Improving rooted Venue 7 Battery Life.... - Dell Venue

There aren't gonna be any roms or kernels obviously so how do we improve the battery life on our Venue 7s that are rooted?
I know Greenify is useful especially for apps with high wakeclock triggers but what else can you do? Deep Sleep Xposed Module? On-demand governor in whichever CPU control program?

Turn on airplane mode when you don't need network connections. Turn off any unnecessary apps.
I use Venue 7 for reading books a lot of times. I get close to 10 hours of reading time before needing a re-charge.

Crazy battery drain // please help.

How you guys get even 2 days of battery??
I am tired of tryin gall the combinations of settings / kernel / ROMS nothing has helped till date.
I am not able to get battery for a complete day. Freaking it drains it off in 9-10 hours.
There are users who are getting 2 days of battery with wifi/edge on at all the time, with overclocked phone, and many other options enabled. But I am not getting any of these.
My usage includes
* 1-2 hrs of music
* 1-2 hrs of edge
* frequent texting but can be summarized for 1 hr in a day.
* hardly 10-30 mins of calls
* 10-30mins of games
CyanogenMatt 1.1
franco kernel 19.4 gbs v18cfs
InteractiveX 480-600 mhz
all this is normal and way below average usage but still I am not able to get battery life. I hate recharging the phone after every few hours. Have searched forums tried suggestion but nothing worked.
Maybe I am choosing wrong combination of ROM / kernel , I have gone complete clueless now, any help or suggestion is welcome.

It is because of usage patterns. Based on your usage, I think its normally for your battery to drain just like that.

Thanks for replying terratrix,
but users are using continuous wi-fi and get a complete day of battery, I dont even use that. AFAIK wi-fi uses more battery than EDGE. Can you suggest me proper ROM+kernel combination?
I installed cyanogenmatt 1.1 thinking it would improve battery life but it didnt.

Well theta because they are using the phone less often. You are wrong , wifi consumes far less battery than edge. Wifi on standby drains minimal battery.

It's mostly about background tasks. Install supercharger and a task killer to kill your tasks on screen off. Then disable unneeded autostarting applications with Gemini or Autostarts. This way I get about 1% battery for 4 hours without using my phone. And I strongly advice you to use 480/YourMaxStable with SmartassV2 as Smartass automatically manages the current CPU frequency. Your brightness should be between 25 and 50%. And also disable any unused at the moment radio (including mobile data).
how would I disable radio?
do you mean not using radio is disable it??
Well here's how my phone goes on for 2 days
android assistant app for cleaning memory every 10 minutes and for killing apps on startup
Advanced task killer for killing tasks(set on auto kill)
Antutu power saver which has some good features(puts phone on flight mode at night for few hours)
or use juice defender(has extra features)
try keeping edge/3g/wi-fi/bluetooth/gps off when not using(saves a lot of battery)
reduced brightness(40-50%)
and keep screen off when not in use
also keep OC freq at 729/480 its the best know OC for our phone performance and battery wise
and InteractiveX is well know for battery saving
(i prefer on-demand because of performance and gaming )
the above things help me use my phone for 2 days or i must say 1&1/2 day
with 4-5 hours gaming(3d HD games)
1-2hours browsing the net
few messages and calls here and there
on a full charge and normal usage at the end of the day i have phone battery at 40-50%
A radio is basically a wireless I/O device. GPS, Bluetooth, Baseband, WiFi, FM... - these are different types of radios. They drain power when powered on so if you want battery life you should simply disable the ones that you aren't using at the moment.
@viv_jen: There is no need to autokill every 10 minutes if you don't have unneeded autostart applications. Task managers also drain battery if used too often. It's also a good idea to use the long-press back key feature of CyanogenMod (It kills the currently visible task).
To pitch in my 2 cents worth,
I've found wifi uses quite a bit less than edge/3g data on this particular phone.
This phone has shocking battery life, even for a smartphone.
What you are getting seems about normal for your usage. My battery will be between 20 and 30% after 4 hours of music and 3g browsing. Once I stop doing these things it goes down at about 2% an hour on wifi, about 3% an hour on 2g, and 5% an hour on 3g. I ended up keeping my charge cable on me when I go places and actively use the phone, and "topping up" the battery when I'm sitting at a desk or whatever.
thank you guys for valuable inputs,
could the combination of ROM + kernel also help?
I tried cyanogenmatt + goldenleaf after some of the user suggested that it gives enough battery.
I also heard void gives a good battery.

yep it does
for me atleast
@nogav: WiFi drain depends mostly on Tx (Transmit) power. Mostly we receive information from the internet (Which means Rx is way more important than Tx), so after running a few speed tests (Speedtest.net app) at each option avaliable at the Wifi Tx Power app from market I found out that internet speed at a Tx power of 4dBm is roughtly the same as for 32dBm. Also, our device only supports 801.11b/g mode, so internet speed isn't the best thing about Optimus One (Excluding HDSPA).
@droidevil: The thing that drains most battery is Stagefright. It is able to play 520p mp4 videos almost smoothly, but it is a battery killer. Hardware acceleration also increases performance at the cost of battery, but it is reasonably balanced. Other things that depend on roms: number of preinstalled apps. Deodexed apps load faster, and the less of them there are, the faster the phone boots and runs. If you have about 100-200 programs installed, Autostarts, Advanced Task Killer and Supercharger are likely to be used.
thank you guys for your useful information..
Just raised all urs thanks meter for helping me out..
Well I have installed android assistant set to auto kill on every 10 mins.
Installed gemini and stopped the apps which are set to open on boot.
brightness is the minimum
480-728mhz with InteractiveX
so far 12 hours have passed by and have 50% left
Normal texting, gprs browsing, music no games though.
Lets see how far can I pull it off.

Nonono, don't use autokill, they are just crap, not needed, they drain more battery.
I have installed void forever to see whether it helps in battery performance.
The ROM itself is very fast, just wondering which kernel will best suit the rom to give the desired battery performance.
Any suggestions please..!!!!!
My LG optimus v running iho cm7 only gets about two hours of battery through normal use.

IMHO, actually your battery drain is actually pretty good for a usage like that, I am using more or less the usage of yours and everyday I have to charge.

System tuner: Battery life, cpu tuning, and more.

I have been messing around with system tuner app for a while now and I really like the program.
I would like to hear from people who have used this app and their results with various tweaks that this app provides.
in the boot settings menu:
1. forcing both CPU's online: this should technically give you a better battery life, since it puts less strain on on cpu at a time, has anyone had a good exprience using this?
2. Boost app loading: anyone had any significant improvement with this?
My own settings:
I usually clock my phone at 1.5 (on demand governor) even though faux's kernel allows 1.7 max. I put max clock for screen off at 384 and conservative governor.
I have Undervolted before but do not see a very significant battery difference so I just left it alone.
I tried out the autokill option of system tuner, I only tried to kill the ghost apps, to refrain from the cpu from having to keep restarting the phone, but this also seems to kill battery life...In my experience any type of task killer however detailed will reduce battery and does not increase performance, unless you're running a poorly written app that just needs to be killed.
I use three other programs to monitor my phone
1. system pannel: very good at finding rogue apps that kill cpu...I highly recommend the pro version, you can get a history of what has used cpu up to a week.
2. Onavo and My data manger which basically monitor my wifi and mobile traffic, Onavo only monitors mobile network traffic and lets you restrict apps to only wifi. however it does not measure wifi use of data. My data manager monitor both wifi and network usage but does not give you any options to do anything with the apps, it basically tells you what program is using data while on wifi and mobile.
If anyone has found a good balance between performance and battery saving, please do share.
Thank you.
I read some other guy also mentioned the all cpus on thing. im not sure but isnt it the same as making both processors work at the same time which leads to phone overheating? I will give it a try though. from what you noticed, do you like it more with both cpu on or is better the way it was?

technically this is how it's supposed to work pic attatched, but I don't know if our roms or even the dual core rom that's out works in this manner, if it did we would be seeing significant battery savings

will see then. hey seansk do you notice some kind of hesitation when trying to unlock the phone? when u press the unlock button at the top. I think that boost app loading thing causes this cuz when have it enabled the unlock button you have to press it twice to work, while when disabling that boost app loading thing all works fine...

I have widget locker and havn't had that problem...I just flashed faux's latest kernel and am in the process of re calibrating my battery, it seemed to jump from 100 to 90 in about 10 minutes!!!!!! now I noticed that happening...but I havn't had time to fully replicate it...i need more time..I believe it might have something to do with fauxes kernel, he mentioned that when screen goes off he it puts the phone into a low power consumption mode, but also has something that when you turn it on, is quick to turn on!!! we'll have to wait and see.
If you've been following this thread, just wanted make a quick update...I want to give you my results with system tuner tweaking. Forcing both cores online is a bad idea. It will literally kill your battery in a matter of a couple of hours. ICS will hopefully be different and utilize the cores how they should be, saving some battery and giving the amaze longer battery life!
On the other hand reducing reducing clock frequency on screen off will help in battery life (obviously).

yes still stock rooted, I put the governor on conservative and put the frequency to 384 or around there, while screen is off.
What helps most I found out is turning off all the radios like wifi and network data, (basically putting phone on airplane mode). Instead of dropping down 15 percent in 6 hours it drops like 3 when I turn airplane on. But like I've said before it's unrealistic I'm always recieving google talk, google voice, facebook updates and I have to have both of these on which unfortunately eats a lot of battery.
I keep switching back and forth between faux's kernel and stock and I'm actually finding stock gives me better battery life for some reason. Even though I set the clock speeds on both at 1.5 ghz.

Battery Life
Major battery drain is the screen, when on eats up all the juice, dimming helps a bit
charge source: usb vs AC charge
usb charging takes quite a while, AC charge quicker (~ an hour)
Also, from my observation, usb charged battery runs out quicker than AC charge
Data Connection, Juice defender helps a lot
turn off sync you don't need, like HTC sense

well the problem is its not my screen. It's when the phone is idle, I usually lose about 15 to 20 percent over night. if I turn off the radios it drops down to about 3 to 4 percent overnight....like I said before I can't turn off the radios...I constantly use google voice, google talk, facebook. And they require both a cell connection and a data connection. I hate to pay for more apps...I've already paid for a bunch of apps to control and see my phone's usage of cpu and battery...is the app really worth it? wish they had a lite version

I have juicedefender ultimate, used it for a while actually...the only good use of it is turns off radios all other things when screen is off..all other things are negligible to battery life...I currently don't use it anymore. I tried multiple things/tweaks with it for about two weeks,...NO point lol...I want to be able to get my google talk message and my google voice texts, it annoyed the hell out of me when someone had sent something like 2 hours before and I would just get it when I woke my phone!!! I tried all kinds of things...but the only thing that actually worked was turning off radios during screen off which I don't want...I can't win lol....I can't have my cake and eat it too!!

For what it is worth I am running BulletProof 2.3.1 and last night I took phone off charger at 10:00 PM, alarm goes off at 3:30 snoozing every 15 min until 4:15...Battery was at 100% still. It is now 7:00 AM and battery is at 96%.
This was after flashing back to BP around 8:00 PM.
I've noticed the same type of activity when in Airplane mode. Extremely low power consumption - fantastic.
Is it possible maybe to undervolt the Wifi/BT/Mobile radios? Would that make any difference or am I off base here?

You had something setup wrong then I think.. you can change how often in syncs while the screen is off, the default setting is for it to turn on data for 1 minute every 15 minutes. Most people don't need to know things so bad that they can't work with a 14 minute delay(at worst), and of couse the internet is on while screen is on, when you're actually using it.
I thought I would need to use juice defender, but since I switched to bulletproof, my usage last me an entire day. From 8am till 1am, usually with some to spare. The only tweak I made to cpu was to enable 192mhz, it isn't like there is a performance drop, but it did make a notable difference in battery life.
If I wanted to I could use juice defender to get more than one day out of it, and I keep a spare battery on me in case I really need to use the phone.. but haven't really needed it.

Battery Life Tips?

I was wondering if any of you people could be kind enough to give me some more battery tips for my new SGS3.
I'm getting around 4-5% / hour battery drain on standby. I have 2 GMail accounts on sync.
Here's what I've done:
-> Removed Kik Messenger because it was commandeering an outrageous amount of Wakelock Time (about 5-11% of Wakelock Time in 4-7 hours).
-> Installed Omega v5.0 (latest).
-> Still on Stock Kernel
-> Changed my WiFi Policy to "Only when Plugged in"
Turn off automatic synchronizatikn for fcbk email or other accounts.

What does Facebook sync anyway? I always thought it was just once to get the contact pictures. I will disable it now
I've been using Foxhound and Siyah kernel, super combo. I can honestly say it's the best performance/battery life on any android device I've used, 6+ hours of screen on consistently - wifi/gps on, 3gmails autosyncing, autobrightness, 1hr>calls, 50+texts, light browsing, redditt, Google Music... Battery life is so subjective though depending on your apps, usage, cell signal, etc.
Experiment! All things being equal, in my experience its the kernels that make the biggest difference in significant battery life improvements, with the exception of stock roms vs. AOSP/AOKP, battery life doesn't differ very much minus bloatware in the various roms. And if you're a flashaholic like me you'll actually have to wait a few charge cycles to get an accurate representation of battery performance for your phone.

Thanks for the big post! ^v^. I am going to flash the SiyahKernel. But after turning Facebook Sync and the Wifi Policy (which I found out about today).
My battery is at 93% at 2h 01m 05s (also my battery goes down to 99% as soon as I take it off the charger). So thats 6% in 2 hours which is 3% / hour ! Getting there ^^
Apparently going to 99% immediatelly after the charger is normal for Samsung devices. So I wouldn't count that as reduction.
I dont use aftermarket kernels and roms, I have disabled a few stock programs I do not use and get a very decent battery with the 2x battery saver. I had already ordered a secondary battery which is on its way actually as well, so ill be covered from there on

I don't think there are any OC/UV guides in the SGS3 forums but you could search XDA to acquaint yourself, there many writeups on the subject. Make sure have ADB and are familiar with it before so you can recover if necessary from any mishaps. Every processor has a different tolerance to OC/UV so there isn't a tried and true method of implementing it you just have to use trial and error.
I won't get in to it too much but undervolting and underclocking are related but different. Undervolting effectively ask the processor to run with less power from the battery at a specific clock speed or frequency. Underclocking would be reducing the overall frequency of the processor depending on the load. They can be used independently or together.

Underclocking would be reducing the overall frequency of the processor depending on the load. They can be used independently or together.

Ah thanks a-lot. Would creating a profile to limit the CPU to 300 MHz MAX during screen off save battery also?
I have SetCPU installed and have flashed to SiyahKernel now but haven't fiddled with it yet.

Download extweaks from the market instead to configure Siyah. Extweaks hasn't been optimized for the SGS3 yet but it works better than SetCPU with Siyah, it also has descriptions of what each setting does.
If you aren't a gamer you could even toggle two of the cores off, definitely will increase your battery without much if any performance hit in real usage.

This is a normal 3G battery time with CM11 by ggow?

I've got 1 day and 10 hours standby battery life from 100% to 0%.
There was no use of the tablet and only standby time.
and I turned on Mobile data and Bluetooth and turned off WiFi which means full time 3G(HSPA) standby with bluetooth.
I use HDX 8.9 3rd gen LTE(apollo) with CM11 by ggow on the Sidestrap 4.0.1.
there was almost no 'awake' and there was never 'screen on'.
I wonder this battery time is normal or not.

While I have no experience with HDX mobile data (my devices are WiFi only) I will comment my phone (Moto X variant) with a battery 35% the capacity of an HDX 8.9" can hold out for 48+ hours under the same scenario. No radios, only mobile data, no screen activity (left in drawer). Obviously a lot depends on connectivity type (2G/3G/LTE), distance from tower and the ability for the device to fall into and remain in 'deep sleep'. Google services are notorious for waking idle devices; you have to pretty aggressive to quite the framework while not impacting functionality.
Based on the above caveats and my experience with several HD and HDX 7 devices runing FireOS, CM11 and Nexus (can easily last a week or more in standby) I'd say the mobile radio is certainly taking a toll on battery life. There are several Xposed modules that attempt to manage radio configuration on-the-fly to moderate power draw. Might want to try one of those.

I think it's not normal.
Although the mobile radio takes some more power than WiFi, It doens't make sense that a 6000mAh battery device lasts only 34 hours standby time.
I think I should find out what is the problem.

Gsam and wakelock detector (or similar tools) are your friend for detection, Greenify and Amplify (if used judiciously) for remediation. Of course there are more powerful tools for advanced tweaking ...

Normally, 'wake lock' makes battery drain but there's no awake on my battery log from android setting menu.
I can see the cpu gorverner is 'performance' which sets cpu clock highest and it can't be changed.
Maybe that's the reason of battery drain I think.
but one thing I feel weird is, if cpu clock is set highest and it can't be changed, the device should be warm or hot. but I can't feel any heat from my HDX 8.9. but the battery still drains.

The native battery log is not comprehensive, particularly in the area of awake time (based on what?). Use a more robust tool (I suggested a couple). Also take a peek a Process Stats under developer options (KitKat and above). This can sometimes expose CPU/RAM hogs (and indirectly wakelocks).
Try CPU-Z to monitor individual processor speeds (on the SOC tab). Many tools report only the highest level. There are various apps that attempt to set cpu min/max. I would stay away from those as most roms and the device itself do a fine job responding to dynamic loads.
If 1-2 CPUs are elevated and the rest idle there won't be a lot of excess heat.

I've checked the core status with CPU-Z, the 1-2 cores are only elevated to highest clock and the rest cores(3-4) are stopped, as you mentioned. Maybe that's why there was no excess heat.
Anyway, I've installed Gsam battery and WLD. but the WLD gives me only meaning less results(there was no excessive wake lock or so. Kernal wake lock time is almost same as the time of my using the tablet.).
But Gsam gives me that the problem is "Radio". GSam says 66% of battery drain is caused by Radio during last 24 hours, even though I used tablet 3 hours with screen on.
I think the battery is leaking from 3G radio.
The next test will be the Airplain mode with WiFi and Bluetooth on.

Greenify, Forcedoze?

Has any one tried using Greenify or Forcedoze on the S9?
Does it make any difference?
I did briefly on the S8+ but found it made no difference and if anything made it slightly worse. Modern versions of Android do all this stuff pretty good (though not as good as iOS, got some catching up to do on that) and additional apps, to me, is just placebo.
Just my experience, of course.

They actually conflict with the Doze and other optimizations of the latest Android OS. So these apps are kind of redundant I would say.
Just put all your apps to auto sleep mode via the device maintenance setting under the power option. Will really help with battery life and device overall speed.
I do use package disabler. And im able to get 6 to u hour sot everytime without force doze or greenify. Package disable hasnt help much on battery itself. But i has help alot in smoothness and standbye which doesnt drain close to any battery when screen is off.
