Hey all! Is the Z Ultra still worth buying today? It has one of the best displays around, its design is not matched and it is half the price than when it was released which is around 300$ now.
But here is my dilema, at 300$ there are small tablets like the galaxy tab S 8.4 and others with great screens and battery life to compete. With that said my biggest concern which led me to consider other devices is the mixed review I got on battery life. But there is no great place to ask except ZU veterans
IS IT THAT BAD?? I do reading and watch occasional videos with average of 4hrs of screen on time with 3g/4g constantly browsing and downloading/uploading. Can't it handel that?
Are the days of the Z Ultra over or does it have some fight in it to compete?? I am all ears to listen to what you all got to say.
Thanks in advance!

Previously on Kitkat I would get around 4.5 hours of screen on time.
Now I'm getting around 2 hours on Lollipop...

Wow 2hrs is ridiculous. Is it under heavy usage like high graphiics games and such or foe simply texting and phone calls? I want to buy it badly but that is not unacceptable for me....

Some wi-fi usage and web browsing. However, this was done whilst the screen was at full brightness.
I'd say Kitkat was better for battery life. Should you be patient, Lolipop 5.1 will be released for the Xperia Z Ultra sometime in February.
Bugs and stability/performance and battery should all be improved.

Normally with every device i have used, i havent been able too see anything while outside. If i turn the brightness up, i can read and see everything fine. The phone has the latest android lollipop, and does have a good display with some still very good specs, i havent found anything that does not run perfectly. With lollipop, this thing just flys. My battery life is around 5 hours with very heavy usage, that is because i am always watching videos, or playing games, searching the web, etc. With light to medium usage this lasts me easily all day and then sone. I have unlimited 4g LTE and stream movies all the time, it works great.

Thanks for replying theinsector!
Ive been asking around and am getting roughly the same answers. 5-6hrs on heavy usage which is good news for me, and with some tweaks and mods things will get even better I hear, which makes it that much great. With the visibility issue, if setting the brightness at maximum will do the trick, then i have no complaints. I rarely use it in bright daylight but I don't want to squint and stress my eyes when I do. thanks again!
Question: August 2015 - is sony ultra z still relevant today for its price? The camera has been a dissapointment to me. I am thinking of selling off and getting similar price phone but with better camera. I don't need big screen, I have since discovered..

I just rebought the device. I have the nexus 6 and I went back to the Z ultra for the third time. I'm running bliss pop w expanded desktop and resized the screens on the launcher and no dock w slim pie. Camera is a disappointment sure. But I love the design, love the size, and still zips through without any issues.

I guess the title says it all. I'm interested in buying the Z Ultra (unlocked international) but I'm very concerned about the battery.
I HATE having to charge my phone in the middle of the day. If it has to happen once a week that's too often for me. What I currently do with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 (which I use as a phone) is I charge it at night when I'm going to sleep. I never have to worry about the charge, even if I am using it constantly all day. If I use the device sparingly I can even stretch it out for two days.
Can this device come even close to that?
Will I have to keep a charger with me at all times?
I can accept a smaller battery than my current amazing performance. What I'm looking for is that most of the time, I can wait to charge my phone until I'm going to bed with average usage. Not constantly checking messages, emails, browser, etc.
Thanks for the answers guys!
hello,
i am also interested to buy the XZU but also worried like you about battery..
What i want to know. how would be the battery life in 1 or 2 years ?
I think we have to wait a few more month to get the best details
The answer is pretty clear. You can't compare the two. 7.7 has nearly 2x battery capacity (5100mAh vs 3000mAh) than ZU. Tab 7.7. It runs on 2 Cortex A9 processer which is slower and use much lesser power than the latest Snapdragon 800 chip.
I can only say battery if the 3G ZU is comparable to Samsung S4 LTE.

So do you mean it can barely get through a day? Rushing to charge it in the evening? Or fine till bedtime?

It all depends on user. How I use the device will be different from everyone else. But generally speaking you can go to the General Section and check the battery usage stats. Most people can last through a working day (ie leave home with 100% and survive until knock off and reach home).

This is one of my biggest dilemma when I was considering the Z Ultra. To be frank, I hated phones without swappable batteries so I rarely buy such phones.
If you share the same concern, ask yourself if you can do with large powerbanks (I'm personally not really fond of the idea). Personally, if possible, I prefer a swappable battery - just change and ready to go.
If you dislike powerbanks, maybe you should wait for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
It's a matter of choice. If you like the phone, buy it. With some tweaks you can make it last a whole day.
I don't think I'll "just buy it". The phone looks beautiful & everything but battery life for me is very important. I have this problem with all phones these days. They can all be made just a tiny bit thicker and have a bigger battery that lasts for a day and a half or two days with a few hours each day of screen time. That way if you use the phone a little too much today, it'll still last till the end of the day.
If you work for Sony you can give them this feedback
All smartphones have this so called 'problem'. The battery just can't handle more than a day with average usage. The only thing remaining is to use apps to hibernate applications,CPU handling and other tweaks,of course,on a rooted phone.

Sorry guys I'm not here to complain!!! I'm just asking about the phone and how it suits my preferences. Great battery life is a requirement for me and others who have posted in this thread. Tweaks might help, but I'm not interested in spending my time fiddling till I get it just right. I've also heard that a lot of Sony devices can have very long standby time which is great, but I also want long usage time.
For now I'll stick to my (admittedly crazy) way of using my tablet as a phone till someone makes a nice large screened phone (6+) with great (not average) battery life. There are smaller phones with great battery life, this however is a new size that I'm interested in (big but not toooo big) but my original requirement remains: great battery life.

Not a bad choice, HD screen with 2 more A9 cores compared to his 7.7 tab with a whooping 4050mAh battery for a smartphone these days.
Still kinda an upgrade for him

Actually, it's not too bad. I've even used the Note 10.1 before which is a 720p stretched over 10.1'' screen
Honestly it isn't too bad considering the viewing distance (remember PPI alone doesn't mean a thing if you don't take into account of the viewing distance) but once you've been spoilt by FHD screens.. there's no going back

I checked and didn't find the Huawei in my country.
About pixel density, at 6 inches 1280 * 720 is pretty good but of course Sony's 1080p is amazing.
I just read the Engadget review of the Z Ultra and it seems pretty average for a phone but strange that they played one game for one hour and lost 40% of the charge! I'm not ready to deal with that unfortunately.
Seriously the device is expensive but I would've bought it in 2 seconds if the battery was better.

They played Riptide GP 2 for an hour. Have you seen that game? It's not exactly Tetris, so it's understandable that it sucks the life out of the battery. I watched a YouTube review of Riptide, and they said it kills the battery, and the reviewer played it on a different device (can't remember which, but it was either the Note 2, S4, HTC One or the Moto X)
I did a Google search for external power back for an 'Xperia z ', as this mobiles been around for a while.
I found an external battery product for the Xperia z from a company called 'Power Bank', and decided to send them an email enquiry regarding any possibilities that they might do a similar the market product for the 'Xperia z ultra', they replied saying that it is very likely that they will have something in on the market, and to watch their website during the coming months.
So, for anyone who's thinking of getting one, or has one already, there's a good change the battery stamina issue may well get solved.
Hope this info helps.

Hey there,
I want to buy a new phone and put my C5303 away ... I am saw some people complaining about overheating Z5C. Should I buy Z3C or Z5C?
What will I do with the phone?
1.Play HD games (rr3,asphalt 8 etc.)
2.Texting
3.Take so much photos (not recording videos so much but I will record some)
4.And of course phone calls
Thanks to those people who will help me
Z5c. The camera is far better than on z3c. So is gaming
Go for the Z3 compact! Ive had the Z3 compact and now ive got the Z5 compact, the Z5c heats up when playing games (even with less demanding ones like terraria) and this results in battery drain. Where the Z3c used to last me a day with the same use the Z5c has to be charged twice daily. I would go back to the Z3c if I could, it was a great device and probably the best phone I've ever had.
Z5c definitely gets warm but not super hot unless you are installing apps or doing something intense while gaming...
I myself play asphalt 8 and it's really just fine, works great.
As for battery life, any heavy 3d app is bound to eat battery on any device , I'd say you can get over an hour of gaming and still make it to the end of the day, I've never had to charge my Z5c twice in a day and with casual use (no heavy 3d gaming) I usually start the next day with about 50-60%
If you want a dependable camera, you'll need Z5c. Z3c's camera is really not good at all. I've had both and the difference is significant. Plus, the capless usb is a huge advantage. The front camera is also far better on z5c.
I was in the same doubt: Z5C for sure! the construction itself (the z5c it's nicer than z3c), the battery is ok (normally use: BT activated non-stop, Mobile Data, 30min-1h angry birds 2, about 2-3h calls, and playing around the phone a lot, music about 1-2h - charged in the morning, and in the evening is about 40-50% which is impressive for me, coming from Galaxy S6 dual sim where I had to charge it twice per day!). The camera is definitely better (I spent about 1 day to compare other phones with Z5 and Z5C)
I won't call it either warm or super hot but it does heat up. Camera on z5c is way better and screen improved. The battery life will just getting better after Android 6.0 so it should not be a problem. If you do real playing HD games full day then z3c might be more safe for it's lower temp.
So most of you guys are saying that Z5C is better than Z3C. I will get the Z5C %70. I will get it from Dubai so not sure about the price. Anyway thanks for help I think Z5C should be a good device for me. Have a nice day!
I have the Z5C and I really dislike it. Great phone ruined with Snapdragon 810.
Some things are just unusable on this phone. Like WiFi hotspot with LTE. Phone turns it off automatically after a while since the phone gets too hot.
Really disappointed on this phone. 1/10
Edit:
And this issue happened to me while the phone was not even charging, so I'm guessing that it lasts even shorter period of time if the phone is charging.
We used to use my phone as a router while not at home since I've got unlimited 150 MB/s LTE data plan.
But with this device it is actually impossible to use it for this purpose.
Also the phone also shuts down the camera if taking 4k video for more than a few minutes. The same error message appears about the temperature as with the LTE WiFi hotspot.
Other that that the phone is great, but still. Anyone needing these features should get some other phone.
I could live with these issues if the phone was actually cheap, but Z5C is not a cheap phone.

No, I wouldn't know where to find 150 Mbps LTE. I use it like I imagine most people do, with one or two devices to access various web sites. I do stream Youtube with it and have not had any problems. Yours sounds like a special use case.

Yeah sorry if I was vague about the issue. But yeah light use is no problem. But my previous phone had no issues with this kind of usage.
Perhaps I'll need to root and downclock or something when using this for that purpose.

and better camera, battery is ok, if don't use wifi much can last 2 says without problem, calls, sms, 4g is always on checking mails, facebook, tapatalk, i charge it every night so i have whole day without problems
I did exactly that, how i felt? Well 50/50 to be honest. I love the Z5 sleek design over the Z3. However the minimal upgrades (Speaker, USB, Cpu and camera) aren't all that beneficial for moving tier. When it comes down to lag or performing task on the phone, its literally the least thing you'd notice, practically none at all except keyboard delays.
Battery is Okay, I can use it 2 days and be at 15% on the second day afternoon. So its a little tight but it does the job, however I remember with the z3 if would last me 2-3 days easily heck even 4.
Its up to you. Z5 family are the last spring of the Z series
Android Central says the battery is "great", but I don't trust reviews until XDA can prove it! Show us your screenshots if you happen to have an X Compact.
With mode Stamina performance.
well seems ok, thank you for the screenshot.
after 3 days in normal mode. (no stamina)
My battery life is insane, it's the best I've ever had on android.
I'm at 41% battery in the screen shot attached. And I've already got 4+ hours of SOT.
I've watched YouTube videos, been on Facebook, Twitter etc and been listening to the radio/music In the gym.
Some proper voodoo going on here, but now I get why they used the smaller, nippier processor. :victory:
Anyone who's used Z2 here? I wonder how the battery performs compared to my Z2. Endurance Rating in GSMArena says 73 hours compared to the 89 hours of the Z2.

GSMArena change the battery testing method in this year.
Every phone that GSMArena reviewed before 2016 have the brightness adjust by postioning the slider at 50% when do a battery test, but this year they fix the brightness to 200 nits.
http://gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_x_compact-review-1495p3.php
the article said the X Compact have 106 nits brightness when adjust the slider at 50%. That's mean it will get the better result if they use the old method for testing like Z2.

Thanks, I like hearing that, I'm not one who keeps the brightness above 50% much, only in rare occasions, I usually keep it at 30-40%, and 0% during the night.
Mine sucks. Literally. I enabled the battery optimisation (on the top right 3 dots menu), Stamina should kick at 20% or below, no Ultra Stamina. The last hours have been good compared to the other days.

Glad you like it, bet it feels like a big jump up from the m2. Go to settings location tap the three dots top right and then turn both sliders to the off position WiFi and Bluetooth are always scanning in the background for connections for Google even if you turn them off in the settings on mm it crucified the battery on my xa. I'm getting between 3.5-5hrs screen time from a 2300mah battery not used stamina mode since getting it in July.
Another top tip install greenify and activate the aggressive doze and doze on the go feature via adb it's literally two command lines it makes doze work more like old stamina mode did and it works on unrooted stock devices.

Hey Aidy, long time no see!
yeah, I already did the trick of disabling WiFi and BT on Location settings. This could be why my battery improved in the last couple of days. It was consuming up to 6% per hour! But there must be something wrong with my settings. I synched the XC with the M2 via Xperia Transfer and something may have gone banana.
I mean, now I am at 22% after 32h, but only with 1h 40m of screen. The battery life raised also because I didn't touch the phone much. I dunno, my feeling is also that MM on XC is pretty bugged at the moment. The brightness goes to down 0, the WiFi connection is worse than the one on M2 (!!) and the stupid Xperia Home breaks my themes (fixed installing 10.0.A.0.73 from apkmirror. But also the latest Xperia Home beta is fine). And sometime it heats just doing nothing.
The performances are amazing, though! I can't make it lagging!! Well.. Actually I can. Enabling the Stamina mode. It isn't real lag but it feels like it goes down from 60 to 30 fps. I'd love to know why many complained about the lack of Stamina mode if the most it seems to do is to reduce the performances. And what the heck is that Ultra Stamina anyway.
PS: But yes, it has been a quite nice jump! Hopefully this one will last AT LEAST 3 years in terms of updates.

I dunno. The Xperia Z went through all updates from Jelly Bean 4.1.2 up to Lollipop 5.1.1. The Z3 won't get Nougat because (so I understood) Google simply doesn't support that HW for new Android releases.
But I see now that Sony calls the Xperia XC a "Premium Phone", the flagship for the X series starts with the Xperia XZ. And as premium we don't even get the Xperia Lounge gold subscription. Stingy b***s.
Yeah.. Android 8 might be the last. So annoying.
How do you know if quick charge is working? I downloaded Ampere and another battery tester app. Used the provided usb and an expensive Anker one and both apps and cables show 1050 mA charging using the provided QC3.0 charger. Does the screen need to be off or do I just not under quick charge? This is my first new phone in 4 years lol. Still loving my optimus g.
Anyone compare it to a Z3c? I typically get 5-7 hours of SoT on my 2014 Z3c and regularly go 3 days between charges if I don't use it much, which I've come to consider the norm now. This with Stamina mode only set to come on when the battery is under 35%. Will the Xc do as well?
Granted, it took a while to configure the Z3c to maximize battery -- disabling various pointless background apps and processes etc. -- but after size, the battery life is my favorite aspect of the Z3c.
It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Sony Xperia X Compact before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Anyone have any feedback? How does it compare to the s7 and s8? The original x?
I just want a small phone with good battery life as my s8 is too big.
I usually get about 7 or 8 hours

Really depends how you use. Example, if I have Bluetooth on always for Mi Band 2 connection, then it's about 3-5 hours. When it's off, it's 5-6 or even more hours. Coming from Samsung s6 it's real improvement.

Yesterday, with μTorrent open for 1-2 hours and I watched Saw IV for 1 hour.
I am thinking about getting a XC as backup phone but wondering how long is SOT while playing games and if it gets hot.

Are you going to buy a backup phone for playing games...? It will definately be fine though. It does not get hot and it's faster than you think.

Well the games I am looking at is mainly puzzle games, just worried mainly about performance since previous main phone was a xperia m4 aqua that couldn't do plain games and overheated. So I got myself a new main phone, axon7 and handles everything I toss at it but I still want a small and comfy phone for easy use on the go.

Go for the X Compact without a second thought. It has nothing to do with the M series by Sony, and handles everything in a surprisingly stable way.

Usually 2:30/3 hours of SoT.
Sadly Phone Idle process is a monster in battery draining. Never had more than 3 hours and half, even without playing games or watching videos.
Wonderful
