I am using an AT&T Atrix 4G (rooted and has NottachTrix ROM with 37p radio) in India on BSNL AP circle and I have been getting really poor reception. It is so bad that I can only receive or make calls about 25% of the time. Many times, the phone shows no signal, but often it can't receive or make calls even when there are full bars on it at that moment. I tried using the other popular radio posted here, which is 36p and that showed no difference. Is there another radio that is better suited for this region and mobile operator?
I also have a severe battery life problem. With a brand new battery, it lasts about 24hs on standby, but even with a bit of usage it will not last full day. Sometimes it goes from around 60% to under 10% overnight (in 8hrs or so). I am using JuiceDefender for maximum battery life, and also verified with CPU Spy that the CPU is going into deep sleep as expected. Battery usage always shows "Phone Idle" and "Cell Standby" as the biggest battery consumers. Perhaps, the same problem that is causing bad reception is also causing the battery to go down quickly? I bought it as a used phone and used it on T-Mobile for a few days before leaving US. The battery life was terrible then too, but I thought it was because the battery was getting old, so purchased a new one before leaving.
Even though the reception on T-Mobile was also bad, it was nothing compared to what I am seeing here. Besides, T-Mobile didn't have a good coverage in that area anyway, so the reception was just like most of the other phones I tried there. My guess is that there is nothing wrong with the hardware itself, and the right modem firmware will fix both issues. Could someone who is already using this model in India, preferably with this mobile network comment?

Been using the Atrix for the past 6 months. Have used in AP Docomo, AP Vodafone and Chennai Aircel networks, Reception is top notch.
Everyone knows about the quality of BSNL signal and your problem lies there, IMHO.
Battery life is also awesome.
I used CM nightly and I do not overclock. I found faux kernel to be draining my battery so not using that too.

Interesting... I have heard people say bad things about BSNL signal, but I didn't think it would be this bad, so I was still under the impression that the issue is with the phone. May be I should borrow some dumb nokia phone from someone and confirm/rule out the issue with signal quality
I have't tried CM yet on this because I wanted the blur functionality for the dock, but I am not finding much use for the dock, so may be I will switch to CM one day, if only the support for biometric scanner is added. Thanks for the helpful reply!
Well, since the signal is always alternating, it increases the battery usage, i think
Well, my first concern is the reception. With full bars showing up, i am some times unable to make or receive calls. If his can still be BSNL issue, then I might just have to switch. When the phone is in this state, I have occasionally tried to see if restart would fix it, and though I can't confirm it 100%, I was almost always able to make a call immediately after the reboot. The reason I can't confirm that a reboot fixes he issue is because, there is obviously a few minutes of gap between that might have had external change as well.

Support for the fingerprint sensor is already present in Cyanogenmod 7. Give CM7 a try. The phone is smooth and rock solid.
And as ticiano_arraes suggested, poor reception or network quality has a direct impact on the battery, as the phone keeps trying to get hold of a stronger network.

Nice, I would love to give CM7 a try. Is I said earlier, I am less concerned about the battery life than the reception, as 3 out of the 4 times when I want to make a call, I don't get the signal immediately. Also, callers complain about not able to reach me. This is not my primarily line, so I am able to somehow manage so far, but if the problem is definitely on the network side, I will consider switching to a different service. In any case, I will try CM7 and report back.
What band are you using?2g or 3g?never set it to auto.Set it to GSM ONLY
I use atrix with bsnl 3g sim, cm9 Turk, radio is 100R don't have any signal issues or battery drain if I am using only calls I switch to 2g only otherwise 3g only mode use lot of data if I switch to auto or other radios I had lots of issues but with 100R no issues good signal as well as good data speed so pls try that using for nearly 9 months without issue
This is what I have right now:
- Select network - 2G Only
- Operator selection - Select automatically
I don't have a GSM Only option anywhere.
First try 100R radio I too call& battery issues then switched to this radio now don't have network issue when using 36& 37 radios most of the time my mobile was not reachable even when signal was showing do u use data? If not select 2g only using power Widgets u can easily switch 2g or 3g mode easily try 100R with nottachtrix it was good & if u r interested try Turk cm9 & 100R it gives better battery life than others comparatively

Regarding bsnl signal I have six phones in my home using bsnl I m in a poor signal area using 100R I have better signal than e71,n900 I'm using so try it with ur current from so u can check difference

Thank you, will give that a shot now. I found the 100R download link from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21525149&postcount=8
That post also mentions 30p, did you try that?
I got my mobile with .30 then switched to 36 got severe battery issues & switched to 37 it will show signal but mobile all be not reachable then switched to 100R never looked back try with ur current rom check difference.
I'm on .30P and JB epinter's CM10 rom and signal is top notch, no reception problems, battery life great, from INDIA on tata docomo

If you have the stock ROM it's probably that the main problem is the radio that you are using right now. The radios control the way the antenna communicates and all that stuff. So if you are having bad reception, the antena is searching constantly and making more effort to keep you alive on the mobile network.
Try flashing a new radio, it's too easy. Just find in the forum a radio for your region( but it could be from anywhere, for example i'm in Finland right now but i use the normal att{usa}).
I read that you are using just 2G, that's great for improving battery life, but don't expect a huge amount. I always run in 2G and in HSPA+ when i really need the gps, fast info, etc, I'm always syncing with FB, Twitter, Instagram, listening to music and barely it last a day withe the extended battery(bh6x).
Hope this works for you
btw, ,flashing a new radio doesn't delete the data of your rom, it's so easy
I have now observed the signal quality over 24hrs with the 100R firmware and I think there is marked improvement in quality. There were times when I had no signal and I couldn't make calls, but at least I didn't have a situation when there were bars showing and yet the call didn't go through. Obviously, I need more time to see if what I am seeing is genuine.
On the other hand, I don't think the battery life increased significantly. With very light usage, it went down from 100% to 22% in about 23hrs and 70% of that is in Phone idle. I have attached 3 snapshots taken at different times of the battery usage to show what I mean. May be it is just the stock kernel not fully optimized, so I will give CM7 a try.
I installed cwm touch recovery 5.8.1.8 and wondering if the backup created by this recovery is complete enough for the stock rom so that I can switch back to it if CM7 doesn't work out.

Does this ROM also support biometric scanner? What would be the biggest reason not to use it and go with CM7 instead? Stability?

No, this ROM doesn't support biometric scanner and the stock Camcoder cannot record videos due to Nvidia Driver Issues (3rd party video recording apps work), apart from that sometimes random reboot, rest everything works like WiFi Hotspot, GPS is great, and instead of staying on GB I'd like to stay on JB with these few quirks...

AFAIK CM7 it will work and with CM9 it will not
Does anybody know what is going on?
Problem: Data will periodically not work. (No indication on the status bar)
It is also worth mentioning that I have already used over 7 gigs in this bill cycle, and am most likely being throttled
Current Work-around: Enable airplane mode, then disable airplane mode. This works 95% of the time. If it does not, I reset the phone.
Has anyone else seen this type of behavior?
It happens to me. Called Att about the the situation and they checked the surrounding towers, told me reset the phone, blah, blah, blah. They told me to go to my Att local warranty repair shop and swap it out. Lol.

I have to do this at least three times a day. Turning on and off airplane always works. I'm on the base 0.7.3 and the freegee kernel that comes packaged with the base.

So the data indicator disappears altogether? Does the issue occur in multiple locations more than a few miles apart? When data returns is it slow, pages time out etc or does it function as it should? Has it been that way since you got the phone or did you notice it after a change to the device (software update/ change in software)?

The indicator on the status bar is unchanged. You can have full bars showing 4g, and this will happen.
This occurs all over the place. (My apartment, office, etc)
When it returns, everything is normal and fast.
I flashed The Base about one week after getting the phone (got it right before Thanksgiving). Started noticing this behavior maybe 2-3 weeks ago. (also random reboots, but this thing reboots so fast I could care less.)
If it's occurring everywhere you go it's def not a network issue, could potentially be related to provisioning but its doubtful, if you're being throttled it would be consistent edge speeds not intermittent on then off. All signs point to device, could be hardware but 90 percent of the time it's software related. You could call tech support first, they can verify its not provisioning or network related then will recommend flash back to stock or you can just skip the call and flash first. If all else fails hardware would be the culprit in which case its covered under manufacturers warranty. On a side note I do know our roaming agreement for some parts of TX expired a few weeks ago and that could potentially be related to your issues, although if you show good sig and others around you hadn't been experiencing the same probs you could rule that out too.
Happened to me on pure stock. I rooted and it stopped. No clue what caused it.

I've had the same issue. it's like the device isn't switching between wifi and LTE properly. sometimes it transitions just fine and other times it only looks like i have a connection. in fact, some things will come thru, like email...but web browsing or facebook do not work. if i do the 'airplane mode' trick or I'll just reboot it the issue is resolved.
I'm hoping CM10 will correct this issue...if not, I'll go back to stock and try to swap the device.

I'm having the issue well. I called att and they said they were going to replace the sim and if that didn't fix it, they would see what LG said for warranty replacement. I just noticed it a few weeks ago.
I'm completely stock.
Happening to me too on my replacement device. For example I will try to access an address via Google Maps and it will say "No Connection" despite '4g' displaying with full bars. A toggle to airplane mode and back fixes the issue - and all of a sudden LTE will show up. This did not happen on my previous LGOG and I'm running the same software environment (unlocked, thebase .73) It's frustrating for sure.
I have the same problem

Seeing this behavior here as well. I can also verify it seems to happen when switching for HSPA to LTE.
I'm all stock too.
Also getting this issue. I'm on Nocturnal with unlocked sim running on Tmobile. I'm glad it isn't just a Tmobile issue... It's probably software related

This problem presented itself to me yesterday. It basically went into airplane mode by itself and then immediately reconnected. It was after a phone call, when it was switching back to lte.
I think this is a baseband software problem as well. That ~300MB ota seems to have a new modem bin in it so it'll be nice to see if the newer radio firmware helps. Moden bins seem to be easily dd'd from pc to phone.

Yeah, I was thinking the new update would solve this but I guess I'll just wait until Nocturnal incorporates this into one of their roms
Interesting, this may be why the stock weather app periodically is not updating (even though I have 4 bars and 4G logo) and I get the message that it "cannot retrieve current location" turn on WiFi and everything is good?

I'm on T-Mobile and having this issue, I wasn't before on my old Sensation 4g so I know it isn't the area that I'm in.
I work two weeks at a time in an area where I don't get data coverage (even cell coverage is spotty at best). I do have access to (slow) WiFi. I've noticed that if I connect to the WiFi, then go out of range or if my phone goes into deep sleep, when the phone tries to reconnect, sometimes it will tell me I'm connected, but have no actual connection (404 error when loading websites), or it will tell me the WiFi network is out of range, when I know it's not.
The only way I can get it to reconnect is to reboot. The airplane mode on/off trick doesn't work for me.
Is this part of the same issue as the switching from data to WiFi? Anyone have any clue as to how to fix this?
When I updated my T-mobile phone to 20D JB, it was very insistent on me using the WiFi calling feature.
I had not used this feature with the 10G and since the cell signal is fairly weak at my house, I thought I would give it a shot.
Then I noticed my battery usage was sucking down like mad. With 10G when the phoneI was in stand-by it would end up using between 2-3%/hour. With the new 20D installed the phone was using 7-9%/hour just in stand-by. This went on for couple of days and I almost thought about going back to 10G to get back the better battery usage.
I turned off the WiFi calling feature hoping that would alleviate the massive battery usage. Still no luck.
Yesterday, I went into advance WiFi setting and found that the WiFI calling feature had left the WiFI on all the time setting even though WiFi calling was turned off.
I changed the setting to "only when plugged in" and the battery usage returned to what I was seeing with the older version. I have attached the picture of battery usage from yesterday.
So for me, it's better to leave the cell radio on and let the WiFi come on only when needed than to turn off the cell radio and leave the WiFi on at all times.
YMMV.
One question, did you update via the backup or the official OTA? The backup is missing some updated radio files, which seem to pertain specifically to Wi-Fi Calling.
For me, it is quite the opposite. On 10E and 10G I had horrible battery life and wifi calling barely worked. Ever since I upgraded to 20D I have been using wifi calling as much as possible and my battery life is amazing! Almost as good as my iPhone's battery life was!
For the question above just to rule stuff out, I upgraded via OTA, I am rooted via OTA root keeper, and Normally I have horrible cell service in my home. Which is weird because the second I walk out of the house it is excellent!
I did some searches on this and I can't find anything on this.
I've just noticed that my phone is stuck on 'H' signal, it can scale up to H+ as normal but as soon as the data has finished transmitting it will go back to 3G for a split second before returning to H and staying there. This has happened for a few days. I've noticed that my phone is getting unbearably hot (with a UV CPU and GPU, fully tested, stable) and my battery life is awful.
I've now gone back to a completely stock system, ODIN reflashed the GMK6 update (stock recovery, kernel, modem and ROM - ROM was always stock anyway) and the problem still persists.
I'm going to phone my network in the morning to see if they've done anything in the area or if anyone else is reporting the issue but has anyone else ever witnessed symptoms like this?
More background: I've recently tried ArchiPort 4.4 before going back to stock and I've been using the Devil2 kernel for more than 9 months. In the UK on the Three network, which is 3G only, no 2G.
My wife and I bought Verizon LG G3s on the same day last month. Lately mine has been dropping from LTE to 3G most of the time. Hers is always LTE. This happens when the phones are in the same location.
IS there anything in the settings that might be causing this problem and is there anything I can do to get back consistent LTE?
My phone does the same. Once it switches to 3g from 4g it has a rough time going back. My wife's g2 doesn't have this problem. Since we can't update our radio's I suggest making airplane mode your best friend.
Do you me toggling airplane mode on and off solves the problem for you?
What I don't get is that after going Airplane mode or turning off Call Data, and then turning it back on again my phone will sync at -93dbm LTE for a little bit, maybe 2 minutes or so, but as soon as it goes to sleep and I wake it up it lands at -103dbm and never back at -93dbm.
I think the radio in these phones has problems.
I don't know if this will help or not but when I bought my G3 "global" mode was default instead of LTE/CDMA.
Try changing it and see if that helps.
Settings
Mobile networks
System select
Network mode
-change global to lte/cdma
Mine is on global. The other choice, LTE, GSM,UMTS is greyed out. However, my phone is on 4gLTE at the moment.
Switched mine from Global to LTE/CDMA and the signal strength jumped to -93dbm but a minute later it was back to -102dbm.
When this issue occurs do you see a SIM icon with a question mark in it? Ive been having an issue where it drops from 4g to LTE and that icon appears, toggling airplane mode or restarting the phone fixes it. Im going to try getting a new SIM next time it occurs, but im definitely worried about getting a replacement phone that is on the "C" software version (no root right now)

No I have not seen a SIM card icon. It's purely a signal issue. I rarely if ever drop out of 4G where I live but I wonder why the signal starts out at something like -93 until the phone goes to sleep and then ends up at a solid -103dbm.
Seems weird.
Power management on the radio might be too aggressive as the phone warms up ?
