4.4.3 S ON, 'tampered'? - AT&T HTC One (M8)

with the assistance of the previous owner of my HTC One M8, the phone was rooted. everything worked great until i tried to upload a new rom. when i uploaded the new rom, wifi didnt work and i was S on with the 'Tampered' flag. after countless attempts to unroot the phone i downloaded a factory ruu 4.4.3. i have wifi, no root access, and the battery is awful! i just want to be s off, unlocke bootloader and no 'tampered' flag. i tried using 'SUNSHINE'. they refuse to help. apparently, the person who traded me for this phone and help root the device was very rude to them. any other alternatives? thank you

So when you run sunshine it says your device is not compatible ?

Not sure if the phone isn't compatible. According to a representative for that group, they have barred my phone's ip address. I've tried to reason with them, but they are completely unwilling to help me. Apparently, the previous owner of my phone was very rude to them. Are there any other alternatives to using Sunshine?

Well that sucks....cause no other way to get s-off....you could download an run sunshine to see if it will work...it checks phone 1st then will tell you...you only pay if s-off will be achieved.

I installed the app and received the error message "1776". I went on their live chat and was told to contact "beaups". He told me to create a ticket. Instead of him contacting me back, I got a correspondence with "jchase". Whatever the previous owner said to this company, they are pissed off. I guess I'm stuck with a power draining crappy 4.4.3

Sounds like you r stuck. That's crappy luck.

Try the 4.4.4 RUU, just released this week: http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-att/news/
If you did RUU (unroot, stock recovery, etc.) you shouldn't have the tampered flag. Or did you install TWRP again? Even so, who cares about the tampered flag? It only appears in bootloader.

Are you saying you are stuck with no root? Just unlock the bootloader again (if its relocked), flash TWRP, and flash SU or SuperSU.
Another option, is figure out what is draining the battery, and remove the offending app (root may be useful for this if its a system app). Might just be an AT&T bloatware that is causing the excessive battery drain.

i tried checking for updates for AT&T... says im up to date with 4.4.3. how i can the 4.4.4 ruu download?

Well... That ruu from the Link above didn't work. I know I Can always unlock and root again but... Any Rom that's 4.4.4 or lollipop won't have WiFi. I guess I'm stuck with 4.4.3 until I get rid of this phone.

Unlock Bootloader from HTCDEV.COM (Updated)

You can now unlock your rezound's bootloader at http://htcdev.com/.
Just follow the steps on htcdev.com, and at the last step you will have a factory reset. So, please make sure you do a backup before attempting this unlock trick. (Thanks to NilsP for pointing this out)
Bootloader unlock will grant perm root and possibility of flashing customized roms.
Note: S-on remains
BE AWARE:
bootloader unlock will VOID your rezound's WARRANTY, I am not responsible for any damage it may cause
[INSTRUCTIONS]:
[Prerequisites:]
HTC Sync (Windows Only)
HTC Super Tool
Enable USB Debug on Rezound
Use Charge Only mode when connected to PC
Exit HTC Sync on PC
[Steps:]
1. Go to HTCDEV website: http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/
2. Click on "Begin Unlock Bootloader" (create a user if you don't have one)
3. Use HTC Super Tool in the [Prerequisites] to generate your token. (Or, alternatively, follow the instructions step 1 through step 10 on htcdev.com)
4. In step 10, when posting your token, make sure you remove the blanks preceding each line
5. After you receive your Unlock_code.bin in email, follow step 11.
6. Now your rezound should reboot and you have your bootloader unlocked.
Now you are unlocked. You can follow the following threads to obtain perm root, flash recovery, flash new kernel, and overclock.
[Guide] You are Unlocked. Now What?
[GUIDE] Super-noob guide to unlocking, rooting, and flashing Ziggys kernel
7. After unlocking your bootloader, use this one to get perm root:
One Click Perm Root (Thanks to NilsP)
8. Flash the recovery if you need.
[Recovery] Amon Ra style vigor
[Recovery]ClockworkMod Recovery 5.5.0.4
scrosler kindly provides a tool to flash the recovery or boot img.
You can find it here
9. Flash Deodexed ROMs:
Clean ROM 1.0 from scrosler
RezROM v1.0 Beta from lllboredlll
Questions about flashing ROMs:
Possibility of flashing ROMs (Thanks to scrosler)
To uninstall the bloatware, try ROM Toolbox
Umm
WOW ... how exactly do you do this, and more importantly, can it be re-locked if you need to do a warranty exchange?
yeah, it does not show up in the list. But you can just go and do it. The Vivid forum is saying the same happened to their model.
Dammit! I almost jumped out of my seat when I saw this post! Booo!!!
And it worked. I am now "UnLocked"
And factory reset. Forgot about that
Sooo.....
What's the deal here? We got a free pass from HTCDev?
Now we have perm root and can flash roms from stock recovery?!?

Slow your roll....All we have is the ability to write to the system partition if I understand the "unlock" properly. S-ON still prevents rewriting the recovery partition. But perm root, yes.

You need an app like Titanium backup(which requires root), there are others but Titanium does a pretty complete job.

If you read the warning on htcdev.com it says that unlocking your phone may void certain warranty conditions. Usually if you need to return it you just put your phone back to stock or smash it on the curb and take the $50 hit in insurance ;-)

[Warning] Dont do the OTA if you want temp root

So i was kinda scared but i knew this day would come, VZW is pushing a update to all rezounds with H-boot 2.11. Concitering we dont have S-off yet this usually wouldnt be a problem but H-boot 2.11 breaks temp root. I have been using it for a while and it fails to push SU.
Just a warning so no one gets stuck without root
What about the people who are fully unlocked with perm root ? What happens if we run the update
Update failed in recovery for me. I've deleted some bloat though.

As far as I can tell, the update will not run. I let it download to my Rezound and then it auto-restarted after 3 minutes. Booted into recovery and said update failed. I rebooted from recovery and once booted up, I got a message saying "No new software update available" or something to that effect. Clicked "Finish" and since then, my phone has been working like before. From what I just experienced, there is no harm to your phone if you let it try to install, but nothing will happen either, so there is no benefit.

I am rather new... I'm not entirely sure:
1) How to get stock recovery back, haha.
2) If I even want to get it back. If HBoot is updated by this OTA, I don't know that I want it running and screwing up my root. Is that possible if I am unlocked and perm-rooted?
To be clear, I am willing to experiment for your guys' benefit, but would just like to be sure what I am getting myself into.

OK, well I can't do anything here from work, so when I get settled at home later tonight, I will see what I can do. I don't mind losing root until someone can figure out a workaround for those stuck with 2.11 hboot, mainly because a custom ROM is the only benefit I use from root at the moment. I can't figure out tethering to my Transformer Prime for the time-being anyhow, so losing Nils' ROM is a hit I'm willing to take for a bit.
If someone else does not figure out what you need before later tonight, I will do what I can.
By the way, it would help if you set up some steps for me. Like, do you want me to restore stock recovery, then check to see if stock recovery and custom ROM lets me install the update, then if it doesn't work, go back to stock everything and see if it works, then if it doesn't work go to relocked and see if it works? Just lay out each operation you want me to do to test your theories. I know far too little to be making up my own procedures. Inevitably, I'll finish and people will say, "Well, what about... and what about..."
I just don't want to waste my time or yours.

Root and 1.22 OTA

So I was driving down the road today and noticed that I could do an OTA...being extremely green to HTC, android, and rooting...I accepted. Then I noticed that things weren't working like they were before the update. Doh!
Came home...hopped on here and noticed that was very stupid. No more root.
So I have S-Off and bootloader unlocked (did when I got home) but no root. Is there a way for me to get it back?
Thanks in advance!

That method no longer works on the ota update.
If you're S-Off with bootloader unlocked all you have to do is grab a custom recovery and flash a superuser package. Since you're green here are some links.

Same here. I am rooted running MeanRom and today when the ota started, I cancelled it thinking it might mess something up with my root. I went to do the update this evening because I read users were getting better 3g speeds and what not, but when I go to install, it just reboots into recovery and so I followed with a reboot system in twrp and when it fully reboots, I get nothing.

S-Off is something you guys will want eventually and updating the Hboot will more than likely keep you away from that. Just sit tight and wait on the Rom of your choice to be updated or download the rooted update within the development forum.
That's what I was trying to suggest doing. I'm not really interested in the update as of right now.... Sitting tight! Lol

Not Happy....post 1.22.651.3
Guess this is what I get for not understanding the update before I installed it. Used Voodoo OTA RootKeeper, thought I was good to go. I should have known something was amiss when the update was a HTC software update and not a Firmware update. Not only did it nix my root, I can't even get to recovery, it blocked it.
My current configuration is:
TAMPERED
LOCKED
Jewel PVT SHIP S-ON RL
So I am thinking I am pretty much toast. Not real interested if flashing ROMs at this point, just wanted Root.
This totally s__ks. And 3 days before they light up LTE in my area, ugh.

hey guys,
very similar situation -
my phone never got 'auto updates' turned off, so on saturday it accepted the update and installed over my rooted evo lte. i have no custom recovery or unlocked bootloader. the phone now does not receive calls/texts (can send/call out fine) i cannot get it to flash back tothe stock RUU b/c i keep getting 171 usb errors. Is there a way to reroot it on the 1.22 software? i figure if i can root it, i can then unlock the bootloader and install a previous version on it to get it back to OEM settings. if it doesnt fix my communication errors, i can at least take it to sprint to get a new unit.
thanks

[Q] "RELOCKED" to "LOCKED" so i can get OTA update

Hi all,
Hope this topic hasn't already been covered a million times.
Here's where I'm at,
I've unlocked by bootloader, that's all no root or custom recovery.
Now when i try to do a OTA update i get the dreaded red triangle. very frustrating!
I've tried fastboot oem lock, but it says relocked, not locked and my OTA update still won't work.
I've searched high and low for a RUU for Telstra Australia, to no avail..... DAM IT!!!
Can anyone help???
If I root, use firewater to soff the use scotty's to relock, will the OTA work then? How would i get rid of the root?
I have some understanding of fastboot, adb and flashing but I'm still a bit of a noob so go easy.
Sorry if i posted in the wrong place.
Can you get into a custom recovery or no

Because you could use Guru found in HTC One Development which can Lock, Relock and Unlock the bootloader. If your not rooted then you would be fine to receive the update after reflashing the stock recovery.

I believe stock recovery is what you need and all stock system files in place to take OTA. I had my Max S-OFF, unlocked and rooted and it still let me take the Kit Kat update, so really not sure why you can't, being only unlocked. Are you sure you didn't alter any other files?
Yeah I'm sure, definitely only unlocked. It's driving me crazy! I wasted hours trying to work this out.
Here's the error msg I get,

What is that TuneIn.apk i see in the error? Could be you are missing that and it is a file it looks for.
Hmmm, that was a factory installed app that seems to have gone missing since I unlocked the boot loader, along with the HTC torch app. I will install it and see what happens...
After a bit more reading, unlocking the boot loader clears all data from the phone. Including a few apps that are preloaded in a data folder. It appears the update looks for these app.

That sucks, i wonder how I got mine to update after I unlocked, lucky I guess. Looks like you might be on the right track tho, let me know how it turns out.
I know I didn't relock to get ota. Perhaps its a device based thing. On sprint for instance I never have seen the relocked or tampered tags.

Still battling away, no luck yet. I have rooted with custom recovery now.
So you were on the stock recovery when the update went through?

Yes I was, I had just gotten a replacement and it was still on JB. So I immediately ran Rummrunner to get S-OFF and then I was unlocked, rooted and S-OFF, everything else stock. As soon as it re booted it ran the update for KK and all was good. After that I just put TWRP on and re rooted

Default settings

Hi, guys. I wanted to get Harman/Kardon. So I had to get S-Off. I unlocked Bootloader HTC then I rooted my HTC., but I was stuck at getting S-Off. You see I have a T-Mobile version of HTC One M8 so there's no way to get S-Off and Harman/Kardon too. And now I wanna return it to default settings. I mean I wanna lock Bootloader HTC and unroot it, like it was in it's first day. Is it possible?

Why do you think that? Unless you updated to the Android 4.4.4 software (HTC 3.xx), Sunshine S-off should still work. Its true that firewater doesn't work for most folks anymore, as it was patched some time ago.
Also, if you have the T-Mobile variant, why are you posting in this section? This is AT&T.
Yep, I was updated to Android 4.4.4. Today I've tried SunShine and it brought me to the pay screen. So it reads that it's possible to get S-Off. Tomorrow I'll try to do that. Sorry for the wrong section... And one more question:
Will soft resetting bring me to S-On if I get S-Off?

"Soft reset" is just a reboot. You might mean hard reset, or a factory reset.
But in all cases, no they will not make the device s-on. Once its s-off, the only way for it to be made s-on again if for you to change it back manually and intentionally. Even an updated hboot, OTA, etc. will not make it s-on again.

Ok, good.
The decision to unlock the bootloader, mod the phone and especially s-off should not be taken lightly. If you have already made that decision to mod the phone, no reason to go back, if you ask me.
Stated another way, once you've chosen to go to the dark side, why go back.
I got it. SunShine works on Android 4.4.4, software 3.32.531.2. (HTC ONE M8 T-Moible)
