[Q] Am I rooted or not? - AT&T HTC One (M8)

Okay recently I went through the steps listed in the article below to root my HTC One M8
http://androidcentral.us/2014/04/root-att-htc-one-m8/
Well it all went according to plan. So to test out my new rooted status I went and downloaded Xposed Framework and Unicon. After consistently trying to install/update the framework in Xposed (i never received an error. It would reboot just fine) I noticed that the update never applied. Though I never received an error, upon rebooting the update to Xposed was never applied. Just to check I downloaded an app to check my root status and well, I was not rooted somehow. I rebooted to TWRP quiet easily and installed the SuperSU zip which was located on my internal storage. (not sure if it had to be on an SD card, I don't have one.) It was flashed okay and I rebooted. I went back to check my root status and the root checker said I was officially rooted now. I downloaded another root checker just to be sure and it confirmed I was indeed rooted.
However, this is where the issue came in. Xposed now says I'm not rooted. Everytime I try to install the update, instead of rebooting it gives me an error that says "Failed to get root status." I had never received this error, even when root checkers said I wasn't rooted. Here is the thing, I'm not sure what I did wrong? Can someone point out a problem here? Something had to go wrong along the way but I'm really confused. Am I rooted or not? Root checker apps say I'm rooted, but Xposed says I'm not. How do I fix this problem?

There is an app in the app store called root checker its free check there first

Yeah I downloaded that. I covered that in my post. I downloaded the app and it said I'm rooted. However, Xposed says I'm not rooted. Essentially, I'm getting mixed results. The root checker says one thing and Xposed says another

After you flashed superuser update in recovery did you go to Play Store and dl SuperSU app and then open it

Apologies, was walking in a store when I saw this and quickly replied without reading everything. Glad you got it figured out.

[Q] No app root access after HTC unlock.

So I did the HTC unlock after receiving my Asurion claim (1.19 Hboot) a couple months ago. I haven't messed around with it much because I've been busy irl. I installed TWRP, Fresh, and just recently the "deSensed ICS ~ Dialer, Tumblers & Apps! -Updated Mean4.4 & Goodies2.11!" theme. Now I've been thinking I'd really like to just flash CM10 now that it's starting to mature so I installed TB and it wasn't able to gain root access (tried a couple different SU apps). I checked several other apps and none were able to gain root (ES file explorer, Quick Boot, Root Explorer, etc). I originally thought that the issue was the fact I flashed Fresh over the stock rom after just wiping Cache but I just wiped everything (Cache, Dalvik, System, Factory Reset, in that order), flashed a newly downloaded Fresh rom, and downloaded TB and got the same "Root Access: Failed" error. I'm at a loss. I'm running Fresh, I have TWRP installed, but I have no root access. Any help would be appreciated.

try root checker basic from the playstore to confirm you are rooted but it doesn't make sense the you can have twrp and flash fresh without root
Sounds like your Su binaries may have got messed up. Try using only one Su and see if that works. You may need to flag Su in twrp

That's what I'm saying, it doesn't make sense.Root Checker gave me "Sorry! This device does not have proper root access"

I had the SU that comes in Fresh installed and it wasn't working so last night I installed a different one from the market, that didn't work either, uninstalled. I tried updating binaries on one (couldn't find the option to do it on the other) and that worked fine but it failed to gain root.
Just now I fixed Permissions via TWRP, deleted the SU that comes with Fresh via TWRP, uninstalled and reinstalled the other SU with the same results.
Try going into su and check grant permissions automatically and make sure fastboot is unchecked.....see if that helps

HUH?
I tried re-locking and doing the HTC unlock again. I restored my Fresh nandroid and I have the same results. I'll try re-locking and unlocking again when I get a chance and this time I'll see if SU works before restoring.
I have same issues. Adaway and wifi tether both say I have no root. Running meanRom 4.6 with s-on. Will be watching thread for hopeful fix.

I actually unlocked my phone last night 10-17-12 using htcdev (still S-on)... Everything was and still is stock and TB, Adfree and tether tells me I'm not rooted... Was wondering the same thing.

Can I have a link to a flashable one, the one from market isn't cutting it?
Hit it twice and make it count.
Unlocked does not give you root. It enables you to install a Rom with root access or install superuser. If you are unlocked and have installed a custom Rom with root support, you should already have superuser in the app drawer. Update whatever superuser app you have to the newest, and reboot.

Lost Root access

I used odin to root and went two weeks with just a stock rooted phone. i downloaded team venum jellybean and used CWM to install. at the end of the installation when i went back to reboot i got a "may have lost root" would you like to fix, after doing this and the rom loaded i had lost all root permissions...Anybody know where this noob went wrong? You can be brutal in your repsonse my fellow internet travels, any help would be thankful.
Did you double check if you still have root access? You can check by installing root checker from the play store. If you do still have root access make sure you still have super su installed. If not install that from the play store as well. Worst case scenario of you don't have root access. Just root again.

The stock phone app asking for supersu permissions?

I have the 4.3 stock HTC Sense on my phone. The stock phone app it came with keeps asking for supersu permissions every day. I grant it without having it ask me again, but I was just curious as to why it needs permissions in the first place.

This happens to me as well. I'm curious as well.

it just happend to me just now. anyone know why?
Anyone get an answer to this? Just happened to me. I think it might be to do with SuperSU updating though as I just had to update it after catching this message.
First of which app you trying to run, second was it a new device or used that you got. If used check the bootloader if it locked/unlocked/relocked.
Some apps require SU pemissions in order to run. If your device is rooted I would suggest to update to the latest SU all available on the xda forums v.1.89

This only atarted recently. Just happened again. SuperSU blocks it by default if I don't do anything. But I don't know if to allow it. It is now in SuperSU list as 'Phone'. I was using the phone earlier today and it did not ask for permissions. Android 4.3 Trickdroid last build. SuperSU is up to date.
I've been getting this as well. My old HTC One did not do this. But the speaker blew out. After getting a replacement and rooting (and unlocking, S-Off), this started happening on the Stock AT&T ROM for 4.3. I never ran the stock ROM on my original so I wasn't sure if it was normal or not.

Why is SuperSU even on a stock non root phone? If it has SuperSU on it, then that would tell me the phone the OP has that he thinks is stock is not stock. I don't consider a rooted phone to be stock, and that is most likely what the OP has.
I am rooted and s-off. It has not asked again for a while and is not listed in SuperSU anymore. But the log shows 'Phone' made 3 attempts.
This happened to me last night around 8:00. I unlocked the phone, and the SuperSU request was already showing when I unlocked, counting down from 7. I let it time out, but I didn't find it a little nerve-racking. I checked the SuperSU log, and it tried the night before around the same time, as well.

[Q] can you keep root when updating from 4.2.2 to 4.3?

id like to update to 4.3, but as far as I know, only a few people have had success keeping root, without having to re root. Is it at all possible, such as if I used superSU pro survival mode, or something else? I don't have access to a computer to re root, and want know if anyone has had success with keeping root. I don't wanna risk doing something stupid and bricking the phone lol. Thanks.

You will lose ROOT when updating a OTA update but i will explain a way to keep it.
1. Open the Google Play Store (or Android Market) and search for ‘Superuser’ (link to Superuser here). Be sure you have the latest version installed. Update or install if necessary.
2.Open Superuser (not SuperSU if you also have that installed). Click on info in the top left corner. Swiping to the right will also go to the info tab. If on a tablet click the “i” icon on the top of the screen on the right.
3.Verify that you have ‘superuser v3.1′ or higher installed.
4. Click on ‘su binary’ (not the ‘outdated binary notification’ checkbox).
5. Click on ‘Update’. Click ‘Grant’ and ‘Allow’ on boxes that pop up. Keep clicking on ‘Update’ and ‘That was cool, do it again’ until the update process runs through without any errors. Turning your device off and back on may resolve any issues you hit.
6.Press the back button to get back to the info screen. Check the ‘ota survival’ box.
7. Install the OTA update for your device. When the update is complete open the Superuser app again. If it is no longer installed reinstall it from the Google Play Store. Go to the info tab once again. If you do not see ‘su binary not found’ then you are finished! If you do see ‘su binary not found’ move on to the next step.
8.Uncheck ‘ota survival’ to restore root access. ‘su binary’ should now show a version number. If successful, recheck the ‘ota survival’ box as a precaution to future updates.
9.Done!
I'll try it, I'd like to know first though if this can brick your phone? I know there's always a risk, but I'd like to know HOW much of a risk.

Ok so no matter what I do, everything is fine when I update the binaries, but then when it says "making sure su binaries work", it fails everytime. Whether I reboot, or just keep hitting update. I'm using superuser by chainsDD, I'm not sure if this is the correct app you mentioned. What do I do from here?

Yeah the SU from chansDD is the good one.
Make sure your using the latest version of the Superuser app, another option would be to try using SuperSU since it also has OTA survival. Also is root access functioning normally for you?
I used superSU pro and did survival mode before, my issue with that is I would have root access just fine, but then when I would make a NAndroid backup, suddenly root would be gone.
Superuser by chainsDD works, but no matter hown many times I update the SU binaries, when it gets to the last step that says making sure binaries work, it says fail every time. I don't know how to get around that.

OTA update fails
Hi, I have SuperSu installed, and when I try to do OTA update on my Galaxy S4 4.2.2 (MF3), the installation fails at 25% mark. I tried disabling and hiding Superuser in the SuperSU settings, but it didn't help.
What should I do?
It might just be the ROM itself that won't install. Try a different 4.3 ROM, and see if the same thing happens.

Can I recover root?

I had an issue with storage on my S5 and unintentionally uninstalled SuperSU and lost root.
My phone still shows Knox as being modified and device is labeled custom. I can go into twrp recovery, but superSU won't open, says I am not rooted.
Is there a way to get root without having to use Odin and a PC? Or do I have to start fresh again? I'm on stock 6.0.1
I'm sure I have to re root but, I'm hoping someone might have an idea since the only reason the root is gone is Super SU file got deleted.
Thanks in advance

In case anyone was curious about my post and if I found an answer. I was able to get my phone rooted again without a PC or having to do anything special.
Since my phone had been rooted already and TWRP is installed already, I just needed to download the latest version of superSU zip, go into recovery using TWRP install the superSU zip file and the phone rebooted. Once the phone was up I opened superSU app and it said all was well.
I then downloaded jrummy Root Check and verified root. Installed jrummy's Busy Box and my already paid for version of superSU pro.
Next will be Titanium backup and the pro version.
So, it was so easy, getting root back. I knew there had to be an easy way because all I did was accidentally delete the superSU files and that was it.
I hope this helps someone who has the same problem I had.
