Hi all, I have tried several times to install a custom recovery on my i545 but have bricked it each time. I've got so confused with boot versions, LOKI etc etc that I don't know what to do now.
I've included a screen shot of my About page. Can you please point me in the right direction as to what steps to take to install a custom recovery please?

From what i see, you cannot flash a custom recovery as you are not on a MDK bootloader. You are running NC5 which is to say "forget about running a custom recovery or a custom ROM outside of Safestrap."

You can downgrade to mk2 or new, but still bootloader is locked, use safestrap 3.72 to flash safestrap compatible rom.

If you haven't done so anyway, you will need to root using towelroot. You'll also need to get SElinux changer from the play store and set to permissive. Then install safestrap 3.72 and flash roms from the dev section that say are compatible with SS. That is what we're limited to.

I'm coming from the S3 world. I've tried searching, but I'm a little confused. To install custom ROM/kernel for the S3 I had to unlock the phone & bootloader, then root & install custom recovery. What are the steps for the S4? It sounds like the bootloader can't be unlocked, but you can still install custom ROMs? Thank you!

If you have MKE you can flash custom recoveries and ROM's. If you have ME7 search out the Safe Strap posts and flash a compatible ROM, I find Hyperdrive rocks.

Thanks man! For either version, I will have to unlock & root first, right?
--EDIT-- So, do I have this right...I can only install a custom AOSP ROM if I have MDK firmware, which can be unlocked. Can't unlock and install one if on ME7?
Okay, so I have the VZW S4 (obviously) and I'm running VRUDMI1, rooted with Root De La Vega.
I downloaded ROMmanager and Tried to install CWM Recovery, it didn't work.
Then I downloaded GooManager and tried to install TWRP, also didn't work.
Is there another way to install custom recovery or am I to assume this is because the Bootloader has not been unlocked for this firmware?
If this bootloader has been unlocked could I be please be pointed in the right direction?\
Basically, my goal is to install a custom ROM and as far as I know, I need a custom recovery image and in order to do that I need to unlock my bootloader. Am I correct in these assumptions?

At this time your only option is Safestrap by Hashcode.

And that is a method of "dual-booting" or something right? So essentially, I could boot into a custom ROM but I couldn't overwrite the existing one, forever wasting the space that the original ROM takes up?

Some have installed a custom ROM into the stock slot. Do a little research and see if that's something you would want to do.

I think I am going to try it, seeing as it is my only option until the bootloader is unlocked for my kernel. Thank you guys so much.

As long as you understand that you can't flash anything but a Touchwiz ROM. You can't do that if your phone has firmware later than MDK.
No CM. No AOSP. And no, you can't downgrade to MDK firmware.

You can't flash AOSP roms on MK2/Safestrap, only TW (TouchWiz) based roms matching your current stock version (4.3).
thanks Oishi,
Can I flash back to an older stock rom that is not safestrap?

No, once you're on Stock MK2 you're locked to MK2 and have no other options than safestrap.

Here is a somewhat current list of compatible SS Roms
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2630040
Also check page 1 in the Android Development section; There are a few new ones that look tempting such as BajaRom for TW
Check out Eclipse 3.0 for an AOSP feel with TW compatibility.

Go into settings, click on about phone and tell me what baseband is he on.

You need to research how to root your specific build. They're not all done the same way. As far as a custom recovery, your ONLY option is Safestrap. I suggest you do a lot of reading before you run into bigger problems.

Since he's on nk1, he can still downgrade back to nc5. Go to this thread and get the full wipe nc5:

OK. My baseband says NC5 now, according to plan. Is towelroot my only option? Is safestrap my only recovery option? I thought that if you try to flash a recovery to try a rom when you are rooted with towelroot that it will brick the phone.

I don't know if Towelroot is your only option for root, but it's what I used and it worked fine. As far as recovery, like I said above, Safestrap is your ONLY option.

We can only use towelroot and safestrap. There are a few good roms in the development section that we can flash. Hyperdrive, echoerom, and Eclipse are solid. There are a few others as well that are closer to stock or are hybrids (aosp feel with TW base). Check out that section and flash only the ones that say are compatible with SS. I'm running echoerom v39.1. Be sure to read all the instructions since some of these roms may have other files that need to be flashed with it. Happy flashing!

There is no way at this time (and may never be) to install a custom recovery whether it is CWM or TWRP on bootloaders newer than MDK. You can root these phones but that's about it. Look into running safestrap if you want to run a custom rom (TW based only).

No, however there is SafeStrap. This would be your best bet for custom roms for the time being, granted they must be compatible. They are still working on SS so keep an eye one it as they are trying to make it so you can flash any rom.
