Doesn't matter if I long press or short press, it always opens the recent apps and doesn't trigger the Menu of the app I'm in. Is this the ways it should be? I'm on 4.4.4 stock. Thx

I've searched everywhere, but didn't find a solution for the following:
when you hold the bottom left hardware touchkey you'll get a popup browser with google search.
And if you hold the center key a window appears with recent programs.
Is there a way too change these shortcuts into something of my own choice?
My s2 is rooted, so maybe there is an app that will do the trick?
Like you, I'd love to remap the menu key to home and home key to menu. We use the home key much more often than menu and it's harder to press a physical key. However, I haven't found such a mod yet.
Remapping keys
I am looking for a way to remap long press of back key (i.e. hold down right key) to something else. Haven't found anything yet.
Now I am using SwipeSwitcher - I configured top left swipe to run Quicker, top right swipe to run a task switcher (I am using PreHome), bottom right swipe to run recent apps (I couldn't find an app to run ICS recent apps, I installed Nova Launcher and assigned the swipe action to its recent apps shortcut).
I've got a galaxy s3 running AOKP 4.2.2, and I want to make the home button open recent apps with a single click instead of having to long press or hit it to go to the home screen, then hit it again for recent apps. I've tried editing gpio_keys.kl with APP_SWITCH, but that just gives me the old pre ICS style switcher.
I remapped my capacitive menu button to Recent Apps on ICS. However, I've seen somewhere before a mod or something that forces apps like GMail, etc to show the on-screen menu button (I think it's called overflow menu). My problem now is that the apps still think that I have a menu button so it's hiding the overflow menu. How do I force ICS to show it? Or how do I make it know that I don't have a menu button anymore so it should show the virtual one?
I've done it long ago but my hard drive crashed so I can't figure out what I did before to achieve it.
This is on ICS CM 9 Xperia Active. Thanks in advance!
I would like to remap the capacitive menu button to the recent apps switcher (default long press of the home button)
and then remap the LONG press of the menu button to the menu function (I need the ability to use the menu button when within the stock samsung apps like messaging, because they use fixed layouts and their apps are designed without the menu overflow.)
also my question is would apps still detect the phone as having a hardware menu button? I would like to be able to have apps have the menu button and not rely on the hardware.
then maybe since I would no longer need the home button long press possibly remap that to kill the current app? (that is not as important but just a side note)
I have looked EVERYWHERE and can not find a viable way to do this on the stock rom. thanks

Mk2 4.3 using stock rom, xposed framework installed, and Root access.
So when I broke my s5 and self repaired it, I ripped the multitask button, so I can't force close my apps without going to one handed operation and touching the button there. I'm thinking that this might be a problem if I flash to CM11 or 12. Will I still be able to go to one handed operation, or will and is there an app that will allow me to go to my recent apps?
If you have a custom ROM on, you should be able to map another key to that function. For example, I mapped my recents key to short press - menu and long press - recent apps, and mapped long press home button for screenshots. You could try mapping long press on back key to recents.
