You need to downgrade to 4.4.2 for root.

I don't need to. I just unlocked ? the bootloader and flashed the system with a CM Based recovery. After that I installed Chainfires SuperSu via SD card. Works for me, Android 4.4.4

Yea sorry flashed the device by accident while I installed the CM Recovery. Had to install everything again but now it works.

It was just a poor question.
If you do not want to unlock your bootloader, you need to flash 4.4.2 rom
If you do want to unlock your bootloader, you need to flash a new kernel.
Either way there is flashing involved. It just depends on what you meant by your original question.

Just thought that flashing the device is not needed. But I was wrong. Unlocking the bootloader was no problem.

Did you backup your ta partition first before unlocking bootloader so you dont lose your drm keys and warranty etc?

[Q] about how ppl root their xperia devices

hi all
new from samsung to sony.
just curious, is it the only way you guys used to root or re-root xperia devices after updates with vroot, tools from DooMLoRD etc? i mean except those mentioned, nobody use other alternatives to root xperia devices (in general, not z tablet only)?
and thus if these tools are not compatible with new firmwares then u r not able to root your device in case the previous root was removed?

You can open the bootloader and then you will always be able to root (flash custom recovery, root, flash stock kernel).

Then I guess you can only root with the exploits and need to be careful about upgrades.
Is it possible to downgrade with Flashtool on locked BL? I think it is (but it's confusing). If it is then you need to keep FTF of the current version in case you upgrade to a new version that can not be rooted.

Before you do anything backup the "TA" partition or you will lose the Sony DRM keys. For more info Google "Sony DRM backup TA".
Then follow the instructions here

[Q] Root and recovery

Just bought a Z on stock 4.2.2
Model SGP311
Build: 10.31.C.0.136
I'd like to install a custom recovery and root it also.
Which is better for the Z, CWM or TWRP?
Is there a thread that has a guide on rooting & recovery?
Also should I bother updating to official 4.3?
Anyone can help out? Not sure if I want to perform the OTA update before rooting and saving a backup just in case.

Check out Nut's threads on DualRecovery. You can have both recovery ... Vol UP for CWM and Vol DOWN for TWRP

Do I need to update to latest FW to unlock the bootloader in order to root?
I remember having to do that for my TF300T in the past.

Nope. Depends on what you want to flash to your tablet. My bootloader is unlockable but I didn't unlock it, didn't have the need to. You can flash any Sony firmware and get root with them without unlocking your bootloader. If you will keep running the stock Sony ROM but only want to root and recovery then you don't need to unlock your bootloader. Only unlock your bootloader in order to flash a custom ROM, basically to flash a different kernel...and don't forget to backup your TA if you unlock your bootloader or bye bye Bravia Engine.
I had the TF101 and the TF300T also ... I find this one way easier to molest. hehehee ... The Xperia tablet Z is a very nice upgrade from the TF300T

Ok, for now root and recovery is all I want. So no need to unlock bootloader, yet. I had to do it on the TF300 for the custom ROM, you're right.
TA is a partition right? Haven't heard about it before.
Can it be backed up via recovery?

Best method to backup your TA partition is too use this tool (need to have root on your tab first) :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292598
If you don't want to unlock bootloader you don't have to care about TA.
Please note that with xperia device you can relock bootloader once unlocked if you have made a backup of the TA partition ( not the case with asus TF300)

Forgot to ask, if I update via OTA to 4.3, will I lose the root?
Also do you guys have a link for step-by-step root/recovery guide?
Hmm acording to this thread you need to be unlocked to install CWM. can it be done without?

I don't believe OTA will work if you are rooted. Even if you get the notification, the update wont go through. What you need to do is downgrade to 4.2.2 or 4.1.2 and root with DoomLord's 1 click root, then you install DualRecovery from Nut's thread and flash the zip of the latest firmware for your tablet model, Power off without rebooting and flash a stripped FTF of that build. Reboot and you will have the latest firmware rooted and DualRecovery already installed. I don't know which tablet model you have but the threads with explanation are there.
This is one of them: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588442
* You don't need to unlock your BL to install either CWM or TWRP

Ota will not work, if you're still on 10.31.C.0.136 and you want last 4.3 rom with root on locked bootloader you have to do this :
1) Root 10.31.C.0.136 with this tool (vroot) : http://www.mgyun.com/en/GetVRoot
2) Then Install @[NUT] dual recovery : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261606, you need to dl this file from his repository : http://nut.xperia-files.com/downloa...scmVjb3ZlcnkyLjcuOTQtQkVUQS5pbnN0YWxsZXIuemlw
You will now have a rooted rom with custom recovery
3) Make a nandroid backup
4) Next to upgrade to last 4.3 rom (10.4.1.B.0.109),first read this thread for the 'how to' :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588442 but you have to use the files from this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2671276
Need some reading to understand the process but this is the only way atm
Thanks.
I have the dualrecovery installed and did a backup also.
I believe it is also rooted (there wan an option to root after installing the dualrecovery mod)
Is there any major beneficial reason to go from 4.2.2 to 4.3?

You will likely be waiting some time, because it's possible to downgrade and flash pre-rooted zip or to OTA certain FW's maintaining root, I don't see devs putting a lot of effort into finding an exploit. That said best hope is probably an exploit being found for Z3 which is transferable to Z2, but as I say you may be waiting some time.

Try to create a rooted update package from the update ftf: [4.4.4] Create ROOTED update package from stock FTF [LOCKED BOOTLOADER]
So I need to flash dual recovery to do that
How can I make a full stock backup just in case I need to use it for warranty?

You don't need, you can flash back an original ftf anytime or repair with Sony PC Companion. We are talking locked bootloadr, so until you don't unlock it, you have warranty.
But if you already have root on prev. firmware, you should install DualRecovery and boot into TWRP and you can backup your system there.

Yes, if you have older firmware on the phone, you can try the root options available and you can use recovery without unlocking th bootloader. If you have the latest, than you can possibly flash an older firmware to your phone and root that. But you need to read a bit, to understand everything correctly.
I have successfully rooted my Z2 on 4.4.4 locked bootloader

backup ta partition without root

hi guys im new to rooting and xda
is it possible to backup the ta partition ( DRM keys ) without unlocking the boot-loader
because i don't wanna lose my drm keys

i tried using ta backup but it needs root access
to root i need unlocked boot-loader
if i unlock the bootloader ill lose my warranty

hwlp me out fellas............
Downgrade your firmware to lollipop and root it without unlocking bootloader (because it is possible on lollipop). Then do a backup and after you backed it up flash marshmallow firmware back and unlock it and root again.
