the md5sum automatically when it finishes and passes then press the start button. Once the flash finishes it will reboot.
6. Enable usb debugging.
7. Download Kingoroot for PC (google) and let it run. The apk will not work to root. It should install drivers automatically.
8. Profit!!
I'm testing a method to reliably switch to Supersu but having trouble updating binary 100% of the time. I've tried to flash exposed but Flashfire doesn't seem to work properly with this device. If anyone can suggest a workaround please share.
OP, is it okay if I don't have original factory sync cable in hands?

Yeah its ok you just run into less issues with original cable.
**Working on updating links I have a slow upload speed though.

If u want to switch to SuperSu from KingoROOT, the best and easiest method would be backing up ur phone and performing a soft reset. Afterwards simply install SuperSu, the superuser binary is already installed from kingroot - no worries, just update it normally via SuperSU and disable KNOX after the update is complete.
That switch idea of yours might get you bricked
Confirmed it works now we need a recovery so we can just flash su
SuperSUme works really really well lol, this phone is 32bit only any1 wanna try 4 a recovery?
Thxx bro
I've tried porting a few times from the j100h twrp and keep getting a return to Verizon dealer screen. So I'd assume the bootloader is still locked. Im going to try the old safestrap and see if i can't get that working. But im kinda a noob so I'll do my best.
p.s. Don't try flashing any recovery until you backup your current one with rashr or flashify.BE SAFE.btw I've yet to see supersume actually work but hey it could happen. I'd much rather just flash the su from a recovery.

Agreed about flashing the recovery, but you need to be rooted with KingOroot to get SuperSUme to work, & it helps to just keep the screen timeout turned off thru this process , after it says "complete" I downloaded SuperSU & installed, updated, "disabled" knox, & I can also use flashfire although its pretty worthless for anything other than backups, as the little AROMA shell emulator thingy does run after the verizon logo is showing, which indicates to me yea its locked down pretty solid lol.
I tried Safestrap & it gave me a /SS folder in my /etc so I looked into that but I can't manage to figure out how I should go placing the files to make it work lol. But i do know this thing is 32bit ONLY, so compiling the j100H twrp for instance will NOT flash no matter what we do to the bootloader, it will bootloop since the architecture is for a 64bit SoC, we need someone to compile the j100H twrp in a 32bit only compatible architecture, & then you can easily flash it like cake, & TWRP should do the rest like all other Samsung phones O.O
its gotten to the point these are all the apps I have when i restore haha, if you wanna PM me about working together to get this thing a little more flexible I'm always open to ideas . I only use this thing as a hotspot but would totally like to see a recovery at least make it over & from there I could definitely start the ROM bringup
Will I get bricked by doing this with Verizon
