[Q] Custom Recovery LG VS450PP - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there to all who have stumbled on to this thread. I know that not many know how to build a custom recovery and many who do are busy. If you could I will at the very least try to reward you somehow. If you need the recovery image since yours is messed up feel free to download. If any other files are needed please ask and I will supply them as soon as possible. Thank you and good luck.

custom recovery would be great
There are many people like myself looking for a custom recovery for the LG vs450pp. These are pretty decent phones and i would like to see a few roms made for it... perhaps a custom viper rom & a kernel retaining the knock-on feature. Paid someone a pack of smokes for this phone and im content with it so far as a stock rooted phone goes but further development would be greatly appreciated.

Get the recovery from post #33 in this thread. Start with the first post and read until you get there. Personally tested on both the LS620 and the VS450PP...
A friend is working on a custom ROM, and I hope to test this later tonight or tomorrow. Fingers crossed

I believe stock and debloated stock only so far. Custom recovery has been modified to work from key presses upon boot, but I haven't succeeded on this particular device yet. Look for the LS620 root thread over there.

Thanks I will check out the LS620 root thread.
The debloated stock rom, does everything still function on the phone with that rom and do you have the link to it so I can give it a try or is it in the LS620 thread?
Thx.

Here's the thread, but please note it is for the Realm (LS620) which is a Boost Mobile (Sprint) device. I've only verified the recovery working on my Exceed 2, but still without access to it via cold booting (button presses). The thread starter (bcrichster) is working with SuperR on modding the boot.img for the VS450PP that I supplied them with.
Once past that hurdle, I'll try the debloated Realm ROM on an Exceed 2. I "had" both devices, but soft bricked my Realm and cannot find the .kdz for this anywhere. Before loss of the Realm, I compared the /system of both and they are nearly identical (other than partition "numbers" as I recall, and several carrier specific apps that aren't needed anyway). At least if I have issues, I'll be able to restore my stock nandroid.
In a nutshell, proceed with caution as this is 'technically' for the Realm and a WIP at that. I'll be back with updated info as things progress. I'm just assisting and testing at this point. I'm about to root a new one later tonight and provide them with some (nearly) virgin images to work with.
Just got a PM that the modded boot.img for the VS450PP may be ready for me to test as early as tonight. If the Exceed 2 is your daily driver, you may want to wait just a bit longer...

Thank you for the follow up!
I also found that this phone is also just like the LG - L70? here
So it looks like a good chance we will see some ROM soon then?!
I picked up this phone from BB for $15 on sale over the holiday weekend and I had $10 in BB rewards I had to use up before they expired so for $5 plus tax I thought it would be a fun toy to play with and see how it works with my moto 360. And so far I am happy with it. I mounted a 32GB card in it and moved the apps it would let me move to it.
So far the only issue I have with the phone is Bluetooth music payback to my BT speaker. Seems to break up from time to time. Not sure what that is about...
Anyway sounds like you are close to something so I can wait a bit longer before digging into to guts of this device and will just keep testing it out.
I will keep an eye out for updates and let me know if there is anything I can help with... I do have a some virgin phone with only root access now on it and have dropbox access.

Any updates on this? I just got the LG Optimus Exceed 2 phone (lg-vs450pp) for a good price on amazon ($15)! And if I can get something close to stock android on this it would make a wonderful DEV device.
I was able to root it and put twrp on it as per this thread's instructions.
Looking forward to updates!

I just received 2 more from Amazon today (how can you NOT grab these @ $15?), for a grand total of 8 now (actually 7, as my grandson just flipped an untouched one for $40 last night <g>). Working long hours every day thru the end of the year, and spent a bunch of my time recovering, then assisting on the Realm.
No promises, but I intend to do an extreme debloat the Exceed 2, and at least (help) make a nicer stock ROM, with init.d support. Just too little time at this point
As an aside, there is a better recovery available (2.8.6) you may want to look at. Should I succeed in any ROM tweaks, I'll be using this. Unsure if it will actually matter, as I'm not really a "developer" per se'. The latest TWRP I mention gets the file dates right, and that alone (to me) makes it worth installing. I believe he fixed the screen timeout issue on this release too, but haven't verified it yet myself.
I'm playing with 3 different devices at once, and my "old-timers" is adding to my lack of time. Had to unbrick a Moto G last night, and it consumed some 'precious' time. Arrggghh, too many irons in the fire. And I gotta go bowling in a few minutes. FML...

Awesome, a debloat would be great. I want to tinker with turning this phone into a portable PHP server.

Did anybody ever try this on the LG Exceed 2? Not sure how legit it is.

Where did you find this?

Is this legit?, can someone verify?

I was able to root and install TWRP, supersu. Restarted and the phone is stuck in Verizon logo red screen. I don't remember how to recover (((( Had to reflash again and everything is good now. Phone seems unbrickable.

If you are still looking. Let me know.

I recently got my Lg Optimus Exceed 2 (Verizion Pre-Paid) back from repair from Lg. Is there anything I should do to my phone before I load anything on it? Or save anything on it? Thanks in advance for any help.

YP-G70 US Stock Rooted Rom dump

This was originally an opinion post that turned in to more.. I am leaving the thread intact and the stock rooted rom dump can be found in post #20
Original text:
I picked up a couple of the 5" refurb players for my kids (ages 6&7) for christmas (both are YP-G70CW). I am actually quite impressed with this device, but thats not why i am here.
I plan on rooting them so i can do a hidden install of Cerebrus just in case they lose them or they get stolen. Anyway, since these will be going to my kids, i dont want to heavily mod them, i want them to be reliable.
This is where the opinions come in, do i leave the stock rom on there or is there another reliable rom that would be super kid friendly that has no problems?

sorry guys, i moved this thread.. i accidentally posted it in the dev forum ... i need more coffee this morning!
There aren't really any fully functional roms which will make that much difference.

Thanks.. i will just keep them stock rooted then
i dont think that any anti theft is that helpful due to the lack of mobile data.
unless a thief is dumb enough to connect to their own wifi, there is no way for the galaxy player to report its location
I fully agree with the above comments.
I have a 5.0 for more than one year and now a Nexus 7. if I take at side the device speed (for heavy games) The 5.0 is in my view the best staple in today market. Especially in term of portabilty!
good choice

You can flash a cerebrus zip to the system and hide it from the app drawer. This also keeps it from being removed from a factory reset. If someone stole, or "found it" then they would have to be at least smart enough to flash different firmware, or manually remove it. I would rather have little protection than none at all. And if it fails me then i am only out the $140 per device that i spent.

I have N7, N4, HTC Vivid, an older LG Optimus, a few chinese android knock offs, etc... my kids love playing with my N7 but i wanted to get them something a little more portable that they could easily take back to their mom's house. I came across these refurbed players and knew immediately that it would be perfect for them.
Just like any big kid with a new toy, i couldn't wait to get them and try them out (well, i have to test them, they are refurbs)... And i have to say that i actually really like this device. I kinda want one for myself.
I use chip rom and everything works(its based on GB ) ..i use mine on 1.5 ghz with undervolted FQ and i tell you (at least on chip rom) most apps works faster then on nexus 7..i put side by side nexus 7 and GP5 and press buttons on same time ..in 90% SG5 would open faster or finish faster.

Don't mean to get off topic but can you make a copy of your Stock for the GP5 USA for us?
Sure, give me a few days and I'll see what I can do. Seems as if I have a slight case of food poisoning, so I'm not moving much further than the couch or bathroom. So as soon as I feel like staring at my computer I'll get it

So i still didn't get this... I plugged the one in to my machine with windows booted up and Kies told me there was an update. So i figured i would grab the update and dump that, then also dump my other one without the update and give you guys both.......
Well this turned out to not be an easy process. Kies did something and F'd up the drivers. I spent a good hour (uninstalled/reinstalled drivers, hard reset phone, etc) with it trying to make it see the phone again to no avail. So this morning i booted linux and tried to get a dump and ran out of time. I am off work tomorrow so i should have more time.

I would recommended giving up Kies all together because it's more problematic then it's worth. You could install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11633550 (this) and it'll fix your issue. Sorry for the issues.

yep, i saw that earlier.. i will give it a shot. No worries about the issues, I have been so far up HTC the last few years i need some different exposure.
The one is in the process of uploading now.. I still have to update it yet and get the dump of that one also. But i am going to bed, i have a sick kid to deal with now (guess i had the flu and not food poisoning, lol). I will update with a download link after i get up. Which should be in a less than 5 hours.

*since this was my first attempt, if you have a way to test it, then please do as i dont want to mess up your device. But i followed the instructions and encountered no errors to achieve an Odin flashable TAR file, it was just over 300MB, It zipped down to 183. SO file size to me seems to be normal.
Many many thanks to hanthesolo for pointing me in the right direction!

[Q] Any de-bloated AT&T sense roms yet?

I'm pretty down with the HTC One I just recieved yesterday, but the only thing that is bothering me is all this stupid junk AT&T stuck in there. The fact that I cannot tether either is a bit disheartening. I see there are a few ROMS in the developers subforum, but I haven't been able to check them out yet. Do any of those roms fit that description and if so, which one is the LEAST modified?
I've been using Android Revolution HD 6.0 from the international forums. Certain ROMs do work on our AT&T variants. It has basically everything that the standard Sense has, with tweaks. No AT&T bloatware. I've also been getting pretty awesome battery life. You may want to check it out.

Sorry, here's the link to the page:

If you do decide to try it, make sure to read the entire original post before you do. There is instructions in there about using the volume buttons to select items in the Aroma installer. If you don't, your install may freeze.
I'm hoping we'll be able to flash our AT&T Ones to turn them into the same thing as the Developer Edition that's sold directly by HTC. I've been keeping on eye out for news of this becoming reality but haven't seen anything so far...

if you have an unlocked bootloader its basically the same thing as the dev edition. and once we have S-OFF we will be able to flash official RUU's to the phone
Would the De-odexed ROM allow me to remove the crap AT&T put on the phone? If so, this will probably be the route I'll go, well, as soon as I get my extra dropbox space anyway.

Can't you use the tool kit (in the Android Development section) to root and uninstall via Titanium? I've always done that with stock roms in the past.

Nope the System partition is write protected, so once you reboot all the crap comes back.
+1 for ARHD 7.0, running flawlessly. I'm totally new to Android and flashing ROMs, the ARHD dev and the threads over in the international forum make the whole process easy to learn. I played with the phone for about 2 hours before I became completely fed up with the AT&T claws dug into every aspect of the software, coming from an iPhone I had not realized how bad the bloatware problem has become.

Yeah, what really got me was that even after a day or two of using the phone, the AT&T Address book sync message would still pop up. I had already declined it and stopped any syncing to it. Then, to top it off, after I had already been on several long calls using the phone, the CityID message pops up saying that I'm now in a trial period? It made me decide to go ARHD without a regret. De-bloated, stable, and battery is great for me.
Also went with ARHD. Working wonderfully so far.
Everyone can flash Int'l ROMs with no trouble. ARHD is a great ROM with a great Dev. Give it a try. A make sure you read before you start complaining about LTE signal strength.. The official ATT ROMs fake your signal to make it look better than it is. The Int'l ROMs are the actual strength.

Thanks for the tid bit!! I'm thinking about this ROM as well. The only thing I really need though is Wifi Tethering. Do you know if it can do it without paying AT&T for it? I'm sure some ROMS will have it soon enough. I would even use FOXFI if it would work.
With the ONE I just can't seem to get around AT&T. I'm in the ball park like many others who think tethering should be free. I get the whole "you are paying just for your phone service" and not your laptop or ipad and such; I just don't agree with it, so won't ever pay for it. I'll pay for MP3's, I'll pay for Apps, I just don't think I should line AT&T's pockets for something I already pay for "DATA".
Ok Rant Over. I got out of control there. I apologize.

With ARHD you can turn on Mobile Hotspot and everything I just don't know if ATT will pick up if you're using it. I know with CM, I've used tethering and ATT never said a thing to me. So I'm guessing use it till they send you something.

I posted a ATT Wifi hotspot mod in the dev section yesterday for stock/rooted (deodexed or odexed)
Also - I may be off base, but as far as debloating is concerned, we should be able to do this with an updater script in a recovery flashable package where it's just deleting the packages we don't want. As long as it's done in recovery it should stick on reboot. If we want to start a list of what should be removed, I can put a script together to remove them via recovery and we'll see how it works. (Edit - Working on it now)
Edit: well it removed them from /system/apps, but a few are still showing installed. Guess we'll have to get rid of the data they've created as well? Still playing... either way i managed to get these out of /system/app/:
ATT Device Help, Address Book Sync, Amazon Kindle, CityID, Drive Mode, Family Map, Hot Spot (ATT's), Locker, Messages (ATT's), myATT, navigator (ATTs), Promo Widget, Ready2go, SmartWifi, YPmobile
Sill playing..
Edit: Almost there...
Running Renovate on my AT&T HTC One and it is great. You guys should check it out. Clean rom with AT&T bloat removed, great battery, and some great tweaks.

Here it is. A flashable package that will remove all the ATT bloat described above. Let me know if anyone runs into any issues, or see anything that's not getting removed that should be. I recommend wiping cache and dalvik after flashing.
Im running stock Odexed AT&T rom from JMZ found in development section with Thoravukks Kernel from international HTC one found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2229300 which allowed me to delete all of AT&Ts bloatware from the rom since the kernel Naw read and write. Plus Modaccos xposed framework which allowed me to remap the menu button to the back button by long pressing it. And let me say its running beautifully. No issues at all everything works. Plus i get to keep my AT&T signal icons which i prefer.

Yes. This can absolutely be fixed by flashing a different kernel. This is for those who prefer a fully stock experience, minus the bloat.

Thanks tons! Looks like all the AT&T crud is gone! Totally appreciate this. So far no issues.
And no bloat returns after 2 reboots.
Just wondering, is this 100% uninstall?

I just got back home with my shiny new S4 and I can't wait to get the thing rooted and rom'd. But! Before I take the dive, I'd like to test the waters of this lovely phone's community.
If you have a few minutes to spare:
- What rom/kernel are you using? Why?
- What is one thing that you wish you knew about the S4 before flashing?
Thanks!

As far as I know (which I'm not 100%sure since I'm on mdk) you cannot flash custom roms yet if on the latest update (mj7 with Android 4.3) If you're lucky enough (unlikely) to get one with me7 firmware, you can flash custom roms with safestrap. This phone is not doing so well in the development area as I expected it would before release. Hopefully someone can figure out a way around the locked down bootloader

That makes it painfully obvious that you haven't read much around here.
What you first need to know is what firmware version you have. That determines what you can do.
What you asked is equivalent to saying that you have a car then asking what you can do to improve it - no data on what year or model, or what you want to do. Without that info, how can anyone help you? If you can't even be bothered to figure out what build you have to start with, nobody can suggest anything to help you.

I managed to figure that out a couple minutes ago. I actually got pushed to ME7 while I was rooting my S4 (ironic?) and was able to stop it after that. So, it seems I was one of the lucky(ish) ones. Would've been nice to stay at MDK, but SafeStrap seems to be one hell of a tool.

Hey there... I remember you from the Fascinate forums. I finally ended up getting an S4 about 2 1/2 months ago and for the most part it's a great device, but you can't expect near the same freedom as you had with the Fascinate.
When I got mine I ended up with ME7 so it sounds like you're in the same boat. I have mine rooted, but decided not to use Safestrap because of the limitations it brings (mainly the storage issue). I'm pretty happy with how I have mine set up and it's pretty snappy overall, but I really do wish I had gotten an MDK in order to really flash roms like I used to on my Fascinate.
If you choose to use Safestrap then go nuts and I hope you find some roms you like (Hyperdrive seems to get the most love around here from what I've noticed). I'll just quickly list off the modifications I did to mine that got it to where I like it:
-Froze all bloat with Titanium, including the SDM 1.0 (to prevent unwanted updates)
-Got rid of e911 icon and ongoing WiFi notification
-Installed the International Voice Dialer with call recording
-Installed Volume Boost mod (increased it around 50% over stock)
-Installed Xposed Framework so I could use Greenify features
-Used Greenify to hibernate all misbehaving apps (examples would be Facebook and Google Play Store) (... this increased battery life A LOT)
-Installed AdAway (adblocker)
-Turned all animations down to .5 in developer options and disabled all hovering effects on the lock screen
Doing all that really made this thing a lot better than it was, but I'm still hoping for a true bootloader unlock to start playing with it more. I have found a lot of the Touchwiz features to be quite useful, like the voice control stuff, camera app, etc, so I would probably stick with a modded Touchwiz rom if I had the option. Good luck.
edit: Oh and another thing you might not be aware of - the camera is set to 9.5MP by default in the app, you need to go into settings to use the native 13MP resolution.
One thing to note that no one mentioned (and in case you didn't read elsewhere) is that with SafeStrap you can not use ROMs with custom kernels. So that means no AOSP based ROMs like CM, Carbon, PACman and others since they are all using a custom kernel. At least until they get KEXEC working with SafeStrap (if they get it working). So basically you can only use modded TW roms with a stock kernel.

CM 10..2.1 Fireball and Radio Issue - Upgrade?

I finally got my Incredible 4G LTE to S_off. I flashed recovery to TWRP then tried to flash CM 11 Nightly for Fireball. The flash failed with the message "error updating updater binary in zip file". Fixes suggested included installing a dffferent recovery. I didn't want to do that so installed CM 10.2.1. That worked and it is running but the radio signal indicator was showing a low to no signal. I found this thread that indicates that is cosmetic and that the signal is as strong as before. I haven't noticed any issues with the phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485091
has anyone seen this? Is it fixed in a later version of CM?
Have you tried any other ROMs besides CM?
Not yet. CM on this phone isn't yet 24 hrs old. I probably will live with it at least for the next few days since I am on call this weekend. The phone seems to work just fine otherwise.
Do you have any recommendations for a new ROM ? I am fairly new to Android, and very new to rooting in general. I see the team viper ROMs are discontinued. I also see this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933539
which is a mod of the stock ROM and of course I could in theory restore the stock ROM that I backed up.

While the ViperLTE ROM isn't supported anymore, it still works great. I have been using 2.2.0 (with the Infernal4.1 Kernel) as my daily driver for well over a year. The customizations over stock are great, and the Infernal Kernal adds Swipe2Wake. But, I like HTC Sense. CM is a better choice if you don't particularly care for Sense.
Unfortunately, this phone was the bastard, left-handed, red-headed step-child, thrice removed Verzion castoff that received very little support from Verizon and HTC. The launch was jacked-up, Verizon nixed the HTC Dev unlock for this phone, and root took a long while. As a result, there are not a lot of ROMs or support for it. I am very thankful to the small community that was able to achieve the unlock, s-off and the few ROMs, Kernels and recoveries that we do have.

Yeah, I am learning that as I go. However the phone was free, and I was in a slightly better spot than most cause if I bricked it I could always fall back to my iPhone if I had to. Besides, I learned a lot in the last 10 days. for now at least I will stick with CM and see what happens. It works here around my house, and I am not planning to far this weekend. Next week if I decide to I can try something else.

Good price I bought mine on day of release, and I am still quite happy with it. I have not seen anything out there yet that has a nice small form factor that would be worth changing to. Plus, I still have an unlimited data plan and I'm not inclined to give that up anytime soon. I would be more likely to pick up another "new" Dinc4 at this point if something were to happen to this one.
Well I have built PacRom and LiquidSmooth for this so feel free to give them a go. They both have working data so if you're looking for a stock Google then you should try it if you're S-OFF
Thanks for these 2 new options!!!!!!

Just bought a 6P (Europe). Anything particular I should know?

So my LG G4 finally decided to exhale its last breath. I had a blast with it and learned all the basics about flashing custom ROMs; I unlocked the bootloader, flashed TWRP and installed various CM based ROMs and I had to solve some bootloops too.
Eventually I grew tired of having to install custom ROMs in order to experience the "pure Android experience": first of all I voided the warranty and secondly I lost the full camera's functionality.
That's why I decided to buy a Nexus 6P (Pixel phones are too expensive, I don't like the Moto Z's design and the OP3 is out of stock).
Is there anything I should know about my new 6P?
Will 7.1 be on its way soon (out of developer preview)?
Let's say I'll decide to try out CM14.1, will that void the warranty? Are there risks of bootloops caused by software flashing? Are there ways to return to stock and to relock the bootloader? Does unlocking the bootloader void the warranty?
Thanks guys, take care!
Welcome to the 6P forum dude, I'll try to answer all your questions
1-We should get 7.1 like a week or two after it's out (I mean the OTA) and the factory images *should* be available the same day of the release. Or at least that was how it worked until now, we'll have to wait and see what happens now that the Pixel phones are out.
2-If you flash a custom ROM, yes it will void your warranty, but you can always flash a factory image and then relock the bootloader and have your phone 100% stock, and I'm not sure if this makes you recover your warranty but I'd say yes it does. I would wait for other people's posts to be sure about this though.
3-Yes, there is risk of bootloops if you flash the wrong stuff or if you don't follow each ROM/KERNEL/Whateveryoureflashing.zip instructions. But as long as you flash stable roms I don't think you'll have any problem, and in case of you having a bootloop, just flash another rom or a Google factory image, as easy as that.
As long as you return your unit with full stock (complete stock rom, locked bootloader), your warranty is still valid. And due to European law, they cannot deny fixing the phone even if it has been tampered with. (but as i said, return it with full stock)

Thanks very much for your answers!
Yesterday I've been doing some research here on the forums and on the Android Developers' website in order to avoid questions that have been answered in other threads already!
Everything about the 6P seems easier compared to the G4 (let alone the fact that there's no way to relock the bootloader on it - voiding the warranty for good).
The last doubt I have is this one: let's say I flash a custom recovery (TWRP for example) and then I decide to return to stock with a factory image... Will I be able to "get rid" of the custom recovery or will I have to do additional stuff to overwrite it with the stock recovery?
Thanks again and sorry if my last question has been answered elsewhere already.
The factory image includes the stock recovery so no problem there either. When you flash a factory image it resets everything to stock except for the bootloader, which will keep unlocked, but can be easily locked back through ADB.
P.S: Unlocking/Locking the bootloader wipes all data on the device (That includes internal memory) so if you plan to unlock it consider doing it before installing your apps and setting everything up if you haven't already. And also, flashing a factory image will wipe everything too, so keep that in mind.

Thanks again for your assistance!
At this point I can't wait for the device to arrive at my doorstep, I'm kinda impatient XD.
I have one last question if I may... I was wondering about encryption. Does the phone come encrypted out of the box? Does installing CyanogenMod (13 or 14.1) mean that the phone will be encrypted after the installation itself? Does decryption involve flashing a custom kernel or can it be achieved simply by flashing a factory image?
Thanks, have a nice evening. I won't ask for more, I promise XD.

The phone is stock encrypted. If you want it to not be you have to flash a non enforcing kernel and do a full wipe of data and storage. I'm sure there's plenty of guides on this. Encryption has little impact on the phone from what I've seen. And I've ran unencrypted most of the time I've had it and just recently went to encryption because I couldn't find a non encrypting when I installed the 7.1.1 beta. Factory images do force encrypt so I would flash the non encrypt before booting. I don't know if cyanogen encrypts or not, I haven't messed with it, I just run custom stock.

only one, the best phone there is and will be i guess?
i have had used Samsung phones before (s2 which was one of my favourite, and i often used aosp/cm based roms on it because pure android feel is the best) and i had the s5/note4 both were exynos which had ****ty support for CM , later on i went to get a snapdragon based s5 just for CM!
but then i decided to give a pure android phone a go, thats when i bought a Nexus 6 (but unfortunately it came with a banding in the display ,but i still used it without problems for 9months) and then i got myself the Nexus 6P and i can say this is easily the best phone i have used.
i look at other phones, i take them from the hands of my family members e.g the S7 Edge / Iphone 7+ when i used them for a bit compared to the 6p they are so meh.
i am so used to pure android phones now, plus you get a ton of roms to choose from and there are very good custom kernels and we are getting 7.x nougat.
you chose the right phone !!!!

The G4 lasted me about a year. Now I'm stuck in a bootloop caused by a hardware issue and sadly my warranty is voided. But you know what, I'm kinda happy my G4 died... I've always had iPhones (say what you want about iOS and Apple, but excellent build quality on the hardware side), then I bought a Galaxy S6 (outstanding hardware and build quality, but ****ty TouchWiz) and sold it to buy the G4. The G4 satisfied me because I could flash CyanogenMod and so I was able to experience a smooth and clean UX, but its plastic construction always disappointed me (I am so used to metal and glass...). So, yeah, I decided to go for the 6P to have a "premium" build quality and to experience Android "as it was meant to be experienced".
I could've bought a Moto Z or a Pixel but both were too expensive for my pockets.
Take care!
I was in the same boat. I still had a Note 3 and was waiting for the Note 7, but we all know how that turned out. Then I was baffled by the price of the Pixel and still wanted a phone without bloatware for once, so I bought the 6p and it's not dissappointing so far.
I tried running stock first, but after 3 minutes I was already fed up with all the advertising being thrown towards me, so I went looking for root and a nice Rom.
I ended up with the PureNexus Rom and EX kernel. systemless supersu with suhide and rootswitch (don't even know if suhide is still doing anything), but I'm passing Safetynet checks, so all looks well so far.
Any special reason you want to go for CM? I have been doubting, but since most ROM's are stock based, I didn't see the need to go to CM, but I'm easily convinced by other people's good experiences to give it a try

To help you out with your g4. Try to warm it up in some way. I repair phones and we had a boot looping g4 that booted after we heated to maybe 180°F it managed to boot and we were able to keep it on long enough to recover the data from it.

Well the only reason I wanna go for CM is that I've been a CM user for the last 14 months on my LG G4. I've tried various AOSP based ROMs but I felt like CyanogenMod was the more stable and cohesive. I'm sure other ROMs have more 'hardcore user-friendly' features but I don't need them... So I guess I'm fine with a simpler and more stream-lined ROM.
Also: what's the best solution to avoid ads on the 6P? I used to install AdAway on my LG G4. Are there better options?

Yeah, understandable reason. I have to say Purenexus so far is very stable with some useful options, so you might want to give that one a try as well.
For me Xposed has the best anti ad apps, so until that's released for Nougat, I'm also using Adaway and it's doing fine. Xposed has addons to also eliminate ads in Youtube and other apps, so this will work until then.
Have fun with your phone!
New 6p user here! 6p is a good phone, that's no doubt,
see you around mate!
I had a G4, I was so happy when I finally got rid of that thing. I went from a Nexus 4 and 5 then for some stupid reason bought a G4. Now I've got a N6P and am loving it. Easily getting 6+ hours of screen on time with Nitrogen OS + Kronic kernel.

Make an EFS back up using twrp recovery, save a copy of the backup file on your phone and on your desktop computer/cloud storage. You most likely not gonna need it afterwards but you'll regret not backing it up when you do.
