Best way to selectively sync? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Currently using xposed /smart network. I have autosync disabled with screen off. I'd like to go a step further, but I guess not disable autosync completely. I'd like to keep push notifications (especially hangouts and gmail) active, and maybe have the stock Samsung email client update periodically (maybe every 2h, but this isn't too important). Everything else I want to update automatically, but only when the app is opened (contacts, calendar, fb, etc). What's the best way to achieve this?

If you want to selectively update apps, edit their settings separately.
Just for example, you can set yahoo application "not to sync automatically" until you open the application.
For your case, you want calander and all other stuff to sync periodically, go to settings - > accounts
Select google
Uncheck the undesired.

Was hoping not to do do each app separately, especially since many don't listen. If I uncheck the Google Apps, will they still sync when I open them?

Yes. You have a refresh option to sync the app when you are inside it say Google Calendar.

... But it won't sync automatically when I open the app.

Try trigger application. http://techpaver.com/trigger-automate-tasks
This might automate your syncing. Select wifi as a trigger. Whenever you are connected to wifi network, then only auto sync will take place automatically, otherwise it won't autosync.

I had a similar thought using tasker, but can't figure out how to do it.I'd like to create a profile that runs at a certain time of day while on a/c, enables sync of calendar, contracts, dropbox, etc, and then disables synching to those accounts.

For this you have to use a more powerful app, tasker. It takes a/c as a trigger

Yeah, I was able to figure it out using tasker.

gmail sync

I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to set gmail to only sync at certain intervals. For instance sync every hour, 2hours, 3hours, etc...
I want to have it sync but would prefer to save battery by having it on a set schedule instead.of constant sync or manual sync. Fir now I just do it manually but would prefer to have a set interval.
is their an app I can get to set this? Maybe even another email app I can have my gmail sync thru instead of the gmail app that would have this option? Thanks for any help
checkout settings/battery & data manager/data saver or data delivery. looks like you can set email and corporate sync.
or you could try settings/accounts/long press your gmail account/open account/ and uncheck sync gmail. and just manually recheck when you want it to sync
couldn't really find an app that does what your looking for, google uses push so you pretty much get the notification asap. if i'm sitting at my workstation with gmail open i tend to get the notification on my phone faster than my browser. you might have to just leave sync off and turn it back on when you want to be notified of new emails
Yeah what I have setup right now((running eclipse 8.1 that has aosp account/sync settings ))
I unchecked autosync and turned off background data.
then when I want to check I just open gmail and press menu>refresh.
I really ONLY read my emails through the gmail app. I don't use the browser version much at all.
I was just hoping someone new of a way I could get it to automatically sync but just every hour or something. O well. Guess ill stick to this method until google integrates that option into gmail app. I sent them feedback asking for the option so here's to hoping im not alone. Thanks.
im sure your not alone, though you might go unheard just because the point of having gmail at the convenience of you phone is to get you your emails no matter where you are. but i'd send google some feedback regardless, even if they don't add that type of feature quickly, google does want to please its audience.

[Q] Samsung Gallery app data usage

Hi all, has anyone noticed the Gallery app using a huge amount of data? I've had the phone a week and before I disabled it on Friday it'd clocked up 770MB of data usage. Anyone know what it's doing!?
Also, anyone know how to make Justpictures or another photo app default to the preview app for the Samsung camera? Since I've disabled the Samsung Gallery app and chosen Justpictures as the Gallery app, the camera just crashes when I tap the preview icon after taking a pic.
Maybe you have activate auto sync to dropbox or google+. That will use a lot of data to upload all your photos.

Disable in accounts and sync > Google act > Sync picassa web album. I suffered same data usage

In the first few hours of owning the phone, Google + had used close to 200mb. Don't even know what Google + was so I froze it in Titanium.

Same problem here. Why Samsung took out the "Sync on WI-FI" option.. I want my albums to be synced.. but only on WIFI..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740975
Come on!!! Any solutions?
Same here. I want it over wi-fi. My data plan is too limited. 300 megs and in just under 4 days it blew through 150 of those before I found out what was going on. Now I have less than 150 to go with 28 days remaining on my plan.
Just disable Picture sync and use an aftermarkt sync Tool such as 'Photo Sync' on the market seem to do exactly what you want.
I downloaded Droidwall and just blocked it out over 3g. Done!

My solution was to turn off "Sync Picasa Web Albums" and set google+ and dropbox to only upload while in wifi. So far so good!

Yeah for sure, but that's not a solution! That's a patch loosing by the same time the use of all your pictures on your phone. The real fix is for samsung to do, "PUT BACK THE GOOGLE GALLERY" or at least add the Sync on WI-FI only like google does. Freakin wiz and app override.

Whatsapp Autosync

Question. If I turn off autosync for Whatsapp will it stop being able to send and recieve messages?
You will be able to send and receive messages if autosync is off.

I stopped Whatsapp auto-sync but it keeps turning back on again (not immediately though). I believe it was re-enabled by Whatsapp background service.
Other than uninstalling the app, how do I disable Whatsapp auto-sync and make it stay that way?
Why would you disable it in first place?
I see no reason to becasue it only uses very little data I believe, maybe even none.
And it is very useful, because i you disable it, whatsapp won't be able to see wether your contacts have whatsapp or not.
I would just leave it enabled
Whatsapp uses about 20k a day just syncing. That's about 600k a month. This may not be much in the grand scheme of things but it's 600k more than necessary. And I don't like app's phoning home when it's not necessary.
I don't sit around adding new phone contacts every 5 minutes and I'm quite happy to manually sync when I need to (once in a blue moon). If it wasn't for gmail I'd have auto-sync turned off.
The only way I can think of doing this is to hack the apk and remove the write sync permissions... but then you'd have to do that for every update.
I've used apktool to remove the sync write permissions from whatsapp and so far it seems to be working ok; Still need to check it's effects on battery though.
If anybody wants to try this you can find instructions and tools here.
You'll need to make 2 versions of the apk:
The first version is unchanged but is needed so that the signatures match with the second version. You should uninstall the original version completely then install the first version so that the sync entry is created for whatsapp.
For the second version you need to edit the manifest file and remove the line that gives sync write permissions. This version needs to be installed over the top of the first so that the sync entry for whatsapp is already created. You can do this through adb with the command 'adb install -r yourwhatsapp.apk'.

After much monitoring of my good old Galaxy S GT-I9000 on 2.3.6 XXJW4 and its countless freezes and auto reboots I realised the culprit seemed to be WhatsApp auto syncing address book to its servers.
I reached this conclusion after (i) freezing WhatsApp and seeing the problem disappear and (ii) not freezing WhatsApp but deleting full address book and the problem seemingly disappearing as well.
I 'only' have 2,700 contacts and I uploaded them onto the phone via Google Sync, importing the Outlook file into the Gmail account (and using it to deduplicate contacts etc).
I have tried both deleting the WhatsApp autosync account from the Account list on the phone and also manually disabling WA autosync but (i) the account will pop back up every time after some minutes, autosync enabled and all and (ii) autosync will turn itself back on automatically as well.
I have indeed disabled 'show hidden contacts' in WA settings to no avail (if purposefully enabling it, the Account and / or autosync seemed to come back instantly, together with the 'syncing' notification on the status bar).
I am simultaneously using Telegram and BBM as well as Facebook messaging and Twitter and it is only WhatsApp wreaking havoc with my phone.
I would be very interested to know if anyone else has experienced the same issue?
Cheers

I'm also experiencing the same problem. Auto sync always turns itself back on. I hate it when apps don't obey my command.
The main reason why I don't want autosync is because Android is powerless against so-called 'read only contacts' it can only offer to hide them instead of deleting them.
If I decide to delete a contact which happens to also be tied to whatsapp, Android can only hide the contact (and I don't want that).
I recently got to know an app called whatsapp+ but I don't know if it solves this problem.

GMail annoyance

Is there any way to force the GMail app to download email as soon as it arrives, rather than waiting for me to go into the app and look at it, and wait for it to download at that point? The standard behaviour is a waste of my time!
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
It does download emails fully when autosync is enabled. Sometimes going into the app doesn't load the mail immediately and it looks like it's downloading, but you'll see that if you go back once and return to the mail it loads immediately. That's a bit annoying, but it's not downloading the mail only when you view it, that's for sure. If you're asking about Gmail delivering push emails without autosync enabled, then that's not possible. It has always needed autosync to be enabled to receive push emails, otherwise you have to go manually and refresh to see new mails. I wish that Gmail could deliver mails without autosync, like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenge, but it can't right now.

Syncing Apps Between Devices Using Carbon App

I have set up the speed dialer, bookmarks and passwords using the password manager on the Boat browser on my Nexus 10 and I would like the same set-up on my Nexus 4 without having to do it manually.
The Boat browser does not provide a way of syncing all data between devices and I wondered if the Carbon app could do it.
Does anyone know enough about the Carbon app to know if that will work or any other way to enable data sync between two devices?
Thanks
I use DataSync to sync game and app data between devices. It's awesome. You can choose any application on your device, even queue them up, and sync with Dropbox, or sync directly between devices.

Plus 1 for data sync. I use it works great.
Thanks for your replies.
I've decided to use the Carbon app by Clockworkmod because I am not rooted so can't use datasync.
Sv: Syncing Apps Between Devices Using Carbon App
It seems to be a problem with Data sync beta with multiuser in 4.2.1 though. I synced some apps and it then was present on all user accounts with my data. Apps wasn't even installed on those accounts from the beginning. I'm a little bit worried I actually overwrite my wife's game data if I sync a game we both play.
Also I want automatic sync but I don't understand if it's just sync by schedule or as soon as app data has changed?
Now I also need to choose direction all the time and for some strange reason data is sometimes updated latest on my tablet than remotely even though I know remote is that latest so it is confusing from time to time.
