I love having the option to reboot into download or recovery from the power menu, but one thing that trips me out is that when you're on your pin or pattern protected Lockscreen somebody could reboot into recovery and play around with some sensitive info. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be a good idea to make a mod that would make the recovery/download/fastboot options on the restart menu unavailable at the Lockscreen. If there's already a mod for that I would appreciate somebody's help or direction in finding it! Thanks in advance!
(If this is an exhausted topic I apologize, just couldn't find it. .)
Is there a better place for this question? Is there no workaround? Or is this just not a big deal to anybody else?... I might find another forum to ask this question in, not getting the traffic or response I was hoping for.
Many custom roms already have this option built in.

Hm. I've never noticed it. I'm not currently on cm/aosp/aokp. I'm running omega v7 (touchwiz) for galaxy s4 i9505. Hopefully it will be incorporated eventually.

Not likely in TW based roms. As it takes alot of framework changes in the source code. And has TW is closed sourced there is not much of a chance. I wish you luck though.

I'm sure that if it's out there it can be done in touchwiz. There are lots of mods for touchwiz roms.

Oh I know there is but the changes to make this happen need to be done deep in the source code and TW source is not open.

I just had a brand new GS3 and have been playing with it quite a lot these past days
I've done many things such as root it, download free paid apps with it, used different launchers with it, etc.
But the latest thing I did, to see what all the fuss was about was to upgrade my GS3 to Cyanogenmod 10.1 Nightly
I mean a lot of people are doing it so I thought it was all good, well at least at the beginning it seemed to be
I have to say at first glance it seemed like a great deal for me, having a spanking new lockscreen, notification bar, overall stock phone and messaging applications, and a sleek looking camera
Everything looked fine, until I tried out many of the new stuff out...
First of all the new camera was pretty ok but had one major drawback for me, the HDR mode
You see in the original GS3 ROM the cameras HDR mode was like lightning, you wouldn't notice that it takes separate photos to make the unified, balanced exposure photo
While in the new camera you can notice a time delay of something like .2-.5 seconds between each photograph that the camera takes in order to make you new HDR photo
The result? a badly stitched photo because of shaky hands. And even using "great" paid camera apps produced the same results
Next in the phone application itself, it looked nice and dandy until I noticed that the option for video calling totally disappeared...
And can I say video calling is by far one of my most used things in my GS3 if not the most after the texting and normal calls
I mean hey, I can make a video call anytime anywhere without internet isn't that awesome?!?
Well actually those two are my only real problems... the others could be the disappearance of my stock Samsung apps such as S Note or S Memo but those can be easily replaced with similar apps from the Play Store, and of course what other stock Samsung apps that dissapeared were the Samsung App store, S Voice, etc. which I liked to have been taken out
That said the Cyanogenmod ROM for me looked more like a launcher with added features but nothing else more, it did not have much of it's own "original" apps and that was kind of okay I guess
BUT MY CONCLUDING QUESTION IS
are all custom ROMs like this? will they all overwrite my beautiful video calling and camera capabilities or was it just the Cyanogenmod ROM?
I'm looking up into other ROMs like "Universe S4 ROM" or "Imperium ROM" for my GS3 and just wanted to know before I either invest a good amount of time or just waste it if those ROMs will or will not take out the bad and add mroe good to my GS3 especially the "Universe S4 ROM" since it said that it will add apps that are exclusive to the GS4 like the S Translate.
Thanks in advance for the replies!
CM and camera is a well posted problem .
You have to do some research first then decide if what the custom rom offers outweighs the bugs .
The S4 apps are a work in progress some work 100% some fail others have bugs that developers try and solve .
You would be better to stick with a stock rooted rom or even a bare bones stock custom Samsung rom .

You should try glamour s4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258723 by henry
It has nearly all the apps from the galaxy s4 you can get from the aroma launcher ( In recovery)
And my battery life is extended to nearly 3 hours more!

Thank you very much for this!
I'm still wondering if there are custom ROMs that still have the video call and camera the GS3 or are my only options really those bare bones stock custom Samsung ROMs? If so where can I look to have an easier time finding those types of ROMs I need?
And is an GS4 ROM one of those stock rooted ROM or bare bones stock custom Samsung ROMs that you're talking about or is it a totally different ROM already that doesn't have the video call and camera that I'm looking for?
Because I see all of these ROMs and their offers but I don't know where to look within the forums to know if they do or do not have the two simple aspects that I'm looking for.

Thanks too for this!
But as with the other reply I still have the same question.
Can I still make standard Samsung/Android video calls with this one and is the S4 camera that comes with this as good (or better) than the S3 camera?
I really do hope it does and I'll give it a shot!

By default, this ROM comes with S3 camera. You can find the S4 camera in Aroma. But the S4 camera is quite buggy, video recording some other functions are not wroking yet. Henry is trying his best to make it work. I would reccomend you to try Glamour S4 ROM. Brilliantly smooth and excellent.
In my opinion, cyanogenmod is the most overrated rom in the android. Just a little speed improvement and lots of missing features and problems.
You should try roms based on samsung roms.

Are there indicators?

If you want(not wants) that notification bar,the best solution is to buy a Touchwiz UX 2 enabled Samsung device(as the S4).
I saw a similar mod for Galaxy S with Cyanogenmod 10.1.If you are using this Custom ROM,it may work, but not sure.

Don't be so harsh!I said that it's the best solution. No that it is the only solution.I saw it on Galaxy S with CM 10.1 if you read my post.If you are so defensive,do you know how to make it on stock JB?
I was nice enough in my post.If you don't admit that the best solution is to buy a device with that feature, then it's your fault.

I'm not being "harsh", I'm being realistic. People buy phones they want and phones they CAN afford. They didn't settle for less because they were forced to. I appreciate the gesture of replying but if you really are a serious enthusiast about android then you wouldn't say that. Although I can't agree that the best solution is to buy a newer-gen device just for a feature that can easily be replicated. I can do the same on PAC-ROM with NO code changes and just a few PNGs to make the "look" as for making it work for STOCK 4.1.2, Here's what I got: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2315342
You're Welcome. The title says it's for GB but someone made it work for ICS(4.0+) which has a similar code base to JB(4.1) I'm not sure but that's what the OP has posted. The OP also said that he may be supporting JB 4.1 "soon" I can only speculate because I haven't tried it firsthand because I have no free time.

You are right,I'm not an Android enthusiast, that's why I'm the one who's realistic.Even with those code and .png changes, these don't look like on a device that supports natively that feature(not so polished). That's why,by comparaison, the best solution is to get a device that supports natively that feature(only if you have money). And he made that guide for JB 4.1.2 too.
I wasn't replying like an iPhone owner, but to get a feature to look perfectly like S4's,for example,is hard, because that feture is originaly made by a team of developers that are paid to make it work and look very good.
I will try when i'm back from vacation

Not sure if you aware of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2335530
a lot ported Touchwiz launchers that I am aware of are based on old S3, but skined to look like S4, Note3, or even S5. There's no real port that I am aware of, that's because it soo embeded into system frameworks, libs,..etc, probably many developers having hard time to port it.
but couple of developers got together and able to port HTC Sense 6 Apps, Blinkfeed, launcher, all good stuff (see link below)..I was monitoring this thread when they start work on it, so if couple of developers come together, everything possible as it seems. it seems it is just not many developers intersted on Touchwiz launcher. I know prvious Touchwiz launcher was really bad, but I believe Samsung come along good and made a lot of improvement on newest Touchwiz launcher that's on new devices.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2696399
First and foremost, I absolutely don't want anyone to think I'm complaining about developers or anything like that. I certainly appreciate everyone's hard work when they are putting together roms for any phone.
That being said, I am just curious why there are so few roms for the T-mobile Galaxy S5. I had the S1-S4 for Sprint and all of them had tons and tons of roms. All those roms had lots of theme work and unique items. I am not seeing any of that on the T-mobile side. Is this variant preventing that or is there just not enough love for it?
Just as an example.. check out these rom for the sprint S5....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s5/development/rom-team-nocturnalunofficalcm-11-0-t2883072
There is not too much of a difference between two touchwiz Roms. Its pointless to have same thing packadged with different names. I love the couple of options that are available in T-Mobile.
Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk
In order for the rom to work with wifi calling it has to retain the touchwiz base, and like ceo.mtcl said theres only so much you can change. There is a CM rom available for the device, i gave it a test run on my G900T. It ran great but without wifi calling its almost useless to me
ok so am i missing something in these roms? none of them look any different than a stock rom. All of the icons are the same, the fonts are the same the notification panel is the same, there isn't any theming (sp? lol). Everyone defaults to use some wanam (which didnt work at all for me), but that's pretty limited. I'm sad in my pants right now lol....

Have you checked the Unified Development section? And yes, since the arrival of Xposed, members can now do a lot to their phones rather than the developer spend 100's of hours themeing all the elements of a ROM and have a post every other day saying "it is too blue". It is comments like that that have pushed developers into saying "why bother". You cannot make everyone happy with how you theme something and members forget that these ROMs are made for the developers, and they decided to share...it is not their jobs and they are not getting paid for those ROMs. But NOW the power is in your hands thanks to Wanam and everyone working on toolboxes to allow you to do more. Not enough? There a several icon changing apps on Play. There is also Themer. Add that to all the awesome flagship phones released almost every 9 months by many manufacturers. A lot of developers have wanted a challenge so tried something new and changed manufacturers. So yeah...you won't see 30 TW ROMs anymore.
Also add Verizon and AT&T with locked bootloaders discouraging developers.

While I agree with Kenny on his viewpoint, I see go blues point as well. I, personally, prefer a more pure aosp rom myself. There is a lack of aosp development/releases for our device. I'm still running srock/unrooted, until a solid aosp rom drops, which I believe hasn't happened yet due to kernel development? Icons are themed and running ADW launcher to change icons and themes to keep things clean, but themes are still limited. Don't get me wrong, love the s5, mad respect and thanks to all the devs doing their work, but I see his point. Cheers!

Looks like a lot of the "flavors" of AOSP are covered: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-development
My guess is there would be a lot more if the bigger 2 carriers AT&T and Verizon hadn't made AOSP impossible with their locked bootloaders. That would seem to be the main reason for lower development after the S3s.
Reason also is the S5 is not as popular as thought, many were sold, but to users that could care less about doing custom roms, and the age group is probably the younger crowd. The OS is simply awful.
Correct me if I'm wrong, we can probably flash the ones from unified development no?

yes you can as long as you dont care about tripping knox.
But be warned, Make sure you only flash something that is designed for the s5 and something that has been tested and works on the s5.. You can still brick the phone if you make some stupid mistakes or decisions.
Remember that Flashing the phone is your responsibilty. So if you screw up and brick, dont blame anyone for your mistakes. Reading and searching is your best friend, before you flash anything to your phone.
Yeah to flash anything from there you would have needed a custom recovery this tripping the Knox counter.
Even if there were aosp roms for our specific device, I doubt that would be different. Since aosp roms all have custom kernels that would trip Knox anyway

Look 2 posts above yours. I already linked to that section...the answer is yes.
I live in a area where I need wifi calling, so.. I've never had the option to be free with ROMs, really sucks .. what I want, is a Nexus... or a One Plus phone, but I'm stuck.. what can ya do lol
I know how OP feels, i personally will be getting the Nexus 6 when it releases or the Z3 and retiring the galaxy s5
I appreciate the hard work the few devs we have working on our phone have been doing but this is like the galaxy note 2 community imho, i got the phone with the hopes that the community will be like the galaxy s4
in addition to the unified ROM's i have been able to get a ton of these TW roms to work on my tmobile s5 simply by flashing a t mobile kernal right after the rom
