[Q] Turn your phone into a dual sim phone? - Samsung Gear S

When you use a gear s does it effectively turn your phone into a dual sim phone?
What I want to do is buy a voice/text sim from one carrier and a data sim from another carrier. (each carrier is cheapest at one feature)
If I put the DATA sim in the watch, will my phone piggy-back that data?
If I put the VOICE/TEXT sim in the phone, will my watch ring and display texts?
And most importantly will both happen at the same time?
Essentially, will the watch turn my single sim phone into a dual sim phone?
EDIT** also considering the opposite.
The data sim in the phone and the voice/text sim in the watch.
For that situation, can I text from my phone using the watch number? Calls from the phone use the watch number?
Watch use the Phone's data plan?
This section option is only if I must... it seems a bit backwards logistically.
I basically want the watch to be a bluetooth data hotspot that also functions as a voice/texting smartwatch.

If I put the DATA sim in the watch, will my phone piggy-back that data? no, why would you? The watch is 4g only (very slow)
If I put the VOICE/TEXT sim in the phone, will my watch ring and display texts? yes only when its BT to the phone
Other ways?
If I put the DATA sim in the phone, will my watch piggy-back that data? maybe but not likely. I don't even think the data will work without phone service?
If I put the VOICE/TEXT sim in the watch, will my phone ring and display texts? nope
I have tried to take the sim out of my watch and put it in my iPad and that doesn't even work. The iPad would have to be provisioned to use the service.

Hello and thanks for your response.
Maybe I can phrase this better. I'll phrase it a few different ways below.
I have 1 Sim. - Unlimited calling. Pay through your nose for data.
I have a 2nd Sim - Near Unlimited Data. Pay through your nose for calling.
Both have been provisioned numbers but for my purposes. one will ONLY be used for data. The other will ONLY be used for voice/text.
Where I'm lost is why doesn't your gear s sim work in your Ipad? I thought the Gear S uses a regular sim? My Data sim works in an Ipad... an Iphone... Android... Windows Phone. Etc. Are you suggesting it wouldn't work in the gear S?
Any 3G is better than no G.
If I put my voice/text sim in my phone and don't have a second slot for data... I'd be pretty happy if my watch could share 3G.
The 3rd point I quoted above, where you said nope, is the reason I'd put the data sim in the watch.
I'd want the BT connection active at all times and the phone siphon data from that watch's sim.
To paraphrase, heres the proposed problem.
I have sim 1 for calling and texting.
I have sim 2 for data.
Is there a situation where I can have one in each device (I don't care which goes in which) and the end result is calling/texting/data on both devices.
(using sim 1 exclusively for calling and sim 2 exclusively for data.)

You need voice, SMS and data on both SIM cards in order to operate fully. You can't share with each other. Alternatively, you can have just one SIM (on the phone) and let watch just be a BT tethered all the time (without ever use the cell radio on the watch).

Gotcha. Shame they didn't implement this to work as a dual sim solution where both devices complement each other.
I'll just have to buy a dual sim phone instead of a watch I guess. Maybe a Moto G.
Thanks for your help!

[Q] Forward calls from tablet to handset

I have a 3g tablet that I'm using as my primary device. However, I'd like to make/receive calls using a smaller device that fits in my pocket. I could buy a bluetooth handset for around $50, but I'd rather use a spare android phone I have if possible.
I did some research, looks like there's no way to use the phone as a bluetooth headset. But...couldn't I use it via wifi? I'm thinking...enable the wifi hotspot on the tablet, so the phone connects to the tablet via wifi. Tablet receives a call. Somehow it magically forwards it via voip to the android phone. Ideally I could also make a call via the phone, though that's not necessary.
No, google voice won't work, as it's an Australian number.
And I do know about Tablet Talk. I need something for voice calls though, not texts.
It'll probably be suggested that I simply put the sim in the phone and use the hotspot featue on it to share with the tablet. Good idea, but the battery life on the phone is less than stellar. It might last an hour or two in that mode; the tablet can last all day.
Thanks for any help!
Why can't you put another SIM card in your phone and enable call forwarding from the SIM that you use in your tablet to that in your phone? But first check whther there is any call forwarding charges impossed by your carrier.

Yup, it costs to forward calls. I could just give two numbers out, but that'd be a hassle for those calling me.

Hmm.. I see .. .. I am not sure whether there is an app which forwards voice call via VIOP.. another suggestion is put your primary SIM card (the one in tab now) in your phone and get a spare SIM card for your tab for data connection..
Cos SMS'es are not forwarded, and that is a not trully-carrier free solution.

I've thought of that too. What I'm aiming for is to have one primary device. I don't want to need to carry a tablet and a phone. So...tablet is primary, it handles all data and voice. Phone would serve same purpose as a bluetooth headset; if it's there, it could handle voice calls. If not, then calls still go through the tablet as usual.
I know the hardware is more than capable of doing this.
I may just end up getting one of those bluetooth headsets that act like a regular phone. Would (should?) double as a bluetooth audio receiver. Just hate spending more money when I already have something (spare android phone) that should do the job.

pairing via bluetooth with no sim

wondering what difference is running the watch via Bluetooth and running it sim card , aside of course the fact that you don't need to have your phone within proximity.
also wondering how this would work with a sim card when you leave your phone at home , does the sim have the same phone number as your current cell number ? kinda weird almost like a cloned sim card no ?

I was kinda wondering about how that works myself. I wouldn't want another line or number for my watch, but an extension of my phone. One number, 2 devices, is that possible?

I'd like to know this also. I'd imagine it'll belike the PS Vita. Use a simcard for 3G Data only.

It depends on your carrier if it allows, 1 number on2 devices is quite possible.
Sent from Galaxy Note 3 (The beauty & beast)
Id also like to know how this works too. I would love it to use the same number as my phone. :victory:
It is called Multi-SIM.
You get 1 MSISDN (tel no) but multiple IMSI (the registration number on the SIM card). Some internal routing makes it possible to receive calls and SMS on 1 SIM, but you can make calls and SMS on all SIMs.
At least that's how it works here in Malaysia.
The telco Maxis allows up to 6 IMSIs per MSISDN, 1 primary and 5 subs.

Although in Malaysia they may have multi sim carriers I work for bell mobility and I'm pretty confident in saying that in Canada and the usa none are multi sim carriers.
Here is how I think it will work, you get a new number on a standalone $10 plan or either on a $10 share plan with your phone line. Once the watch is disconnected from Bluetooth on the phone the phone will forward calls to the number on the watch.
Just a theory though won't know much until we get it

will it also forward emails and messeges?
I would think you would just set the email up on the gear s and the texts would be forwarded the same way calls are

Thx. Im hoping exchange Emails work.
I am wondering as well as I have Sprint with UCCI cards and not SIM card so how does this work when it's tied to a SIM card. Basically they would treat the gear S as a Tablet only plan. so instead of the 10$ for the tablet plan it's the gear S. And what happens when you go over your data minutes I'm unlimited on my Note 4 but it say's the gear S will come with 500mb a month I'm confused

[Q] Share your mobile sim number with sim on Gear S?

Can't really find a straight answer on this. Has anyone been able to setup their Gear S sim to have the same number as their mobile sim?
I guess this could be a different story for each carrier...
It usually has to be paired with you mobile device to share your mobile devices number.

On AT&T if you are paired via BT it will show as your primary phone's number. If you are connected remotely and make a phone call, of course the Gear S is going to use and display it's phone number. However, I've been texting people from my Gear S while my phone is at home and it shows as my Primary Phone number as the source for the text.
Overall, I'll say that in the past 3-4 weeks it hasn't made a bit of a difference as no one has questioned anything or gotten confused. Working as I expected and hoped. In the case of a different phone number showing up, people have recognized it as me without worry. My Gear S has the same area code and prefix which I think helps.

Sorry, realised I wasn't clear enough. So what I want to do is have a sim in the Gear s that shares the same number as the sim in my mobile. So if I wanted to leave my phone home, I could.
Don't want to pay for a separate mobile plan for the Gear S, but don't want to switch my mobile number to the watch either.

I don't think this is possible in the U.S. I'm on T-Mobile and my SIM that came with T-Mobile Wearable Plan has its own number.
Here is how it normally works:
1) When Gear S and the Samsung phone are connected using Bluetooth, all calls are placed and received using the PHONE. The watch simply acts as a Bluetooth headset
2) When Phone and Watch are not connected, you can configure the gear manager to forward calls to your watch. It works similar to forwarding your calls to another phone or voice mail. So, after a couple of rings, your Gear S would ring and you could pick up the call on it.
All in all it works pretty well. Also, in Europe, I think you can have two SIM cards associated with the same number but not in the U.S.
I think that would be considered Sim cloning. An illegal process in US... even if you are the #'s user.
Remember, we NEVER own our phone number. It's basically leased to us, and have sole use of it...as long as we pay for it.
With that said, I do remember reading an article about a year back, of a patent filed for a virtual SIM that would be for this purpose.
The OP is talking about multi-sim . Multi-sim is a service offered by many providers around the world. It gives you multiple identical sims with the same number and you can seamlessly share minutes and data. The watch even has a toggle for multi-sim setting. That would be the ideal seamless way to use this watch as your outgoing number from the watch is the same as the phone.
Here's an example: http://www.du.ae/mobile/mobileplans/multi-sim
I ordered a nano sim adapter for my Galaxy S5, and plan on asking att to issue me a nano sim.
Then I can pop it out of the phone and into the watch and go.
Btw, The watch will still call ems even without a sim. Score for me, I am an early am runner and there is only 1 number that can help me.
No monthly plan needed.

I live in the Netherlands and just ordered a DualSIM which should make it possible for me to use both my S4A and GearS with the same phone and Sim number.
One of the Sims will be nano to fit the watch.
Can't wait for testing!
That's awesome, I wish the US would allow Dual sim cards.

My carrier in Thailand allows me 2 sims, same number. However, not so with carrier in Afghanistan where I work, so depends on the carrier. I presently have Thai sim in gear s, and AFG in phone. Works OK with calls being registered against AFG sim in phone, roaming and data off on gear s.
Hope this helps.

Same for the UK.
Apparently some of the networks used to offer it years ago but primarily as a business service.
I've heard that Samsung have approached networks in markets such as the US and the UK about possibly introducing such a service but I doubt we'll see such a change.

Buying a Gear S, have a couple questions.

I have to have 2 sim cards active all the time, one is an international sim that roams on AT&T network (2G) I use only for phone calls & SMS's, DATA disabled all the time (too much $$ otherwise). The other sim card is a metro pcs unlimited everything. I currently have the ASUS zenfone 2 that I like, except the screen is broken, touch still works though, but now want to try the Gear S + a single sim phone (might buy a refurb. Tmobile Note 4, or a Nexus 6P..etc.)
- Say I have the international sim card in an unlocked AT&T gear S, and when I receive a call; answer it in my phone that's connected to the Gear S through Bluetooth? Or do I need to answer it through the built in speaker or a Bluetooth headphone connected to the Gear S?
- Is there an app like pushbullet that will push notifications (SMS's, missed calles..etc) to my other devices?
Thanks!
1. No, phone calls to the watch needs to be answered on the watch. You can have a BT headset connected to the watch to answer it but phone's can be used this way.
2. Notifications only go one way: from phone to watch. I'm not aware there is any app to the other way.
Also, keep in mind that the Gear S can only work within North America. If you use it outside that region, it is physically not possible to pick up any signal because its dual-band radio.

I thought it'd be able to route the call somehow heh.
I have pushbullet app, it sends whatever in the notification area to all other devices that run the same app using WiFi or DATA ..etc. I'm guessing no such a thing under Tizen that is reliable and works 100% of the time?
Thanks for the heads up regarding supported frequencies.

T-Mobile Tablet SIM in second SIM Slot?

Has anyone tried using a T-Mobile SIM in a smartphone as either a strictly data only device or in a device with two SIM trays for supplementary data? I am very interested in doing this with the 5x if it is possible. Thanks in advance.
There is a selection for which sim you want to use for Mobile Data in the SIM Management however since the device is a Dual Sim Passive device you will have to manually change to the Data only SIM once you run out of data on your primary phone SIM.

Perhaps I did not phrase my original question properly, I am wondering whether or not I can use the T-Mobile tablet specific sim in a phone. I know that I can use two sims and switch between them however, I do not know if T-Mobile will allow me to use a tablet sim in a phone.

Yes. I have done so.
Yes per T-Mobile support. I asked them directly when I tried to do this. And what crpalmer said.
I went ahead and got a tablet sim, 2gb for $20. I can confirm that it is working in the 5x. Thank you all for the help.
Difference between tablet and phone plan
What is the technical difference between the tablet and phone plans? I have a tablet Sim in my second slot and I am able to receive and send text messages. When I go on the website it lists my plan as having unlimited text and calls. Could I use this as my primary phone plan?
