Looking for assistance rooting a Sonim XP6 (on AT&T) running 4.4.2 with a MSM8926 chipset. It's a cool rugged little candybar phone with an actual numeric keypad! Don't see many of these around...
Have tried all the typical rooting avenues around no such luck. I'm able to get into recovery and fastboot mode and that's about it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...the phone has only been out for a few weeks so if there is any information I can provide to help breaking this device i'm all for it.

I just rooted mine with towelroot. Worked great! After running towelroot, I then installed supersu, rebooted, and then installed the binaries in supersu, installed xposed framework and gravity box and now I like this phone lol
Keeps saying device is not supported. This is hard coming from a nexus 6 to this. Lol

I know this is an old thread but it seems to be the only thread so I'm going to update it. Kingo was able to root my XP6700 that has a kernal date of 28OCT14. YMMV.

No. I seriously doubt any developer would spend any time on this phone at all. It is nice being rooted cause it has allowed me to freeze or delete a bunch of stuff using TiB.
Kingroot is work, i did it.
Wifi Tethering working
For the 2 or 3 people using this phone I did figure out how to make the hotspot work. Once rooted download root explorer. Go to /system and enable read/write - should get a superuser request. Long press on build.prop and then open with the text editor. Scroll down to #system prop for Service Entitlement. Change att.service.entitlement=true to false. At the very end add net.tethering.noprovisioning=true. Save, verify the changes took effect, then reboot and enjoy. This worked for me, I don't know if it will work for you but give it a try.
It makes the perfect portable wifi hotspot that can be used almost anywhere in any kind of weather. The 4 Ah battery is nice too.
Wifi tethering enabled
Just wanted to say thanks.
I used your tip to get my hotspot working on XP5700 with kingroot and a Bluetooth mouse.
By the way if anyone needs it, to enable adb on XP5 :
*#*#2387#*#*
That will open developer menu. Check USB debugging enabled
You can install apks over adb just fine. This is how I got kingroot.
Thanks again for the build.prop edits.

The XP5 - you mean the neutered androidish brick of a phone from Sonim? I have one of those too and as soon as I find it I'm going to give this a try. This along with the build.prop hack takes something that is useless and makes it into something very useful. I know the XP6 will run the hotspot for several hours on a charge, I'm sure the XP5 would even be better - coupled with the $60 Cricket unlimited plan would be amazing.
That it is... I like it though

Apt description of the phone.
Kinda limited on apps due to the lack of touchscreen.
What editor did you use to edit the build.prop?
nevermind, i was able to sideload rootexplorer and edited the build.prop without issue. I appreciate your discovery of how to get into developer options.

that being said, i'd appreciate one myself.
I am also dying for root on this phone. It has been 2 weeks for me and nothing. The phone is slowing down a bi due to all the metro crapware installed that I cant get rid off without root.
Programmerrrrrsssssssss, we neeeeeedddd ROOT on the Admire please!!!
I have to admit that i'm looking forward to one too. I'm sick of all the bloatware they load that turns itself on when you have no need of it.
Right now, after using Advanced Task Killer and then checking 1 hour later with no actual use on the phone, there is "voice search", "Visual Voice Mail" and "myMetro" that are all running and unkillable.

Hey Everyone,
I live in Sacramento CA and was told we have 3G here, but I've had my Admire since since Friday and still haven't seen a 3G on my phone.. Not even once! Is there something I need to do or download to make this happen? I tried taking out the battery and then calling *228 option 5 to update the prl, but still my phone is at 3019. My friend has had her Admire since Oct and today had our phones right next to eachother. She had 3G and I still have my 1X! The city we were in isn't even suppose to have 3G yet, and yet she had it! What is wrong with my phone??
Also I'm trying to root my phone, but I have no idea which site I should use to download the root.. I already have titanium backup (free version) and as soon as I'm rooted I will download the PRO.
Any help would be very very appreciated!!
Thank you!

Hello.
I am cancelling my personal contract as I have a company supplied win 7 phone but would like to continue to use the apps on my android at home using the WiFi.
I have tried it without the sim but I cannot get past the 'no sim detected' screen after turning it on. The only options are shut down or restart.
Is there any modification, setting or app I can use to bypass the requirement for an active sim card?
A google search didn't give any answers, I'm hoping someone here could help?
Thank you.

Anyone have any ideas?

Is the phone rooted? Is USB debugging enabled? One option is to install third-party firmware / ROMs which would help you use the phone the way you like.
No I've never felt the need to root it, my tinkering days left me with my win mo 6.5 phone!
Is it still the case that certain apps won't run on a phone that has been rooted? Banking apps are ones that spring to mind.

There is no reason any app won't work after rooting, like coolprateek.kumar said, there are only apps which won't work without root. Also, if any app (like banking app) is designed to not run on phones without root, you can reject the root request from that app - which would make it believe that the phone is not rooted and run fine. Rooting gives you lot of additional benefits including for example delete the app that blocks with "no sim detected" when you boot without sim.

USB debugging lets you login to your phone from a PC through a USB connection and do many things like execute commands, install / uninstall apps, copy files from and to the phone. The previous poster has given how to enable USB debugging - once enabled, connect your phone to a PC, install something called 'adb drivers' for your PC and you would have access to your phone from PC. If you have this setup, you can boot without SIM and see which app is running in the foreground (no sim detected) and try to kill the app process and see if it works. You can do such experiments and make your phone work without SIM.
I would also highly recommend you install Cyanogenmod or AOKP which would by default work without a SIM, and much better than the stock OS.

The answer is the super user icon. I can't post an image because this forum has crap restrictions on new users but its there.
Google Experience Launcher:
I found a way to get most of the S5 fingerprints off of the phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/themes-apps/apps-google-experience-launcher-gel-app-t2529594
Easiest way to install is to download the launcher (file size 11.82 MB). No need for the "google search app" since it is already installed.
No root required - APKs are signed by Google, are safe to install and were not tampered with in any way.
Now you have a "nexus" like phone complete with wallpaper. Camera (and other apps) as well as the system tray are still Touchwiz.
Samsung's magazine app (left of the home screen) is also replaced by "Google Now".
Best of both worlds.
In addition you can look at the thread in my sig for the ported apps directory. You can install nearly all the stock Nexus apps. Then just disable all the built in S5 ones or uninstall if rooted. Also if your rooted, im sure by using Xposed mods you can change some of the theming back to aosp.
Coming from a long line of rooted Nexus phones, I picked up an S5 primarily to get wifi calling (no service at work otherwise).
Can anyone say if the GEL removes this capability? Any other feature losses?

Wifi calling is "baked" into the firmware so changing your launcher has no affect on that. You may loose the Samsung widgets because you've changed the launcher.

TRUE, TRUE. If you install a recovery it will trip KNOX. your best bet is to go to Google play store and install the Paid version of hotspot tether it works, and the developer is could at keeping it up to date. I couldn't get SPCutility to work on freezas fre3 2.16b. Am I missing something or is there another utility that works?

Sorry, the one i linked works on nc5d 100% but in portrait mode only. I dont know anything about whats in fre3 2.16b rom. Sounds like you have custom recovery... backup and odin a stock tar then restore once youve grabbed your msl or maybe just call sprint to save yourself time.
Something I used to do back in the Hero and Evo 3d days was get my MSL and add it as a contact. Unfortunately, I didn't do that on the Note 3. Glad to see SPCUtility was upgraded to work on NC5. Now to make sure I always have my code. Do what you want with that tip. Thanks idone for all the neat stuff you are finding.
There's this terrible fashion going around in the UK of official apps from certain companies not working on rooted devices.
Then here comes ioroot which gracefully roots your device and guess what, does it in such a way that it isn't detected by any app, right out of the box.
I installed CM11 and unfortunately, CM11 does it wrong. I can't run any of the apps now, and some of them are quite important. For example, the Three network has an app called Three inTouch which lets you make calls over Wi-Fi (but through your normal number) in places where there is no mobile reception. It's kind of like your own personal femtocel. The app doesn't work with root.
Tried all the ways out there to hide root, it would seem none work on CM11.
This was just a heads-up. If hiding root is important for you, go with stock and ioroot and NOT CM11.

Voted #1 thread for 100% nonsense.
Seriously, this is utter complete nonsense. The root detection is done on the STOCK ROM. There's no "root detection" happening when CM11 is installed. Period.

The root detection he is referring to is done by the apps not the system...he is saying that the method io root uses cloaks that root from being detected and root is visible to these apps in cm basically making them unusable... Sadly there are a lot of apps now that check for root and won't run due to being "unsafe".

On another note don't know names or if they even still work but there were some apps available that hid root to allow use of these root haters.

Or you could run Root Cloak thru Xposed.

Yes, it eventually comes down to that, and it seems to work about 50% of the time (as in half the apps still detect root even with RootCloak).
RootCloak through Cydia doesn't seem to work at all. Or in other words, I didn't manage to get Cydia running on CM11.
However, Xposed is not without security risks, more so than having root. Plus, I'd really love me some ART runtime right about now, but the Xposed Framwork dev won't be updating it until it gets released officially later this year with the Android L OS.
Ah well, life can't be perfect. I'm not condemning CM11 god now, I'm just wondering, what's different between the two methods of rooting because really, ioroot just worked out of the box.
It rooted the phone and I was prepared to resort to other hiding methods but I didn't need any.
