Hi everyone,
I must point out that I am pretty new to the whole custom ROM thing, I still have the stock ROM and everything on my xperia x10,
so my question is which ROM gives the best performance (ie less lag, good battery life, not many bugs, etc)? and can you give me simple instructions on how to install it because I don't want to screw something up and brick my phone, please?
Also when having a custom ROM installed, are you able to implement (install) patches given out by sony ericsson or you just follow the forum and wait for the developer of the ROM to make a patch, and if there's a patch from the developer how do you install it? (I presume you can't install the patches from sony ericsson, I'm just asking). And how often does the developer release the patches?
And do I have to delete everything with a factory reset from my phone before I do ANYTHING? at which step should it be done? can I backup everything using backup and restore program that's already aboard the x10 and restore it later, or the program will disappear when I install a custom ROM? if it wont, will it bring back my sms and mms effectively, and applications too?
Try this, Wolfbreak's CM 6.1.3 V54(fully working, very stable froyo 2.2 rom with CyanogenMod settings and themes.

I'm definitely a fan of trips miui rom. He also just came out with a miui gingerbread rom, it's a bit unstable at this point though.
Sent from my X10i TripNMiUI using XDA App
use wolfbreak's latest rom. it's very stable with lots of things you can tweak and have fun with!

+1 for wolfbreak's
Hi there, as you can see from my post count, I'm pretty new to this as well. I've only tried wolfbreak so far but am amazed at it's stability. As far as I've seen you will lose SMS etc however lots of things can be saved to the cloud, so first thing I'd do is make sure all contacts are marked as Google sync
I initially found the flashing to be problematic, but that was mostly because I was an idiot and failed to notice that the flashing software also adds functions such root access and xrecovery when the phone is NOT in flash mode. Since. Then I've been able to upgrade to the latest version (06) without even using a computer. Simply downloading the file onto my phone, moving it with the included file manager and rebooting to the recovery menu
I know have a faster more responsive phone with lots of added features such as Flash, Voice Search and loads more customization options. IMHO well worth the twenty minutes or so it will initially take
Make a note of your favourite apps as well, as the market only remembers paid for apps not your free ones, but for me the change over was pretty seamless and after only a day and a half with it am more than happy. So much stuff is held within the cloud that setting back up isn't the mega ballache it seems before doing it
Wolfbreak's ROM is the most 'fun' to use, the most tweaks avaliable
TripnMIUI's ROM is one you need if you just want your phone to work. Also, it has an iphone-like look (IMO I hate it, but some people like it)
Jereplea's Gingerbread mod is for those who want to be active in making the ROM better and test Gingerbread and custom kernels. It's not really that stable, but it's getting better by the day and it's the most updated ROM.
IMO those are the 3 big ROMS, there are smaller ones and you're free to check them out, they're pretty good too, but those are just my opinions on the top 3 ROMS.

you can keep your sms, call logs, contacts by using mybackup root
Thank-you, that certainly makes me more tempted to try the other flavours out there, as I said I'm new to Android fiddling, appreciate the advice
Awesome ROM i'm using right now is Freex10 Beta 4 (Android 2.2), with the video recorder fixed. The ROM is stable and excellent. Runs really fast.

If you want a really good looking ROM, try the Bitsnacker 2.1 rom. It is basically the stock rom with the bitsnacker blue glow theme.

If you mean THEMES, check the bitsnacker theme out for the x10 which works on android 2.1 stock and 2.2 Free X10 Beta 4 (for Freex10 ignore first post, check the second half way down the screen)

the answer will always be it depends on what you want from a device and its really your opinion and your opinion alone thatll lewt you decide
another +1 for tripnmiui's rom, pretty well featured
for me TripNMiui is always the best
TripNMiui with custum kernel
I'd say Wolfbreak's so far...
It runs flawlessly...
I've been testing many custom ROMs for a while, and up to now, the ones I liked the most are TripNMiUI's and Wolfbreak's ones. It's hard even to pick up one of them... TripNMiUI's has a great visual and is very clean. Wolfbreak's, in the other hand, works flawlessly and very stable, and I love that ARC's style.
Actually, I'm using Wolfbreak's now.

Or use the app Titanium Backup to restore all apps and data when switching. Works like a charm for me.
My friend bought xperia mini with stock ROM version 2.3.4, and i have xperia Live With Walkman.

So how the hell does she get smooth playing flash video from this TV site: http://www.navidiku.rs/tv-uzivo/tv-pink
While i have to overclock my phone to 1800Mhz to make it bearlly smooth...HOW is that possible???
I checked she had flash player 10.3.186.3 and i downloaded and installed that one but its the same thing...:/ i had Flash 11 before.
I can play Youtube video 360p smooth and around 1400Mhz 480p smooth. And phone is overall very snappy and fast, i mean i can play N64 games smooth, like Extreme G 2 for example...
So why is mine phone choppy while her is running smooth on stock 1000Mhz...?
1400...1800MHz are you serious.... :what:
You should not overclock your phone to such high frequency... It will burn down your CPU...

I did not do any adittional tweaks, also, only apps that are running in the background are Settings and Lg keyboard, because i kill all the running apps when i reboot my phone to free all the RAM.
Also, as far as i know, you can overclock your phone as long as it doesn't overheat... But still, that's why i want to make it go smooth, i want to make overclocking less needed...
Looking at the kernel thread it appears to be quite old, try using the CM7 Kernel instead, make some tweaks and see how that goes.

Just to be clear, killing some apps in ram manually is not, efficient; it may really affect the performance (many topics/debates already out there). Try testing it with uninstalled apps (clean rom with minimal needed apps). And I agree many other factors may still affect it(scripts, tweaks, etc).
K thx. I will try out some other ROMs and kernels...hope to find something similar to CyanogenMod...I cant use kernel provided with ROM because phone is then loaded with bugs (no second speaker, camera freezing, touchscreen problems...etc) because fix for these only works on Rage kernel.
I just installed Geewiz 4.2.1 on my unused Samsung Fascinate. It runs like a top, has root access and runs Go Launcher like it was made for it.
When I switched from Verizon, I had no use for this phone, but, now it makes an excellent home phone with Google Voice with GrooveIP lite.
This is NOT for phones with active service. It uses wifi, not service provider(Verizon,Att, etc.) All other features work well: gps, sensors, etc. The built-in launcher is ok. The recovery is excellent. If I could post to his site, I would, but hopefully he will see this and continue his good work.
Find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2088224
I think you meant to link to this version of the ROM, the WiFi Only Media version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2088139
I installed the version you are referring to on my Fascinate and it works great through Verizon. I really liked the simple flashing using ODIN. I've had a few issues that I've posted about elsewhere related to restoring Apps with TiBU and his recent update but otherwise I'm really pleased. So cool to have the ROM that runs on a Nexus on my Fascinate.
My friends I need your help otherwise I will really be crazy or smash in my S3.
Firstly, I am an experienced user for flashing ROM, kernel etc. So You can ask me, if you need anything detailed.
I have serious RAM problems with my S3. My apps always restarting themselves including my Launcher, Nova. Because of this problem I jumped from ROM to ROM and waited with hope for every update in ROMs. But no help. I have this problem in every ROM I used and maybe the problem is hardware related. I don't know... I need your help about this issue.
I tried Archidroid 5.1 and Blisspop ROMs for a long time ( 6-7 months) and yesterday flashed NeatROM 4.3 to get rid of this problem but it is even worse in this ROM. When I go to working apps list from settings I see every second an app starts itself including Launcher and free RAM is around 15-90 MB. Since the launcher starts itself, apps and widgets loads themselves everytime, when I go to homepage from an app or settings. I always use greenify and now in NeatROM 4.3 I use it with xposed modules of it. Also I don't have so many apps running in the background but I don't know why I experience these issues.
Now, I use NeatROM 8.3 Jellybean 4.3 with Boeffla Kernel 5.1. After made a clean flash, I restored my apps with Titanium Backup with app+data. Then ı flashed Boeffla Kernel with wiping dalvik and cache.
My apps running in the background and approximate RAM usage for them is like this.
Nova Launcher >>> 35-60 MB
SwiftKey Keyboard >>>15-45 MB
Handcent SMS >>> 20-50 MB
Poweramp Music Player >>> 15-30 MB
Beautiful Widget >>> 5-20 MB
Jorte Calendar >>> 7-15 MB
Greenify >>> 7-15 MB
Adhan Time PRO >>> 10-20 MB
Beside these apps, Google Play Services has 3 apps and consuming at least 60-90 MB
I didn't install Facebook, Messenger etc. apps that consume a lot of RAM. Also, Instagram, Swarm etc. apps are always greenified.
With Beoffla Kernel, I tried some tweaks in both Lollipop ROMs and now with JellyBean too. Tweaked Android LMK settings in Boeffla Settings but no help with it and I loaded default settings again.
Now Phone is so slow and buggy, When I open an app and turn back to homepage, launcher items reload themselves slowly. On Homepage of launcher, I have Total 4 widgets in 4 pages and shortcuts for apps. Are those widgets heavy for the launcher? (See screenshots)
You can see my screenshots for launcher homepages, working apps list and turned off apps with Titanium Backup.
What could be the problem? Should I remove some of the above apps too? Am I doing something wrong? Could Restoring apps with their data can be the reason? Are the above apps heavy for S3?
Or do you thing my S3 has a hardware problem?
Please anyone who have an idea or suggestion comment here. I am really so pissed of with these issues I want to flash a stable customized ROM and use it until I upgrade my phone to a new one. Please help me especially developers.
I have used many different ROMS too. Some rebooted, others just ran out of memory. I decided that the real problem was Lollipop based ROMs.
So some months ago I flashed Slim i9300 4.4.4 -- I currently use build 9 (with SF fix -- at least for the bugs affecting KK Roms).
I flashed it using TWRP 2.8.6.1 though I now use TWRP 2.8.7.0.
Kernel: Boeffla 2.9 (with a BC file -- built by Edossi)
Gapps: Slim addons full gapps 4.4.4 build 9 - 20150107 zip.
SuperSU 2.49.
I use Nova Launcher.
I have Xposed installed and run Gravity Box 4.4.4 and Greenify from there.
I have an add blocker installed.
I have many heavy apps including Chrome and financial apps. I use BBC iplayer and watch streaming sport broadcasts on it too.
It NEVER reboots.
(add: My 4 year daughter can operate my S3 and she watches youtube for kids without any crashes)
If you install these and you still have crashes, I suggest that you have some data in your folders which is causing problems and draining your memory.
If you need links to any of these, I will provide them.

Thank you. But I dont have any reboots. My problem isn't about Rebooting. My problem is about insufficient RAM. My phone does't operate well when there are some apps running in the background.

At least for 3 years I haven't used or tried any official firmware. My problem generally occurs after installing all the apps I used. On a clean flashed ROM I didn't have any RAM problem. I got problems after number of apps in phone and running in background increase. After I have customise the phone after flashing a ROM in a few hours phone gets slow and after 1 week it becomes unusable.

To be sure, I think you should try to install and use latest official firmware. with full wipe, root the phone, install and use TB to restore your apps over official firmware and try again your phone regarding RAM managment.
If you haven't problems anymore, then you don't have hardware issue and maybe your favorite apps aren't be the culprit.
Otherwise, if you still have RAM problems, then 2 options :
1- One or several of your apps are causing the RAM issue
2- You have hardware issue
I can't help anymore if you are sure that you have done everything possible with custom kernels / custom ROMs...
I think baltics is pointing you in the right direction. Best guess is there's an unruly app being greedy with your memory.
If you don't mind experimenting a little bit, I suggest you "step backward" a little bit, give KK another try and see if (after restoring your apps) you still are having problems. My personal recommendation is to try L-Droid KK here, because I used it for a daily driver for the life of the ROM, and it's bulletproof, while having about every feature you could ask for in a ROM. I only gave it up because after trying Lollipop, I really liked the format. The developer had planned to make a Lollipop, but his S3 died so he never started development.
Anyway, if you have problems with your equipment with this ROM, then you have either a hardware problem or a misbehaving app. And you can check the last choice by a VERY selective restore of your apps, one at a time.
Good luck, would be very interested to hear how it works out!
I'd suggest to install the latest cm11 nightly with boeffla kernel NG v2.12. Lollipop is quite memory intensive for S3. cm11 is relatively vanilla and kitkat runs well on s3. I'd also suggest using this profile: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57850654&postcount=1422 but make sure you reset LMK values after applying. And if I'm not wrong, I believe the deadline governor caters more for multitasking? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Do you have greenify donation package with xposed? You have to equip these items on cm 12.1 greenifying all system and user apps except Google play services, media storage, contacts storage and your launcher. Always keep your apps fully greenified. Your problem is not that complicated. Just use this trick and your phone will fly. And as I said always keep the apps you don't need greenified.

Thank you so much all! I have greenify donation package and now on JellYbean 4.3 I have xposed module too. I greenified most of the apps and it is much more better but still launcher loads widgets and shortcuts after coming back to homepage. However I haven't experienced crash on other apps like in Lollipop ROMs. Actually at this moment I am so confused about which version to flash because from one side I want to use the latest stable Android build Lollipop on the other side I want a stable and fast phone. With Lollipop ROMs it seems not probable. Does Xposed module works without problem on Lollipop ROMs? If yes which xposed installer should I flash. I have tried BlissPop and Archidroid ROMs but not Resurruction Remix yet. I may want to give it a try. Also I want to try a clean Lollipop ROM without restoring the apps but just downloading them from Store. And just the essential ones not all the apps. I have approximately 140-150 Apps on my phone but just 6-7 of them are running all others are greenified. Does this still affect the Ram management? In my opinion the number of apps isn't important as long as there are enough space in internal SD card. Only the running apps are related to RAM management right? So it should not be a matter to have 25 or 250 apps in the phone. Only the running apps in background should affect the performance of RAM. Which ROM do you suggest and with which Kernel?
BlissPop,
ArchiDroid,
ResurrectionRemix,
Any KitKat ROM you offer,
Any Jellybean ROM you offer,
ArchiKernel,
Boeffla Kernel,
Which version of ROM and Kernel
I like the options in Blisspop to customise the ROM but I experience crash issues in almost every app after restoring 150-200 apps. Before restoring i didn't experienced issues but it didn't last long. I generally restore in 20 minutes after flashing a ROM.
Archidroid doesn't have customisation options in the ROM so generally it is my second option to give a try.
I flashed Resurrection Remix only one time 2 or 3 months ago and even though it was a full wipe install I couldn't start the phone with that version it was always in bootloop. So I never tried it again but I may give it a try if you suggest again.
Personally, I always prefered Beoffla Kernel (I don't find a spesific superiority) but for Lollipop it is end of devolopment and there is no stable one for Lollipop. I tried Archi Kernel for it but battery seems more consuming with it.
I believe now the problem isn't about a hardware 'cause the apps doesn't crash with Jellybean. Only they don't stay at memory after changing the apps. I mean multitasking isn't working properly and this should be because of the number of apps. What do you suggest for the apps I used. Is it heavy for S3. Nova Launcher, SwiftKey Keyboard, Jorte Calendar, Beautiful Widgets, Tesla Unread for Nova Launcher, Poweramp Music Player and system apps are running in the background and still phone says only 15 mb free ram. It is so weird how it is 15 mb. My Uncle has an Galaxy Ace 2 and it has about 570 Mb. it also has the same apps except for keyboard app but it has 100-150 mb of free RAM all the time and it is Android 4.1.1 version stock rooted.
How much RAM do the Android OS versions consume for the system?
I am so sorry for long replies. I want to solve this problems until I buy an LG G4 in a few months...
Waiting your comments... Thank you.
Mate in my opinion almost all of the latest lollipop rom builds are stable and perfect with greenify. I myself use Resurrection Remix rom and have no problem but if you don't like it you can try this too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development/rom-cyanogenmod-12-1-i9300-t3254215
In the other hand tomorrow the first official cm 13 build will be released and as I tried the unofficial ones they were pretty flawless. You can wait and use them but if you hate bugs use cm 12.1 latest builds. About your launcher I only recommend stock Google now launcher. It is goddamn fast. Don't use nova or anything else, even trebechut is buggy and laggy. And keep in mind : never ever hibernate Google services app and Google now app this can make you slow!! And about kernel: no need for any custom one use the ones that come with the rom. Trust me it will work fine. And I Strongly recommend open gapps they are amazing: www.opengapps.org and don't worry you don't need to tweak anything just keep greenified I always have 300-400 free ram?

Hi, this is Mohand,
If you're on S3, then apply this procedure to the letter: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development/rom-archidroid-v2-4-6-power-hands-t2354859
Unless you have hardware problems with your phone (as physical accident) you wouldn't experience any other issue with this custom rom: ArchiDroid-3.1.5
Why use Nova anyway? Stick to default launcher.
And you can use Dark Material for a change with an amazing set of layers.
Hello dear community!
First of all: This is not the usual "What is the best ROM" thread. Its something different:
I have tried to compare a lot of ROMs from the XDA-Forum, and there are many awesome ROMs here. Unfortunately, I have yet to finde one which suits my special needs. Those needs are actually pretty simple (I guess )
The ROM should be VERY lightweight, not any Bloatware on it and only background processes which are really really necessary should run.
I do NOT need any visual or style improvements. It can be a VERY simple ROM, I don't care for any animation, color-customization or awesome theme. Also, I do not need any neat features.
I don't care about the battery life of my phone, but the thing is, that it should run as fast as possible with this ROM - thats why no background processes, bloatware or awesome looks which might slow things down. Fast and simple.
THANK YOU in advance for any suggestions.
Kind regards
"best rom" threads are not allowed on xda. I could recommend one that you might find totally garbage so there is no point.
Your choice, your problem.

This is not the usual "Give me the best ROM" Thread. I am looking for something pretty specific I guess. Like I said in my first post here: I am looking for a VERY lightweight ROM, which does not include and additional Apps or Bloatware - just the simplest things: a Browser, Clock + Alarm, Camera, Dialing-App, Contacts-App, Messages App (and this is basically it).
Kind regards
Try a CM ROM with pico gapps.
I tried many roms from this place so I can say that the most speed is Archidroid - https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development/rom-archidroid-v2-4-6-power-hands-t2354859
Anyway, I use Crdroid v 2.1 with elite boeffla kernel and I did not install gapps. I prefer to install apps myself. Google play service take some ram but when i will install important for me apps i do not open this again. I use NovaLauncher on desktop and NowBrowser as browser. I have 478 mb used on desktop but I use many widgets, omniswitch, lmt but phone is speed as wind I use monochromacy style from developer settings.

I tried CM 14 (the latest Nightly), and it was quite nice! However, I wanted to try out new stuff, and I found out that ROMs can be quite a bit more faster - as I have seen in ArchiDroid. But there is that issue with the Boot-Loop which forced me to move away. Right now I am on Hyper Rom, and it seems to work quite nice, lets see if performs well or gets slow very fast.

I tried ArchiDroid for about a week. It was the fastest ROM so far, but unfortunately it gets stuck in a Boot Loop if I restart or Power Up the Phone. I always had to wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache to get it working again (and booting up lasts more then 15 minutes in that case, since it has to check all apps).
I might try Crdoid. Right now I am on Hyper Rom however. Lets see how this performs. THANK YOU for the suggestions!
Guys, if you find any other Rom which might be very lightweight and fast (and possibly without any major Bugs like ArchiDroid in my case), it would be GREATLY appreciated! )
Kind regards
