[Q] nexus 9 voice call and side buttons - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys
Bought my new n9 LTE.
1) I heard I can't make calls on it. Is it true???
2) If can't make calls its fine, can I at least SMS some one?
3) I use a prepaid Sim card, and I don't use unlimited data package, I need to dial my operators *123# code to check my remaining internet data, how do I do it?
4) serial number of my tab is ht4c and I can notice a slight light bleed on the top right corner, is it normal compared to the previous models which had more light bleed?
5) Attaching few pix of the side buttons, can't make it from the pix on the net whether mine are normal or slightly in. Plz have a look and let me know
Thanks

Strange.... More than 100 views but no reply yet

1) No - although i'm sure there will be a way to do it
2) Yes, you can use SMS - install GoSMS or use hangouts.
3) Tablet will tell you how much data it's used
4) Seems to vary - at the end of the day, are YOU happy with YOUR device? I'm happy with mine!
5) Again - do they work for you? Mine work for me!

Great answer...
Buttons are fine with me...I'm fine with it..just got this mental feeling that my device is faulty after looking at others reviews.... My device has a little light bleed but I'm still ok with it.
Its noticeable only when a dark screen comes up . that's all
Rest I'm happy

Not sure if this helps since I don't have the LTE version, but I've made calls using my google voice number along with hangouts dialer.

Tried sms from hangout but when I go to settings in the hangouts app.
It doesn't show me the SMS option whereas I can see the SMS option in
My mobile motog2 which also has the same lollipop as of my n9
Now what?

[Q] Incoming call, contact icon has camera in it?

So when my wife calls me and certain other incoming calls, their is a tiny little camera icon within the contact icon pic. Is that for native ICS video calling or google talk or google plus. I'm not sure, and I dont see any way to even turn it on. Does anybody know what its for and how to use it?
Thanks.
If you go to the peoples tab under your phone settings I believe it should be next to her name as well. It is for Google Talk Video Chat on my phone so I would assume the same for yours. It goes between green and orange for available and away I guess. My brother and wife both have phones with FF cameras and I have the option on both contact entries.

straight talk

ok i got a i717 note and a att striaght talk sim card. I finially got the APN setting that came with the straight talk sim to save. Phone is making calls and messaging but the data services are not working. What am i doing wrong?
If your settings are like the ones in the screenshots I posted, then I would say there is likely problems with data im your area.
my settings are the exact same. no luck

also my carrier says "HOME" in the top left corner. I wonder if this has something to do with it?
Mine displays HOME when I pull down the notifications window and only for a few seconds when in the lock screen. Other than that it doesn't display HOME from what I've noticed. I don't think you have to worry about the what is displayed as the carrier's name. Since you are able to make phone calls and received messages (both SMS and MMS?) and the only thing that is not working is just data, then it's probably something in the phone configuration or a problem in your area. If you haven't done so yet I would recommend contacting Straight Talk.
What symbol, if any, do you have to the left of the signal bar?
I know this probably isn't the case but did your turn Wifi off? If not try turning it on or off and making sure it stays off so you can connect to the data network.
I don't know if you have done so but you could try a factory reset, not sure if this would help.
If none of the above works you could try rooting and flashing the AT&T stock rom to the phone or some other rom. (Consult this recommendation with someone more experienced here on the forums. Personally, I don't see more troubleshooting options.)
If there is no problem with the network and none of the above works then I think your phone may be damaged, unless it used to work perfectly with AT&T. Did you switch from AT&T to Straight Talk or did you buy the buy through ebay or on the street to activate ti with them?

[Q] Lumia 920 wish list

I recently switched from a (jailbroken) iPhone 4s to a Lumia 920, and am very happy with that decision. My complete computing environment is based on Windows 8, and the phone fits into that environment without any effort.
Still, there are a few features that I miss in the Lumia 920 which I loved in previous phones:
- the phone does not have an option for automatic time sync, although the network (German O2) provides for that feature
- you can change ring tones, but not sounds for notifications and sms
- there is no way to activate visual voice mail, although I used to have this feature on the iPhone, using the same sim card and contract
- some kind of notification center
- there is no way to use the flash as indicator for incoming messages and calls
- there is no app like "my mobiler" in windows mobile or "veency" in ios
- although text selection and editing is much better than on the iPhone, I loved he little app called "SwipeSelection" from Cydia that moved the cursor when you were swiping with our finger over the keyboard
If anyone has a workaround (other than switching back to a jailbroken iPhone) for any of the things listed, I'd be grateful for a hint.
Thanks
The phone data is attached as screenshot
About the text selection, you can press and hold on the text and a cursor will show. Well Im not sure if this is what you're talking about but this is helpful in editing texts

Thanks, but: No, this is not what I mean. Here is a video which explains swipe selection best:

Carrier time is best because it gives you the current time even if you move across time zones. World clocks are available if you travel a lot and want to see multiple times for different locations.
Visual voicemail is something your carrier needs to turn on for your device, wp8 supports it. For instance in America ATT supports visual voicemail. You could try calling and asking them to support visual voicemail for your model.
In wp8 you can't do anything to change how the default keyboard works so adding the swipe app is impossible right now. Also everyone is hoping that they allow custom SMS tones soon.
Arrows in the chat pad/ keyboard!! led indication for missed calls or any event whatsoever, swipe/select text, longer battery life! besides that i am really happy with the phone.

I don't get all these longer battery life statements. This phone has longer battery life than any phone I have ever owned. I charge over night and it will last me minimum 12 hours. I have never had a phone that lasted that long. Best was 8 and average was 5. If you Lumia is not lasting more than 12 hours then i would suggest a battery drainer and then a full recharge. If it still does not last then you got one of the faulty batteries and I would suggest replacing the phone, or if you are tech savvy open it and replace the battery with one off ebay.:good:

[Q] SGP321 (LTE) Incoming GSM calls...

Hi All
From what I understand, the Xperia Tablet Z 4G isn't meant to be able to make and/or receive GSM calls. I came from a Samsung P6800 that was able to make and receive GSM calls so I have a SIM that is attached to a voice and data plan. I'm now using that same SIM in the XZT.
Earlier this afternoon, I turned on my tablet and saw what looked like a missed call screen that flashed by and disappeared. There was no notification of a missed call. I remember the screen had light colours - like light green and blue and yellow (if my memory serves me right).
Tonight I actually received a GSM call. I didnt get to answer it in time (well, let's say that when I got to the tablet, I stood there looking at it and wondering what was going on and the call stopped!).The screen that came up is what I described above. It had an icon of a phone with a circle around it in the middle of the screen. I'm guessing that to answer the call, I would've had to have put my finger on the icon and drag it out to a side.
I tried calling my tablet again with my normal phone to replicate it and maybe try get a screenshot, but I can't seem to get through on the number.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there software on the phone that can make and receive phone calls?
Edit: I should add that I'm on 4.2.2... and Build number is 10.3.1.A.0.244.
I had hoped I could use it as a huge phone, but nope.
I was told the hardware wasn't there.
But if you truly have had an incoming call, then there might be hope.
Right now I'm using Skype and the tablet redirect calls to my Skype-number.
There is..
I use viber a lot and everytime i recieve a call there is a phone with a circle and a wave on it and i just drag the phone to the right to answer it.

Yeh, I thought that it could be Skype or Viber or one of them chat apps, but I wasn't signed into any of those at the time. I'd only had the tab for a couple of days and was still in the process of installing apps.
It hasn't happened since then.. but i'll keep a lookout for it and see if it happens again.
How about Google Voice? If you have it set up on your account you might be getting a call to that number. Try calling it.

[Q] LTE woes ($50 AUD bounty)

Hello all,
I'm on the following:
Nexus 9 32GB LTE manufacturer date 13/01/2015
CM12 Nightly 03-18
SIM Card with full network permissions (data, SMS, MMS, calls)
What I would like to do is be able to dial out and receive calls and SMS.
I've been fiddling and reading for the last few days, to no avail.
Apparently there has been LTE support since 03-13, and I can see that the tablet understands the network I'm on.
I will gladly pay out a 50 via paypal to whoever successfully solves the problem for me.
Also you'll get to feel nice for anyone else who has this issue.
Some notes/background:
- I really love CM12, and would really rather stay on it. I'm willing to go to other ROM's if that has to happen, but only if they are similar enough (5.0.2+, well optimised, etc)
- I've noticed hangouts is supposed to be able to send SMS, but after reading up there appears to be no settings -> SMS.
- Yes, I understand there is google hangouts for voice calls and all that, but I'm a reseller, and need access to internal numbers only available via my mobile network/SIM card.
- The reason for the bounty instead of patiently waiting, is because I need this for work.
- The reason for attempting to have "all-in-one" is because I used to have both a phone and a tablet with everything tethered, and having multiple devices was not very conductive to work.
I don't understand exactly what your problem is. Can you be clearer with your question.
Does LTE data work on your tablet or does it not?

He wants someone to turn his Nexus 9 into a cellphone. I don't think the baseband hardware allows for that, and a $50 bounty is just plain silly.

Very simple solution: don't cheap out. What you are looking for is a Nexus 6 (SIX) -- large sized cellphone. Not a 9 (tablet).
BTW: I'll take that $50 for solving your problem now...
