E-mail App - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just a general question, or just a point out. Why would google put that e-mail app in Lollipop, when gmail can take care of all your accounts, another thing the email app is not even usable when you open it. It'll just redirect you to the Gmail app. Just weird Google would do that.

Gmail handles all email accounts now. Just slide out the side menu, and the accounts will appear by the top if you linked them.

Actually, gmail *does not actually* handle anything at all besides gmail itself.
It is actually opening activities from the regular email application.
If you disable gmail, you will find that the functionality of email increases.
Either way, they both suck badly. I suggest k9mail and disabling both of email/gmail.

Gmail does actually handle exchange and hotmail .... at least for me.
I deleted Touchdown.
Wish Inbox was updated to handle more than just Gmail.

I have and icon it is call Gmail, click on it one of the inboxs is exchange.
I compose email, it sends email.
Why be such a " ", I open Gmail it works why should I care less how?
Why I ever want to disable Gmail it works it provides my inboxs, calendars, and address books from every email account I own.
How it does it I really do not care.
I have to have Gmail why would I be stupid and install something else if Gmail does the job.
Did you read my post. (I own Touchdown found it was not needed and deleted it)

I know what program is open, it is Gmail and it is not opening an exchange email app.

Maybe try it before calling people that actually use Gmail to get mail from an exchange server a liar? or just troll on?

Give up. You are incorrect and parroting garbage being spouted by people who have no idea what they are talking about.
In fact, how about you try this TO PROVE ME WRONG:
DELETE the following trees;
/system/app/PrebuiltEmailGoogle
/system/app/PrebuiltExchangeGoogle
But LEAVE
/system/app/PrebuiltGmail and whatever update may be installed in /data/app
Observe how suddenly "gmail" can no longer use IMAP, POP3, SMTP, or exchange.
Hmm, I wonder why that would be, if these were actually functions of gmail.
Like I said, I'm truly sorry for you, that you were dropped on your head as a child.

Why no other mail??
Apart altogether from the frankly appalling suggestions (which should warrent a permanent ban, I have a relative who was dropped when small) why (apart from paranoia and greed) does Lolli not have an option to pick up the former mail app; I don't like gmail and don't like learning a new one.

I don't know if it's greed as much as survival. I'm the same way where I prefer not to use the gmail app and YouTube app or be logged into my browser and have google search everything I'm doing. What got me excited about gmail when it first came out was it offered free pop3 with basically unlimited storage for free. Then they offered imap which was way better. All these years since gmail came out I only logged in to the actual gmail site or app very rarely, mostly just because it's better at searching for old emails. Realistically though, as awesome as AOSP and Nexus devices are, it doesnt do them any good to offer a general mail client that pushes people away from the gmail ads. Makes more sense for them to try and get us Nexus people excited about Inbox even if a lot of us are old school curmudgeons. Very few people these days use stand alone email clients outside of the office. Much more people likely use their own personal domain email using gmail as the mail client as weird as that is to us.

[Q] Recomended email app

Anyone recommend a "one size fit all email app" like the iphone, for Att S2?
I'm using Exchange, yahoo, gmail. I have lots of folder in my exchange mail and the stock Mail is sux.
Moxier mail is good but only have 1 email acc. I need an app that can put all mails in one place and showing folders instead of coupel apps for emails.
Thanks
I use Gmail for all of my accounts. I set Gmail up to retrieve (pop) mail from my Yahoo account and my other email address forwards to Gmail. I have labels set up, which allows me to organize it. I've been doing this for a while and it works really well.
What about Exchange, all folder will show or i have to go settings and choose specific folder to view? it's a pain in the bu.. . I really like the way iphone's emails handle.

I've never used Exchange, but if you were able to successfully configure it for pop retrieval, it'd work just as your other email addresses, in terms of how you view them (outlined below). Otherwise, perhaps forwarding is an option. For the email address I have forwarding, I set up filters (scans incoming emails for defined rules) to apply labels (e.g., when the sender or recipient is ______, apply this label). It's something you'd have to toy around with, but I've gotten mine set up pretty well.
All emails would show in your Gmail account inbox (with labels on each one, if you've done this) and you have the ability to specifically select a label to only see mail with that label. This is something you can do online or on your device via the Gmail app (viewing individual labels). I've tried just about every email client and I've found that this method is what works best for me.
Good luck.

I was set up like this as well for quite some time - and it worked well. Recently switched to using maildroid, which I like, but haven't customized to get more functionality than I had with gMail yet...
What's wrong with the stock mail client? Seems really nice to me. Should support all of those account types and you can switch folders very easily.

The problem is with stock email. My folders didn't go in order some + subfolders.... Moxier mail gives exactly the folder in order like the outlook also display the number for new email....like the MS Outlook in computer.
I just reinstalled Moxier mail and use stock mail for yahoo, gmail also. Oh well, no choice

The stock email client is very nice and seems to work very well with Exchange. From what I've seen so far:
1) Tasks will sync
2) Folders are supported, much nicer and easier than with the Captivate
3) Flags are supported
4) Various display options such as first line preview, threaded emails, etc
5) Out of Office settings can be made from phone.
6) You can search emails on the server, not just those on your phone
7) In landscape it'll do a preview pane on the right-hand side. Not bad.
Try it, you've got nothing to lose. Seems pretty nice so far. The only thing I am missing is the ability to "check" multiple emails and take an action on a group of them (e.g., delete them all). You need to do it one-by-one. But so far it works well.
Anybody know if the stock email client can be set up for "push only" so it doesn't poll every x minutes for new mail?
Another vote for enhanced email. You can bypass exchange security rules

Enhanced Email is what youre looking for. I'm a huge Exchange user and this program easily integrates and works just like it does on iphone. You can choose which folders to keep in sync and it will notify you whenever a new message arrives in sub-folders.
The only problem I have with the stock email app is that you can't "Select All" and delete. That capability, and the ability to forward emails by clicking on several contacts and adding them , as the stock program does, are two features I really like; however, I can't find an email program that has both capabilities.

I installed Enhance email. However, it looks alike stock mail (may be I haven't explorer it much). I do like Moxier mail because it's giving me the interface just like Outlook (folder is in order same as my work laptop). Unfortunately, Moxier mail only have 1 account. Wish i can add other acc then it should be PERFECT

Why is there an email and gmail

Exactly as the subject states. I get notifications for both, And honestly, the Gmail app sucks anyways, as it doesn't sync with my email for quote awhile.
You can disable your Gmail account from syncing on gmail, but you can't delete it as far as I know. You can also uninstall the app from root explorer, but I don't know the precautions of that since the market depends on a gmail account. It would be safe to backup.

I agree. The push notification works better than the stock app. I only use gmail, so its not an issue. That's not to say I don't have a hotmail, live, and yahoo email address, just that I only USE gmail.
The gmail app let's you label, archive and choose which folders sync how long. The stock email client doesn't do any of that.

All I can say is the Gmail App is great, however, I have not used the stock samsung email client as the last time I used it, sucked big time, some email clients *old eudora especially when I first got my Samsung Captivate last year* were getting gibberish from sending e-mails. I use MailDroid Pro and Gmail.. Since upgrading to the i777, I am still using maildroid pro and gmail app. I even get gmail messages in maildroid because of the ease of deleting messages I don't want to see!
HTH,
Charlie
personally, i like having separate notifications via separate apps for my exchange email and gmail... it works better for me that way.
Because the gmail app blows away the stock email app when used with gmail... Since I only use gmail, the other email app is one of the first things I nuke.

Man, I use GMail too, but the app for it sucks for me. It doesn't update everything nearly as quickly as the stock email client.
1. If I delete emails from my inbox (from a computer or something) it takes hours before it shows up in the GMail app, and vice versa as well.
2. It doesn't refresh the emails on launch, it seems to be quite random (and in the range of a few hours late anyway)
I can see how the stars and folder would be nice, though I don't use them. But still, the intense delay in communication really bugs. Or is it just me?

Mine updates fine. I use both. The Gmail for the phone stuff and the other for work exchange email.
My gmail app is great as well. it updates quickly. you may want to check your settings.
i agree with the two above me... for gmail, when i read/delete an email from my computer the notification/email is gone from my phone within 5 seconds.
Don't Feed the Trolls!
Both Gmail and Stock email sucks, IMO. :Q
Gmail client
1. The biggest problem is, it only supported gmail. Everyone has several email accounts, don't you ? Then, you would need at least two email clients to read all of them.
2. No pinch zoom. Sometimes, the emails (in HTML format) exceeds the width of display, so you move to the right side to see them.
3. Sync is sometime slow, as indicated by other posts. I have encounter slow sync several times.
4. When composing new emails, it will prompt you matched recipients after you typed few letter. But, I would have to have an option to pick from Contact app.
Stock email
Most of let downs are due to Exchange support
1. In my corporate Exchange, I setup rules so that incoming emails will be moved to various folders. The stock email can only sync Inbox folder. You have to select that folder(e.g. "My other folder"), the email app will then refresh. But, it does not sync, as such, no notifications.
2. No "delete all" in Trash folder
3. In list view (the screen show preview of emails), to delete an emails, you need to press the email and hold it for few seconds. Then you select "delete". This is non-intuitive design. Gmail uses checkbox, and iPhone uses swipe delete.
4. Then, I feel there is "lag" when deleting the emails. Sometime, right after deleting the emails, the email app paused for few seconds before the app became responsive again. It's because the app is trying to refresh with server. But, it should do so in the background process. iOS's email is definitely much more responsive in this regard.
5. Similar to gmail, there is no way to pick recipients from Contact. You have type few letters, then you can pick from matched list. Don't get me wrong, picking from matched list is good. But, sometimes I just cannot recall recipient names. So bringing-up Contact app to pick recipients will definitely help.
How do you disable the gmail account from syncing (in the stand alone gmail app)?

Choosing delete from a context menu is very intuitive; I think what you mean to say is that is it not efficient. To delete multiple emails in a list view, just press MENU, choose DELETE, and then check off as many emails to delete as you'd like.

Just about to pick up the S3, one question: can I import and sync hotmail contacts?

I'm coming from a Windows Phone, and the great thing about it was it synced all my contacts to my main hotmail. Phone numbers, everything. I'm not interested in moving to GMail, Hotmail has always done it for me and that's that.
So as I'm completely 100% new to Android. My question:
Can I sync my hotmail contacts to the S3? As in, will they show up with their numbers and all? And is there a way to keep it syncing? Will changes made to either the phone or Hotmail reflect?
Many thanks guys, and looking forward to getting this beast of a device!

Yeah when I add a Hotmail account using the built in email client it asks if I want to sync contacts, I usually don't since I use Gmail. I just tried it and it showed one person with a phone number which could be right, but honestly don't know if the number is from Hotmail or something else.
However, you'll have to have a Gmail account to use Play Store etc, and it works really well for new devices/resetting etc, just put in your Gmail and you can restore everything on first boot.
If I was you I'd strongly consider swapping to Gmail, just my thoughts.

Thanks for the help, man.
Well I've had the same Hotmail for like a decade, and just had to switch it actually to Microsoft's new dumbass "@outlook.com" thing. There are so many people who have it, and I like their SkyDrive. All personal taste and all that.
At any rate, I do have a gmail address, and will be using it for Play. But not as my email. Which I do understand is a pain, and a purposeful handicap on my part.
From what you described, it does seem like it imported a number into your phone's contacts. Seems hopeful.

Yes you can, it was a pain to do at first as you have to configure your hotmail sing m.hotmail.com or something as far as I remember, you'll find on google what to do anyway... I, like you, came from windows phone and I do miss that amazing system but the s3 is sick
dont know if you also know that you can if you want also use activesync to connect hotmail to the built in email app, thats how i use it and it works a treat for me
for your users name its "\[email protected]" and for server use m.hotmail.com
It already has been mentioned that you have an Hotmail app and you can also configure an Exchange account. For what you want, you should go for Exchange account, because the app imports your contacts but it doesn't allow to edit them (I don't remember if you can add a new one, but I think you can't); with Exchange you can edit and add contacts, but you only get the first calendar (Hotmail app can sync all calendars). Since you haven't mentioned calendar I guess it's not important.

Unfortunately not, we are working on this feature though. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Ditto on this request, but I have another question that's similar (same?)... I have Gmail and Corporate email accounts I have to monitor. It seems just about every theme has just one email, one sms, and so on. I love the themes and the application overall, but the rigidity of icon placements and selections in the themes makes it hard to replace my stocker for work use.
Is there an ETA for when this will work? I don't use gmail and yet, I'm forced to see "0" for email. Also, shouldn't have to be logged in just to use a theming program. Let me go online to "see" new themes but requiring that I'm online is a waste of bandwidth and battery.

the application is great, but I only use that email exchange, you have a date for a version that would display the number of e-mail ?
If you associate your other accounts with gmail though, shouldn't this solve the issue partly ?

Hi,
We can't give an exact ETA, but it won't be anytime soon. The amount of resources required to integrate accounts other than Gmail would require a large of time from the developers which would put everything on hold - which is something we just can't afford at this moment in time. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Regarding the login box, this is for security reasons on our side, in the event that someone breaches our servers.
Thanks for the hard work, can't wait for other email accounts to be integrated :good:

So I'm not going to exactly blow our mind when I tell you about this app. However there is a new feature that was announced recently that might have gone under the radar for some of you. "Gmailify" is the horribly named new feature that lets you use any Yahoo or Hotmail email address with the Gmail app and take advantage of all of your favorite Gmail features.
Now I can consolidate both my @Live and @gmail addresses in one app. The Gmail client has always been my favorite app to use for email. So I much prefer to use this than a third party client to consolidate my accounts.
To get stared just add a new account like you would normally and you'll see the option to add your @Live and @YAHOOO accounts. Check out this video that was uploaded to Google's YouTube channel.

How many of you will take advantage of this feature?
Well, more years ago than I can remember I pretty much linked all of my emails to Gmail, so I've had this functionality across all platforms since then.
For as long as I can remember the android app has also let me choose which of these addresses to send from.
I'd recommend that approach tbh.
Can be done from the site. This app-feature lead me to it so that was useful. But I can read all the email accounts by anything accessing the gmail, Android and desktop applications.
Has anyone figured out how to Gmailify more than one account. I want to Gmailify both my hotmail account and my yahoo account. I can do either, but not both. Very silly limitation.

Hmmm, I am not running into this limitation. I am able to gmailify multiple accounts no problem.

That's not gmailfying, thats just adding an account to the gmail app (which has been around for years). Gmailifying means gmail completely takes over, when you open gmail (from any device) you will have the mail from the gmailified account alongside your gmail. Adding an account the way you describe is just local on the app. What you need to do is "link" an account, not just add an account. To do this, after you add an account, go into the setting and chose link to gmail. However, if you already have 1 account linked it will tell you that you can't have another one linked. I hope this makes sense.

OP gave up.
I have a terrible solution for your problem!
Just use 2 different users on your device, have 2 different sets of apps. With 2 different Gmailify apps, you can link both accounts separately. Will it work? Am I genius or a fool?

Well there's a 0% chance that I ve ever used the gmail app on my devices. I'm playing with CloudMagic email app now, it does what I want it to with all my email addys across the spectrum (course the stock Samsung email app did most of that, but wasn't installed on this custom rom)
