Can't get Messaging app notifications to stop - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running 4.4.2. No matter what I do, I can't get my the stock messaging app to stop sending me notifications. I set my default SMS app to Go SMS Pro, but I still get notifications on my lock screen. I tried enabling it and turning off notifications, but I still get a notification on my lock screen.
What am I missing?

A. I would avoid go sms like the plague.
B. I have them disabled in the stock app (needs to be set as default to do it) then set what ever app you want as the default but make sure all messages are read in the default app before switching.

I did exactly that but when I get an SMS the stock messaging icon shows up on the lock screen, and dragging it towards the "lock circle" opens up the stock messaging app.

What device do you have? Custom rom?

I have a Posh E500 (poshmobile.com/catalogue/titan-hd-e500/). It's not the greatest phone in the world (and almost certainly the worst named), but it gets the job done. Anyway it has it's own custom Posh ROM and I recently rooted it using Kingo. Hope that helps.

Then I am betting that it is the OS that is preventing it. What you cold try as you are rooted. You could try freezing the APP with Titainium backup. Not sure about Kingo as I never use that myself. But try freezing the app. You will need to pro version. Or you could just delete the messaging apk, but make a backup of it just in case.

I tried renaming the Messaging apk (MMS.apk). But all that did was disable the app itself, and not the notifications. I would still get a Messaging icon notification on the lock screen, only this time if I dragged it onto the lock icon it would attempt to open the app and then fail.

Thats because it was still there. Try removing it and rebooting. Just make a copy of the apk somewhere so if it breaks something you can put it back.

Cool, let me give that a try.

Didn't work. I still get that darn smiley face notification on the lock screen. When I drag it to unlock the device, the OS doesn't do anything at all.

Then it is built into their os. This is part of the issue with custom OEM roms. You could try using a different lockscreen.

Got it. It might be difficult, but I think I'll try putting a new ROM on it. Thanks for your help.

[Q] cant stop 2nd message notification

I recently started having this problem where I keep getting 2 notifications for texts after using 2.1
I use handscent sms and turned off all notifications from the default messaging app but they both still notify me of a new text. Its annoying itll vibrate twice, ringer twice. plus I cant even get the default sms thing in the notification bar to go away unless I manually clear it. Never had this problem for the months I had this phone before the update.
Anyone come across this or know how to fix it?
(oh and I tried a search but the xda search engine is down, it's down like 50% of the time I try to use it, so please no harsh remarks about a repeat post if this is one)

Google always works.
google brought me right to this post. so at least the next guy with this problem will be able to fix it if anyone has an answer....? I cant be the first one with this stupid double notification.
seemingly, after disabling notifications, removing the messages shortcut from the homescreen does the trick, although i havn't tried this myself.
you wont loose the messaging its still in your APPS list.
just tried it and it does work

I had the problem for the longest time. I eventually found out that it was the SMS widget in Beautiful Widgets that was causing the problem, even though you hadn't activated it. Uninstall Beautiful Widgets and see if it works.

i had the same problem a while back too. and by disabling the notifications it still didn't work. what i ended up doing was clearing the SMS center number under network settings and retyping it in manually. worked like a charm

[Q] Prevent Screen-On due to SMS?

Does anyone know if there's a way to disable the screen turning on when receiving an SMS? I would really like to disable this if at all possible.
not sure if it's what you're looking for but if you install sms popup (which is a fantastically simple app) it's one of the many options that you can configure ...
hope this helps ...
This didn't prevent the screen from turning on. The basic SMS app seems to still turn it on.

the way this normally works, is you install handcent which does have this option. then you go in and disable to stock messaging app completely, so that only handcent or your replacement choice controls text behavior.

What you'll notice is that even if you disable the notifications on a the standard messaging app, the app still runs in the background as it's also handling all the incoming DB writes from what I can tell. Samsung re-wrote the messaging app which always runs (and can't be removed) and in this app is the control to turn the screen on. That's why I can't figure out how to disable it without breaking SMS functionality altogether.

BACK UP MMS.APK and MMS.ODEX before you do anything =D I can't test due to O2 uk being idiots

Might be a late reply, but did it work ? Trying to get an Mms.apk for Galaxy S1, that doesn't turn the screen on.

[Q] Message Notification Icon Help

In the attached pictures you can see two icons in the top left of the notification bar. I want to get rid of or disable the one on the left. They both pop up for an sms for some reason, and I only use the stock messaging app.
The only way to get rid is to pull down the notification bar and press clear.
It serves no purpose to me. I've frozen whatever I could think that was doing it in titanium but I clearly haven't found it.
And either I'm crap at google or no one else has a problem with it, but I'd appreciate any help that can be offered.

When you click on the notification, what app does it open?
What other messaging applications do you have instead of the stock messaging client?
List your Market apps here and we may be able to help.
Seems to me that you have two SMS apps, so the problem will be solved if you disable notification on the other app or uninstall it if you use stock SMS app.
Thanks.
I don't believe I have any separate messaging apps (apart from the likes of Whats App).
I have always used the stock. I did get rid of it before but I can't for the life of me remember how, I recently wiped my phone and started again, restored titanium and it's popping back up. I assumed Titanium would've kept whatever it was frozen.
Easiest way to list my market apps? I have a lot.

Preferably not a 3rd party app as I have tried those in the past and they are flaky at best.

I confirm this works but then there are issues.
1. Have to unlock phone to see who is calling.
2. Cannot use camera buttons to wake phone. (this is the deal breaker for me)

Its all good. To each their own. Both of those fixed by using go locker, but then issue 3. Locker apps fix but drain more battery. So there it is weigh your options.

Phone freezing when making calls

My wife has an S2 with stock ROM. It's unlocked, on a T-Mobile UK SIM. The phone is about 6 months old. There is a problem with the phone screen going blank and not responding to any button or screen presses when dialling a call. After 10-20 secs, sometimes longer, the phone starts responding again.
The problem has been around for a few months, but has got alot more frequent in the last few weeks.
The phone is running XWKI4, Kernel 2.6.35.7.
Does anyone know what might be causing this, and whether there is a fix?
Save your data, do a full wipe, flash again using Odin.
You did UV?
This issue might be from how you UV. If you set the value to low, ur phone will not have enough power to run the tasks. So set value high on Set voltage tab might solve ur problem.
Just to confirm - this phone is completely out-of-the-box. It's not rooted, ROM'd, underclocked/overclocked or anything. I want it to stay that way as it's my wife's phone. I was just wondering if anyone else had these problems with a vanilla S2, and whether it may need to go back for a warranty repair?
Answer stays....
But you can try wiping using dial code first.
Save any pictures and videos on internal storage.
Re-flash what using ODIN? I didn't flash this phone in the first place. I don't want to put a custom ROM on this phone.
Who says custom ROM?
I try again, problem is you people ask but never do what told later...
Save you're picture/video
Using dialer dial *2767*3855#
It will wipe you're phone / factory reset.
If this don't help learn how to use Odin, get a stock ROM and flash using Odin.

Then which ROM should I flash? Also, if the ROM and kernel are the same as when it was purchased then why would re-flashing a ROM help?

So far you've suggested "flash again using Odin" and "try wiping using dial code first". It would really help if you could suggest something specific, and maybe leave out the cryptic comments?
How specific you want?
I even write the code which will do wiping for you.
And than I said if that fails learn how to use Odin to flash stock ROM.

Thanks for the suggestion. Sorry if I'm being dense, but I can't find and entry for the Phone apk in the app manager. There's "Phone Util" and "Dialer", but nothing else that looks like the phone app. Any ideas???
Are you using an alternative dialler? I had similar issues when I was using go dialler and go launcher. Uninstalled it and things were back to normal (for the most part). Check that first.
Step 2 easy way out is to reflash. You won't lose warranty etc if you do it right. Loads of tutorials available and check out samfirmware for the firmware you need to install.
Hope this helps. Good luck!
Edit-have you also tried alternative diallers? Does the problem come up using them too?

, atifsh meant that you do a soft restart for your phone: no need to flash anything: just simple soft restart.

She is using the stock dialer. She hasn't tried an alternative dialer, mainly because we couldn't work out a way to change the phone shortcut on the Touchwiz dock menu. This doesn't prevent us from installing an alternative dialer of course, but it the dock can't be reconfigured she will always be launching the stock dialer by mistake!
Can anyone explain how to change the default dialer, and recommend a good alternative for the S2?
We did also try rebooting the phone - several times - but the problem remains.

You can change out any of the shortcuts in the dock.
Open the app drawer, hit menu, edit, drag the icon you want to replace off the dock and into the app drawer, then drag the icon you want to be in the dock from the app drawer into the dock.

Try Touchpal contacts / dialler. I really liked that one over go dialler or dw contacts. And then, as indicated replace in the dock.
But first you need to determine if the issue presents itself in other diallers as well.
